On March 12, 1941 he married Arnell Elizabeth Holmes. He worked for the U.S. Postal Service until he joined the Navy in 1942. He was in the 24th Navy Construction Battalion and then served in the South Pacific in the "Seabees," including at the headquarters for Admiral "Bull" Halsey, Commander of the Pacific Fleet. Jim’s hobbies included fishing, bowling, and stained glass art. He could tell colorful fish stories, won the state doubles championship in bowling, and many of his glass creations are proudly displayed. One, inspired by 9/11/01, has become a traveling exhibit. He was ordained a deacon in the Lindale Baptist Church in Corpus Christi in 1954 and his life verse was "As for me and my house, we will serve the Lord." Joshua 24:15. Jim used his gift of singing to minister in many capacities. In his memoirs Jim wrote, "Some of the most important lessons I learned from my father and mother were the importance of honesty, integrity and hard work; if a job is worth doing, do it right to the best of your ability; and love and be loved."
Jim went to see the Lord on April 14, 2003, preceded in death by his first wife, Arnell, on June 21, 1995, his mother, father, and siblings.
