James P. Carr
Memorial services for James P. Carr, 89, of Athens, formerly of Cedar Creek Lake, were held April 8 at First Presbyterian Church in Athens with Rev. Joe Warren and Dr. C. William McNatt officiating. Arrangements were with Carroll-Lehr Funeral Home.
Mr. Carr died April 4, 2006 in Athens.
He was born March 1, 1917 in Kemp to the late James Elmo and Mary Elizabeth Porter Carr. After residing at Cedar Creek Lake 20 years, Mr. Carr moved to Athens one year ago. James owned and operated Carr Monument Works in Dallas and McKinney until his retirement.
During World War II, he served in the 864th Aviator Engineers Division of the United States Army, stationed in the Philippines. He valued those friendships and looked foward to their annual reunions.
James was a gifted musician with the ability to play almost every stringed instrument and the organ and was a long time member of the Cedar Creek Organ Club.
A brother, Buck Parrish and sisters, Leta Whitaker and Edwina Dalton, preceded him in death.
Survivors include his wife, Virginia Carr of Athens; son and daughter-in-law, Jimmy and Sherry Carr of Forney; step-children, Judy Cassity and husband Gary of Willett, Calif., Jim Barnette and wife Beverly of Corsicana and John Barnette and wife Gay of Burton; sisters, Eula Mae Huffman of Bryan and Mary Alice Miller of Mabank; 10 grandchildren and 15 great-grandchildren.
Inabeth Arnold
Arnold
Inabeth Murchison Arnold of Payne Springs passed away April 14, 2006 at her home. She was preceded in death by her infant son, Joseph Arnold and husband of 42 years, William (Bill) Jopling Arnold.
She is survived by her children, Sherrie Ann Arnold of Payne Springs, Gaines (Hap) Arnold and wife Terri of Plano, Teresa Gail Beasley and husband James of Colorado Springs, Colo., Jay Arnold and wife Stephanie of Gun Barrel City and James Ray Arnold and wife Debbie of Burleson; sister, Bunnie Ketha of Bastrop; 11 grandchildren, 12 great-grandchildren and a host of nieces, nephews and other relatives.
Inabeth cherished being surrounded by her family. She was an artist and loved painting, crafts, Canton’s First Monday Trades Days and antiques.
To honor her request, there will not be a formal memorial service. On April 15 immediate family members gathered at the home of Sherrie Arnold to celebrate her life.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Mabank Special Olympics, P.O. Box 122, Mabank, TX 75147.
Bill Arnold
Services for Bill Arnold, 82, of Tool, were held at the Cedar Creek Lake United Methodist Church on Wednesday, April 19 with the Rev. Chuck Weber and Rev. Irvan Anthony officiating. Interment followed in the Tool Cemetery under the direction of Eubank Cedar Creek Funeral Home.
Pallbearers were Charles Gunderson, Rodney Hamilton, Tyler Hamilton and Brent Nickelson.
Mr. Arnold was born March 8, 1924 in Tool and passed away April 17, 2006 in Mabank. He was self-employed.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Dortha Arnold, in 2006.
He is survived by his daughter, Dell Hamilton and husband Rodney of Arnold Hills; daughter, Debra Gunderson and husband Charles of Arnold Hills; grandchildren Ashley Hamilton, Tyler Hamilton, Lynsey Nickelson, Brent Nickelson, Brandy Kirkland and great-grandchild Saylor Grace Nickelson.
J. A. Davis
Services for J.A. Davis Sr., 80, of Payne Springs, were held April 17 at Harbor Baptist Church with Rev. George Yarger officiating. Interment followed in the Payne Springs Cemetery under the direction of Eubank Cedar Creek Funeral Home.
Pallbearers were Ray Martin, Richard Butler, Jason Fry, Roger Foster, Mike Wertz and Adrian Morman. Honorary pallbearers were Thomas Ramsey and Bennie Thomas.
Mr. Davis was born Sept. 21, 1925 in Paris and passed away April 14, 2006 in Payne Springs. A U.S. Army veteran of World War II, he was a member of American Legion Post 310 in Gun Barrel City and VFW Post 4376 in Seven Points. Previously of Hurst, Mr. Davis had lived in Payne Springs since 1983. He was a member of Harbor Baptist Church. He retired from Continental Trailways after 30 years, drove a bus for Mabank ISD for 10 years and owned and operated J.A. Davis Trucking Company.
He is survived by four sons, Billy Davis of Fort Worth, Robert Manasco and wife Betty of Arlington, James A. Davis Jr. of Payne Springs and Fred Davis and wife Michelle of Payne Springs; a daughter, Joan Cox of Payne Springs; two grandchildren, Sherry Fry and husband Jason of Mabank and Breanna Davis of Payne Springs; two great-grandchildren, Trenton Fry and J.J. Fry, both of Mabank; two brothers, Bobby Davis of Chandler and Jerry Davis of Atlanta, Ga., and a sister, Mary Moran of Lubbock.
J. P. Henderson
Services for J.P. Henderson Jr., 79, of Kemp, were held April 14 in the Anderson Clayton Bros. Chapel in Kemp with Rev. Tracy Henderson officiating. Interment followed in the King Cemetery under the direction of Anderson Clayton Bros.
Pallbearers were Chris Bruner, Joey Galvez, Andrew Wilson, Tory Baker, Tony Smith and Charlie Henderson. Honorary pallbearers were Danny Pruitt, John Linol Grinsted and Gary Grinsted.
Mr. Henderson was born April 14, 1926 in Mabank to the late Jasper Nicholson and Gracie Bell (Robertson) Henderson and passed away April 12, 2006 in Athens. He was Baptist by faith and served in the U.S. Army in World War II. He was married to the former Dorothy Faye Grinsted on Oct. 26, 1946. His daughter, Shirley Pruitt Slack; grandson, Justin Galvez; great-granddaughter, Constance Pruitt; sister, Juanita Irby and seven brothers, Virgil, Bob, Benny, Elsie, Bert, Ervy and Roy Henderson, preceded him in death.
Survivors include his wife of 59 years, Dorothy Henderson; children, Linda Bruner of Kemp, Allen Henderson Sr. and his wife Helen and Ronnie Dean and his wife Deniese, all of Aley Community and Rita Kay Galvez and husband Joe of Mabank; grandchildren, Candi Binger, Chris Bruner, Chrystal Bruner, Chad Bruner, Danny Pruitt, Angie Potter, Cherry Ragel, Jessica Wilson, Tina Hunter, Dorothy Baker, Joey Galvez, Rose Garland, Allen Henderson Jr., Rachel Goble, Barbara Smith, Brandi Henderson and Rodney Henderson; 32 great-grandchildren; brother, Aubrey Henderson of Tool; sister, Dovie Wilson of Oregon; step-brother, Raymond Hammonds of Dallas; numerous nieces, nephews and other relatives and friends.
Ronald DeWayne "Ronnie" Duggins
Graveside services for former Frederick, Okla. resident Ronald DeWayne “Ronnie” Duggins, 59, of Kemp, were held April 11 at the Tipton Cemetery with Rev. Charles Wyatt officiating. Burial followed under the direction of Jackson Funeral Home of Frederick. Mr. Duggins passed away Sunday, April 9, 2006 at East Texas Medical Center in Tyler.
He was born July 8, 1946 in Frederick, Okla. to Carl Jr. and Edna Pauline Seta Duggins. He attended school in Frederick public schools where he gradeuated with the Class of 1964. He served in the National Guard. He was employed as a truck driver with Bow Trucking.
He is survived by two sons: Ron Duggins and his wife Jane of Stillwater and Paul Duggins and his wife Kimberly of Frederick; one daughter: Amy Wilcox of Mulhall, Okla; his mother, Edna Duggins of Tipton; two brothers: Terry Duggins of Frederick and Danny Lloyd Duggins of Houston; one sister: Deborah Duggins of Altus and six granddaughters: Amber, Shelby, Allie and Lilian Duggins, and Abby and Mattie Wilcox.
He was preceded in death by his father, Carl Duggins and one brother, Carl Gene Duggins.

Rebecca Faye Newman
Services for REBECCA FAYE NEWMAN, 19, of Gun Barrel City, were held Tuesday at Christian Life Center Church under the direction of Eubank Cedar Creek Funeral Home. Rev. Barry Boatright officiated.
Rebecca passed away April 22, 2006 in an automobile accident in Kaufman. She was born Oct. 28, 1986 in Irving, the daughter of Dr. Wallace G. and Dr. Norma F. Newman. She was a veteran of the U.S. Navy. She graduated from Mabank High School in three years, with honors, and was a member of Phi Beta Kappa at Trinity Valley Community College.
She is survived by her parents, of Gun Barrel City; a brother, MM2 Wallace G. Newman II of Virginia Beach, Va., grandmothers, Iris Williams of Trinidad and Pat Newman of Ingleside; grandparents, Mr. and Mrs. Oliver Smith of Spring City, Tenn.; aunts, uncles, cousins and many friends.
Justine Marie Svoboda Pokladnik
JUSTINE MARIE SVOBODA POKLADNIK, of Dallas, was born Dec. 8, 1913 in Floresville to Marie (Makovy) and Joseph Svoboda, now deceased.
She left this earth April 21, 2006 to be with the Lord she loved and worshiped and to rejoin her husband of 65 years, Cyrill "Sid" Pokladnik, and son John. She was also preceded in death by her brothers Henry and Adolph; sister Pauline; foster sister Lillian Vrana Hamusek; and foster parents Norbert and Barbara Kalich, who finished raising her after being orphaned at age 7.
Justine was the past president of the Shore Acres Garden Club; a 50 year member of the Catholic Daughters of America; SPJST (Slovanik Benevolent Order of the State of Texas); KJZT, Circle of Czech Women; Sons of Herman; Germainia Lodge and with her husband charitably contributed to Czech Chairs at UT Austin and UNT.
Justine and Sid owned and operated Rudolph's Meat Market & Sausage Factory for 55 of the 111 years it's been on Elm Street. The family still owns and operates the market. She lived in Mantle Manors tending her garden when not in Dallas.
Justine is survived by a daughter, Justine Marie Yeager and husband Doug; grandsons Richard Andreason and wife Jennifer and their children Ashley, Alexandria, Emily and Will; Brandon Andreason; Neal Andreason and wife Chele; granddaughters Tara Andreason Cloutman and children Cayla, Lauren and Brady, Keri Andreason Jones and husband Scott; great-grandchildren and many nieces and nephews.
Rosary was held Tuesday at Sparkman/Crane Funeral Home Chapel. Funeral Mass was celebrated Wednesday at St. Pius X Catholic Church with Rev. Msgr. Thomas W. Weinzapfel, Celebrant. Interment was at Hillcrest Memorial Park.

Nancy Pauline Staggs
NANCY PAULINE STAGGS passed away in Kemp on April 30, 2006.
Nancy was born in the Mabank area on Jan. 19, 1925 to George and Lou Hampton White. She was raised in Mabank and later moved to Kemp where she lived the rest of her life.
She was a member of the Assembly of God Church. On Sept. 30, 1939 Nancy married Joe Thomas Staggs in Kemp, who preceded her in death on June 21, 1983.
Nancy is survived by her sons, Ed Staggs of Balch Springs, Tom Staggs of Leesburg, Ala., David Staggs of Glennville, and Joe Staggs and his wife Georgia of Dallas; daughters, Ruby Rozell and Christine Collins, both of Locust Grove, Okla.; brother, Lonnie Dee White of Dallas; sisters, Georgia Mahan of Seven Points and Myrtle Lee Dickerson of Dallas; 29 grandchildren, 25 great-grandchildren and two great-great-grandchildren and many other relatives and friends.
Graveside services will be held Thursday, May 4 at 2 p.m. at Elm Grove Cemetery in Van Zandt County with Rev. Henry Lee Lusk officiating.

Maria "Tina" Cervantes
Marie “Tina” Cervantes, 82, of Gun Barrel City and formerly of Dallas, completed her work on Earth and has taken her leave to be in heaven with our heavenly Father.
Rosary was said May 22 at Eubank Memorial Chapel in Mabank. Mass of Christian Burial was held May 23 at St. Jude Catholic Church in Gun Barrel City with Msgr. John Brennan officiating. Interment followed in Oaklawn Cemetery in Mabank under the direction of Eubank Funeral Home of Mabank.
Mrs. Cervantes was born Dec. 2, 1923 to Pietro L. and Filomena (Marcis) Desogus in the Province of Villasor, Sardinia, Italy and peacefully passed away May 18, 2006 at her home. Lovingly known by all as “Mangum,” she was so very proud of her family and her Italian heritage.
She was preceded in death by her beloved “Bello,” husband of 52 years, Romulo “Ray” Cervantes. Survivors include her sons, Peter L. Cervantes of Carrollton, Romulo I. Cervantes and his wife Ellen of Loveland, Colo., Jesse G. Cervantes and Rick Burton, both of Charleston, S.C. and John J. Cervantes and his wife Barbara of Flower Mound; daughter, Chris Starrett and her husband Don of Gun Barrel City; grandchildren, Howard, Kevin and Gregg Starrett, Tammy, Colleen, Lee and Theresa Cervantes, Rob Sloan, and Danielle and Christy Cervantes; great-grandchildren, Elizabeth, Timothy and Anthony Cervantes, Aaron Alford and Cameron Starrett; numerous cousins and a host of friends in the U.S. and Italy.
Pallbearers were Greg Starrett, Lee Cervantes, Kevin Starrett, Howard Starrett, Rick Burton and Mike Cervantes.
“God looked around His garden and found an empty space. He then looked down upon this earth and saw your sweet tired face. He put His arms around you and lifted you to rest. God’s garden must be beautiful; He always takes the best. He knew you would never get well on this earth again. He saw the roads getting rough and the hills were hard to climb, so He closed your weary eyelids and whispered in your ear, ‘Peace be thine.’” It broke our hearts to lose you; but you did not go alone. For part of us went with you the day God called you home.”

Orville DeMarcus "O.D." Greenwood Jr.
Graveside services for ORVILLE DEMARCUS “O.D.” GREENWOOD JR. were held May 6 at Prairie Point Cemetery in Kerens under the direction of Hilliard Funeral Home of Van.
Mr. Greenwood passed away at the age of 82 on May 3, 2006 in Malakoff. He was born Jan. 2, 1924 in Prior, Okla. to the late Orville D. and Marilda Rachel (Puckett) Greenwood.
He had been a resident of Van for 19 years. He retired from Nocona Boot Company and served in the U.S. Army in 1943. Mr. Greenwood was formerly of Mineola and Nocona.
Mr. Greenwood was preceded in death by his wife Ruby Lou; granddaughter Ruth Ann King, one brother and three sisters.
He is survived by his sons, Gary Greenwood of Missouri, Orval Greenwood, Tony Greenwood and Leslie Greenwood, all of Payne Springs, Curtis Greenwood of Van and Joe Greenwood of Okla.; daughters, Barbara Greenwood of Okla., Carolynn Arnold of Canyon and Judy Pruitt of Van; one sister, Babe Woodburn of Calif.; 30 grandchildren and 35 great-grandchildren.
Connie Lee Matthews
Connie Lee Matthews, 56, of Mabank, passed away May 11 in Hico and cremation was held at DFW National Cemetery.
Mrs. Matthews was born Jan. 7, 1950 in Roswell, New Mexico, the daughter of Thomas Jefferson Kee and Arline (Taylor) Kee. She was a retired Wal-Mart cashier.
She was married to Billie David Matthews and is survived by sons and daughters-in-law, Billie Lee and Kathy Matthews of Mabank, Larry and Kandi Matthews of Palestine and Gary and Heather Matthews of Gun Barrel City; daughter and son-in-law, Melaine and James Fisher; mother, Arline Taylor Brown of Hico; brothers and sisters-in-law, Brig. Gen. Dimpsy and Mary Kee of Washington, D.C., Johnny and Marla Carr of Yuma, Ariz. and Tommie and Michelle Kee of Lamesa; nine grandchildren.
Chance Lee Trebing
CHANCE LEE TREBING of Mabank was born Aug. 14, 1997 in Dallas and passed away May 21, 2006.
Chance was preceded in death by his great-grandfather, James Boyd. He is survived by his mother, Kandice and husband Cole; father, Benjamin Lee Trebing; grandparents, Kim Miller, Louanne Trebing, Philip Crofton, John Trebing, Ronald and Vickie Boyd and Curtis Wilson; great-grandparents, Billie and Guy Couthran, Mary and Fred Trebing, LaVerne Boyd, Ernie and Ann Gonzales and Dean and Nancy Bartlett; uncles, Randy Crofton, Drew Trebing, J.T. Boyd, Clay (Margaret) McKinley and Clint McKinley; his best friend, Dodge; and numerous other family and friends.
Services will be held at 2 p.m. Thursday, May 25 at Laurel Oaks Funeral Home Chapel with interment following at Laurel Oaks Memorial Park in Mesquite.
Henry Kenneth Baker
Services for HENRY KENNETH BAKER, 75, of Seven Points, were held May 29 in the Anderson Clayton Bros. Chapel with Mr. Ken Bell officiating. Interment followed under the direction of Anderson Clayton Bros. of Kemp.
Mr. Baker was born June 10, 1930 in Milford to the late Henry and Fairy (Seabolt) Baker and passed away May 26, 2006 in Tyler.
Survivors include his wife, Dorothy Baker of Seven Points; son, Kenneth Dwayne Baker of Seven Points; daughters, Nancy Doreen Bonham and her husband Tony and Susan Piland and her husband Patrick, all of Mesquite; grandchildren, Valerie, Jack, and Kaitlyn; brothers, Don Baker of Kaufman and Larry Baker of Scurry; sister, Lila Tapp of Mabank; and numerous nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.
Avanal C. Barrow
Services for AVANAL C. BARROW, 71, of Fort Worth, were held May 30 at the First Assembly of God Church in Malakoff with Billy Paul Cain officiating.
Burial followed at the Payne Springs Cemetery under the direction of Tomlinson Funeral Home of Malakoff.
Mr. Barrow was born Dec. 23, 1934 in Payne Springs, the son of Avery and Bertha (Hunter) Cain. He passed away May 27, 2006 in Fort Worth.
He worked for the Grand Prairie ISD and was a member of the Eastern Star.
He is survived by his brother, Paul D. Cain of Malakoff; one sister, Dalphine Adams of Arlington; several nieces and nephews and also great nieces and nephews.
Pallbearers were Lester Burke, Randy Tower, Nathan Cain, Trevor Grover, Trey Porter and Kenneth Cain.
Kelly Don Cole
KELLY DON COLE of Dallas passed away May 19, 2006 at 41 years of age.
He is survived by his mother, Nancy Cole of Tool; father, Donnie Cole of Atoka, Okla.; his sister and brother-in-law, Jennifer and Alberto and his niece and nephews Lauren, Cole and Jake of Richardson. Kelly will also be greatly missed by his dog Makani and many other friends and family in Texas and Hawaii.
Kelly's ashes will be scattered on the beaches of Hawaii where he spent 13 years of his life before returning to Dallas to be with his family. His life was celebrated at his mother's residence with all his family and friends on May 28. "To live in the hearts of those he loved is not to die."
