Cody J. Orr, PFC, U.S. Army, age 21 of Kerrville, passed away Saturday, January 17, 2004 in Taji, Iraq. He was born May 16, 1982 in Tampa, FL to Robert and Debra (Miller) Orr. On February 10, 2003, he married Jacqueline "Jackie" Stanford in Killeen, TX.
Cody was in the 1-44 A.D.A. 4th Infantry Division in the U.S. Army. He was a brave and loyal soldier, and a loving and caring husband, son, and brother and will be greatly missed by his family and his fellow soldiers in his unit.
He is survived by his wife, Jackie Orr of Kerrville; parents, Bob and Debbie Orr of Ruskin, FL; sisters, Patty Askew of Brooksville, FL, Leoni Hinssen of TN, and Annette Gargtland of Boston; brothers, Bobbie Marsh of Ruskin, FL, Timmy Marsh of New York and Scott Orr of Kerrville. Cody was one of 34 grandchildren of Lois Miller of Ruskin, FL, who survives him. He is also survived by numerous aunt, uncles, nieces, nephews and cousins.
Services with full military honors will be held Wednesday, January 28, 2004, 10:00 a.m. at Grimes Funeral Chapels with graveside services following at Garden of Memories Cemetery.
Visitation will be Tuesday, January 27, 2004, 6-8 p.m. at Grimes Funeral Chapels.

Mrs. Shirley Paine, Age 59, of Center Point, Texas, died on Wednesday, August 4, 2004, at her residence. Mrs. Paine, a resident a Center Point for 40 years, was born on October 21, 1944, in Ballinger, Texas, to Aubrey Cox and Estelle Clara Williams Cox.
Shirley married Billy Paine, Sr. on May 29, 1970, in Center Point, Texas. She was a longtime employee of Kerrville Daily Times when it was owned by Bill Dozier. Shirley also worked at the Kerrville State Hospital as a secretary.
She married Billy Paine, Sr. On May 29, 1970 in Center Point, Texas. He survives along with her mother, Estelle "Ma" Cox of Barnhart, Texas; two sons, David & Lee Behrens, both of Kerrville; two sisters, Gail Cox of Barnhart and Toby Martin of Midland, Texas and four grandchildren, Cassie Behrens, Bradley Behrens, Tyler Shelby Behrens and Bennett Behrens.
Funeral services for Mrs. Paine will be held on Saturday, August 7, 2004 at 6:00 p.m. at Grimes Funeral Chapels with Pastor Mitch Butler officiating. Graveside services will be held on Sunday, August 8, 2004 at 10:00 a.m. at Barnhart Cemetery in Barnhart, Texas.
Mrs. Paine can be viewed after 3:00 p.m. Friday, August 6, 2004 at Grimes Funeral Chapels.

Mr. Edgar O. Pannell, Sr., age 80 of Gordonville, TX, passed away Thursday, April 10, 2003 at his residence. He was born April 9, 2003 in Vance, Texas to Edgar Dock Pannell and Minnie Greer Pannell. She married Jean Parks in Uvalde, Texas in 1944.
Mr. Pannell was a resident of Gordonville for twenty years. He was a construction supervisor in the heavy construction industry.
He is survived by his wife, Jean Pannell of Gordonville; daughter, Terri Greener of Gordonville; four sons, Eddie Pannell of Camp Wood, TX, Damon Pannell of Bailey, TX, Keith Pannell and Dale Pannell, both of Gordonville; twelve grandchildren and eight great grandchildren.
Graveside services will be held Wednesday, April 16, 2003, 11:00 a.m. at Vance Cemetery in Vance, Texas with Rev. Pete Steigerwald officiating.

Mrs. Genevieve "Tommie" Pendleton, age 80 of Kerrville, passed away Friday, May 16, 2003 at her residence. She was born August 27, 1922 in St. Louis, Missouri to William F. Boyce and Clara S. Gross Boyce.
Mrs. Pendleton was legal secretary and a nationally accredited flower show judge.
She is survived by two sons, Edward Harold Pendleton and wife, Cheryl of Livingston, Texas and James "Dusty" Pendleton & wife, Martha of Bandera; one sister, Cora Allen of Houston; two grandchildren, Virginia Anne Siminski and Mark Pendleton; and two great grandchildren, Sarah Anne Siminski and Rachel Marie Siminski. She was preceded in death by her first husband, Edward Harold Harke, II who was killed in World War II, and her second husband, James Leon Pendleton in 1972.
No services will be held.

Mr. Roberto Santos Perez, Age 70, of Kerrville, Texas, passed away Sunday, July 20, 2003, at his residence. Mr. Perez, a longtime resident of Kerrville, was born on February 3, 1933, in Progreso Coahuila Mexico to Sabino Perez and Virginia Santos Perez.
He married Rosa Elva Zambrano on March 19, 1955, in Monclova Coahuila. He was a rancher and was of the Catholic faith.
Survivors, Wife, Mrs. Rosa Perez of Kerrville; Daughters, Alma Sheppard of Pipe Creek, Angelica Fultz of Arlington and Jamie Roman of Ingram; Sons, Louis R. Perez of Medina, Tito Perez and Joel Perez, both of Kerrville; Numerous Brothers and Sisters; 17 Grandchildren and 11 Great Grandchildren.
Viewing will be held at the funeral home all day Monday with funeral services at 7:00 P. M., Monday, July 21, 2003, Grimes Funeral Chapels, Kerrville, Texas. Burial will follow in Mexico.

Mrs. Edna Marguerite Perry, Age 92, of Kerrville, Texas, died on Wednesday, August 4, 2004, in a Kerrville nursing center. Mrs. Perry, a resident of Kerrville for four years and a prior resident of Atlanta, Georgia, was born on October 3, 1911, in Talbot County, Georgia, to Wilson A. Beverly and Evie Lena Brown Beverly.
She was married to Edwin Kelly Perry who preceded her in death. Mrs. Perry was a homemaker and a member of the Baptist Faith.
Survivors, Daughter, Beverly Harris of Hunt; Three grandchildren, Bonnie Payne, Linda Smith, and David Harris; Five great grandchildren, Joanna Smith, Jennifer Smith, Jeremiah Smith, Elizabeth Payne and Justin Harris.

Reverend Dr. John Wesley Platt of Kerrville, Texas passed away Monday, October 6, 2003 surrounded by his family and loved ones. Born September 26, 1924 in San Antonio, Rev. Platt is survived by his loving wife, Evelyn Florence Platt; children, John Everett Platt and wife, Sylvia, Jimmy David Platt and wife, Katy, Jeanne Marie Flores and husband, Oscar, and Daniel Lee Platt and wife, Shirley; brother, Harry A. Platt, Jr., and wife, Helen; grandchildren, Ronald D. Weaver, Jennifer Wallace, Melissa Platt, and Evan Platt; great grandchild, Ryan M. Wallace; nephew, David Hobbs; and nieces, Kay Lynn Cammack, Christin Cameron, Mary Jacqueline Platt.
After earning a B.A. at Southwestern University in Georgetown, and a B.D. at Southern Methodist University, Perkins School of Theology, he received Doctor of Divinity degree from the Harlandale Methodist Church in 1946. He joined the Southwest Texas Annual Conference in 1949, was ordained Deacon in 1951, and ordained Elder and received into Full Connection in 1952. He served faithfully at First Methodist Church, Granger, TX 1948-1949, the Methodist Church, Venus, TX 1949-1952, The Methodist Church, Yancey, TX 1952-1953, First Methodist Church, Bandera, TX 1953-1956, Grace Methodist Church, Corpus Christi, TX 1956-1962, Asbury Methodist Church, Austin, TX 1962-1965, First United Methodist Church, Brownsville, TX 1965-1969, First United Methodist Church, Del Rio, TX 1969-1974, Memorial United Methodist, Austin, TX 1974-1978, District Superintendent, McAllen District 1978-1985, St. Matthew’s United Methodist Church, San Antonio, TX 1985-1987, and First United Methodist Church, Kerrville, TX 1987-1994, from which he retired and was names "Pastor Emeritus." He was a member of the Alpha Chi Scholarship Society and the Pi Gamma Mu, Honor Society in the Social Sciences at Southwestern University, was Town and Country Pastor of the Year in 1956. May 26, 1994 was declared "John W. Platt Day" in Kerrville by the mayor of the city.
Funeral services will be held at First United Methodist Church, Kerrville, TX on Friday, October 10 at 10:00 a.m. with Masonic graveside services following at Garden of Memories.

Verna Humphreys Price Popken

Verna H. Price Popken died peacefully at a local hospital August 10, 2004, at the age of 89. She was born April 13, 1915 in Marfa, Texas, to a pioneer ranching family of Presidio County. Her parents were W. Bert and Rada Morton Humphreys. She was preceded in death by three brothers, Joe, Sam and Mack Humphreys.
After graduating from the University of Texas, Verna taught for many years including some time in an historic one-room schoolhouse in the Big Bend.
She married Jess Price, a petroleum engineer. During their 32 year marriage, his career in the oil business took them to live in South America, the Netherlands and England. Following his death, Verna later married Fritz Popken, a research scientist, and they retired to Kerrville in 1983. Mr. Popken passed away in 1989.
Verna was an accomplished painter in the watercolor medium, as well as an avid bridge player and golfer throughout her life. She was a member of St. Peter’s Episcopal Church, the Kerrville Art Club, the Hill Country Arts Foundation, Friends of the Library, Riverhill Country Club, and the Museum of Western Art where she volunteered for many years.
She is survived by her son, William Bert Price and wife Leigh of Austin; her daughter, Laura Price Martens of Kerrville; three grandchildren, Scott and Julia Price and David Martens; sisters-in-law, Barbara Humphreys of Marfa and Manna Humphreys of Pensacola, Florida; and numerous nephews, nieces and cousins.
The family is grateful for the kindness and care extended to Verna by the doctors, nurses, the ICU and hospital staff during her illness.
A memorial service will be held at St. Peter’s Episcopal Church on Friday, August 13, 2004, at 1:00 P. M.
Memorials may be sent to the Museum of Western Art, the Butt-Holdworth Memorial Library, Marfa Historical Society or a charity of choice.

Mrs. Lois Jean Porter, Age 53, of Bandera, Texas, died on Saturday, August 14, 2004, in a San Antonio hospital. Mrs. Porter, a resident of Bandera for 8 years and a prior resident of Baytown, was born on May 20, 1951, in Baytown, Texas, to Milton Arvis Jackson and Lucille Irene Franta Jackson.
She married Danny Lee Porter in Baytown, Texas, in 1971. Lois was a housekeeper at the Bandera Lodge.
