Don LaRue Burcalow
Don LaRue Burcalow passed away Saturday, May 20, 2006 at his home in Temple, Texas at the age of 70.
He left a special lady in his life, Clara Bell Benner of Temple, TX; a brother, Gayland Burcalow of Longview, TX; a sister, Yvette Amos of Denver, CO; and two children he often talked about, Kelly of Edna, TX and James Keith of Lafayette, TX.
Don Burcalow attended school in Gatesville, TX, and Baylor University, where he majored in music. He played a clarinet in the Navy Dixie Band and served as a sonar man on the U.S.S. De Haven Destroyer. He was a Mason, lifetime member of VFW Post 1820 of Temple, TX, member of DAV Post 111 of Temple, TX, and member of American Legion Post 133 of Temple, TX. He was a television serviceman in civilian life.

Cecelia Wilson Bellett
Cecelia Wilson Bellett, of Gatesville, died Thursday, June 1, 2006 at her residence. She was 59.
No services are scheduled.
Surivors include her husband, Ronald Duggan, of Gatesville; son, John Bellett, of San Antonio; daughter, Angela Spoor, of San Antonio; sister, Louise Weiser Duvall, of Shreveport, LA; and brother, Buddy Wilson, of Vivian, LA.
David G. Kyle Jr.
David G. Kyle Jr., of Shreveport, LA, died June 12, 2006 as the result of an auto-pedestrian accident. He was 44.
A graveside memorial service was held Saturday, June 17, at Providence Cemetery at Springridge, LA.
Mr. Kyle was born July 30, 1961, in Shreveport, LA. He was preceded in death by his twin daughters, Lisa and Leslie Kyle.
Survivors include his wife, Debra Geedy of Shreveport; mother, Ernestine (Cissy) Folks of Shreveport; father, David G. Kyle Sr. and wife, Barbara of Gatesville; daughter, Chassidy Kyle, of Shreveport; sisters, Robin Kyle Bahm and Cindy Kyle, both of Shreveport and Kristie Evans of Sterlington, LA; one brother, Daniel Kyle of Gatesville; and one grandson.
Sharon Marnell Owens Barnard Gee
Sharon Marnell Owens Barnard Gee died June 13, 2006, in a Merritt Island, FL, nursing home. She was 70.
Graveside services were held June 17 at the Paint Creek Cemetery near Robert Lee.
She was born July 19, 1935, in Coryell County to the late Hardy Owens and Willie May Swift Owens. She was a former resident of Gatesville.
Survivors include her son, David Barnard of Columbia, MO; and a daughter, Yevonne Creasey of Merritt Island, FL.
Keldredge Smith
Keldredge Smith, 74, of Gatesville, passed away on Friday, June 16, 2006, at a local hospital.
Graveside services were held at 10 a.m. Tuesday, June 20, 2006, at Bee House Cemetery.
Keldredge was born on March 19, 1932, in Lampasas County to Bennie and Buna Smith. He attended school in Evant and farmed in the Izoro and Purmela area and owned Smith Repair Shop, a small engine repair shop in Gatesville for several years. Keldredge served his country in the Army during the Korea War Era. He and his wife, Phyllis, have been members of the Purmela Baptist Church for over 45 years. Keldredge was a member of the VFW and loved to play dominoes. He is preceded in death by his parents; brother, Pennie Smith; and an infant daughter, Rebecca Smith.
He is survived by his wife of 50 years, Phyllis Smith; sons, Larry Smith and wife Kathy of Belton and Jerry Smith and wife Donna of Cleburne; daughters, Pam Bushnell and husband Curtis of Hewitt and Donna Aaron and husband Jack of China Spring; five grandchildren, Cameron and Kendall Smith, T.J. and Kari Smith and Petya Gerlach; brother, George M. Smith and wife Mae of Kaufman; sister-in-law, Sonia Smith of Cleburne; and other family and friends.

Gene Brown
Mr. Harold E. “Gene” Brown, age 77, of Gatesville died Thursday, June 15, 2006, at a Temple hospital.
Funeral services, with full military honors, were held at 10 a.m. Tuesday, June 20, 2006, at the Gatesville Funeral Home chapel with Dr. Willie Clarke officiating. Burial followed at Pidcoke Cemetery.
Gene was born on November 5, 1928, in Mount Sterling, KY, to the late Allie and Elizabeth Shepherd Brown. He attended school in Mount Sterling and obtained an associate’s degree in biology from CTC. After high school, he enlisted in the Army and served his country in Italy, Alaska, two tours in Germany and two tours in Korea, serving one tour in the Korean Conflict. He spent the remainder of his military career at Fort Hood, retiring after 23 years of service. He was the recipient of the Purple Heart and Combat Infantry Badge. In the 1950’s, he worked in the Nevada desert testing atomic weapons and was highly praised for his excellent work.
He was an avid outdoorsman. He loved hunting, fishing and spending time with people. He especially enjoyed the time he spent with his family and grandchildren, who he loved dearly. Gene was a soldier and a cowboy.
He is survived by his wife of 49 years, Janice W. Brown of Gatesville; sons, William E. Brown and wife Ann of Houston and Glenn T. Brown and wife Carol of League City, Texas; sisters, Maggie Kratzer of Mount Sterling, KY and Billie Jo Hoover and husband Tom of Nicholasville, KY; six grandchildren, Daniel Brown, Samuel Brown, Timothy Brown, Elias Brown, Craig Novak and Mary Celeste Novak; and four great-grandchildren, Michael Novak, Mignon Blake, Corey Dakin and Ashley Holliman.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the Pidcoke Cemetery Association.
Tommy Winters
Tommy Winters, age 77, of Gatesville, passed away Friday, June 9, 2006, at a local hospital.
Funeral services were held at 10 a.m. Monday, June 12, at the Gatesville Funeral Home Chapel. Burial was in the Live Oak Cemetery.
Tommy was born on July 14, 1928, in Hamilton County, TX. Tommy spent 20 plus years in the United States Air Force, with tours of Korea and stationed in Hawaii, Amarillo and San Antonio. He obtained the rank of master sergeant and was in the Air Police Squadron. He was also a marksman and received numerous citations for his marksman ability.
Upon retirement from the USAF, he held various positions in Amarillo, TX, in the insurance and automobile industry. He then accepted a position with the Texas Youth Council in Gatesville in 1972, which later became the Texas Department of Corrections Mountain View Unit from which he retired in 1991.
Tommy enjoyed dove hunting, fishing, riding motorcycles and his friends at Andy’s in his spare time. Tommy enjoyed the annual reunion of his squadron from the USAF, traveling across the United States meeting with other retirees. He was a friend to many and a dad to many who had lost theirs early in life.
Tommy married the love of his life, Helen Ray Cox, and she preceded him in death on January 4, 1985. He then married his best friend, Doris Winters, and she preceded him in death on October 6, 2004. Tommy was also preceded in death by his parents, Walter and Lela Winters; a brother, Len; and his sister, Ruth.
He is survived by his son, Thomas Winters and wife Janet of Missoula, MT; daughters, Patricia Aslin and husband Terry and Barbara Rhudy and husband David, all of Gatesville; six grandchildren, Jessica and Sierra of Missoula, MT, and Brian, Allison, Lauren and Chris, all of Gatesville.

Billy Bruce Turner
Billy Bruce Turner, 79, passed away on Monday, June 12, 2006, at his home in Killeen.
Funeral services were held at 10 a.m. Friday, June 16, 2006, at Scott’s Funeral Home Chapel with burial at Turnersville Cemetery.
Billy was born on August 21, 1926, to Willie Linvill and Mae Kathleen Cathy Turner in Turnersville. He married Alice Merle Thomson on March 16, 1945, in Turnersville. Billy served our country for 26 years in the Army, earning a Bronze Star, Good Conduct Medal Clasp, 2 Bronze Service Stars to Vietnam and the Purple Heart before retiring in 1971. He is preceded in death by his parents, his wife and his brothers, Deward Turner, H.C. Turner and Joe Turner.
Billy is survived by his children, Barbara Jewell Woods of Gatesville, Billy Paul Turner and wife Debbie of Cedar Park, Brett Alan Turner and wife Rosie of Taylor and Brenda Turner Gablein and husband Robert of Killeen; nine grandchildren; 16 great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.

Dr. James Edwin Pfeffer
Dr. James Edwin Pfeffer, age 82, of Gatesville, died Sunday, June 11, 2006, at a Gatesville hospital after a brave fight with lung cancer.
Memorial services will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday, June 17 at the First Presbyterian Church in Gatesville with the Rev. Dr. Jonathan Swanson officiating.
Edwin was born on July 9, 1923, in San Angelo to the late Albert and Tytus Simpson Pfeffer. At age 16, he enlisted in the U.S. Army, at one time being the youngest tech sergeant in the Army, in which he served for 6 ½ years. During World War II, he fought in the European Theater as part of the D-Day invasion. He was commissioned as a first lieutenant.
In 1945, he returned to San Angelo where he met and married Florence Sandquist on May 1, 1946; they recently celebrated 60 years of marriage with a family reunion.
He attended San Angelo Jr. College and Illinois College of Optometry in Chicago. Upon graduation in 1949, the couple and family returned to Texas and moved to Gatesville where Dr. Pfeffer practiced optometry for 47 years. He took great satisfaction in serving his patients in the Gatesville area. He was a member of First Presbyterian Church for over 50 years.
Edwin (Doc) loved to fish, hunt, and tend the yard with his wife. He also enjoyed reading and playing bridge. He took great pride in his children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren. His family was the most important thing in his life.
He was preceded in death by his parents; brothers, Bernard and Marvin; and his sister, Marie.
Those he leaves to celebrate his life include his wife, Florence; his four children, James Edwin Pfeffer Jr. and wife Joyce of Smyrna, TN, Jeanne Jensen and husband Leon of Fergus Falls, MN, Dennis Pfeffer and wife Mary of Austin, TX and Carla Castle and husband Jim of Richmond, TX. He also leaves nine grandchildren, Stephanie and Dustin Pfeffer, Eric Jensen and fiancee Teresa Scharber, Brady Jensen and wife Alicia, Ryan Jensen and wife Jill, Derik Pfeffer and wife Jenny, Tara Paul and husband Aaron, Jaime Dadd and husband Steven and Ashley Carpenter and husband Brit. His two great-grandchildren are Daniel Pfeffer and Linnea Jensen.
The family wishes to acknowledge the excellent care Edwin received from the physicians and nursing staff at Coryell Memorial Hospital. He also appreciated the care he received from Dr. Lawrence Canning, his oncologist since 1969 through four episodes of cancer treatments.

Mrs. LaVerne McDonald Manning
Mrs. LaVerne McDonald Manning, age 88, of Gatesville, passed away on Wednesday, June 14, 2006, at a local nursing home.
Funeral services will be at 9 a.m. Saturday, June 17, at Gatesville Funeral Home Chapel with the Rev. Derald Dugger officiating. Burial will follow at Chapel Hill Cemetery in Waco.
Pallbearers will be her grandsons, Jim McDonald Jr., Brad McDonald, Jason McDonald, John McDonald and Mike Blanchard and Jack Maxwell.
Mrs. Manning was born on October 15, 1917, to the late Charles Willard and Cora Mae Clemons Barber near Whitney. She graduated from West High School in 1936. After moving to Waco, LaVerne attended Waco Beauty School and became a licensed beautician. She was a beautician in Waco for over 40 years and owned her own shop, LaVerne’s Beauty Shop, at her home on Herring Avenue. She married Alex McDonald on August 6, 1939, and they had four sons. He preceded her in death on September 6, 1968.
LaVerne married Clifford Justice on September 6, 1969, and they moved to Whitney where she worked as a beautician at the Cut & Curl Beauty Shop from 1981 to 1987. Mr. Justice died in 1985. She then moved to Gatesville and married Lester “Dad” Manning on June 22, 1992, and they would have been married for 14 years this month.
LaVerne enjoyed her family and friends and always had a good time wherever she went. She loved reading and studying the Bible and giving praise to God. She was a longtime Sunday school teacher in Waco. Her strong faith in Jesus Christ provided a Christian foundation for her life. She was “Our Rock.”
She will be remembered as a loving mother, wife, grandmother, “Mee Maw”, great-grandmother and great-great-grandmother to all of her family. Laverne was past Noble Grand of the Rebekah Lodge #16 in Waco. She was a member of Faith Tabernacle Assembly of God Church while in Waco. She attended Eastwood Baptist Church since moving to Gatesville in 1992.
She was preceded in death by her previous husbands, parents, one sister and five brothers.
She is survived by her husband, Lester Manning of Gatesville; four sons, Jim W. McDonald and wife Vivian of Wimberly, Jerry L. McDonald and wife Charlotte of Robinson, Larry C. McDonald and wife Linda Lou of Gatesville and John W. McDonald and wife Eva of Waco; a brother, Willard Wesley Barber and wife Billie of Waco; 10 grandchildren; great-grandchildren; great-great-grandchildren; nieces; nephews; and a host of loving friends and church family.
The family wishes to extend thanks to the nursing staff at Hillside Nursing Center, CMH Home Health and Vista Care Hospice in Temple.
