Edith Duke Rose
Edith Duke Rose (Farquhar), 86, passed away on Thursday, July 3, 2008. She was born on September 22, 1921, in Oil City, Louisiana, to Sherman and Mabel Farquhar, the third of four girls. While in her freshman year at Louisiana Baptist College, she met W.C. Duke, who she married on New Year’s Day, 1939. To this union was born four children, three of whom survive her. Edith’s lifelong ambition was to have a Christian marriage and home, and be the best wife and mother she could be, while serving her Lord. She was, without a doubt, successful. Edith was widowed in 1978 and within two years, having never really held a job, she was the hostess at the Chaparral Lodge at the Baptist Conference Center in Glorieta, N.M. She so loved this calling and was saddened when it ended some seven years later. In 1993, she and Hooper J. Rose were wed and had four very fun-filled years, mostly spent traveling in their RV meeting new and wonderful friends wherever they went. After Hooper’s death in 1997, Edith continued being active at church, traveling and being ever the lover of games, playing dominos and cards at all the local churches in Danbury and Angleton.

Gwendolyn Benham Landa
Gwendolyn Benham Landa, 82, passed away Saturday, July 12, 2008, in Angleton, Texas. She was preceded in death by her loving husband, Bill Landa, in 2004; her brother, Bernard; and her parents.
Gwen was born May 12, 1926, in Breckenridge, Texas, to Clarence and Frances Benham. She was the oldest of 11 children. She grew up in and around the oilfields of East Texas, and graduated from Henderson High School in 1944. After high school, she attended the Memorial Hospital School of Nursing and the University of Houston. She graduated in 1947 as a Registered Nurse. In college, she made many life-long friends and found her passion for nursing that continued all through her life. She loved nursing and worked for various doctors, hospitals and the Brazoria County Health Department. She also performed private nursing care for families in Brazoria County. Gwen also worked for Dow Chemical as an Industrial Medicine nurse until she retired in 1982. After retirement she was able to devote more time to her hobbies — painting, gardening, needlepoint and making stuffed animals for her grandchildren. She also enjoyed traveling with her husband to different places around the United States to visit family members and see the sights!
She is survived by her children, Sue Abshire and husband, Bobby, of Angleton, Reg Beaty and wife, Lyn, of Houston, Karl Beaty and wife, Betty, of Danbury, Peggy Willis of Lake Jackson; and son, Bill Landa of Lake Jackson. She also had 12 grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren and one great-grandchild on the way. She was very proud of all of them. Mom was a generous giver, supporting many different charities and good works. Mom always requested that friends make a donation to a charity of their choice instead of sending flowers to her funeral.
The family would like to extend heartfelt gratitude to the staff and all the employees of Cypresswoods Nursing Home in Angleton for the outstanding love and care of Mrs. Landa.
James Edward Boren “Germ”
Jimmy left this world to be with our Lord at 5:40 p.m. on July 11th after a long battle with illness. Throughout his life Jimmy was an avid horseman who could be seen on the trailrides, in the roping arenas or just riding around the house with the kids. He worked as a welder and was a member of Pipefitters Local 211. Most of all he was a doting father to his girls, Kodi Maynard and Christins Jackson. Although divorced at the time of his death, he was a loving husband and the last eight years of his life his joy was in the three grandchildren that he and Ginger shared, Haley Maynard and Hannah and Cordell Jackson. They were the sunlight in his life and, as their beloved “Pappy,” he was definitely the apple of their eyes. He was also a loving son to his mother, Carrie Lou Hoots.
He was always a talker and never met a stranger. He had a glowing smile and an infectious personality that will live on in the hearts of those who knew him.
We are grateful for every second that the good Lord gave us with him and are certain that he is now filling Heaven with the wonderful chatting and laughter that will be missed so greatly here on Earth.
Funeral services will be held at 2:00 p.m. Wednesday, July 16, 2008, in the Palms Funeral Home Chapel. Burial will follow in Colonial Cemetery in Brazoria.
