Maggie Marie Phillips Brigance
Maggie Marie Phillips Brigance slipped quietly into the arms of God on Saturday morning, May 31, 2008. Born April 9, 1916, to Maggie Elizabeth Handy and Anthony Venner Phillips in Butler, Oklahoma, Marie was the baby of the family and was nicknamed “Teetletot” by her father. Marie graduated as salutatorian of her class at Butler High School in 1932 and attended Southwestern Oklahoma Teachers College for two years before moving to Alvin, Texas, to help her mother run a successful café and boarding house business. On February 12, 1938, Marie married Joseph Harris Brigance in Bay City, Texas and was welcomed into the family by William and Juliette Brigance and the First Presbyterian Church of Brazoria, where she remained a member until her death. After settling in Sweeny for one year, Joe and Marie built a small home on the Brigances’ Holly Farms in Wild Peach. In a little over four years, Marie gave birth to three children, Mary Ruth, Jo Anne and William Philip. Throughout her 70 years as a resident of Brazoria County, Marie served her family and community with a gracious and determined spirit. She was a charter member of the Brazoria Home Demonstration Club and the Brazoria Study Club, a ruling elder at the First Presbyterian Church of Brazoria, treasurer of the Brazoria Cemetery Association and active member of the Brazoria Library Association, Brazoria County Historical Commission and Keep Brazoria Beautiful. Marie was a 50-year member of the Order of Eastern Star, Chapter 74, Past Mother Advisor of the Brazoria Rainbow Girls Assembly 262, and was selected for the organization’s highest honor, the Grand Cross of Color. Marie loved to cook and entertain for her family and friends, was an avid bridge player and her green thumb produced beautiful gardens.
