Services for Doris Anita Doyle Thompson, 81, of Grapeland, Texas, formerly of Friday, Texas, were held at 11:00 a.m. Thursday, May 20, 2004, in the First Baptist Church of Groveton, Texas. Bro. Lewis Jones and Bro. Kenneth Myers officiated.
Burial followed in the Ellis Prairie Cemetery in Friday, Texas.
Mrs. Thompson was born July 8, 1922, in Friday, Trinity County, Texas, and passed away May 18, 2004, in Grapeland, Houston County, Texas.
She was preceded in death by her husband of 52 years, Woodrow Venson Thompson; and parents, Nora Belle Pruitt and William Doyle.
Survivors include a sister, Gussie Lee Dominy of Crockett; a daughter, Patricia Ann and husband, James Vernell Anderson, of Grapeland; four sons, James Woodrow Thompson and wife, Mary, of Angleton, Alan Venson Thompson and wife, Mary, of San Antonio, Doyle Luther Thompson and wife, Carol, of College Station and Charles Newton Thompson and wife, Amy, of Austin; grandchildren, James Leon Anderson and wife, Amy, of Mineola, Shelly Ann Lemons of Huntsville, Matthew Todd Thompson and wife, Christine, of Houston, Gregory Doyle Thompson and wife, Amy, of Dallas, Tamara Jean Latham and husband, Marshall, of Kilgore, Amy Ruede and husband, Jim, of San Antonio, Julie Beth Thompson of College Station, Michael Venson Thompson of Novato, California, Casey James Thompson of Angleton, Lisa Lorraine of Angleton and Everett Thompson of Austin; and great-grandchildren, Austin Anderson, Riley Anderson, Jackson Anderson, Mason Lemons, Megan Thompson, Chase Thompson, Nathan Thompson, Justin Thomson, Madilyn Latham, Jonathan Latham, Andrea Latham and Wesley Winters. Doris was a member of the First Baptist Church of Groveton, Texas. She taught preschool Sunday School classes in Angleton and Friday for 32 years. She also served as W.M.U. director and church clerk. She was a National Flower Show judge, a member of the American Hemerocallis Society, the organizer and charter member of the Japonica Garden Club of Friday and a charter member of the Pineywoods Heritage League (now the Trinity County Historical Commission).
Pallbearers were Leon Anderson, Casey Thompson, Matthew Thompson, Jim Ruede, Greg Thompson and Marshall Latham.
Honorary pallbearers were Jerry Mac Anderson, J.E. Anderson, Raymond Monroe, Tommy Joe Thompson and James Doyle.

ERNEST CLAIR REA JR.
Ernest Clair Rea Jr., age 91, died Thursday, May 20, 2004. He was born Oct. 13, 1912, in Des Moines, Iowa, the son of Ernest Clair Rea and Nelle Marlatt Rea.
In 1928, at the age of 15, he moved with his family to St. Louis, Missouri, where he graduated from Soldan High School in January 1930. He attended the University of Missouri and graduated in 1936 with a bachelor of journalism degree. He was a member of the Alpha Tau Omega national fraternity and served as president of the University of Missouri chapter.
During his college years, he organized a male quartet, and with them took one year out of school to travel with a Major Bowes Unit, which was featured in most of the large theaters in the country.
Ernie married Mickey Tubb of Sweetwater, Texas, in 1939, and they moved to Louisville, Kentucky, where he worked as writer and producer of radio programs for Radio Station WHAS, one of the premier stations of the CBS radio network. He was also a reader at the American Printing House for the Blind in Louisville, recording many booksand the monthly Readers Digest, all of which were distributed through the Library of Congress.
He was sent by Radio Station WHAS in 1941 to Louisiana to report the Army Maneuvers of that year and pioneered direct reporting from the field by radio.
In 1942, he volunteered for duty in the United States Navy and in early 1943 was commissioned as a lieutenant junior grade. He was sent to Harvard University for indoctrination and training as a naval communicator. After further duty at the sub-chaser training center at Miami Beach, he was assigned to the Destroyer Escort No. 795, where he served in both the Atlantic and Pacific oceans until the end of the war in the Pacific, and was discharged as a lieutenant commander.
Ernie and family came to Texas in 1947 and bought a Ben Franklin Store, which he operated in Lake Jackson for 15 years. In 1952, he was elected chairman of the Charter Commission of the city of Lake Jackson, and for two years served in that capacity while a charter was prepared for the city. It was approved by a vote of the citizens of Lake Jackson in 1954, and Ernie was elected in that year mayor of the city, a position he held for two terms. He was appointed by subsequent councils a number of times to serve as chairman of charter review commissions.
In 1959, he was appointed to the Velasco Drainage District. He served 10 years as a drainage district commissioner.
In 1960, he became a partner and stockholder in the firms of Monical and Rea and Monical and Powell Inc. Monical and Powell, an industrial construction company, was followed in 1972 by U.S. Contractors Inc. and its associated companies.
Ernie served as vice president and member of the board of the Brazosport Chamber of Commerce and was selected in 1965 as the outstanding citizen of Brazosport. He served two terms as president of the Lake Jackson Business Association. He was active in the Presbyterian Church, serving as deacon and treasurer and, for a year or two, as choir director.
He served on the board of directors of the Lake Jackson Bank for 15 years. He was a director and officer for several years on the Brazosport Fine Arts Council and was a member of the board of trustees of the council. He participated in a good many productions of the Little Theatre of Brazosport.
He served on the board of the United Way and conducted two successful money-raising campaigns for that organization.
Ernie was a long-time member of the Riverside Country Club, serving on its board and as vice president and greens committee chairman. He was always active in the use of its facilities for tennis and golf.
He married Eleanor Nabors on September 18, 1999.
Ernest is survived by his wife, Eleanor Rea; two children, Judith Rea MacLean, of St. Louis, Missouri, and John David Rea, of Washington, D.C.; five grandchildren, Kent MacLean, of St. Louis, Missouri, Brian MacLean, of St. Louis, Missouri, Jennifer Rea Verheggen, of Utrecht, The Netherlands, Anne Rea Reynaert, of Manhattan Beach, California, and John David Rea, of San Diego, California; a great-grandson, Ryan Reynaert of Manhattan Beach, California; four sisters, Betty Proctor, of Columbia, Missouri, Frances Grant, of Lake George, New York, Patricia Maguire, of St. Louis, Missouri, and Joan Henson of Vancouver, Washington, and many nieces, nephews and cousins.
Visitation will be from 5:00 until 7:00 p.m. Sunday, May 23, at Lakewood Funeral Chapel, 98 N. Dixie Drive. A memorial service will be at 2:00 p.m. Monday, May 24, at First Presbyterian Church of Lake Jackson, 102 Yaupon Drive.

Funeral services for Florida Mae Green, 53, of Freeport, will be Tuesday, May 25, 2004, at 11:00 a.m. at First Missionary Baptist Church in Freeport with the Rev. Dr. J.V. Williams officiating. Burial will follow at Houston Memorial Gardens in Pearland, Texas.
She died Wed., May 19, 2004, at Brazosport Memorial Hospital in Lake Jackson.
She is survived by her husband, James Green, Holiday Lakes; 2 sons: Morris Green, Freeport, Jesse Johnson, Ft. Roel “Lito” Gutierrez, 37, of Lake Jackson, Texas passed away on Sunday, May 16, 2004. He was born March 24, 1967.

He is survived by his wife, Angie Gutierrez of Lake Jackson; parents Louis Sr. and Delia Gutierrez of Oakville; daughters, Ashley Nicole and Amber Marie of Lake Jackson; brothers Louis Gutierrez Jr. of Oakville and Jerry Gutierrez of San Antonio; and sister Rosie Galindo of San Antonio.

ROBERT C. REEVES SR.
Robert Coleman Reeves Sr., age 68 of Victoria, Texas, died Sunday, May 23, 2004. He was born February 26, 1936, in Smith County, Texas, to the late Ruben M. and Pearl Grisham Reeves. Mr. Reeves was a retired school superintendent.
Survivors include his wife, Betty Sue Phillips Reeves of Victoria; two sons, Robert Coleman Reeves Jr. of Houston and Phillip Wayne Reeves of Katy; one sister June Elliot-Riza of Tyler; three grandchildren Bradley Jordan, Patrick Todd and Kristen Elizabeth.

VESTER CARL "BUSS" TROUTMAN
Vester Carl “Buss” Troutman was born January 17, 1914, in Purcell, Oklahoma, and heard Jesus say “well done good and faithful servant” on May 22, 2004. He was a resident of Baytown at the time of his passing, but for many years resided in Sweeny, Texas. He was an ordained minister with the Assemblies of God for 40 years, faithfully touching lives and serving as pastor to many congregations throughout Texas.
He is survived by his loving wife of 66 years, Eula Mae Hodges Troutman; four daughters, Lareta Williams and husband, Frelan, of Baytown, Carolyn Hagemeier of West Columbia, Laverne Charles and husband, Jimmie, of Coldsprings, Pat Shepard and husband, James, of Kilgore, one son, Vernon and wife, Brenda, of Houston; three sisters, Ruby Liles of Norman, Oklahoma, Laura Malena of Lindsay, Oklahoma, Bertha Anderson and husband, Sam, of Duncan, Oklahoma; three brothers, Thomas J. Troutman of Edom, Texas, Olen Troutman and wife, Nita, of Baytown, Jessie Troutman and wife, Dorothy, of Ace, Texas; one very special niece, Evelyn Walker of Baytown; 15 grandchildren, 27 great-grandchildren and a host of other nieces, nephews and friends.

Michael was a lifetime resident of the Brazosport area and a member of the Unity Missionary Baptist Church. He devoted his life to his family and to his business, Warner Machine, Inc. in Freeport. He will be remembered for his passions, fishing, racing and spending time with his friends and family.
