KOREN KEEVER CARIKER

1922 - 2004

Koren Keever Cariker was born at home on May 23, 1922, in Kemp,  Texas, and departed this life on May 19, 2004, at her home in West Columbia,  Texas, at the age of 81.

The family will be present for visitation at Baker Funeral Home, West Columbia,  Texas, on Friday, May 21, 2004, from 6 to 8 p.m.

Funeral services will be conducted at the Columbia United Methodist Church, 315 S. 16th Street, West Columbia,  Texas, on Saturday, May 22, 2004, at 10:00 a.m. with the Reverend Greg Rogers and the Reverend Rex Carlton officiating, with burial following at Cedar Lawn.

Koren was the youngest of five children born to her parents, the Reverend George Leroy Keever and Lochie Byrd Keever. Her parents had come to  Texas from North Carolina before she was born. During the early years in  Texas, they lived in a number of rural  Texas towns as her father, a Methodist minister, served the different churches. Koren and her siblings were moved around frequently during their childhoods. Upon graduating from high school, Koren attended  Texas State College for Women in Denton and then transferred to Duke University, where she earned an associate degree in medical technology. She worked as a medical technologist in Dallas during WWII. After the war ended, her mother encouraged her to come home to Austin to return to college and complete her bachelor’s degree at the University of  Texas. She followed that advice, and while attending the university, met and fell in love with the man she was to marry. Joe Cariker had returned to Austin upon his discharge from the Navy following WWII and, utilizing the GI bill, was pursuing his education at the university as well. Following their graduations from the university, Joe left to take employment in Denver, Colorado. Koren followed him to Colorado, and a short time later he proposed. They were married in Childress,  Texas, on October 29, 1949, with Koren’s father officiating. Over the next few years, while living in Colorado, they had three children: Deborah, Bill and Leigh.

In 1962, Joe and Koren accepted a job with the  Texas Parks and Wildlife that would bring them to West Columbia. They were hired to oversee the operations of Varner-Hogg State Park just outside West Columbia. Koren served as a clerk/curator of the museum artifacts and remained in that position while her husband served as the park superintendent for 25 years. They both retired in 1987. Over the years, they had developed a love of antiques, and Koren was instrumental in assisting the local historical society in the acquisition of antiques for the Laura Underwood home, and assisting the Brazoria County Historical Museum with displays, as well. Koren’s community involvement also included serving as president of the First Capitol Study Club. She has been a member of the Columbia United Methodist Church since coming to West Columbia. Koren attended the Sojourner’s class there and has missed more than anything, being in her Sunday school class on Sunday mornings. She was the driving force behind the Methodist Flame Stitchers needlepoint group. With her guidance, the sanctuary has both Crismons and chancel rail kneelers done in needlepoint.

She leaves behind, her husband of 54 years, Joe W. Cariker of West Columbia; a daughter, Deborah C. Burns and son-in-law, Jim Burns, of West Columbia; a son, William (Bill) B. Cariker and daughter-in-law, Lynne Boggs Cariker, of Austin; a son, Leigh C. Cariker, and daughter-in-law, Judy Cariker; and granddaughters, Kaitlyn Abigail (Abby) Cariker and Gwendolyn Kathleen (Gwen) Cariker, all of Ft. Worth. Other family members mourning her death include her brother-in-law, Fred H. Cariker Jr. and wife, Shirley, of Amarillo; two nieces; and one nephew.

Her parents; as well as three sisters, Mary, Ruth and Kathryn; and one brother, George, preceded her in death.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests that memorials be made to the Columbia United Methodist Church Memorial Fund, Central EMS, the Christian Senior Citizens Center or the charity of your choice.

Our special thanks go to the Monday Morning Methodists and the Rev. Greg Rogers and the members of the Columbia United Methodist Church for their constant prayer support. Thanks also to the members of St. Mary’s Episcopal Church for their caring and support. The family greatfully acknowledges the assistance of AMED Hospice for care during Koren’s final days. Last but not least, our family could not have cared for Koren all these months without the assistance of caregivers and staff at Help Inc. and her special caregivers, Cynthia, Nina and Nathalie.
