Mattie Williams
Mattie Williams, 94, of Jacksboro and formerly of Gatesville, died Sept. 26, 2003 in Mineral Wells.
Funeral services were held Monday at Scott’s Funeral Home in Gatesville with the Rev. Jim Bell officiating. Burial was in Restland Cemetery in Gatesville.
Mrs. Williams was born March 3, 1909, in Gatesville, the daughter of the late Scott Key and India Martin. On July 6, 1935, she married Raymond Williams, and they resided in the Gatesville area most of their 59 years of married life. They moved to Jacksboro in 1991. She was preceded in death by her husband, Raymond, in 1994; and a daughter, Shirley Fay Shadowens, in 1982.
Survivors include her son, Harold Williams; a sister, Molly Manning of Houston; four grandchildren; and six great-grandchildren.
Patsy (Pat) June Thompson
Pat Thompson died in a Waco hospital Tuesday, September 23, 2003.
Funeral services were held Thursday, September 25, at the Gatesville Funeral Home with the Rev. T.R. Crosby officiating. Burial was in Pidcoke Cemetery.
Mrs. Thompson was born February 1, 1928, in Gatesville to the late Aubrey (Spud) and Ruby Simpson Walker. She graduated from Gatesville High School in 1945. Pat married Roy Edwin (Red) Thompson on March 17, 1945. After moving from Grass Valley, CA, at the end of WW II, she and her husband lived in Gatesville, Stephenville and Temple before returning to Gatesville in 1955. She was a secretary for 19 years at the Gatesville School for Boys, and was secretary to the warden at the Mountain View Unit until retiring in 1993. After retiring, she volunteered at the Coryell County Museum, Gatesville Care Center and her church, Trinity Baptist, where she was a charter member. She had also been active along with her husband at Eastwood Baptist Church and First Baptist Church of Gatesville in previous years. Recently, she had been active in children’s Sunday school, Baptist Women and the homebound ministry of Trinity Baptist.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Red; her sister, Grace Martin; and a granddaughter, Karen Thompson.
She is survived by her sons, Michael Thompson and wife Dianna of Waco, Rick Thompson and wife Corrine of Mildred, and George Thompson and wife Linda of Moody; and daughter, Lisa Collins and husband Jesse of Gatesville; by her grandchildren, Dr. Tanna Thompson, Nicole Cheek and husband Brian, Kenny Thompson and wife Jeanna, Kathryn Thompson, Amanda Carver and husband Jeff, Lucas Thompson and wife Tammy, and Sharla and Carol Collins. She is survived by two step-grandchildren, Jeanne Jester and Amy Jester Sherwood. She is also survived by five great-grandchildren and two step-great-grandchildren.
George “Jodie” Summers
George “Jodie” Summers of Paint Rock died Sept. 25, 2003 at his residence. He was 71.
Funeral services were held Saturday at the First Baptist Church of Paint Rock with Pastor Chad Barnett officiating. Burial was in Paint Rock Cemetery with graveside services being held by the Masonic Lodge.
Mr. Summers was born March 5, 1932,, the son of the late Beaulah “Mae” Taylor Summers and Edward “Shorty” Summers. He attended O’Donnell High School and served in the United States Navy from 1951 to 1955. On May 15, 1965, he married Elaine Pettiet. She preceded him in death on Dec. 31, 1983. She was a cathotic technician with Lone Star Gas, retiring after 20 years of service. He joined the team of Scurlock/Ashland Oil Co. where he retired in 1989. On May 7, 1993, he married Edna Ellen Allbright. He was a member of the Masonic Lodge for 45 years, a 32nd degree Mason, member of the Eastern Star and a Shriner. He was preceded in death by two sisters, Lorene Engle and Louise Altum; and one brother, Donald Wayne Summers.
Survivors include his wife, Edna Ellen Summers; two sons, Jodie Blaine Summers of Stockdale and Gordon Summers of Daytona Beach, FL; three daughters, Crystal Bednar of San Angelo, Bridget Bednar of Vancourt and Sherri Corder of Ozark, AR; two stepsons, Wayne Allbright of McKinney and Marvin Allbright Jr. of Waco; stepdaughter, Sheila Roper of San Angelo; four sisters, Vada Flemming of Paint Rock, Wynell Perrin of Amarillo, Inez Lee of Gatesville and Pat Sherbert of Vincent; one brother, Eddie Summers of Flat; 11 grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren.
The family suggests memorials be made to Hospice of San Angelo, Meals for the Elder, Cancer Society or a charity of choice.
John C. Sadler
John C. Sadler, age 85, of the Mound community, died Sept. 26, 2003 in a Temple hospital.
Graveside services were held Monday at the Mound Cemetery.
Mr. Sadler was born July 9, 1918, in Pittsburgh, PA. He graduated from Augusta College in Augusta, GA, where he earned a law degree. He married Helen Dorries in 1945, and she preceded him in death in 1985. He married Helen Garrison in 1988. He retired from the Army after 23 years of service, having served in World War II where he was a Japanese prisoner of war for more than three years and he was a Purple Heart recipient. He was a civil service employee as a radio instructor for 15 years. He was a member of Maples Masonic Lodge 791 in Flat and the Scottish Rite. He resided in Mound for more than 23 years. He was a Baptist. He was also preceded in death by a son, Franklin Troy Sadler in 1980.
Survivors include his wife, Helen Sadler of Mound; two sons, Ray Sadler of Bucksport, ME, and John Walter Sadler of Sweetwater, TN; a sister, Lois Kolander of San Diego, CA; a brother, Dan Sadler, of St. George, UT; and numerous grandchildren.
Allie Atchley
Allie Mae Flippen Atchley died Oct. 30, 2003 in Hamilton at the age of 106.
Funeral services were held Sunday at the Riley Funeral Home Chapel. Burial was in Murphree Cemetery at Evant.
Mrs. Atchley was born March 30, 1897, in Gatesville, the daughter of the late Richard (Dick) Flippen and Janie Coffee Flippen. On Dec. 20, 1915, she married Earnest Atchley in Vista Mountain. He preceded her in death on Sept. 15, 1961.
Survivors include five children, Ola Mae Warren, Darvin Atchley and Athleen Prazak, all of Hamilton, Garvine Chumney of Fort Worth and Lavada Spruiell of Dawson; nine grandchildren; 17 great-grandchildren; and 13 great-great-grandchildren.
Thomas Joseph Winters
Thomas Joseph Winters of Goldthwaite died Nov. 2, 2003 at his residence. He was 46.
Funeral services were held Wednesday at the First United Methodist Church in Goldthwaite. Burial was in the Goldthwaite Memorial Cemetery.
Mr. Winters was born Oct. 7, 1957, in Lampasas to Thomas Earl and Wynona Barnett Winters. He moved to Goldthwaite in 2001 from Oklahoma. He was a businessman and a Methodist.
Survivors include a son, Thomas Marshall Winters of Goldthwaite; his parents, Thomas Earl and Wynona Winters of Goldthwaite; two sisters, Maggie Jones of Goldthwaite and Molly Winters of Evant; grandmother, Vallie Barnett of Goldthwaite; and one granddaughter.

Emmett Smith
Retired Sgt. 1st Class Emmett Smith, 82, of Copperas Cove died Nov. 1, 2003 at his residence.
Funeral services were held Thursday at Crawford-Bowers Funeral Home in Copperas Cove. Burial with full military honors was held later Thursday at Fort Sam Houston National Cemetery in San Antonio.
He was born Feb. 3, 1921, in Montgomery, where he was raised and educated. He joined the U.S. Army Air Corps in 1941 and served in World War II in the European Theater. He also served in the Korean War and retired from the Army in 1967. On Dec. 22, 1950, he married Gerda Freund in Wolfgang, Germany. Following his military service, he completed a career with the Texas Department of Corrections, retiring in 1985.
Survivors include his wife, Gerda Smith of Copperas Cove; two sons, Johnny W. Smith of Gatesville and Robert E. Smith of San Antonio; a daughter, Monica Smith Poindexter of Copperas Cove; four grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.
Erma B. Henry
Erma B. Henry, 80, of Gatesville, died Oct. 24, 2003 at a Gatesville hospital.
Private services were held.
Mrs. Henry was born Sept. 28, 1923, in Washington, D.C., to the late Sanford and Lily Sparshot Brooks.
Survivors include her husband, Floyd Henry of Gatesville; and one brother, Sanford Brooks Jr. of Chesapeake Bay.

Opal Lucille Blanchard
Opal Lucille Blanchard, 84, formerly of Gatesville, died Nov. 5, 2003 in Greenville.
Graveside services were held Saturday at Smith King Cemetery in Mound.
Mrs. Blanchard was born April 19, 1919, in The Grove, the daughter of the late Ernest Andrews and Roxie Ann Edgar Andrews. She was raised and attended school at Mound. On Sept. 5, 1964, she married Kenneth Ray Blanchard Sr. They resided near Gatesville all their married lives. He preceded her in death on Jan. 28, 1992. She was a homemaker and a member of the Church of Christ. She was also preceded in death by three grandchildren, Jon Blanchard, Andrew Blanchard and Cheyanne Blanchard.
Survivors include children, Bonnie Richmond of Whitney, Kenneth Blanchard of Whitney, Bill Blanchard of Cooper, Erroll Blanchard of Gatesville and Mary Ann Bridges of Bandera; eight grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren.
Paul Lloyd
Paul Lloyd, 57, of Buffalo and formerly of Waco, died Nov. 18, 2003 at his residence.
Graveside services were held Monday at Restland Cemetery in Gatesville.
Mr. Lloyd was born Oct. 27, 1946, in Gatesville to Paul and Wanda Loyd. He attended school in Gatesville and after high school, he joined the Army. He was preceded in death by his father, Paul Lloyd, in 1992; and a son, Charles Ray Lloyd in 2002.
Survivors include his parents, Wayne and Wanda Hestand; daughters, Melissa Whitehead and Jessica Lloyd; sons, Paul Lloyd Jr. and Cliff Lloyd; sisters, Connie Henderson, Wanda Sue Anderson, Paula Adcock and Doris Tidwell; brothers, Larry Hestand, Frank Lloyd and Billy Don Lloyd; and five grandchildren.
Effie Mobley
Effie Mobley, 88, of Lytton Springs and formerly of Mound, died Nov. 25, 2003 at a Lockhart nursing home.
Funeral services were held Saturday at the Gatesville Funeral Home with Pastor Jack Cox officiating. Burial was in Mound Cemetery.
Mrs. Mobley was born Jan. 27, 1915, near Crawford to the late Will and Hester Pearl Alford. She was preceded in death by her husband, Tee Mobley; a grandson, Vincent Hodge; a brother, T.J. Alford; and a sister, Annie Mae Horton.
Survivors include two daughters, Margaret Hodge of Lytton Springs and Joyce Van Cleave of Marlin; sisters, Marybelle Donaldson of Fort Worth and Ellen Gibbons of Waco; a brother, Robert Alford of Valley Mills; six grandchildren; 14 great-grandchildren; and one great-great-grandson.
