Leta Wilson
Leta Wilson of Waco died Feb. 15, 2003 at the age of 84.
Graveside services were held Monday at Oakwood Cemetery with Pastor David Story officiating.
Mrs. Wilson was born Sept. 16, 1918, in Waco, the daughter of the late Alva and Annie Byran. She lived her entire life in Waco, where she attended Waco High School and Baylor University. She married Rabe Wilson Jr. in 1941. She was a member of Richfield Christian Church. She was preceded in death by her husband, Rabe Wilson Jr.; a son, Byran Wilson; one brother; and three sisters.
Survivors include a son, Brooks Wilson of Jonesboro; and a daughter, Lynn Lacy of Waco.
Honorary pallbearers were Henry Dietz, Pete Simmon and John McNamara.
The family suggests memorials be made to Providence Hospice in Waco.
L.A. Miller
Lawrence Adolph Miller of Gatesville died Feb. 19, 2003 in Gatesville. He was 93.
Funeral services were held Friday at Scott’s Funeral Home with the Rev. Johnny Miller officiating. Burial was in the Moody-Leon Cemetery.
Mr. Miller was born Nov. 7, 1909, in Purmela, the son of the late W.M. and Emma (Moore) Miller. On Dec. 17, 1941, he married Florence Ruth Winkler and she preceded him in death on Dec. 20, 1972. He farmed southeast of Temple from 1953 to 1973. He had been a resident of Gatesville since 1987 and was a member of the First United Methodist Church. He was also preceded in death by an infant daughter, Terry Jean Miller; three brothers; and two sisters.
Survivors include a son, Charles Miller of Temple.

Mr. Billy Clay McClellan
Mr. Billy Clay McClellan, age 77 of Gatesville, died Thursday, February 20, 2003, at a Temple hospital.
Funeral services were held at 2 p.m. Sunday, February 23, at the Gatesville Funeral Home Chapel with the Rev. Steve Dominy and Nub Donaldson officiating. Private interment was held in the Gatesville City Cemetery.
He was born on February 9, 1926, in Gatesville, Texas. He was the youngest child of the late Dan and Aline Leaird McClellan. He graduated from Gatesville High School in 1942. Shortly after graduation, he joined the U.S. Navy, serving on the USS Bexar in the Pacific front during World War II. When he was discharged from the Navy, he attended Baylor University and graduated with a B.B.A. in 1949. That same year, he married Mildred Patterson and began his career at Leaird’s Department Store working for his grandparents and uncle, Byron Leaird Jr. He served in every capacity of the business, with his favorites being shoe sales and men’s suits. It was common knowledge in Coryell County that Billy Clay could judge a person’s shoe size or suit size the minute they walked through the door. His gift in dealing with customers as well as his warm and congenial personality made him one of the more successful and well-respected businessmen of Coryell County. He retired in 1989, but continued to visit the store regularly, greeting customers with a sincere welcome. Billy Clay participated in many capacities of civic duty, the Salvation Army being his favorite. He was an avid golfer and sports enthusiast. His favorite football teams were the Dallas Cowboys, Baylor Bears and the Gatesville Hornets. He was also known for his singing talents and for years he participated in the First Baptist Church Choir and in numerous weddings in the community.
He is survived by his wife, Mildred McClellan of Gatesville; two sons, Clay McClellan and wife Carolyn of Gatesville and Jeb McClellan and wife Rhetta, also of Gatesville; grandchildren, Carly, Kyle, Dan, Amelia and Leaird; and a niece, Carolyn Donaldson.
Memorials may be made to the American Heart Association or to First Baptist Church.
L.J. Huffman
Logan John “L.J.” Huffman of Lorena died Feb. 19, 2003 in McGregor. He was 84.
Funeral services were held Saturday at Cole Funeral Home Chapel in McGregor with the Rev. Bill Schibler officiating. Burial was in Osage Cemetery.
Mr. Huffman was born July 31, 1918, in Turnersville, the son of the late Thomas Allen and Ada Jane (Gardner) Huffman. He graduated from Turnersville High School in 1935 and attended business college in Dallas. He was a member of Turnersville Methodist Church. On July 16, 1941, he married Anna Pearl Gatlin. After serving in the U.S. Army, he was employed at General Tire and Rubber Company in Waco for more than 17 years. In 1960, he formed Huffman Rodeo Company, and produced amateur rodeos across the state. He was preceded in death by two brothers, Loyd Huffman and Dan Huffman; and two sisters, Lola Wolf and Naomi Latham.
Survivors include his wife, Anna Pearl Huffman; sons, Harlan Huffman of McGregor and Gary Huffman of Lorena; daughter, Jan Willis of Gholson; six grandchildren; and 13 great-grandchildren.
Naomi Head
Naomi Clary Head, 92, of Athens died Feb. 20, 2003 in an Athens nursing home.
Graveside services were held Monday at the Houston National Cemetery in Houston with the Rev. Bobby Ferguson officiating.
Mrs. Head was born Nov. 9, 1910, in Coryell County to the late Robert Lee and Eula May Reese Clary. She was also preceded in death by her husband, T.C. Head in 1978. She had lived in Athens for the past 10 years. She previous resided in Waco and Texas City. She was a homemaker.
Survivors include a son, Kenneth Head of Athens; step-son, Gary Head of Ennis; sister, Kathryn Cohen of Athens; three grandchildren; and six great-grandchildren.
Mrs. Betty Jo Day
Mrs. Betty Day, age 72 of Gatesville, died Tuesday, April 8, 2003, in Gatesville.
Graveside services were held Thursday, April 10, at Osage Cemetery.
Mrs. Day was born on June 8, 1930, in Osage, Texas, to the late Carl and Opal Edwards Etchison. She grew up in Osage and graduated from Crawford High School in 1946. She married Hal B. Day in 1953. They resided in Germany and Alabama, moving to Gatesville in 1962. He preceded her in death in 1990. She was also preceded in death by a daughter, Carla Day, in 1997.
She is survived by a daughter, Debra Day and husband David Shamel of Austin; granddaughter, Carly Key and husband Timmy of Gatesville; great-granddaughter, Kimberly Key; and a special friend, Richard Franklin and his son, Ben.
The family has requested that memorials be made to the Osage Cemetery Association.
Joe Warren
Joe Warren of Oglesby died April 10, 2003 in Oglesby. He was 61.
Funeral services were held Saturday at the First Baptist Church of Oglesby with the Rev. Aaron Taylor officiating. Interment was in Post Oak Cemetery.
Mr. Warren was born April 17, 1941, in Brown’s Creek, the son of the late Elzie Russell and Melva Oneta (Graham) Warren. He attended school in Copperas Cove. On Feb. 1, 1964, he married Vera Mae Davis in Killeen. For 10 years, until 1965, he served as assistant fire chief in Copperas Cove. For the next 10 years, he was supervisor for the Texas Youth Council. He then became a truck driver for Farmland Industries in McGregor until his retirement in 1996. He established the Dixie Cafe in Crawford in 1996 and retired in 1997. He was a member of the First Baptist Church of Oglesby.
He was preceded in death by a brother, Russell Warren; and grandchildren, Cathy Ann Warren, Christopher Pianderelli and D.J. Cockerham.
Survivors include his wife, Vera Warren of Oglesby; step-mother, Ouida Redus of Bonham; sons, Marty Warren of Copperas Cove and Dennis Warren of Moody; daughters, Margie Coombs of Copperas Cove and Jodi Shaw of Oglesby; brother, Terry Warren of Brazoria; sisters, Neta Woods and Kelly Mainez, both of Gatesville, and Anita Redus of Bonham; and 11 grandchildren; and one great-granddaughter.
Jo Ann Carol Stalnecker
Jo Ann Carol Stalnecker of Gatesville died April 9, 2003 at a local hospital. She was 57.
Graveside services were held Saturday at Restland Cemetery with Rex Tilly officiating.
Mrs. Stalnecker was born Dec. 14, 1945, in Springfield, Mass., the daughter of the late Joeseph and Angelina Cardano Choiniere. She served in the U.S. Army.
Survivors include her husband, Raymond Stalnecker; daughters, Dawn Walker and Melissa Owen; son, Timothy Stalnecker; and eight grandchildren.
Marie Sieben
Marie Sieben of Kirchberg, Germany, died April 9, 2003 in Kirchberg. She was 92.
Survivors include four daughters, Agnes Sharp of Gatesville and Erika Braun, Irene Dziombla and Rita Sieben, all of Germany; five grandchildren; and numerous great- and great-great-grandchildren.
Joe Pitts
Joe Pitts, 50, of Moody, died April 6, 2003 in Moody.
Funeral services were held Wednesday at Cole Funeral Home in McGregor with the Rev. Jon Gartman officiating. Interment was in Eagle Springs Cemetery.
Mr. Pitts was born July 7, 1952, in Gatesville where he lived until moving to Oglesby. He was a 1970 graduate of Oglesby High School. He moved to Moody in 1971, and owned and operated Alpha/Omega for the past four years. He was preceded in death by his father, Eugene Pitts; and a sister, Jo Ann Burgess.
Survivors include his mother, Lillie Mae Pitts of McGregor; daughter, Jennifer Ragsdale of Moody; brothers, Travis Goodwin of Moody, John Pitts of Oglesby and Jerry Pitts of Moody; and a sister, Mayetta Martin of Moody.

Janice Chambers
Janice Chambers died April 8, 2003 in Waco at the age of 64.
Funeral services were held Friday at Waco Memorial Funeral Home. Interment was in Waco Memorial Park North.
She was born Aug. 27, 1938, in Gatesville. She was a longtime member of North Waco Baptist Church. She was preceded in death by an infant son, Timothy Alan Chambers.
Survivors include her parents, William and Juanita Mayes of Waco; son, Jason Chambers of Hewitt; daughters, Cindy Chandler of Lorena and Christi Adams of Maypearl; brother, Norman Mayes of Maybell, CO; and eight grandchildren.
