Otha C. Snider
Otha C. Snider of San Angelo died Dec. 13, 2002 at the age of 80.
Funeral services were held Monday in the Robert Massie Riverside Chapel with the Rev. A.J. Kennemer officiating. Burial was in Lawnhaven Memorial Gardens.
Mr. Snider was born Nov. 5, 1922, in Evant, the son of the late Jess Snider and Gertrude Manos Snider. He graduated from Ireland High School in 1941. On May 21, 1946, he married Betty Lou Hale. He retired from General Telephone of the Southwest after 29 years. He was a former member of the San Angelo Saddle Club and was an EF Foundation representative, placing foreign exchange students in homes, for five years. He was preceded in death by two brothers, Earl Snider and Curtis Snider.
Survivors include his wife, Betty H. Snider; children, Jim Snider of Bryan, Joe Snider of Princeton, Jesse Snider of San Angelo and Jerri Plummer of San Angelo; brothers, Allen Snider of Fort Worth, Herbert Snider of McGregor and J.H. Snider of Turnersville; sisters, Julia Wicker and Jessie Lorene Bragewitz, both of Gatesville, and Laura Leach of League City; eight grandchildren; and one great-grandchild.
Jesse William Johnson
Jesse William Johnson of Burnet died Nov. 19, 2002 in Austin. He was 79.
Funeral services were held Nov. 22 at the Vanderveer Church of Christ in Burnet with Tim Denton officiating. Burial was in Grandview Cemetery in Grandview.
Mr. Johnson was born Sept. 12, 1923, in Maypearl. He married Edith Bowles on Aug. 23, 1943, in Hillsboro. He served in the U.S. Navy during World War II. He held several offices with the Rotary Club, and served as an elder for a Church of Christ in Gatesville during the 1960s, and for the Vanderveer Church of Christ for many years. He retired from Lone Star Gas as local manager for Burnet, Bertram and Marble Falls after 40 years with the company.
Survivors include his wife, Edith Johnson of Burnet; daughters, Judy Peveto of Hutto and Sandy Waddill of Richmond; sisters, Nell Gann and Thava Corbon, both of Fort Worth, and Mittie Wiginton of Cleburne; five grandchildren; and 10 great-grandchildren.
W.F. Barrington
W.F. (Bill) Barrington of Gatesville died Dec. 17, 2002 at a local nursing home. He was 96.
Graveside services were held Thursday at the Hillsdale Cemetery.
Mr. Barrington was born June 26, 1906, in Adamsville to the late Benjamin Franklin and Alice Harris Barrington. He grew up in San Saba and came to Coryell County as a young man. He married Ethel Barrington and they resided in Coryell County all their married lives. He worked for Dixon Lumber Company for many years. He was a Methodist. His wife preceded him in death.
Survivors include a son, Billy Barrington of Gatesville; and a grandson.
Luther F. Taylor
Luther F. Taylor of Gatesville died Jan. 5, 2003 in a local hospital. He was 83.
Funeral services were held Tuesday at Scott’s Funeral Home Chapel with the Rev. John Weaver officiating. Burial was in Restland Cemetery.
Mr. Taylor was born March 20, 1919, in Oglesby to the late John Nathan and Arizona Elizabeth (Cain) Taylor. He was an Army veteran of World War II, serving in the Fiji Islands and Guadalcanal, and was wounded on Aug. 2, 1943, in the New Georgia Islands. He received the Purple Heart, Asiatic-Pacific Campaign Medal and the Good Conduct Medal. On May 23, 1944, he married Geneva Elizabeth Brewer in the Stampede Valley community. He was an automobile mechanic at Fort Hood for 19 years, retiring in 1965. He and his wife moved to the Gatesville community in 1952.
Survivors include his wife, Geneva Taylor of Gatesville; one daughter, Sharon Paxton of Gatesville; two sons, Charles Taylor of Gatesville and Michael Taylor of Coryell City; one sister, Emerabell Armstrong of Big Spring; seven grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.
For those desiring, the family has designated the Mountain Baptist Church for memorial contributions.
Mike J. Davis
Mike J. Davis of Flat died Jan. 5, 2003 at the age of 35.
Graveside services were held Wednesday at the McDowell Cemetery in Belton.
Mr. Davis was born Dec. 12, 1967, in Killeen to Martha Ray Davis and the late Jim Davis. He was raised and attended school in Belton. On June 3, 1999, he married Lonnell Donaldson and they resided in Flat. He was a member of Nolan Valley Baptist Church.
Survivors include his wife, Lonnell Davis of Flat; son, Michael Davis; stepson, Jarrett Haferkamp; mother, Martha Davis of Temple; and brother, Floyd Davis of Temple.
A memorial fund for the family has been established at the Guaranty Bank & Trust of Gatesville/Extraco Banks.
Luis Valdez Fernandez
Luis Valdez Fernandez of Amarillo died Jan. 6, 2003 at the age of 57.
The family will conduct a memorial service at a later date.
Mr. Fernandez was born July 25, 1945, in Del Rio. He moved to Amarillo 10 years ago and was a subcontractor. He was Catholic.
Survivors include his wife, Juanita Lujan; a son, Luis Fernandez Jr. of Pharr; two brothers, Adolfo Fernandez of Gatesville and Joe Fernandez of Shelby, Mich.; two sisters, Mary Fernandez and Juanita Fernandez, both of Temple; and a granddaughter.
Frank Bird
Frank Bird of Bellevue, WA, died Jan. 7, 2003 at his residence. He was 65.
Funeral services were held Tuesday at Greenwood Memorial Park in Renton, WA. Burial was at Maple Valley-Hobart Cemetery.
Mr. Bird was born April 11, 1937 in Quail. He graduated from Gatesville High School and Texas Academic military Institute (TAMI) at Temple Junior College before serving in the U.S. Air Force from 1957-1961. He married Betty L. Edwards of Seattle on June 17, 1962. He had lived in Bellevue for 33 years. He was owner-operator of two dry cleaners prior to working as a building engineer at the St. Thomas Center, St. Edwards State Park, Lutheran Bible Institute, Security Pacific Bank and Children’s Orthopedic Medical Center, retiring in 2001. He recently served as an instructor at Renton Technical College. He was a member of the International Union of Operating Engineers Local 286 and Sons of Norway 2-40. He was preceded in death by his parents and a brother in Texas.
Survivors include his wife, Betty L. Bird of Bellevue; and a sister, Ann Anderson of Iowa.

Hazel Dyer
Hazel Dyer, 86, of Purmela, died Jan. 11, 2003 in a Waco hospital.
Graveside services were held Tuesday at Restland Cemetery with the Rev. Lee Vrombrock officiating.
Mrs. Dyer was born Oct. 31, 1916, in Coryell County, the daughter of the late Homer Cyrus Laxson and Bessie Forrest Laxson. She was a member of Purmela Baptist Church. She was preceded in death by her husband, Horace Dyer; and her son, Bob Dyer.
Survivors include a daughter, Linda Dyer; brother, Homer Laxson; three grandchildren; and eight great-grandchildren.
Mrs. Erma Lee Garrett Bridges
On January 11, 2003, our beloved mother, Erma Lee Garrett Bridges, passed from this life into the loving arms of the Lord.
Services were held at the Gatesville Funeral Home Chapel on Tuesday, January 14, 2003, at 10 a.m. Burial was in the Patrick Cemetery, Patrick Community near China Spring.
She was born on June 20, 1913, to Eddie and Mary Ellen Wheeler Garrett. She lived in the community of Rock Creek as a child and attended school at China Spring. On June 11, 1932, she married Thomas Guy Bridges and together they resided in the Rock Creek/Waco area until his death on June 6, 1943. Guy and Erma Lee had three daughters. Mrs. Bridges worked as a seamstress in various manufacturing companies for over 40 years and moved to Gatesville in February 1983. She was a loving mother and friend to many and lived life to its fullest. She was a faithful member of Eastwood Baptist Church of Gatesville.
Mrs. Bridges was preceded in death by her parents, Eddie and Mary Ellen Garrett; sisters, Dorothy Hall, Rosie Bridges, Nora Brown and Fannie Wheeler; brothers, Marvin Garrett and Jess Garrett; daughter, Jennifer Gale Krause; and grandson, Gary Lee Gatlin.
She leaves to treasure many wonderful memories, her children, Joyce Bridges Holt and husband Marvin of Gatesville, Jean Bridges Gatlin and husband Arlie of Euless, Janelle Bridges Guajardo and husband Adam of Pflugerville; a brother, Ed Roy Garrett of Waco; a sister-in-law, Ruby Garrett of Waco; six grandchildren, Kay Streed and husband Ryan, Dremond Holt and wife Brenda, Julie Gatlin, Suzanne Laird and husband Garland, Tommy Gatlin, Denise Schmalriede and husband Terry; 13 great-grandchildren; four great-great-grandchildren; nieces, Mary Lou and Joy Lynn; nephews, Buster, Ritchey, Dennis, Junior and Jerry; plus many dear friends.
Pallbearers were Ritchey Garrett, Dennis Garrett, Ed Roy Garrett Jr., Jerry Garrett, Allen Laine, Kevin Laine, Michael Scott and Curtis Lam.
Honorary pallbearers were Dremond Holt and Tommy Gatlin.
Ralph Bond
Ralph Bond, 82, of Fredericksburg, died Jan. 11, 2003 at his residence.
Funeral services were held Tuesday at the First United Methodist Church. The body was cremated.
Mr. Bond was born Dec. 29, 1920, in Gatesville to the late Inez Douglas Bond and Allen Bond. He served in the Pacific Theater with the U.S. Navy during World War II. He worked for many years in the construction business and at Pearl Brewery in San Antonio before retiring to Fredericksburg in 1991. He was preceded in death by two brothers, Victor and Robert; and a grandchild, Heather Little.
Survivors include his wife of 57 years, Helen Allerkamp Bond; daughters, Hazel Bond and Ann Little; brothers, Elmo Bond, Floyd Bond, and Elmo Bond; sister, Mattie Toups; four grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.
The family suggest donations be made to the building fund of the Fredericksburg United Methodist Church, Hill Country Memorial Health System Hospice Program or a charity of choice.
Bill Bannister
Bill Bannister of McGregor died Jan. 12, 2003 in McGregor. He was 61.
Funeral services were held Wednesday at College Avenue Baptist Church with the Rev. David Thompson and the Rev. Carroll Hambrick officiating. Interment was in Post Oak Cemetery near Oglesby.
Mr. Bannister was born Oct. 16, 1941, in Oglesby, the son of Johnny Ruth (Prewitt) Bannister and the late William Travis Bannister. He was reared in Oglesby and graduated in 1959 from Oglesby High School. He served in the U.S. Army from 1959 to 1965. He was a member of the Bryant Oliver American Legion Post in McGregor. On Jan. 7, 1989, he married Peggy Killgore in McGregor. He was a member of College Avenue Baptist Church. He was a heavy equipment operation for Lehigh Cement Plant for 24 years. He was also preceded in death by his stepfather, Victor Harper.
Survivors include his wife, Peggy Bannister of McGregor; mother, Johnny Bannister Harper of Oglesby; two sons, Brent Bannister of Hewitt and Kent Bannister of Gatesville; two stepsons, John David Hill of San Marcos and Scott Hill of McGregor; daughter, Blyth Dixon of Gatesville; stepdaughter, Shanalyn Hill of McGregor; two sisters, Kay Morgan of Oglesby and Brenda Haviland of Fort Worth; and 13 grandchildren.
