Brannon
Mark Dwain Brannon, 36, died Sunday, June 23, 2002.
A memorial service will be held at 10 a.m. Thursday at Treviño Funeral Home chapel. Burial will follow in Beeville Memorial Park.
Mr. Brannon was born on June 8, 1966 in Center to Willie Gene and Corrine (Hebert) Brannon. He was a surveyor with Darpy Surveying Co. of Victoria.
He was preceded in death by his father.
Mr. Brannon is survived by his mother, Corrine Brannon of Beeville; his daughter, Ashtin Brannon of Beeville; two sisters, Vicki (Jimmy) Rice and Gena Brannon (Larry Benavidez) of Beeville; and two brothers, Tony (Tammy) Brannon of Beeville and Brad (Missy) Brannon of Richmond.
Hernandez
Joe A. Hernandez, 68, a former Beeville resident, died Wednesday, June 19, 2002, in Houston.
A Mass for the Deceased will be celebrated at St. James Catholic Church in Refugio at 10 a.m. on Saturday.
Mr. Hernandez served in the U.S. Army from 1957 to 1960. He received an honorable discharge.
He is survived by his wife, Marlene P. Hernandez of Skidmore; two sons, Phillip and Steve Hernandez of Houston; one daughter, Laura Hernandez of Victoria; one granddaughter, Vanessa Almendarez of Victoria; three brothers, Oscar Hernandez of Lancaster, Calif., Ernest Contreras of Refugio and Henry Contreras Jr. of Portland; one sister, Tina Muñoz of Beeville; three step-daughters, Maria Serrano of Skidmore, Christie Williams of Houston and Myrna Frabasilio of Beeville.

Nance
Flora Rothwell Cox Nance, 91, of Victoria died Sunday, June 23, 2002.
A memorial service celebrating her life will be held Monday, July 1, at 3 p.m. at Colonial Funeral Home in Victoria, conducted by her son, Bob Nance, and the Rev. Bill Dugat Jr. of Kerrville, a family friend.
Mrs. Nance was born on Aug. 7, 1911 in Beeville to Robert L. and Minnie (Hays) Cox. A talented pianist, organist and poet, Mrs. Nance studied music at Kidd-Key College in Sherman. She was the organist/pianist at Beeville’s Rialto Theatre, First Presbyterian Church and Rotary Club. She worked at the Denver Hotel in Victoria and for Bill Barnes Jeweler.
She was married to F.D. “Fats” Nance for 23 years, until his death in 1954. Following his death, Mrs. Nance moved to Houston and worked for the Houston Jewelry Company for many years. Upon her retirement she moved to Victoria to be close to her son and his family.
She was an avid gardener and member of the Victoria African Violet Club. She enjoyed traveling, cooking, entertaining, reading and shopping for antiques. Her greatest joy was spending time with her three great-grandchildren, who called her “Nonnie.”
Mrs. Nance was preceded in death by her parents; her husband; her sisters, Alice Scott, Amelia Cox, Mary McTaggert and Lilla Mattefs; and her brothers, Alex, Thomas, Robert E.L., Atlee and Edwin Cox.
She is survived by her son and daughter-in-law, Bob and Olga Nance; two grandchildren and their spouses, Frank (Carol) Nance of Austin and Nancy (Mace) Bennett of Victoria; three great-grandchildren, Devon and Chase Bennett and Bailey Nance; four sisters, Dorothy Wallace of Friendswood, Alma Reilly of Mineral Wells, Frances Timlin of Goliad, and Lyla Olive of Aransas Pass; and many nephews, nieces and friends.

Perez
Barbarita G. Perez, 87, died Saturday, June 22, 2002, in a Corpus Christi hospital.
Visitation was held Monday at Angelus Funeral Home. A prayer service was held at 7 o’clock that evening at the same location. Funeral services were held Tuesday at 10 a.m. at Primera Iglesia Bautista with the Rev. Marcelo Garcia officiating. Burial followed in Evangelico Cemetery. Pallbearers were Henry, Isaac, Santos Jr. and Rudy Perez; Antonio Gomez Jr. and Michael Contreras.
Mrs. Perez was born on Dec. 4, 1914 to Bencelado and Josefa (Galindo) Garcia in Pettus. She married Demesio Perez on July 18, 1933 in Pettus. She was a resident of Beeville and a homemaker. She was a member of Primera Iglesia Bautista.
She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband (who died March 1966), a son, Nicolas Perez and one daughter, Dora Contreras.
Mrs. Perez is survived by her sons, Santos, Demesio Jr., Martin and Luis Perez, all of Beeville; one daughter, Balentina Gomez of Beeville; an honorary grandson, Adolfo DeRusse of Corpus Christi; 34 grandchildren; 79 great-grandchildren; 25 great-great-grandchildren and one sister, Dora Garcia of Beeville.

Stubbs
James Eugene Stubbs, 63, died suddenly on Thursday, June 20, 2002 in Dallas. He was married to the former Judy Neal of Beeville.
Memorial services were held at Sparkman Hillcrest Funeral Home in Dallas on Monday. Graveside services followed in Wortham.
Mr. Stubbs was born in Wortham on May 17, 1939. He was a graduate of Wortham High School, Texas A&M University and the University of Texas at Austin. He was active in the corps of cadets at A&M, where he majored in accounting, was elected senior yell leader, and graduated with honors.
He received his master’s of business administration degree from UT, then served in the U.S. Army as a commissioned officer. He entered the business world as an auditor and CPA with Arthur Young and Co., then joined Mary Kay Cosmetics, where he became executive vice president and chief financial officer. While at Mary Kay, Mr. Stubbs met and married Judy Neal. He was supportive of Mrs. Stubbs’s success as a Dallas businesswoman, her community service and philanthropy.
He also served as the chief financial officer of Computer Language Research and Michael’s. At the time of his death, he was an active private investor. In partnership with his cousin, Mr. Stubbs raised cattle on land near Wortham, which has been held in his family for more than a century.
Mr. Stubbs was preceded in death by his mother and father, Van Hook and Modene T. Stubbs.
In addition to his wife, Judy, he is survived by his cousins, John Stubbs and wife Mattie, Sara Stubbs Sims of Mexia, and Mitzi Parker and Jean Mitchell, both of Fort Worth; his sisters-in-law, Diana Loving and husband Don, Sarah Dunn and husband Allen L., and nephews Brett and Neal Dunn.
Memorial donations may be made to the South Texas Children’s Home.
Virata
Antonio Mercado Virata, 68, died Sunday, June 23, 2002.
Visitation was held Tuesday from 5 to 9 p.m. at Galloway and Sons Funeral Home chapel. Funeral services were held today (Wednesday) at 10 a.m. at the same location with Father Patrick Donohoe officiating. A private, family burial followed at Beeville Memorial Park. Pallbearers were Anthony, Michael and Cesar Pascual, Danny Madrigal, Clinton Bagwell and B.J. Johnson. Honorary pallbearers were Jose Marquez, Patus Prodigalidad, Bob Poblete and Abraham Ladesma.
Mr. Virata was born to Mariano and Consolacion (Mercado) Virata in Dana Negros, Occidental, Philippines on Sept. 20, 1933. He graduated from high school and attended two years of college. He married Vivian Jones in New Orleans, La. on Dec. 24, 1959. He served in the U.S. Navy for 23 years. Following his retirement as a chief petty officer, he was a federal civil service employee for 22 years. He was a member of St. Joseph’s Catholic Church.

Mr. Virata is survived by his wife of 43 years, Vivian Virata of Beeville; a daughter, Velina T. Virata of Beeville; two sons, Mariano Virata and wife Lois of Beeville and Raphael Virata and fianceé Michelle Fields of Sugar Land; one brother, Damian Mercado Virata of Cavite, Philippines; three sisters, Aida Mercado Virata of Manila, Philippines and Benefrida Mercado Virata and Minerva Mercado Virata, both of Cavite, Philippines; and two half brothers, Cesar Mercado Virata and Marcos Mercado Virata, both of Cavite, Philippines.

Abrigo
Jose Abrigo Sr., 81, of Roscoe died Sunday, July 14, 2002, at the Roscoe Health Care Center.
Funeral services were held Wednesday at 10 a.m. at McCoy Chapel of Memories with the Rev. Frankie Santiago officiating. Pallbearers were Felix Abrigo, Feliz Hernandez, Domingo Abrigo Jr., Larry Segura, Manuel Vasquez Jr. and Joe Vasquez. Honorary pallbearers were Salvador Granado and Trino Salazar.
Mr. Abrigo was born on March 19, 1921, in Beeville. He married Narsisa Moreno on Nov. 10, 1945, in Beeville. He was a farmer and a member of Roscoe Worship Center. He had lived in Roscoe and Loraine since 1955, and in Beeville before moving to Sweetwater.
He was preceded in death by two brothers, Trino and Tomas Abrigo, and three sisters, Susanna Salazar, Romana Lopez and Herminia Villalobos.
Survivors include his wife, Narsisa Abrigo of Roscoe; four sons, Simon Abrigo of Loraine, Ascension M. Abrigo of Kerrville and Joe Abrigo Jr. and Feliz Abrigo of Roscoe; three daughters, San Juanita Orozco, Herminia Garcia and Mary Lou Orozco, all of Roscoe; one brother, Domingo Abrigo of Refugio; three sisters, San Juana Hernandez and Juanita Garcia, both of Beeville, and Felicita Segura of Port Lavaca; 13 grandchildren; and 12 great-grandchildren.

Aguirre
Josie G. Aguirre, 62, of Mathis died Wednesday, July 17, 2002.
Rosary was recited Friday at 7 p.m. at the American Legion Hall in Mathis. Funeral Mass will be celebrated today (Saturday) at Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Mathis at 10 a.m. Burial will follow in Descanso Eterno Cemetery No. 2. Pallbearers will be Ricardo Villarreal, Alfonso Muñoz, Tommy, Miguel and Abel Aguirre and Johnny Joe Garcia.
Mrs. Aguirre was born on April 12, 1940, in Cotulla to Miguel and Isabel (Coronado) Gutierrez. She was a housewife and a Catholic.
She is survived by her four daughters, Elsa A. (Fernando) Balboa of Corpus Christi, Carla Zavala of Lubbock and Alma Rosa (Jose) Sandoval and Monica Aguirre, both of Mathis; three sons, Miguel, Pedro and Aldo (Angelica) Aguirre, all of Mathis; two brothers, Raul and Flavio Gutierrez, both of Mathis; 12 grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren.

Juan Manuel Gomez, 39, of Alvin died Friday, July 12, 2002, following a work-related accident.
He was born on Nov. 13, 1962, in Rio Grande City to Juan S. and Rita Gomez. He had resided in Alvin for one-and-a-half years and was a former Beeville resident. He was a pipe liner and employed by Troy Construction Pipeline. He was a member of St. John the Baptist Catholic Church.
He was preceded in death by his sister, Rosemary Gomez.
Mr. Gomez is survived by his wife, Maria Jesusa L. Gomez of Alvin; his parents, Juan S. and Rita Gomez of Alvin; his daughters, Candy Lee, Rosemary and Starlite Clarissa Gomez, all of Beeville; a stepdaughter, Christy Lopez of Alvin; two sisters, Baldormera Gomez and Becky Faith Montgomery, both of Alvin; a brother, Romeo Gomez of Baytown; and one grandson, Manuel Montoya II of Beeville.
Visitation was held Tuesday in the Scott Funeral Chapel. Rosary was held that evening. Funeral services were held at 10 a.m. Wednesday at St. John the Baptist with Rev. Deacon Bob Kacz officiating. Pallbearers were Romeo Gomez, Romeo Gomez Jr., Lupe Sambrano, Luis Gomez, Lodrigo Lopez, Jesse Montgomery and Angel R.A. Interment followed in Alvin’s Confederate Cemetery.

Perales
Daniel Perales, 71, died Thursday, July 11, 2002, at Veterans Hospital in Houston.
Funeral services were held Monday, July 15, at Advantage Funeral Home. Burial followed with military honors at Veterans Memorial Cemetery in Houston. Pallbearers were David B. Garza and Reyes W. Garcia, both of Beeville, Johnny Perales of Corpus Christi, and Pilar A. DeLeon, Raul Valdez and Encarnacion (Chon) Garcia, all of Houston.
Mr. Perales was born in Berclair to Calistro and Estella (Wilson) Perales on May 31, 1931. He resided in Houston, served in the U.S. Army and was a warehouseman.
He was preceded in death by his parents; his stepfather, Reyes Garcia, one brother, Juan Perales, and one niece, Sylvia DeLeon.
He is survived by two brothers, Reyes W. Garcia of Beeville and Encarnacion (Imelda) of Houston; four sisters, Carmen (David) Garza of Beeville, Juanita (Harold) Welch of Raytown, Mo., Consuelo (Pilar A.) DeLeon and Dolores (Raul) Valdez, both of Houston; 15 nieces and nephews; and 14 great-nieces and nephews.
