Elder
James Michael Elder of Marble Falls passed away Monday, Jan. 26, 2004, in San Antonio. He was born in Beeville to James A. and Nora Moring Elder on Oct. 26, 1948. He graduated from A.C. Jones High School and attended Bee County College while playing collegiate baseball. He graduated with a bachelor of science degree in agriculture from Southwest Texas State University in 1972.
Elder was a devoted employee of the Rural Electric Cooperatives of Texas for the last 26 years. He held positions at San Patricio Electric Cooperative in Sinton, Deep East Texas Electric Cooperative in San Augustine and most recently was a district manager for Pedernales Electric Cooperative in Johnson City.
He had a lifelong love for sports and the outdoors. He was an avid whitetail deer hunter.
Survivors include his wife, Kathryn A. Elder of Marble Falls; daughter, Lindsay Beth Elder of Houston; father, James A. Elder of Karnes City; sister, Vicki Hanus of Beeville; 10 nieces and nephews; eight great-nieces and great-nephews; and numerous other relatives and friends. He was preceded in death by his mother, Nora Moring Elder.
He was a member of the United Methodist church.
Visitation will be from 5 to 7 p.m. on Friday at Galloway and Sons Funeral Home in Beeville. Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday at Galloway and Sons Funeral Home. Interment will follow at Beeville Memorial Park Cemetery. Dr. Ralph Mann of Marble Falls will officiate the service.
Serving as pallbearers will be Jimmy Baird, Bobby Bauch, John Butts, Will Dahmann, Dan Fussell, Ronnie Gidley, Ray Stripling and Norrell Thomas. Honorary pallbearers will be Gene Collins, Benny Fuelberg, Cleo Hines, Jimmy Clyde Morris, Don Reed, Albert Lee Taylor and employees of the PEC Johnson City District.

Garcia
Maria Villarreal Garcia, 89, died Thursday, Jan. 22, 2004, in Christus Spohn Hospital Beeville.
Visitation was held Sunday from 5 to 9 p.m. at Galloway and Sons chapel. Graveside services were held Monday at 2 p.m. at Our Lady of Victory Cemetery No. 2.
Mrs. Garcia was born in Beeville on March 25, 1914, to Ramon and Paula (Garcia) Villarreal. She married Antonio G. Garcia on Oct. 3, 1946, in Beeville. She was a member of St. Joseph’s Catholic Church and a homemaker.
Survivors include her husband, Antonio G. Garcia of Beeville; a daughter, Elizabeth Garcia Standiferd of Beeville; a son, Tony V. Garcia of Corpus Christi; four grandchildren; three great-grandchildren; and a sister, Aurora V. Garcia of Beeville.

Garza
Pedro P. Garza, 84, died Monday, Jan. 26, 2004.
Visitation was held Tuesday from 5 to 9 p.m. at Galloway and Sons chapel, with a rosary at 7 o’clock that evening. Funeral Mass will be celebrated today (Wednesday) at 2 p.m. at St. James Catholic Church, with Father Balaswamy Pasala officiating. Burial will follow in Our Lady of Victory Cemetery No. 2.
Pallbearers will be Richard Aguirre, Simon Garza, Alex and Michael Carranco, Carlos Gonzales and Wally Rodriguez.
Mr. Garza was born in Goliad on March 5, 1919, to Pedro Sr. and Julia (Perez) Garza. He married Maria Louisa Garza on Nov. 8, 1948, in Beeville. He was a member of St. James Catholic Church and a mechanic. He was a veteran of World War II.
He was preceded in death by his wife, who died in 2001; a son, Pete Garza Jr.; his parents; two brothers, Enrique and Jose Garza; and two sisters, Jesusa and Lulia Garza.
Survivors include his sons, Steven (Judy D.) Garza and Lionel Garza, both of Beeville; two daughters, Soveida Garza (Johnnie Jr.) Hoffman of Chappell Hill and Sophia Garza (Gregory Banton) Nance of Virginia Beach, Va.; a brother, Marcelo Garza of Beeville; six grandchildren, Marcus and Leslie Longoria, J.R. Hoffmann, James Ryan and James Thomas Nance and Anthony Garza; six great-grandchildren, Randy Acosta, Jaycee and Calysta Longoria, Raymond Rodriguez and Randolph and Robert Gilbert.

Gerdes
Bob Gerdes, 77, a resident of Beeville for more than 12 years, died Friday, Jan. 23, 2004, in Christus Spohn Hospital Beeville, following a brief illness.
Mr. Gerdes was one of four children born to Blanche (Aldridge) and Hubert Charles Gerdes of Sinton on March 30, 1926. Survivors include his sister, Cathryn Gerdes Berninger of Beeville; a nephew, Dr. Dick Charles Gerdes of Santa Fe, N.M.; an aunt, Elizabeth Aldridge Plummer of Beaumont; five great-nieces of Canada; 11 first cousins; and many friends.
Following his graduation from Corpus Christi High School in 1943, Mr. Gerdes attended the University of Texas, where he received his bachelor of arts degree. Prior to his graduation he served a tour of duty in the U.S. Navy, in the V-12 unit, during which time he was stationed in Arlington and in Norman, Okla. After his graduation, he went to Honolulu, Hawaii, where he spent about five years in the employment of National Cash Register Co.
Upon returning to the U.S., his career was spent as an electronics engineer in California; “The House on the Rock” in Wisconsin; Hilton Head Island, S.C.; Pittsburgh; Florida; Oklahoma; and Chicago, Ill. His lifelong hobby was music, especially the electric organ. Prior to moving here in 1992, Mr. Gerdes was engaged in ranching activities on the family ranch in Atwood, Okla.
Mr. Gerdes attended St. Philip’s Episcopal Church in Beeville and was a member of St. Paul’s Episcopal Church in Holdenville, Okla. He was a member of the American Theatre Organ Society and the German-American Society of Tulsa, Okla., the Rialto Theater Preservation Association of Beeville and Beta Theta Pi fraternity.
The family received friends on Sunday from 5 to 7 p.m. at Galloway and Sons Funeral Home. Funeral services were held Monday at 11 a.m. at St. Philip’s, with the Rev. Adrian Amaya officiating. Interment followed that afternoon at 2 o’clock at Seaside Memorial Park in Corpus Christi.
Pallbearers were William B. Moser, Carter Arnold, Adrian Flores, Robert Dirks, James Brooke and Clay Rushing. Honorary pallbearers were Dan Hughes, Johnny Bond and Robert Hollingsworth.

Quimby
Michael Merlin Quimby, 52, died Monday, Jan. 26, 2004.
Visitation will be held Thursday from 5 to 8 p.m. at Galloway and Sons chapel. Funeral services will be held Friday at 2 p.m. at Galloway and Sons chapel, followed by burial in the Mineral Cemetery.
He was born in Wichita Falls on Jan. 1, 1952, to Dorothy Williamson and Merlin Zenus Quimby. A Beeville resident, he was a member of First Baptist Church and was a retail packing clerk. He also had worked as a carpenter and at the uranium mine in Ray Point.
Mr. Quimby is survived by his mother, Dorothy Gilmore of Beeville; a stepmother, Helen Quimby of West Springfield, Mass.; one sister, Stephany Liller and husband Harry of Waldorf, Md.; four brothers, Frederick Quimby of Beeville, Bobbie Quimby and Derek Quimby of Massachusetts and Steven Gilmore of Corpus Christi; several aunts, uncles, nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his father, Merlin “Bob” Quimby.

Smith
A memorial service will be set at a later date for Mabel Lehman Smith, who died Tuesday, Jan. 27, 2004.
She was born in DeWitt County on Dec. 8, 1915, to Ida Thamm and Gus Lehman. She married C.M. (Smitty) Smith in Cuero on June 30, 1934. They resided in Beeville and were members of First Baptist Church. She was a housewife.
She is survived by one son, Rex Smith of Beeville; two grandchildren, Kim Smith Kilen of San Antonio and Chad Smith of Beeville; and three great-grandchildren.

Cardenas
Adolfo C. Cardenas, 81, died Sunday, May 16, 2004, at his residence.
Visitation was held Monday from noon to 8 p.m. at Angelus Funeral Home, with a rosary at 7 p.m. Funeral Mass was celebrated Tuesday at 10 a.m. at Our Lady of Victory Catholic Church, with Father Richard Gonzales officiating. Burial followed at Beeville Memorial Park.
Pallbearers were Domingo V. Salinas Jr., Gerald Scott Salazar, David C. Salazar, Adan M. Salazar, Robert Aguilar Jr. and Fred Lira Jr. Honorary pallbearers were Ernesto Ramirez, Antonio Loya, Robert Aguilar Sr., Enrique Moreno Sr., Joe Villarreal, Serafin Quiroga and LeAnthony S. Salazar.
Mr. Cardenas was born in Devine on May 11, 1923, to Jesus and Simona Chacon. He served in the U.S. Army’s Third Infantry Division during World War II. He married Elvira Ramirez on April 1, 1950, in Bishop. He was a member of Our Lady of Victory. Mr. Cardenas was a retired civil service employee at NAS Chase Field. He was a millennium honor roll member of the National Rifle Association of America, an associate member of the Sheriff’s Association of Texas, and a life member of the Disabled Veterans Association.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Elvira Cardenas, who died on July 28, 1990, his brothers, Jesus Cardenas Jr. and Eloy Cardenas of San Antonio, and his parents.
Survivors include two daughters, Nora Salazar and husband Gerald and Veronica Morón and husband Frank, all of Beeville; a son, Adolfo (Butch) Cardenas of Corpus Christi; a companion, Sara Dominguez of Beeville; a brother, Santiago Cardenas and wife Rafelita of Bishop; three sisters, Juanita Dominguez and husband Carlos and Augustina Lira, all of Bishop, and Maria DeLeon of Kingsville; four grandchildren, David C. Salazar and wife Nancy of Houston, Graciela Mari Salinas and husband Domingo Jr. and Gerald Scott Salazar and wife Jennifer, all of Beeville, and Cerisa Cardenas of Tempe, Ariz.; and seven great-grandchildren, LeAnthony S. Salazar, Dru Salazar, Caleb Salazar, Joshua Rodriguez, Gabriel, Gabriela and Matthew Salinas.

Virginia Balladarez Garcia, 77, died Saturday, May 15, 2004, at Christus Spohn Hospital Beeville.
Graveside services took place Tuesday at 2 p.m. at Our Lady of Victory Cemetery No. 2.
Mrs. Garcia was born in Beeville on April 15, 1927, to Gregorio and Maria (Castillo) Balladarez. She had resided most of her life in Beeville. She was a housekeeper and a Catholic.
Survivors include her son, Raul Garcia Jr.; her grandson, Henry Garcia Garrett; and her ex-husband, Raul Garcia Sr., all of Beeville.
Gillem
Wilbur “Stan” Gillem, 80, died Saturday, May 15, 2004.
A memorial service will be held Thursday at 10 a.m. at Galloway and Sons chapel, with the Rev. Bill Duke officiating. Mr. Gillem will be cremated.
He was born in Piqua, Ohio, on Oct. 5, 1923, to John W. and Mary Francis (Green) Gillem. He was a corporal in the Army and received the decoration and citation American theater ribbon, good conduct ribbon and World War II victory medal. After retiring from the military, he was a radiology technician. He married Trudy Jo Beaupre on Dec. 24, 1981, in California. He was a Methodist.
Survivors include his wife, Trudy Gillem of Beeville; two daughters, Marilyn Taylor and Marcia Mays, both of New Jersey; three sisters, Aileene Gillem, Helen Robinson and Martha Davis; a niece, Sara Quimby, all of California; three stepsons, Jim Oxford of Sinton and Bob and David Oxford of California; four grandchildren; and several great-grandchildren.

Hale
Marjorie Jean Marshall Hale, 76, died Saturday, May 15, 2004.
Visitation was held Sunday from 3 to 9 p.m. at Galloway and Sons Funeral Home. Funeral services were held Monday at the same location at 10 a.m., with Lee Bevly officiating. Special music included “How Great Thou Art” and “Beyond the Sunset,” with organist Cyndi Bevly. Burial followed in Skidmore’s Evergreen Cemetery.
Pallbearers were Amador Ramirez, Bill Hartman, Jim Morgan, Rodger Porter, Leonard Stroman and Randy Walls. Honorary pallbearers were Jack and Allen Bohac.
Mrs. Hale was born on Dec. 30, 1927. She was a member of Skidmore First Baptist Church.
Survivors include her sons, Michael and Mitchell (Linda) Hale; and a grandson, Scott Hale, all of Skidmore.
