Smith
Mabel M. Smith, 88, died Tuesday, Jan. 27, 2004, in Beeville.
She was born in Arneckeville on Dec. 8, 1915, to Ida Thamm and Gus Lehman. She married Charles M. “Smitty” Smith in Cuero on June 30, 1938. They resided in Beeville and were members of First Baptist Church. She was a housewife.
She was preceded by her husband, C.M. “Smitty” Smith in 1984, her parents, and her sisters and brothers, Amelia Linke, Pearl Shannon, Edwin and Earl Lehman.
She is survived by one son, Rex Smith of Beeville; two grandchildren, Kim Smith Keelan of San Antonio and Chad Smith of Beeville; and three great-grandchildren.
A memorial service will be held at Beeville Memorial Park on Saturday, Feb. 7, at 1 p.m., with the Rev. Greg Traylor officiating.

Smith
Opallea L. Dial Smith, 68, died Monday, Jan. 26, 2004, in Corpus Christi.
Visitation was held Thursday from 6 to 9 p.m. at Galloway and Sons chapel. Funeral services were held Friday at 11 a.m. at the same location, with the Rev. Walter Gilbert officiating, assisted by Mark Spaniel. Special music was provided by vocalist Mark Spaniel. Burial followed in the Dial Family Cemetery.
Pallbearers were Todd and Brett Rowley, Justin Lentz, Micah Spaniel and Allen and Slade Dial.
Mrs. Smith was born in Bee County on March 21, 1935, to Joseph Wayman and Alleen (Fetters) Dial. She was a member of Bethel Assembly of God Church in Corpus Christi, where she resided. She was a retired bookkeeper. She was preceded in death by her father.
Survivors include her mother, Alleen Dial of Beeville; a daughter, Elaine Edwards of Corpus Christi; two sisters, Margie Rowley and husband James of Richmond and Ethel McConnell of Beeville; two brothers, Wayman Dial and wife Marilyn of Bay City and Jack W. Dial and wife Shirley of Beeville; and three grandchildren, Justin Lentz, Amanda Lentz and Natalie Edwards.

Wilburn
Dueward Virgil Wilburn, 72, died Wednesday, Jan. 28, 2004.
Visitation was to be held Friday from 2 to 9 p.m. at Galloway and Sons chapel. Funeral services will take place today (Saturday) at 2:30 p.m. at the same location, with the Rev. Bill Stockton officiating. Special music will be provided by organist and vocalist Doug Burton. Burial will follow at the Wilburn Ranch Cemetery in Live Oak County.
Pallbearers will be Alex Wilburn, Trey Leeton, T.J. Wilburn, Jess Hawthorne, David Winsauer and Glenn Myers.
Mr. Wilburn was born in Mont Belvieu on Nov. 12, 1931, to Jessie Luther and Clara (Fraser) Wilburn. He served as a sergeant in the Air Force Strategic Air Command in Korea. He married Beverly Jean Range in Live Oak County on Dec. 26, 1951. They resided in Live Oak County. He was a retired rancher and retired owner and operator of Purity Feed and Seed Company in Beeville. He was a reserve deputy in Live Oak County and a member of the Swinney Switch Fire Department. He was active in 4-H and Bee County horse shows. He was a member of the Church of Christ.
Survivors include his wife, Beverly Jean Wilburn of Swinney Switch; a daughter, Laurie Leeton and a son, Walter Wilburn, both of Live Oak County; three grandsons, Alex Wilburn of George West and T.J. Wilburn of Beeville and Trey Leeton of Live Oak County; a granddaughter, Leslie Leeton of Odem; his mother, Clara Mulfair of Baytown; his brother, Jess Wilburn of Baytown; and two sisters, Wanda Hawthorne of Cleveland and Beverly Kaack of Baytown.
Memorials may be made to the American Cancer Society.

Coronado
Julian Coronado, 41, of Houston died Friday, Sept. 10, 2004.
He is survived by his wife, Irenia G. Coronado; three daughters, Jackie, Christina and Gabriela Coronado; three sons, Julian Jr., Justin and Israel Coronado, all of Houston; seven brothers, Daniel, David, Joe and Flavio Coronado Jr. of Mathis, Lucio Coronado of Springtown, Miguel Coronado of Houston and Jesse Coronado of Fort Worth; five sisters, Maria Coronado and Frances Gutierrez of Houston, Benita Paiz, Aurora Medina and Sulema Garza, all of Mathis; and numerous cousins, aunts and uncles.
The family received friends on Sunday from 2 to 9 p.m. at Treviño Funeral Home in Mathis, with a rosary that evening at 7 o’clock. Funeral Mass was celebrated at St. Frances Zavier Church in Tynan on Monday. Burial followed at Descanso Eterno II Cemetery in Mathis.
Arrangements were handled through Treviño Funeral Home, Mathis.
Franklin
The Rev. James B. Franklin, 76, died Sunday, Sept. 12, 2004.
Visitation was held Monday from 5 to 8 p.m. at Galloway and Sons chapel. Funeral services were held Tuesday at 3 p.m. at First Baptist Church with the Revs. Bailey Stone, Leon Aduddell and Greg Traylor officiating. Burial followed in Glenwood Cemetery.
Pallbearers were Gentry and Kevin Wesson, Ryan and Don Bebee and Britt and Tommy Dulin. Honorary pallbearer was Sylas Politte.
Rev. Franklin was born in Fort Worth on Jan. 20, 1928, to Barnard and Margaret (Wilkerson) Franklin. He held a master’s degree in religious education and served in the National Guard. He married Alice Wesson on Dec. 26, 1949, in Beeville. He was a member of First Baptist Church.
Rev. Franklin was a retired Baptist minister who had served at First Baptist Church in Kingsland, and ministered at First Baptist Church in Edna and Mathis as well as other Texas communities. He had served as vice president for development at Howard Payne University.
Survivors include his wife, Alice Wesson Franklin of Beeville; three daughters, Gayle Dulin and husband Tommy of Harlingen, Debbie Bebee and husband Don of San Angelo and Lisa Franklin of Silver Spring, Md.; four grandchildren, Shea Politte, Ryan and Cara Bebee and Britt Dulin; one great-grandson, Jacob Ryan Politte; and numerous nieces and nephews.

Gonzales
Jose Manuel Gonzales, 91, a resident of Beeville and Mathis, died Tuesday, Sept. 14, 2004, at Hillside Lodge Nursing Home in Beeville.
He was born in Lagarto on June 7, 1913, to Camilo and Cecilia (Martinez) Gonzales. He was preceded in death by his wife, Candelaria Torres Gonzales, and his parents. He was a migrant worker.
Survivors include his daughters, Santos Cantu of Odessa and Viola Gonzales of Sinton; a son, Manuel Gonzales Jr. of Beeville; two sisters, Virginia Zamora of Garland and Tomasa Barajas of Sandia; three brothers, Camilio Gonzales of Caddo Mill, Santiago Gonzales of Dallas and Agapito Gonzales of Wichita Falls.
Rosary will be recited tonight (Wednesday) at Treviño Funeral Home chapel. Funeral Mass will be celebrated at 2 p.m. Thursday at Our Lady of Victory Catholic Church with Father Richard Gonzales officiating. Burial will follow in Descanso Eterno Cemetery No. 2 in Mathis.
Vernon
Vera Vernon, 99, of Lamesa died Saturday, Sept. 11, 2004, at Sage Health Center in Lamesa.
Funeral services were held Monday at 11 a.m. at First Baptist Church of Lamesa. Burial followed at 4 p.m. at Cedar Hill Cemetery in Abilene. Services were conducted by Joe Vernon.
Born March 20, 1905, in Erath County, Mrs. Vernon moved with her family to Abilene in 1921 and graduated from Abilene High School in 1923. She attended Simmons College there for two years, then taught in several rural schools. She married W.M. Vernon on Aug. 16, 1927, in Abilene. They lived in Petersburg, Brownfield and Abilene, where he died on June 2, 1980.
Survivors include a son, Joe Vernon of Beeville; two daughters, Ruth Scarborough of Lamesa and Hazel Zorns of Lubbock; eight grandchildren; 14 great-grandchildren; and five step-great-grandchildren.
Arrangements were handled through Branon Funeral Home, Lamesa.
Bowes
Dorothy Camille Guzzardo Bowes, 85, died Saturday, June 22, 2002.
Visitation will be today (Saturday) from 1 to 2 p.m. at East Side Baptist Church in New Braunfels. Funeral services will begin at 2 p.m. with the Rev. Wilburn Taylor and the Rev. Moultie Ervin officiating. Burial followed in Bee County’s Mineral Cemetery. Pallbearers are Charles Maley, Charles Bowes, Christopher Bowes, Larry Hoch Sr., Mark Cave, Frederick Shumate, Ross Shumate, Wesley Mathes, Andrew Mathes and John Schultz III.
Mrs. Bowes was born on March 27, 1917 in San Antonio. She graduated from the “old” Brackenridge High School in 1934. She was active in many student organizations, serving in 1993-34 as president of the Purple Jackets, a girls’ drill team.
While a student at Moody Bible Institute in Chicago, Ill., she met her future husband, Charles Bowes. During their years together, the couple served the Lord together in various churches. After moving to Texas they served in Pearsall, Wrightsboro, Flatonia, Schulenburg, Stockdale, Beeville, Martindale, Harwood, McQueeney and New Braunfels.
When the Bowes’s youngest child, Candace, was four, Mrs. Bowes began attending San Antonio College, then transferred to Southwest Texas State Teachers College. After graduating with honors, she taught math at Floresville, Robstown, Beeville, Luling and San Marcos.
In 1963 she completed her master’s degree in counseling at the University of Texas. She was a high school counselor at Johnson City and Blanco, and for 15 years, at Del Valle High School. She retired from counseling in 1985, but continued pursuing formal learning throughout her life.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Pastor Charles F. Bowes, on Nov. 5, 2000.
She is survived by her six children, Martha Maley of Beeville, Timothy Bowes of Katy, Ruth Ann Hoch of Corpus Christi, Joy Cave of Chico, Lois Shumate of Corpus Christi, and Candace Mathes of Tokyo, Japan; 15 grandchildren, Charles and Amy Maley, Charles, Christopher and Melody Bowes, Larry Hoch Sr. and Lailani DeHart, Caryn Snyder, Mark and Elizabeth Cave, Frederick, Ross and Sara Shumate, and Wesley and Andrew Mathes; three great-grandchildren, Larry Hoch Jr., Matthew Maley and BreAnna DeHart; one sister, Lucille Ervin; and numerous nieces and nephews.

Mireles
Juanita Mendez Mireles, 73, died Tuesday, June 25, 2002, in a Beeville nursing home after a long illness.
Rosary was recited at 7 p.m. Friday at Walker-Mora Funeral Home chapel in Alice. Funeral Mass will be celebrated today (Saturday) at Our Lady of Guadalupe Catholic Church in Alice, with burial to follow at New Collins Cemetery.
Mrs. Mireles was born in Alfred and lived in Alice until 1960, when she moved to Beeville with her husband, Edmundo Mireles Sr. Mrs. Mireles was a former employee of the Beeville Independent School District.
Her husband preceded her in death in 1983. Also preceding her in death were her parents, Feliciano and Timotia Mendez.
She is survived by two daughters, Lamar M. Gest of Corpus Christi and Teresa “Terry” M. McNally of Philadelphia, Penn.; two sons, Edmundo Mireles Jr. of Washington, D.C. and Mario Mireles of Skidmore; four sisters, Maria McGraw, Maria Refugia Paiz, Betty Mendez Moen and Lucia Galvan; and two brothers, Trini Mendez and Feliciano Mendez Jr.

Pennington
Clara Lee Henderson Pennington, 87, died Thursday, June 27, 2002.
Visitation was held Friday from 6 to 8 p.m. at Galloway Funeral Home chapel. Graveside services will take place today (Saturday) at 10 a.m. at Beeville Memorial Park with Pastor Leo Oliver officiating.
Mrs. Pennington was born in Oklahoma on Jan. 3, 1915. She was married to Sam H. Pennington and resided in Tuleta. She was a nurses aide at the local hospital for 15 years. She was a member of the Baptist church.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Sam H. Pennington, and two sons, Billy Earl and Jack Lloyd Pennington.
Mrs. Pennington is survived by her daughter, Joan Bosworth and husband Kenneth of Odem; one daughter-in-law, Elaine Pennington of Hobbs, N.M.; six grandchildren, Sammy, Ervin and Michael Earl Pennington of Hobbs, N.M., Angie Pebsworth of Lovington, N.M., and Rebecca Rackley and Leigh Ann Ray of Odem; 10 great-grandchildren and many adopted children and grandchildren and friends from Tuleta.
