Davis
Lester “Dusty” Davis, 85, died Tuesday, Oct. 28, 2003, at Live Oak Nursing Center in George West.
Visitation will be held Thursday from 6 to 8 p.m. at Galloway and Sons Funeral Home chapel in George West. Funeral services will take place Friday at 10 a.m. at First Baptist Church in George West with the Rev. Bruce Irving officiating. Burial will follow in George West Cemetery.
Mr. Davis was born on June 8, 1918, to William Thomas and Carrie Etta (Lewis) Davis in Fort Cobb, Okla. He served in the U.S. Army during World War II. He married Lotana Faye Berna in 1936 in Raymondville. He resided in George West, where he was a retired stock contractor and rodeo producer. He was a member of First Baptist Church.
He was preceded in death by three brothers, Emmett, Wesley and Fred Davis, and two sisters, Irene King and Mary Webb.
Survivors include his wife, Lotana Faye Davis; three sons, Doyle Davis and wife Francis, Robert Davis and wife Nancy and L.T. Davis and wife Martha, and a daughter, Mary Etta Sammons and husband Butch, all of George West; eight grandchildren, 16 great-grandchildren; and one great-great-granddaughter.

Grimes
Charline Hazel Gregory Grimes, 97, of Austin died Friday, Oct. 24, 2003.
She was born on March 5, 1906, in Beeville to Charles Hardy Gregory and Mollie Cannon Keller Gregory, a pioneer family.
She lived in Dallas with her first husband, Clarence Wurzlow. When he died in 1966, she returned to Austin and married Frank C. Grimes. They lived in Clifton until his death in 1992. Mrs. Grimes returned to Austin and has lived there until her death.
She was a longtime member of University United Methodist Church and sang in the choir there and at St. David’s Episcopal Church under director Lester Bernizer.
She was preceded in death by 13 brothers and sisters and her parents. Survivors include the following nieces and nephews, Russell Gregory and wife Kay, Mollie Tower and Dr. Charles Gregory, all of Austin, Peggy Brunner of San Marcos, Carolyn Gregory of Dripping Springs, Gordon Smith Jr. of Alice, Dr. Lloyd Gregory Jr. and Dr. Fred Gregory, both of Houston, Myrtle Huebner of Bay City, Mary Hawes of Atlanta, Ga.; 23 great-nieces and great-nephews; and 40 great-great-nieces and great-great-nephews.
Funeral services were held at 2 p.m. Tuesday at the University United Methodist Church. Burial will follow at Memorial Hill Park in Pflugerville.
Pallbearers will be Lyn Brunner, John Hurst, Nathan Hurst, J.K. Leonard, Rusty Gregory and Bobby Tannert.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests memorials be sent to the University United Methodist Church Music Fund, 2409 Guadalupe, Austin, TX 78705.
Arrangements were handled through Weed-Corley-Fish Funeral Home, Austin.
Homeyer
Mary V. Homeyer, 66, of Seguin died Sunday, Oct. 26, 2003, in a San Antonio hospital.
Family received friends at Eckols Funeral chapel in Kenedy on Monday from 5 to 7 p.m. Funeral services were held at 1 p.m. Tuesday at the same location, with the Rev. Randy Rankin officiating. Burial followed in the Pilgrim Cemetery near Smiley.
Pallbearers were Tilm and Ty Homeyer, Jack and Craig Schulze, David Homeyer, Robert Malaer and Shane Justus.
Mrs. Homeyer was born on July 28, 1937, in Pilgrim to Albert and Mattie Frederick Baker. She married Joseph Homeyer on June 19, 1955, in Kenedy. She was a registered nurse and a member of Trinity Baptist Church. She had resided in Seguin for the past three years, and had also lived in Austin and Karnes City. She was a Sunday school teacher and a caregiver in the health care industry and at the South Texas Children’s Home.
She was preceded in death by her parents.
Survivors include her husband, Joseph Homeyer of Seguin; two daughters, Frances (Bob) McDonald of Portland and Bryna (Jack) Schulze of Austin; two sons, Tilm (Carol) Homeyer of San Antonio and Ty (Jennifer) Homeyer of Seguin; a sister, Shirley (Louis) Malaer of Pettus; a brother, Albert Baker of Austin; six grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.
Memorial contributions may be made to the South Texas Children’s Home, Pilgrim Cemetery and Marbridge Ranch.

Hunter
Lawrence DeMouche “Laurie” Hunter, 89, died Tuesday, Oct. 28, 2003, at his residence.
Visitation will be held today (Wednesday) from 5 to 9 p.m. and all day Thursday at Galloway Funeral Home chapel. Funeral services will be held Friday at 2 p.m. at St. Philip’s Episcopal Church. Burial will follow in the Hunter Ranch Cemetery.
Mr. Hunter was born on Feb. 7, 1914, to Darius Crayton “D.C.” and Adeline Patty (DeMouche) Hunter. He married Dorothy Talbert on Dec. 30, 1941, in Alice. After her death, he married Kathleen Waldie McCarty on Oct. 15, 1982, in Houston.
Mr. Hunter was a rancher, real estate broker and a former distributor for Mobil Oil Company. He was a past director of the Commercial National Bank, First Federal Savings and Loan Association and San Patricio Electric Cooperative. He was a board member of the Bee County Development Corporation, Beeville Memorial Hospital and Bee County Chamber of Commerce. He served as president of the Chamber of Commerce and the Navy League. He was a founder and host of the Old-Fashioned Men’s Ranch Barbecue. Mr. Hunter was a member of St. Philip’s and served on the vestry.
He was preceded in death by his parents, his first wife, Dorothy Hunter, and two brothers, Pete and Bobby Hunter.
Survivors include his wife, Kathleen Hunter of Beeville; a daughter, Mary Lou Vielock of San Antonio; three sons, Larry Talbert Hunter of Edinburg, Darius Crayton Hunter of Alice and John F. Hunter of Beeville; a stepdaughter, Claudia Roeser of Houston; nine grandchildren, Hunter and Wade Vielock, Judibeth, Robin, Hillary, Brooke, John Wesley and Lawrence Crayton Hunter, and Kelly Hunter; three stepgrandchildren, Meredith and Elizabeth Riddle and Emily Roeser Wehring; and two great-grandchildren, Sol and Ave Hunter.

Rayburn
Dr. John C. Rayburn, 91, died Friday, Oct. 24, 2003.
Dr. Rayburn was born Oct. 6, 1912, in Bell Buckle, Tenn., to the Rev. James and Annie Smartt Rayburn. He married Virginia Kemp on June 23, 1949, in the First Methodist Church in Beeville. He was active in the U.S. Navy during World War II. His military service was spent in Washington, D.C., New York City, Boston, Aruba and Japan before retiring as a lieutenant commander.
Dr. Rayburn was a lifetime educator. He studied at Trinity University, when the campus was located in Waxahachie, at Texas Tech University for his B.A. degree and received both the M.A. and Ph.D. degrees from the University of Chicago. His studies included additional work at the University of Texas-Austin. He was the author of numerous articles in professional history journals. He was a Fellow of the Texas State Historical Association. He taught in public schools in Slaton, Edinburg, at Texas Woman’s University and Texas A&I University (now A&M-Kingsville) where he retired as dean of the College of Graduate Studies and professor of history. Later, he was named professor emeritus. After moving to Kerrville in 1987, he tutored at Schreiner University.
He and his wife, Virginia, edited “Century of Conflict,” a book of primary source material about incidents in the lives of early South Texas settlers in the area around Brownsville. Also, he wrote the introduction to “ Texas in 1850,” a book by author Melinda Rankin.
Dr. Rayburn was a longtime member and elder of the Presbyterian Church. He is survived by his wife, Virginia, of Kerrville; daughter Nancy Smith and husband Lawrence Ray Smith of Kerrville; granddaughter Lauren Smith of Abilene; one brother, Robert W. Rayburn and wife Susan of Charlotte, N.C., sister-in-law Chrystine Rayburn of Houston; three nephews and three nieces. He was preceded in death by one brother, Madison Rayburn.
Graveside services were held at Glenwood Cemetery, Beeville, on Monday at 2 p.m.
Funeral arrangements were entrusted to Grimes Funeral Chapels of Kerrville.
Rivas
Gloria Garcia Rivas, 53, died Saturday, Oct. 25, 2003, in Corpus Christi.
Funeral services will be held at 3 p.m. today (Wednesday) at Treviño Funeral Home chapel. Special music will include “One Day at a Time” and “Just a Closer Walk With Thee.” Burial will follow in Beeville Memorial Park.
Pallbearers will be Troy Gentry Hernandez, Jason Edmund Hernandez, Michael Cantu, John Rivas, Ray Rene Rivas and Michael Ray Bieber. An honorary pallbearer will be Roxanne Soliz.
Ms. Rivas was born on Feb. 14, 1950, in Refugio to Mike and Anita (Camacho) Rivas. She resided in Corpus Christi and was a nurse’s aide at Doctors Regional Hospital. She was a former resident of Beeville. She belonged to Faith Family Church, the Bible Ministry and 700 Club.
She was preceded in death by her sister, Mary Ann Soliz, and a brother, Miguel Rivas Jr.
Survivors include her sons, Carlos Anthony Rivas and Henry Michael Garza, both of Beeville, and Shawn Matthews Garza of Victoria; four grandchildren, Shawn C. Johnson, Erika J. Garza, Caitlynn N. Garza and Cameron Miguel Rivas; her parents, Mike and Anita Camacho Rivas; a sister, Mary Lou Castillo, and a brother, Guadalupe “Wally” Rivas, all of Beeville.

William “PeeWee” Ross, 74, died Saturday, Oct. 25, 2003.
Visitation was held Monday from 2 to 6 p.m. at Galloway and Sons Funeral Home chapel. Mr. Ross was cremated and his ashes will be released over the waters of Lake Corpus Christi at Swinney Switch, as per his wishes.
Mr. Ross was born on March 22, 1929, in Yoakum to Robert Clawson and Aleene Elizabeth (Gibson) Ross. He married Irene Stewart on Feb. 28, 1949, in Beeville. He was a tool pusher in the oil field. He was a Baptist and enjoyed fishing.
He was preceded in death by his parents, a sister, Alma Wren, a brother, Norman E. Ross, and a grandson, Ross Alden.
Survivors include Irene Stewart Ross of Beeville; six children, Linda Mullins and husband Lloyd of Aransas Pass, Sharon Turner and husband Benny of Cedar Park, Richard Ross and wife Kathleen of Victoria, Randall Ross and wife Susan of Columbus, Cindy Ross of Beeville, and Brenda Davis and husband John of Snyder; 15 grandchildren, Lane and Larissa of Aransas Pass, Preston and Stewart of Cedar Park, Cody of Victoria, Travis, Holly, Timothy and Tyler of Columbus, Anson, Samantha, Michael and Angel of Beeville, and Elizabeth and William of Snyder; four brothers, Denver T. Salinas
Hortencia Salinas, 86, died Saturday, Oct. 25, 2003, at Hillside Nursing Home in Beeville.
Rosary was recited Tuesday at Treviño Funeral Home chapel at 7 p.m. Funeral Mass was celebrated today (Wednesday) at 10 a.m. at Immaculate Conception Catholic Church in Skidmore, with Father Paul Rajareegam officiating. Burial followed in Skidmore’s Evergreen Cemetery.
Pallbearers were Anthony Reyes, Gerald Salinas, Roman Muñoz, Rene Salinas Jr., Joshua Salinas and Jerime Garcia. Honorary pallbearers were Alfred and Joey Salinas.
Mrs. Salinas was born on Nov. 19, 1916, in Skidmore to Abundio Hernandez and Juanita Castaneda. She resided in Skidmore and was a housewife. She was a member of the Catholic church.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Ricardo C. Salinas, who died in 1991.
Survivors include four daughters, Lusbina Reyes of Victoria, Yolanda (Robert) Chabot of San Antonio, Wilma (Richard) De La Garza of Houston and Casilda (Norberto) Muñoz of Clareville; 10 sons, Alex (Barbara) Salinas of Austin, Richard (Carmen) Salinas, Rolando (Mariann) Salinas, Edward (Viola) Salinas and Richard (Gloria) Salinas Jr., all of Houston, John (Stephanie) Salinas and Alfred (Mary) Salinas, both of Beeville, Ruben (Eloisa) Salinas and Rene Salinas, both of Skidmore, and Joe Salinas of San Antonio; a sister, Herlinda Hernandez of Falfurrias; a sister-in-law, Margarita Salinas of Seguin; 26 grandchildren; and 20 great-grandchildren.

Donald W. Taylor, 89, of San Antonio died Sunday, Oct. 26, 2003.
Visitation will be held tonight (Wednesday) from 5 to 7 o’clock at Mission Park Funeral Chapels North in San Antonio. Services will be held at 10 a.m. Thursday at St. Luke Lutheran Church with interment to follow at San Fernando Cemetery III.
He was preceded in death by his daughter, Elaine Frakes. He is survived by his wife, Addie L. Taylor; a daughter, Kathleen Clark; a son, Donald R. Taylor of Beeville; five grandchildren; and six great-grandchildren.
