He was born on May 4, 1915, in Milam County, Texas to Dr. G.S. Miller and Lela Memfee Miller. He moved to Live Oak County in 1918 with his parents. He went to Westmoreland (now Trinity) College in San Antonio and A&I College in Kingsville.
John played professional baseball from 1937 to 1954 as a pitcher. The name “Ox” was earned when he pitched a double-header one Sunday afternoon and won both games. Later he played for and managed semi-pro teams in Victoria, Sinton, and Laredo. He worked with the South Texas All-Stars of San Antonio. They held try-out baseball camps and helped many boys get scholarships for college. He also worked with the Babe Ruth baseball teams in local towns and his teams won state and district championships most years and went to the World Series six times.
John was a rural mail carrier for 34 years in George West until his retirement in 1980. He continued to stay busiy with baseball and his former ball players, many of whom had gone to college on baseball scholarships. Some played professional baseball. As he grew older, he enjoyed attending local girls’ and boys’ sporting events.
He is survived by his wife of 67 years, Opal Holleman Miller, who has always been his biggest supporter. Since they had no children, John and Opal embraced the young people on his ball teams as their own.

Major Mitchell
Weldon R. “Mitch” Mitchell (Major, USMC, Ret.), 89, slipped the surly bounds of earth and touched the face of God on August 13, 2007.
Born in Prosper, Texas, on January 11, 1918, Mitch attended Garland High School where he lettered in Varsity Football all four years. After graduating high school, he held a variety of interesting jobs, everything from assisting the local country doctor to working the oil fields of Texas City. Eventually he found himself in a recruiting office of the United States Marine Corps.
He reported for duty in 1940 and retired in 1962 completing over 22 years of service. ‘The Major’ served in the Pacific theater during World War II, where he participated in the defense of Pearl Harbor on December 7, 1941. He was commissioned an officer and received his Naval Aviator wings in 1945. He then deployed to China as part of the United Nations Occupation Forces. With the outbreak of the Korean War in 1950, he was ordered to serve as a Forward Air Controller and later as an F4U Corsair pilot. His personal military decorations included the Marine Corps Good Conduct Medal, the Distinguished Flying Cross and three Strike Air Medals awarded for heroic action in combat.
This country fly boy found his dream girl on the pages of Variety Magazine and following a cowboy courtship he married the love of his life, Yasu, in 1947. Through their union he left his Mark and for that Matter his Britt, Tani and Cody.
Upon his military retirement, Mitch brought his family to Beeville. Here he became an academic instructor for Navy Marine aviators at NAS Chase Field. Although recognized for his handlebar mustache, he is most remembered for his enthusiasm for motocross racing and his love of ranching. But, for him, taking the dance floor with Yasu, and together watching his family grow to include many grandchildren and great grandchildren was his greatest joy.
As per his wishes, Major Mitchell’s wife, Yasu, and children, Pauline, Mark, Britt, Tani and Cody, invite friends and family to join them for a celebration of his life. It will be an outdoor Texas style send off complete with Bar-B-Que, fond memories and the sharing of tall tales.
