Katherine Gordon Murphy
Katherine Gordon Murphy died on June 20, 2007, following a brief illness. She was born on July 1, 1910 on her father’s ranch southwest of Gatesville, Texas at Slater Community on the Cowhouse Creek.
Services were held at St. Mark’s Episcopal Cathedral at 11:00 a.m. on Saturday, June 23rd with The Very Reverend M. L. Agnew Jr. officiating. Burial followed at Forest Park Cemetery.
Kay was the daughter of Leo Boone Gordon and Clara Brown Gordon. She graduated from Gatesville High School at the age of 14, and received a Bachelor of Arts degree in Education from Baylor University in Waco, Texas. Following graduation from Baylor, she taught school in Gatesville. In April 1938, she married John Roberts Murphy of Mansfield, Louisiana, whom she had met at Baylor, and moved to Shreveport, Louisiana.
John and Kay were extremely active members of St. Mark’s Episcopal Cathedral. An avid reader, Kay was one of the founding forces behind the St. Mark’s Episcopal Cathedral Library and was, with the help of many friends, the volunteer head librarian for approximately 40 years.
In her first years in Shreveport, Kay was President of the Board of both the Traveler’s Aide and Toy Loan. She served as Holiday in Dixie Court Chairman in 1967. She was also active in the Demoiselle Club, The Shreveport Club, Shreveport Country Club, and the English Speaking Union.
Kay was preceded in death by her husband, John Roberts Murphy; her son, John Gordon Murphy; and her sister, Camille Gordon Roberts, of Victoria, Texas. She leaves behind one daughter, Camille Murphy-Self, of Houston, Texas and son-in-law, Freeman Self; her daughter-in-law, Kay Burford Murphy; granddaughter, Gayle Murphy Schnell; grandson, Dean Roberts Murphy and wife, Lisa; and three adorable great-grandchildren, Nicki Schnell, Gordon Murphy and T. J. Murphy, all of Texas. She is also survived by nieces and nephews, Sue Welch and husband, Jack, of Houston, originally from Mansfield, Eric Pierson of Mansfield and Panama, Catherine Ann McHaney and husband, James, and John Morris Roberts and wife, Donna, all of Victoria, Texas.
Pallbearers were John Madison, Stewart Madison, James Madison, Charles Rodman, Dean Roberts Murphy and Scott Roberts McHaney. Honorary pallbearers were Marshall Martin, Don Weir, Ben Johnson and Walter Fair Johnson.
Besides her tenderness, keen sense of humor and quick wit, Kay was always a lady. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in her name to the St. Mark’s Episcopal Cathedral Library, 908 Rutherford Street, Shreveport, Louisiana 71104 or donor’s choice.
Vera McCarver
Mrs. Vera McCarver of Gatesville, departed this life Friday, June 22, 2007 at a local hospital. She had attained the ripe old age of 102.
Funeral services were held at 10 a.m. Monday, June 25 at the Gatesville Funeral Home Chapel with the Rev. Larry Williams officiating. She was laid to rest in the Gatesville City Cemetery beside her husband of sixty-two years.
A native and lifelong resident of Coryell County, Mrs. McCarver was born Vera Gladys Barton December 16, 1904, in the Mountain Community. She was the daughter of the late John William and Delilah Dossey Barton. She was reared and attended school in the Mountain Community. On June 3, 1923, she was married to Lee McCarver. They made their home in the Mountain and White Hall communities. She was a member of Eastwood Baptist Church. After her husband’s death in 1985, she made her home in Gatesville. In addition to her husband, she was preceded in death by her daughter and son-in-law Dorothy and Bob Williams; two sisters, Maudie Loer and Effie Hartis; and five brothers, Bus, Jack, Dossey, J.C. and Bill Barton.
She is survived by her daughter, Thelma Stobaugh and husband, Johnny of Gatesville; grandsons, Mike Williams and wife, Rheta and sons, Robert Neal and Brian of Cuero, David Williams and son, Tyler of Gatesville, Terry Williams and wife, Tonie and sons, Zachary, Zane and Zeth of Gatesville, Larry Williams and wife, Pam and daughter, Peyton and sons Kaleb and Bryn of Kerrville and Marsha Williams of Gatesville.
Ruby Brashear
Ruby Brashear, 89, of Salado, passed away on June 20, 2007 at a Temple hospital.
Funeral services were held Saturday, June 23, 2007 at 3:00 p.m. at Scott’s Funeral Home Chapel. Burial followed at Restland Cemetery. No visitation was scheduled.
Mrs. Brashear was born on January 13, 1918 in Austin, TX to the late Hiram and Rosie Penny Moody. She completed high school in Austin and moved to Coryell County where she met J.C. Brashear. They married on April 1, 1935 in Belton. She is a member of Grace Baptist Church in Salado. She was an avid quilter, loved to sew and work in her garden.
Ruby was preceded in death by her infant son, Billy Gene Brashear.
Ruby is survived by her husband of 72 years, J.C. Brashear of Salado; sister, Shirley Heath of Jal, NM; daughters, Glynda Gladding and husband, Nat of Washington, NC, Melba Kay and husband, Robert of Caldwell and Norene Frazier and husband, Billy of Salado; sons, Kenneth Brashear and wife, Letha of Red Lodge, Montana and Jim Brashear and wife, Dolores of Katy; 13 grandchildren; 28 great-grandchildren; and 16 great-great-grandchildren.

Ruth Floyd
Dorothy Ruth Floyd, age 82, of Gatesville, died Friday, June 22, 2007 at a local nursing home.
Funeral services were held at 2 p.m. Monday, June 25, 2007 at the Gatesville Funeral Home Chapel with the Rev. Shane Alexander officiating. Burial followed in the Restland Cemetery. The family received visitors from 6 to 8:00 p.m.Sunday at the funeral home.
Ruth was born on July 1, 1924 to the late B.E. and Veda Wicker Henderson. She grew up and went to school in Gatesville. She graduated from Gatesville High School in 1942. On September 12, 1942, she married H.P. Floyd and they resided in Gatesville all their married life. She worked in the school cafeteria in Gatesville as manager for 20 years, retiring in 1990. She enjoyed fishing, camping, working of crafts and traveling. She was a loving and devoted wife. She was a member of Gatesville Church of Christ. She was preceded in death by a brother, Perry Henderson and a grandson, Rajun Owen.
She is survived by her husband, H.P. Floyd of Gatesville; a chosen daughter, Shannon Lick of Gatesville; and a granddaughter, Kegan Owen.

Iris Rueter
Iris Rueter, age 95, of Gatesville, passed away Saturday, June 23, 2007 at a local nursing home.
Graveside services were held at 9:00 a.m. on Monday, at the Restland Cemetery. Memorial services were held at 11:00 a.m. at the First Presbyterian Church with the Rev. Dr. Jonathan Swanson officiating.
Mrs. Rueter was born March 19, 1912 to the late William Edward Britain and Laura Castleman Britain in Happy Holler, Osage, Texas. She married Edwin Rueter, 1934 and they lived in Coryell County all their married life. He preceded her in death in 1976. Iris attended college in North Texas State College in Denton, Texas where she received her teacher certification. She was a teacher at Osage School and the Texas Youth Council. She was a member of the First Presbyterian Church in Gatesville and Central Texas Presbytery-Spiritual Growth for the Woman of the Church. She was an elder in the church session, clerk of session, President of WOC, Sunday school teacher, choir member; she did extensive work on Coryell County Family History, a charter member of Coryell County Museum Foundation and also served on the board of directors from 1987 through 1990.
Mrs. Rueter is survived by sons, Joe Bob Rueter and wife, Frances of Gatesville, Jed Rueter of Gatesville, Mark Rueter and wife, Deborah of Garland; daughter, Nell Addkison and husband, Tom of Corpus Christi; grandchildren, Dale Rueter, Beverly Pena, Laurie Rueter Brown, Keith Rueter, Brad Rueter and Lindsey Rueter; five great-grandchildren; and one great-great-grandchild.
Memorials may be made to First Presbyterian Church or Vistacare Hospice.
Walteen Sellers
Walteen Sellers died Saturday, June 23, 2007. She was 92.
Funeral services were held Wednesday at OakCrest Funeral Home with the Rev. Carl Freeto officiating. Burial followed in the Chapel Hill Cemetery.
Mrs. Sellers was born Oct. 9, 1914 in Moran to the late Lonnie and Sallie Wood. When she was a young child, her family moved to the Hamilton area, where she lived for a number of years. She attended schools in the Aleman Community and in Hamilton. After high school, she worked as a beautician in Hamilton. She married J.F. Sellers on Sept. 21, 1935. They spent several years in Hamilton and Gatesville before moving to Waco. They made their home in Waco for over 50 years. She was a member of St. John’s United Methodist Church. She was preceded in death by her parents, a sister, a brother and her husband of 54 years.
Survivors include daughters, Monta Jean Sellers Conner of Valley Mills and Suzanne Sellers Bingham of Waco; two granddaughters; a sister, Maggie Davis of Hamilton; and a brother, Allen Wood of Ft. Worth.
Memorials may be made to Hillcrest Hospice, American Cancer Society or Quality Care of Waco.
Palmira Cisneros Banda
Palmira Cisneros Banda of Lorena died Sunday, July 15, 2007 at her home. She was 90.
Funeral services were held Wednesday at the Kathryn W. Green Chapel of Green-Patterson Funeral Home in Cameron with Johnny Skrhak officiaiting. Burial followed at the Hernandez Cemetery in Cameron.
Mrs. Banda was born Sept. 16, 1916 in Corpus Christi to Julian and Ricarda (Garcia) Cisneros.
Survivors include sons, Arturo Banda and Cecilio Banda, both of Bryan and Ramiro Banda, Refugio Banda and Santiago Banda, all of Waco and Juan Banda of Gatesville; daughters, Consuelo Martinez of Lorena, Esperanza Skrhak of Brownwood and Maria Tryon of Lorena; a sister, Manuela Cabrera of Corpus Christi; 19 grandchildren; 43 great-grandchildren; and six great-great-grandchildren.
Billy Joe Bone
Billy Joe Bone died Saturday, July 14, 2007 at his home. He was 74.
Graveside services were held Tuesday at Woodbury Cemetery in Hillsboro.
Mr. Bone was born Sept. 21, 1932 in Lorena to L.B. and Myrtle Hanna (Heath) Bone. He attended Lorena schools as a youth. On June 6, 1964, he married Laquita Rue Bone. They were married for 40 years until her death on Aug. 3, 2004. He attended Cottonwood Baptist Church in Cottonwood. He served in the U.S. Navy from 1950 to 1954 and served in the Korean War. He was preceded in death by his wife; parents; and a brother.
Survivors include a daughter, Donna R. Thorne of Lorena; sons, Burgess George Cole III of Austin and Tom Dee Cole of Wichita Falls; seven grandchildren; brothers, Glen of McGregor, Fred of Waco and Kenneth of Richardson; sisters, Betty Murdoch of Oglesby and Shirley Owens of Lake Livingston.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be sent to the American Legion Association #133 of Temple.
Mary “Julia” Martinez Hodges
Rosary for Mary “Julia” Martinez Hodges of Slaton was read Monday, July 16, 2007 at Our Lady of Guadalupe in Slaton. She was 66.
Funeral mass was held Monday at the church with Father Nicolas Rendon officiating. Burial followed at Englewood Cemetery.
Mrs. Hodges was born Jan. 28, 1941 in Fredricksburg to the late Norberto and Cayetana Martinez. She was a Guadalupana, member of the Brown Berets and a lifelong resident of Slaton. She was a homemaker and a Catholic. She was preceded in death by a son, Robert Hodges in 1978.
Survivors include sons, Kenneth Hodges and Ross Dan Hodges Sr., both of Slaton; daughters, Joann Munoz of Slaton, Patricia Lindsey of Amarillo, Natalie Hodges of Gatesville and Sonya Hodges of Lubbock; brothers, Lupe Martinez of San Antonio and Severo Martinez of Sacramento, CA; sisters, Anita Silva of Lubbock and Rosa Rocha of Slaton; 17 grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren.
W. B. “Dub” Maxwell
Mr. W.B. “Dub” Maxwell, age 88 of Gatesville, died Sunday, July 15, 2007 in Gatesville surrounded by his loving family.
Funeral services were held at 11:00 a.m. Wednesday, July 18th at the Gatesville Funeral Home chapel. Burial followed at the Davidson Cemetery. The family received visitors from 6-8:00 p.m. Tuesday, July 17th at the funeral home.
Mr. Maxwell was born on July 6th, 1919 in Coryell County to the late James S. and Essie B. Keener Maxwell. He attended schools in Blackfoot (near Davidson Cemetery) and Ft. Gates. He entered the Army on September 26, 1940 and was honorably discharged on September 12, 1945, serving in Rhineland, Ardennes and Central Europe. He received the EAME Campaign Medal with three Bronze Stars and the American Defense Service Medal. He married the former Merle Tennison on July 3, 1964. Mrs. Maxwell preceded him in death on July 23, 2004. Mr. Maxwell was also preceded in death by his parents, a grandson, Jason Lee Cathey; sisters, Inez Argabright, Annie Argabright and Nettie Daughtery; brothers, Steve Maxwell, Oliver Maxwell, Milton Maxwell and Ray Hodge.
Mr. Maxwell is survived by sons, Pete Lamb and Monte Maxwell of Gatesville; daughters, Kay Cathey and husband, Jeff of Duncanville, Janice Tatum and husband, Bobby of Waco, and Charlotte Allen and husband, Dale of Pidcoke; grandchildren, Chris Lamb, Shannon Lamb, Amy Veazey and husband Justin, Jeffrey Cathey, Byranda Tatum, Mykayla Tatum, Chase Floyd, Destany Blanchard and Cole Allen; great-grandchildren, Jason Cathey and Starley, Katie & Jamie Veazey; a sister, Isabelle Weems of Fort Worth; a brother, Clifford Maxwell and wife, Willie of Gatesville and a sister-in-law, Bill Maxwell of Gatesville.
