Bauer
Paul Bauer was a wonderful, loving person to everyone he knew. He was a man of integrity, a pillar of strength for his family, and a positive person, full of infinite amounts of humor to share. He was born November 19, 1909 in Kenedy Texas, the first child of Bessie and Fred Bauer. His father was from a long line of famous saddle makers. Paul worked in the saddle shop as a child and always was very handy with tools and woodworking. He and his Dad were the best of friends--great hunting and life buddies. During his early childhood, Paul's family lived in Goliad, Marenci AZ and El Paso before settling down in Beeville at the end of World War I.
Paul married Lillian Grace Schoppe on June 2, 1940. Their daughter and grandchildren fondly remember Paul saying he and Grace never went to sleep angry, always sharing that they loved each other very much — an inspiration to all of us. They had one child, Paulette, born December 8, 1946. The family was very active in St. Joseph's Catholic Church and Paul became a 4th Degree Knights of Columbus in the early 1960s. Paul and Grace also shared a love of history and worked together, gathering facts and photos for Grace's history of Bee County and other historical and family write-ups.
Besides being a wonderful and inspiring family person, he also was a very successful businessman. After graduating from A.C. Jones High School, he began a long business career, working mainly in business management for local schools and retail merchants; and working with various groups to help Beeville prosper. He enjoyed his real estate activities and was in land title business for a number of years before retirement in 1981. He continued to be very active in managing his own enterprises throughout his entire life.
Paul and Grace enjoyed spending their summers in Colorado with their daughter and grandchildren from 1981-1998. In fact, they literally helped to raise Paulette's girls — Maren Katherine and Erin Ann — both currently in California. Erin just entered the University of California at Santa Cruz and Maren, a recent Honor graduate from University of Colorado, is working in the San Franscisco Bay area.
Paul and Grace also enjoyed a large close Texas family and many good friends. Paul's special friend and neighbor for 30 years, Carl Ogle, continued to be his daily visitor during Paul's life at Hillside these past years. Both Paul and Grace moved to Hillside Lodge in March 1999. Grace died a year later. Both were very fortunate to have the wonderful care of Hillside staff.
Paul is remembered by everyone as a loving person, full of humor and kind words for all. To his many nieces and nephews, he was the very special Uncle Paul and to his daughter and grandchildren he was the wonderful Papa who could always be counted on for encouragement, love, wisdom and, of course, the good laugh.
Paul is survived by his daughter, Paulette Gwen Bauer Middleton Renné; her children Maren and Erin, and Paulette's husband, Dave Renné, and his children, Chris and Jeannie Renné. Paul's younger sister Bessie Mae and her husband John May live in Austin. Paul's other sister Gwen Cain died several years ago. His nieces and nephews include: Barbara Welder and Randy Cain of Beeville; Jan Smith, Austin; Beryl Mack, Houston; Candy Williams, Raymondville; Betsy Armstrong, New York City; Ben Bentrup, North Carolina; and Benne Walton, Kentucky.
The family welcomes stories about their Papa. Please send these to Paulette Middleton, 2385 Panorama Ave, Boulder CO 80304.
