Michael
Simon George Michael, 96, died Sunday, March 24, 2002, following a brief illness. Michael was an artist, teacher, philosopher, poet, collector and, as he would say, “always a student.”
Born May 3, 1905, in Houtzdale, Pa., he was preceded in death by his parents, the Rt. Rev. George N. and Rojina Michael; a brother, Issac; and a sister, Sadie.
With an interest in art that dated back to when he was 5, Michael went to Paris, France, as a 20-year-old and studied at the L’Academie de la Grande-Chaumiere-Des Beaux-Arts for three years.
During World War II, he was inducted and spent 41/2 years in service. At Camp Wolters, Texas, Tech. Sgt. Michael used his artistic skills to design actual-size models of German and Japanese villages which were used in training exercises. The work won him the Legion of Merit Medal. After being discharged, he returned to Texas to live.
He moved to Rockport in 1947 and bought property on King Street for a home and a gallery in 1950. From this base, he began teaching art in dozens of small towns in South Texas. Today, many people acknowledge Michael as the “godfather” of the arts movement in Texas.
He was a faculty member at Bee County College from 1968 to 1985. The college dedicated a wing of its Fine Arts Building to him in 1984.
Michael lived in a world whose vortex was art. His method of teaching could be divided into two broad areas: concrete instruction and philosophy — a sharing of his techniques and beliefs about life. The two together gave those who studied with him an experience that was unique.
Up until three weeks before his passing, he was working in his studio, offering encouragement and advice to artists who had come to paint with him.
He is survived by several nieces and nephews; several great-nieces and nephews; and Zona Chilcoat, who has been his business manager and primary care provider for the past 29 years.
Visitation was through today (Wednesday) at Charlie Marshall Funeral Home in Rockport. It will be followed by cremation. Plans for a memorial gathering will be announced later.
Memorial donations may be made to Coastal Bend College Art Scholarship Fund or to The Art Center of Corpus Christi, where his name will be inscribed on a stone wall of the center’s new wing currently under construction.
