MERILYN McALISTER
Merilyn F. McAlister, 85, of Texarkana, Texas, died Friday, Feb. 6, 2004, in a local hospital.
Mrs. McAlister was born Jan. 31, 1919, in Pine Bluff, Ark. She was retired from Red River Army Depot and a member of First Baptist Church, Moores Lane, where she was a member of the Sunshine Sunday School Class and served in the Intercessory Prayer Room.
Survivors include her husband, Ross B. McAlister Jr. of Texarkana; one son, Ross L. McAlister of Millwood, Ark.; one daughter and son - in - law, Debby and Toney Smith of Dresden, Tenn.; two sisters, Alma Pullen of Ashdown, Ark., and Mary Helen Rogers of Arlington, Texas; six grandsons; and 10 great - grandchildren.
Services will be 1 p.m. Tuesday at East Funeral Home, Moores Lane, Memorial Chapel with the Revs. Ron Kurtz and Larry Sims officiating. Burial will be in Rondo Cemetery.
Visitation will be 5 p.m. to 7 p.m. Monday at the funeral home.

LINDA THORPE
Linda Kay Thorpe, 52, of Maud, Texas, died Friday, Feb. 6, 2004, in a local hospital.
Mrs. Thorpe was born Aug. 3, 1951, in Red Bud, Ill. She was retired from Red River Army Depot and a Navy veteran.
Survivors include her husband, Thomas A Thorpe of Maud; three sons, Patrick Kelley, Timothy Kelley and Daniel Kelley; and two stepsons, James Allen Thorpe and Gordon Allen Thorpe.
Services will be 1 p.m. today at East Funeral Home, Moores Lane, Memorial Chapel with the Rev. Paul Beard officiating. Burial will be in East Memorial Gardens.
WALDENE BENNETT
MOUNT PLEASANT, Texas - Waldene Bennett, 83, of Mount Pleasant died Tuesday, Feb. 3, 2004, in Mount Pleasant.
Mrs. Bennett was born April 28, 1920, in Cason, Texas. She was a member of Mount Olive Baptist Church. She was preceded in death by her husband, Fred Bennett.
Survivors include one son, John Bennett of Mount Pleasant; one daughter and son - in - law, Rosemary and Elder Mack Jenkins Jr.; two sisters, Charlie Mae Wilson of Dallas and Bonnie Faye Allen of New York; four grandchildren, Billy J. Jenkins of Cannon Air Force Base, N.M., Adraine J. Jenkins of Fort Bragg, N.C., and Christopher J. Jenkins and Courtney J. Jenkins of Dallas; four great - grandchildren; and a number of other relatives.
Services will be 11 a.m. Wednesday at Mount Olive Baptist Church with the Rev. Kirthell Roberts officiating. Burial will be in Shady Grove Cemetery, Cason, under direction of Tumey Mortuary.
The body may be viewed from 10 a.m. to 7 p.m. Tuesday at the funeral home, with family visitation from 6 p.m. to 7 p.m.
JEWELL EDWARDS
Jewell S. Edwards, 89, of Hooks, Texas, died Friday, Feb. 6, 2004, in a local hospital.
Mr. Edwards was born July 4, 1914, in Leary, Texas. He was retired from Red River Army Depot and a member of Myrtle Springs Baptist Church. He was preceded in death by one son, Dale Edwards.
Survivors include his wife, Ruth Edwards of Hooks; one son and daughter - in - law, Dan and Linda Edwards of Macon, Ga.; one sister and brother - in - law, Mary Edwards Wilson and Dr. Edwin Dildy of Texarkana; two granddaughters, Emilie Edwards of Chapel Hill, N.C., and Katie Edwards of Atlanta, Ga.; one grandson and granddaughter - in - law, Chris and Dawn Edwards of Fort Worth, Texas; and a number of other relatives.
Services will be 10 a.m. Monday at Chapelwood Funeral Home Chapel with the Rev. Roy Ford officiating. Burial will be in Chapelwood Memorial Gardens.
The family will be at the Edwards home, 503 Precinct Road, Hooks.

NORA BROWN
NEW BOSTON, Texas - Nora F. Brown, 93, of New Boston died Saturday, Feb. 7, 2004, at her home.
Mrs. Brown was born Dec. 16, 1910, in Old Union community, Simms, Texas. She was a retired schoolteacher and a member of Temple Baptist Church, Order of the Eastern Star and the Retired Teachers Association. She was preceded in death by her husband, Tommy Brown, on Dec. 19, 1985.
Survivors include one sister, Lucille Phillips of New Boston; and a number of nieces and nephews.
Services will be 4 p.m. today at Bates - Rolf Funeral Home Chapel with the Rev. A.M. Adams officiating. Burial will be in Ringwood Cemetery.
Memorials may be made to Ringwood Cemetery Association or Temple Baptist Church, New Boston, Texas.
LETA SHELBY
Leta B. Shelby, 72, of Wake Village, Texas, died Sunday, Feb. 8, 2004, in a local nursing home.
Mrs. Shelby was born Aug. 20, 1931, in Collinsville, Texas. She was a homemaker and a member of Centre West Baptist Church and the Bible Study Fellowship. She was preceded in death by her husband, J.R. "Jimmie" Shelby Sr.
Survivors include one son and daughter - in - law, J.R. "Jimmie" Jr. and Sherry Shelby of Texarkana; two daughters and sons - in - law, Carla and Mike Pierce of Little Rock and Crystal and Bruce Gibson of Wake Village; two brothers, Herman Fulenwider of Texarkana and Donnie and Regina Fulenwider of Spring, Texas; two sisters - in - law, Mary Ruth Fulenwider of Texarkana and Betty Fulenwider of Whitewright, Texas; nine grandchildren; and eight great - grandchildren.
Services will be 1 p.m. Wednesday at Chapelwood Funeral Home with David Crumpton and Jared Gibson officiating. Burial will be in Chapelwood Memorial Gardens.
Visitation will be 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. today at the funeral home.
The family will be at the Shelby home in Wake Village.

BILL BACON
GILMER, Texas - Bill Bacon, 74, of Gilmer died Thursday, Feb. 5, 2004, in Gilmer.
Mr. Bacon was born May 11, 1929, in Boston. He was a machinist, past president of the Senior Citizens of Upshur County and Upshur County Republican Party and an Army veteran.
Survivors include his wife, Joy Bacon of Gilmer; three sons, David Bacon of Houston, Greg Land of Hooks, Texas, and Dwayne Land of Florida; three daughters, Donna Bacon of Colorado, Rachel Copeland of California and Phyllis Roberson of Nash, Texas; 26 grandchildren; and nine great - grandchildren.
Memorial services were Sunday at Gilmer Senior Citizens Center with Othel LaFerney officiating. Arrangements were under direction of Croley Funeral Home.
RUBY FULMER
Ruby J. Fulmer, 93, of Fort Worth, Texas, died Saturday, Feb. 7, 2004, in Kennedale, Texas.
Mrs. Fulmer was born Oct. 10, 1910, in Baton Rouge, La. She was a Baptist.
Survivors include one son and daughter - in - law, Jimmie E. and Beverly Fulmer of Fort Worth; three grandchildren; six great - grandchildren; and one great - great - grandchild.
Services will be 2 p.m. Wednesday at East Memorial Funeral Home, Moores Lane, with Robert Kurykendall officiating. Burial will be in Red Lick Cemetery, Red Lick, Texas.
Visitation will be 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. today at the funeral home.
WOODROW SMALL
Woodrow Lawrence Small, 91, of Texarkana, Texas, died Monday, Jan. 26, 2004, at his home.
Mr. Small was born April 1, 1912, in Atlanta, Texas. He was the retired owner of Small Construction Co. and attended Rose Hill Baptist Church.
Survivors include one daughter, Debbie Small; four nieces, Reta Luker of Baytown, Texas, Rhonda Dudley and Janice Pryor of Temple, Texas, and Laura Lucas of Queen City, Texas; two nephews, James Roberts of Austin and Bobby Small of Houston; and one special friend, Gladys Washington of Texarkana.
Arrangements are under direction of Texarkana Funeral Home.

THELMA GIDDENS
Thelma Giddens, 73, of DeKalb, Texas, died Sunday, Feb. 8, 2004, in a local hospital.
Mrs. Giddens was born July 25, 1930, in DeKalb. She was employed with Red River Army Depot and a member of St. Paul Baptist Church where she was a Sunday school teacher and a mission sister.
Survivors include her husband, Ray Gus Giddens Sr. of DeKalb; four sons, Ray G. Giddens Jr. of Tyler, Texas, Jerry G. Giddens and Jay C. Giddens of DeKalb and Tracy N. Giddens of Robstown, Texas; four daughters, Shirley Betts of New Boston, Texas, Rose Johnson of Tucson, Ariz., Vicki Cobbs of Phoenix and Tena Jamison of Newport News, Va.; her stepmother, Toni B. Collier of DeKalb; five brothers, Stevie Jones of Osceola, Ark., Bennie Jones of Phoenix, Vernon Jones and Johnny Jones of DeKalb and Stanley Jones of Oklahoma City; five sisters, Pearline Becom of Pasadena, Calif., Gracie Garrett of Morton, Texas, Willie Jean Neal of Collidge, Ariz., Alberta Ellis of Idabel, Okla., and Felecia Jones of DeKalb; 19 grandchildren; and seven great - grandchildren.
Services will be noon Friday at St. Paul Baptist Church, DeKalb, with Dr. Ross Cullins officiating. Burial will be in Beaver Dam Cemetery under direction of Haynes Mortuary.
