Henry Kubenka, 89, of Eola died Monday, Dec. 3, 2001.
Rosary service will be at 7 p.m. Tuesday, Dec. 4, in Johnson’s Funeral Home Chapel. Mass of Christian Burial will be at 10 a.m. Wednesday, Dec. 5, at St. Philip’s Catholic Church in Eola with Father Michael Rodriquez officiating. Burial will follow in St. Joseph’s Catholic Cemetery in Rowena.
Henry was born on July 15, 1912, in Praha, Texas, to Adolph and Rosalie Anderle Kubenka. He married Marcella Dobias on June 4, 1935, in Granger, Texas. They lived in Praha and Granger before moving to Miles in 1947. In 1959 they moved to their farm in Eola, Texas.
Henry was a lifelong farmer. He thoroughly enjoyed his woodwork and was dedicated to his work with his church. He was an active member of St. Philip’s Catholic Church in Eola, where he served on the board and as a sacristan for many years.
Henry was preceded in death by his parents; eight siblings; wife, Marcella; son, Gilbert Kubenka; son-in-law Franklin Shiller; granddaughter, Janice Shiller; and grandson, Michael Shiller.
Survivors include two daughters, Judith Shiller and husband, Roy, of Miles and Alice Shiller of Wall; daughter-in-law, Anna Kubenka; 13 grandchildren; 30 great-grandchildren; and sister; Frances Svetlik of Hallettsville.
Grandsons will serve as pallbearers.

BRADY — Charles E. Samuelson, 72, of Brady passed away Sunday, Dec. 2, 2001, in San Angelo. Service will be at 4 p.m. Tuesday, Dec. 4, in Heritage Funeral Home Chapel with burial in Rest Haven Cemetery. The Rev. Brian Wiggins, pastor of the Brady Presbyterian Church, will officiate.
Charles was born Jan. 26, 1929, to Charles and Mabel (Brown) Samuelson in Brady. He married Patsy Gray Quinn on Aug. 12, 1979, in Brady. An Army veteran of World War II, Charles worked for Commercial National Bank for 42 years, serving as vice president at the time of his retirement.
Survivors include his wife, Patsy of Brady; two stepsons, John Quinn and his wife, Elaine, and Jim Quinn and his wife, Cynthia, all of Brady; one stepdaughter, Jane Patterson of Balboa, Calif.; and six grandchildren.
His parents; his first wife, Catherine; and one sister, Wilda Fay Simpson, all preceded him in death.

THE REV. JAMES L. CARTER
The Rev. James L. Carter died at home Monday, Dec. 3, 2001, after a courageous battle with cancer.
James L. Carter was born Nov. 9, 1935, in Tulsa, Okla., to Gordon and Anna Lee Carter. He graduated from Tulsa High School and received his first degree from Oklahoma City University. He earned two advanced degrees, one from Eastern New Mexico University and another from Perkins School of Theology, SMU, Dallas.
In 1960, he was ordained as deacon in the New Mexico Conference of the Methodist church. It was not until 1972, after several successful years in the Chamber of Commerce field, that Rev. Carter was ordained an elder in the Southwest Texas Annual Conference of the United Methodist Church.
Carter pastored United Methodist churches in Lyford, San Angelo (Angelo Heights, Sierra Vista and St. Luke), Laredo, Austin (Berkley and Asbury), Port Lavaca and Ozona, before retiring in 1998. In 1999, he came out of retirement to become the pastor of the Water Valley United Methodist Church, where he served until his death.
Carter also served in communities in which he lived. He was president of Holding Institute in Laredo and served as chaplain for both the House and Senate of the Texas State Legislature. Carter was involved in the Boy Scouts and with several other community organizations.
Jim is survived by his wife, Barbara of San Angelo; three children and their families, Kristopher and Olivia Carter of Los Angeles, Jeanie and Miles Hasty of Sterling City and Raymond Foster of San Angelo. Jim also is survived by his “adopted” mother, Blanche Horne of San Angelo and two precious grandchildren, Matthew and Jennie Hasty of Sterling City.
Graveside service will be at 10 a.m. Wednesday, Dec. 5, in Foster Cemetery in Sterling City, Texas. Memorial service will follow at 2 p.m. at Sierra Vista United Methodist Church in San Angelo. The family will receive visitors at the church following the service.
The family extends great appreciation to VistaCare Hospice of San Angelo, members of Water Valley United Methodist Church, Evelyn Bicknell, Debbie Cross and Brian Morris for their loving care during Jim’s illness.
Memorials may be sent to VistaCare Hospice of San Angelo, the American Cancer Society or the United Methodist Children’s Home in Waco.
Honorary pallbearers will be Bob Gookin, Dr. Paul Smith, Fritz Wilke, Dr. Jack Self, Thomas Foster and clergy of the Southwest Texas Conference of the United Methodist Church.
Pallbearers will be Todd Owens, David Drake, Jason Ball, Brian Morris, Ross Hovey, Dr. Stephen Smith, R.T. Edens, Barry Joseph Abel Jr., Dwight Chldress and Chris Gookin.

DEAUN GORDON KENNEDY
DeAun Gordon Kennedy, 84, of San Angelo died Sunday, Dec. 2, 2001, in a local hospital after suffering a sudden illness at her home at Rio Concho West.
Funeral service will be at 2 p.m. Wednesday, Dec. 5, in Johnson’s Funeral Home Chapel with Dr. Jerold McBride with burial in Fairmount Cemetery. Pastor Emeritus of First Baptist Church officiating.
DeAun was born Dec. 7, 1916, in San Angelo to A.J. and Edith Lee Oxford Gordon. She attended grade school through high school in San Angelo and John Tarleton College in Stephenville, Texas. After college she held positions with Gambills Department Store, General Telephone Company and the Credit Bureau.
DeAun married Harold Wayne Kennedy on May 14, 1950. Wayne was head of the booking department for Firestone and was transferred to Dallas in 1954. DeAun then attended John Powers Modeling School in Dallas, soon after modeling for Carrier Air Conditioners at Dallas Market Hall. There she met and began modeling for Mr. Herman Marcus, who was a dress manufacture in Dallas. She modeled his clothing in Market Hall for 15 years.
In 1970, she went on the road selling the Herman Marcus clothing line. After retiring from Firestone in 1970 Wayne joined her. Their territory consisted of East Texas, South Texas, and all of Dallas. In 1975, they retired and remained at their home in Dallas. In 1991, they moved to San Angelo and have made their home at Rio Concho West.
Survivors include her husband of 51 years, Harold Wayne Kennedy; sisters, Von Dean Gordon Clement and Melba Jack Gordon Lock and husband, Joel Daniel Lock, all of San Angelo.
SAN ANGELO — James K. Nennich, 65, died Sunday, Feb. 3, 2002. Rosary will be at 7 p.m. Wednesday in Johnson’s Funeral Home Chapel. Service will be at 10 a.m. Thursday at St. Margaret’s Catholic Church with burial in Lawnhaven Memorial Gardens.
Survivors include his wife, Patricia; daughter, Debra Sauls; and sons, James Nennich Jr., Todd Nennich and Ronald Nennich.
SAN ANGELO — Melissa M. Contreras, 17, of San Angelo died Sunday, Feb. 3, 2002, in a local hospital. Arrangements are pending at Johnson’s Funeral Home.
SAN ANGELO — Shirley Pruitt, 72, of San Angelo died Saturday, Feb. 2, 2002, in Fort Stockton. Service will be at 10 a.m. Tuesday at Gutierrez Funeral Chapels/North with burial in Belvedere Cemetery.
Survivors include son, Herbert Michael Johnson of Odessa; daughters, Teresa Kay Spragins of Odessa, Laura Elaine Miller of San Angelo and Shirley Arlene Neumeier of Russellville, Ark.; brother, Don Abernathy of Austin; and sister, Toni Snow of Houston.
ASPERMONT — Ina Mae Godfrey, 89, of Peacock died Saturday, Feb. 3, 2002. Service will be at 2 p.m. today at Peacock Baptist Church with burial in Aspermont Cemetery. Arrangements are by McCoy Funeral Home.
Survivors include daughter, Jimmy Teel of Water Valley; and sons, Syl Godfrey of Peacock and John Godfrey of Hawley.
FREDERICKSBURG — Vera Louise Johnston Parrott, 89, of Fredericksburg died Saturday, Feb. 2, 2002, in a San Antonio hospital. Graveside service will be Thursday in Fort Bliss National Cemetery in El Paso. Arrangements are by Schaetter Funeral Home.
Survivors include daughters, Faye Dunn of Portales, N.M., and Babs Parrott of Fredericksburg.
JUNCTION — Elsie Dunbar Cunningham, 90, died Sunday, Feb. 3, 2002, at her residence. Service will be at 11 a.m. Tuesday at First United Methodist Church with burial in Junction Cemetery. Arrangements are by Aubrey Fife Funerals.
Survivors include sons, Gene L. Dunbar of Boerne and Philip E. Dunbar of Salida, Colo.; sister, Nita Barrow of Canyon Lake; and stepdaughters, B. Lee Spiller of Junction and Jo Ann Hammonds of Arlington.
MONAHANS — Richard Jacquez Sr., 64, of Pyote died Sunday, Feb. 3, 2002, in a local hospital. Rosary will be at 7 p.m. today in Harkey Funeral Home Chapel. Service will be at 10 a.m. Tuesday at St. John Catholic Church with burial in Pyote Cemetery.

LLANO — Margie Nell Davis, 70, died Saturday, Feb. 2, 2002, in Llano. Service will be at 4 p.m. today in Waldrope-Hatfield-Hawthorne Funeral Home Chapel with burial in Llano City Cemetery.
Survivors include her husband, Brownie Davis of Llano; daughters, Patricia Striegler of Del Valle, Deborah Cox of Llano and Pam Walker of Groves; sons, Louis Davis of Dale and Kenneth Davis of Bryan; sister, Ruth LaFont of Austin; and brother, Ira Calvin Smith of Kingsland.
