Maria M. Cavazos

"For thy sweet love remembered, Such wealth brings…" Shakespeare‘s 29th Sonnet

SAN BENITO, TX — Maria Montez Cavazos, 75, passed away on Monday, November 29, 2004, after a lengthy illness.

Maria‘s life exemplifies the American Dream. As was the case for most Mexican-Americans in the 1940s, she dropped out of school in the seventh grade to join her family as a migrant worker. At the tender age of eighteen, this young wife and mother decided she would achieve prosperity in spite of daunting obstacles such as poverty and ethnic and gender discrimination. She worked hard at many jobs and eventually, at the age of 38, she returned to school to complete her G.E.D. and take business courses. At the age of 49, she convinced her husband to sell their homestead in order to start Maria‘s Restaurant, a calculated risk that produced great results and led to other business ventures. Yet all the while, she also dedicated herself to her immediate and extended family. She raised a total of six children and three grandchildren, and nothing gave her more pleasure than seeing her family excel and achieve personal success. She worked tirelessly, aimed high, and drew her strength from prayer. Against considerable odds, she succeeded as a woman, wife, and mother.

She is survived by her husband of sixty years, Alonzo Cavazos; two daughters, Alejandra Cavazos of San Francisco and Sara Verner (Morri) of Brownsville; three sons, Alonzo, Jr. (Rose) of Harlingen, Daniel (Helen) of Harlingen, and Jose Alonzo; nine grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren; one sister, Barbara Rodriguez of San Benito and one brother, Simon Montez of Pasadena.

She was preceded in death by her son, Arturo Cavazos; daughter-in-law, Rosalinda Lerma; and granddaughter, Crystal; parents, Jose Maria Montez and Modesta Rodriguez; and sister, Gorgonia and brothers, Gilberto, Jose, Angel, Miguel, Pablo, and Manuel.

Visitation will be held at the San Benito Funeral Home on Tuesday, November 30, 2004 from 5 p.m. to 9 p.m. with a recitation of the Holy Rosary at 7 p.m.

Funeral Mass will be said at 10 a.m. on Wednesday, December 1, 2004 at Our Lady Queen of the Universe Church with burial following at Mont Meta Memorial Park.

The Cavazos Family is deeply grateful to Dr. Todd Shenkenberg and Maria Valdez, PA and the staff from Sandi Jo Funk Hospice for their assistance and generosity.

Funeral arrangements are under the direction of San Benito Funeral Home, San Benito,  Texas.
