Rebecca (Becky) A. Gasaway
MERCEDES — Rebecca (Becky) A. Gasaway, 54, passed away Tuesday, June 8, 2004 at her residence in Mercedes.
Becky was born on July 30, 1949 in Mobile, Alabama to Irvin and Margaret Stewart. She was a former resident of Charleston, SC and Atlanta, GA before moving to the Valley several years ago. She was a former teacher at St. Alban’s Episcopal Day School, a former trainer and Marketing Rep. for Budget and Realtor with Shoreline Realty. She also will be remembered as being a "Company Mom" for the Marine military Academy.
Becky is survived by her husband, Michael Gasaway of Mercedes, TX; sons, Josh and Sam Gasaway of Mercedes, TX, Jason Baxter of Burlington, NC, Shawn Gasaway of Eden, MD, Jason Gasaway of Gaithersburg, MD, mother, Margaret Stewart of Pensacola, FL. She was preceded in death by her father, Irvin Stewart and brother, Bobby Stewart.
Visitation hours will be held from 1 p.m. to 9 p.m., with the family present from 5 to 8 p.m., Sunday, June 13, 2004, at the funeral home.
Funeral services will be held at St. Paul Lutheran Church in Harlingen, 10 a.m., Monday, June 14, 2004 with the Rev. Bill Reagan and Chaplain Leo McDonald officiating. Burial will follow at Mont Meta Memorial Park.
Pallbearers will be sons of Becky, Josh Gasaway, Sam Gasaway, Jason Baxter, Jason Gasaway, Shawn Gasaway and Mark Gasaway.
In lieu of flowers, the family request that memorial donations may be made to the Marine military Academy, 320 Iwo Jima Blvd., Harlingen, Texas 78550.

Leta Mae Harris Pinson
LYFORD — Leta Pinson, affectionately known as grandmother, passed away on June 10, 2004. She was born on July 9, 1910, in Bridgeport, Texas, to James David Harris and Docia Belle Pyron. She married James Benjamin Pinson, her childhood sweetheart, on February 3, 1929, in Duncan, Oklahoma. She and James moved to Lyford in 1932, where they settled down to raise their family. In addition to working side by side with her husband, she managed their home and spent a lifetime persuing her passion for quilting. She was an incredibly loving and supportive wife, devoted mother and the ultimate grandmother. Best of all, she was a great-grandmother who was absolutely adored. Through the years, Leta was a member of the Stillman Home-Demonstration Club, a senior leader of the Stillman 4-H Club, as well as being active in the Primitive Baptist Church in Lyford and Combes.
Leta is preceded in death by her parents, her husband and eight of her nine siblings: Earl, Alvin, Olin and Leland Harris, Patie Hix, Avie Williams, Retie Cash and Nona Clay. She is survived by her daughter, Sharron Pinson Gilliam, grandchildren Stacey and David Zamora, Donna and Don Price, Joshua and Heather Gilliam and John Andrew Gilliam, and great-grandchildren James David Zamora, Elizabeth Mae Price, and Franklin Sterling Price, her sister, Theola Williams and numerous nieces, nephews and friends.
Services will be conducted by Elder Bill Waldon on Monday, June 14th at 11 a.m. at Duddlesten Funeral Home. Burial will follow at Lyford Evergreen Cemetery.

Jorge G. Alaniz
LOS FRESNOS-SANTA ROSA — Jorge G. Alaniz, 41, Our beloved son, brother, husband, father, uncle was called by the Lord after a valiant fight with his health. He is survived by his wife Rosa E. Alaniz and daughter Jessica Elizabeth of Los Fresnos, his parents Juan Alaniz, Jr. of Santa Rosa and Maria A. Alaniz of La Feria; three brothers Jaime Alaniz of Rio Hondo, Javier Alaniz of Houston, Juan Alaniz III of Dallas, two sisters Nora S. Alaniz Gonzalez of Sharyland, and Amy Alaniz Torrez of Santa Rosa. Also surviving are 15 nephews and nieces and numerous family and friends.
Jorge was a 1980 graduate of Santa Rosa High School and a retired 18-year veteran of the Port Isabel Police Dept. where he reached the rank of Sergeant and also Investigator. He was employed for five years as a Federal Safety Investigator, working in Washington, D.C.
Visitation will be held on Sunday from 1 p.m. until 9 p.m. with a rosary to be prayed at 7 p.m. Funeral Mass will be celebrated Monday at 10 a.m. at St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Santa Rosa. Cremation will follow.
Pallbearers will be Juan Bennett, Mario Alaniz, Ruben Agado, Rene Garcia, Christopher Torres, Hector Rodriguez. Honorary Pallbearers will be his nephews and nieces.
Jorge was a great man who always made everyone he knew laugh. His sense of Humor and laughter will never be forgotten. His Joys in life were his family, work and his Harley Davidson. Always in our hearts and never forgotten.

Candelario Sustaita Alamillo
HARLINGEN — Candelario S. Alamillo, 81, beloved husband, father and grandfather, went to be with the Lord on Friday, June 11, 2004. He was born on February 2, 1923 in Monterrey N.L., Mexico.
He is survived by his wife of 56 years of marriage, Aurora Quilantan Alamillo of Harlingen, TX, four daughters, Guadalupe (Adan) Cavazos of Petersburg, TX, Mary Lou Cavazos of Lubbock, TX, Blanca Estella (Jose Angel) Gonzales of Lyford, TX, and Rosalinda Alamillo of Harlingen, TX, three sons, Daniel Alamillo of Lyford, TX, Jose Luis (Margarita) Alamillo of Raymondville, TX and Robert Q. (Lupita) Alamillo of Harlingen, TX, two brothers, Roberto (Elena) Alamillo of Washington and Antonio Alamillo of Monterrey N.L., Mexico. He is also survived by 26 grandchildren and 9 great grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his son, Ruben Quilantan Alamillo.
Viewing and visitation will be held today, Sunday, June 13, 2004 from 10 a.m. until 9 p.m. with a rosary to be prayed at 7p.m. by Ralph Garcia. The funeral procession will depart the funeral home on Monday, June 14, 2004 at 9:30 a.m. for a 10 a.m. Mass of Christian burial at Queen of Peace Catholic Church with Father Matthias Shanley SS.CC. as celebrant. Interment will follow at Ashland Memorial Park Cemetery in Harlingen.
Pallbearers will be his grandsons Andrew Lee Cavazos, Ralph Cavazos Jr., Ruben Alamillo, Jr., George Alamillo, Oscar Alamillo, Jose Luis Alamillo, Jr., Daniel Alamillo, Jr., and Michael Alamillo.

Nettie Alice Gilbert
LYFORD/HARLINGEN — Nettie Alice Gilbert, 92, passed away peacefully into Heaven on Friday, June 11, 2004. N.A., as she was known to her friends, was born in Taylor, Texas, on October 27, 1911, to Margaret Alice and David B. Lewis, Sr. She attended the University of Texas in Austin and Baylor University. During a visit to her Baylor roommate who was teaching in Lyford, she met a young farmer, Bruce Gilbert, who would become her husband.
They married in October 1941. She became a homemaker and supported her husband’s endeavors in farming in the Lyford area. In 1948, their daughter, Nancy, was born. N.A. continued her roles as wife, homemaker, and mother. While her daughter was in elementary school, she returned to Pan American College and earned her degree in elementary education. She taught for many years at Lincoln-Lee Elementary in Lyford. A faithful member at the First Baptist Church in Raymondville, she taught Sunday school and sang in the choir. An accomplished seamstress, N.A. found time to sew most of the clothing for both herself and her daughter. She fostered the love of both sewing and cooking in her daughter.
After Bruce’s death, N.A. moved to Golden Palms Retirement Center. She enjoyed her 10 years there, re-acquainting with old friends and making new ones. She will be remembered for her out-going personality and engaging smile. A strong, proud lady, she will be missed by those who knew and loved her.
She was preceded in death by her beloved husband of 52 years, Bruce, in 1994. She is survived by her daughter, Nancy and son-in-law, Skip Maggard, of Harlingen; grandsons, Mark of Austin and Todd of Harlingen and brother, David B. Lewis, Jr. of Austin.
Her family wishes to extend special thanks to the staff at Golden Palms Retirement Center, Golden Palms Health Center, Valley Baptist Medical Center and Dr. Todd Shenkenberg and his staff for their loving care.
Visitation will be at Thomae Funeral Home, 701 North Bowie, San Benito, on Sunday, June 13, from 1 to 4 p.m.
Memorial services will be in the Texas Room at Golden Palms on Monday, June 14, at 3 p.m.
Graveside services will be in the Chapel at Mont Meta Memorial Park on Tuesday, June 15, at 2 p.m.

Philip John Rama
Harlingen — Philip John Rama, 20 years old, went to be with the Lord on June 9, 2004 due to a car accident. Philip was a graduate of the Science Academy, S.T.I.S.D., Class of 2002 and a sophomore at UT Pan-AM.
He is survived by his loving parents Dr. and Mrs. Adolfo Rama and his two brothers Francis and George Rama.
Visitation will be held at the family’s residence located at 1102 E. Taylor St. in Harlingen, today, Sunday, June 13, 2004 from 10 a.m. until 1:30 p.m. The funeral procession will depart the family’s residence on Monday, June 14, 2004, at 1:30 p.m. for a 2 p.m. Mass of Christian burial at St. Anthony’s Catholic Church with Fr. Edouard Antangana as the celebrant. Pallbearers will be family and friends. Philip’s remains will be cremated. Jacinto "Chinto" Hernandez
SAN BENITO, TX — Jacinto "Chinto" Hernandez, 89, entered into rest on Monday, June 14, 2004 at his residence. Mr. Hernandez was born on August 16, 1914 in Jaral de Berros, Mexico to Mariano and Apolinar Ramires Hernandez.
He was a lifelong resident of San Benito. Chinto was a Catholic War Veteran Member of Post 1109 and a Second World War Veteran.
He was employed with the City of San Benito for many years and also made many driveways for families in San Benito.
Chinto is survived by his children, Gregorio (Rosario) Hernandez, J. Irma Lopez, Juan A. Hernandez, Mario Hernandez of Waukeegan, IL, Jose L. (Nelda) Hernandez, Ricardo (Janie) Gomez, Rosalinda (Rene) Claudio, Santa T. (Joe Tolento) Noyola, Eduardo (Aurora) Hernandez and Roel Hernandez; grandson, Sgt. Eduardo (Miyo) Hernandez, Jr. of Okinawa, Japan; 24 grandchildren; 14 great grandchildren and his siblings, Jesus Hernandez, Sr. of San Benito, Petra Cuevas of San Benito, Eustacio Hernandez of Weslaco, Clarita Perez of Florida and Cruz Cortez of Florida.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Romana Hernandez and his son, Reymundo Hernandez.
Visitation will be held Wednesday, June 16, 2004 at San Benito Funeral Home Chapel from 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. with the Holy Rosary at 7 p.m.
Funeral service will be Thursday, June 17, 2004 at St. Jospeh Catholic Church at 11 a.m. Interment will follow at Mont Meta Memorial Park with military Honors conducted by the American Legion Post 205 and VFW Post 2410.
Pallbearers will be Roberto L. Noyola, Jr., Christopher Guzman, Rene Claudio II, Daniel Claudio, Rene Claudio, Jr., and Gregorio Hernandez, Jr.

Steve Taylor Gallaway
FORT WORTH — Steve Taylor Gallaway, 90, joined his wife, Grace, in heaven on June 15, 2004, from his home.
Graveside Services: 2:00 p.m., Friday, June 18, at Bluebonnet Hills Memorial Park, 5725 Colleyville Blvd.
Visitation: 6:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m., Thursday, June 17, at the funeral home.

Steve was born June 25, 1913, in Kosciusko, Mississippi. On October 22, 1940, he had the good fortune to marry Grace Evelyn Niles in Grapevine, Tx. and settled in South Texas, where they lived for 40 years. After owning several successful businesses they retired to Fort Worth in 1980 and attended Glenview Baptist Church.
Steve loved children and showed this through his commitment to the Rio Grande Children’s home in Mission, Tx., where he was a member of the Board of Directors for several years and also served on the Board of Directors of the Rio Grande Valley Livestock Show and Rodeo for many years.
Being handicapped himself with polio, he dedicated his life from 1980 on to providing mobility products to over 5,200 individuals through his non-profit organization, Handicap Products Inc.
Survivors: son, Walter Gallaway; daughter, Sheryl Johnson, four grandchildren, Karen Moorhead, Jodi Renz, Christine Gallaway, and Michael Bettinazzi; five great-grandchildren; two brothers, Ed Gallaway, and Bob Gallaway; two sisters, Sybil Erwin and Phylis Bailey; and a host of other relatives. Of most notable mention are a group of longtime friends considered as family, including Debbie Darville, Sarah Bumps, Lillian Bilton, Carl and Roberta Keuhn, Smokey Boyle, and Buddy Owens, to name only a few of a long list of priceless and precious friendships established over the years.

SAN BENITO, TX — Roberto G. Garcia, 64, passed away at Valley Baptist Medical Center on June 29, 2004.
He is preceded in death by his wife, Esther Longoria Garcia and son, Roberto Garcia, Jr.
Survivors included his daughter, Patricia G. Trevino of San Benito; 2 sons, Ruben Garcia and Raul Garcia both of San Benito, TX; grandson, Romelo Trevino of San Benito; 5 sisters and 3 brothers.
Visitation will be held today, Thursday, July 1, 2004 from 12 noon to 9 p.m. at Thomae-Garza Funeral Home with a rosary to be recited at 7 p.m.
Funeral service will be held at 11 a.m., Friday, July 2, 2004 at St. Benedict’s Catholic Church in San Benito. Interment will follow to Mont Meta Cemetery.

Alvin L. "Al" Broman
HARLINGEN, TX — Alvin L. "Al" Broman, passed away June 29, 2004. He was born to Herbert and Olive Broman in Brady, Texas on April 13, 1921.
He graduated from Melvin High School in Melvin, Texas in 1939 and entered into Texas Tech in Lubbock, Texas. He later went into the Air Force for five years, before he became associated with the U.S. Department of Agriculture. After 35 years he retired in 1976. After retiring, he studied real estate in Cooke County Jr. College in Gainsville, Texas where he got his salesman’s license and broker’s License to sell real estate; after which he was involved in real estate a couple years in Harlingen.
He was a member of the Wesley United Methodist Church, the Elks Lodge, and had been a member of the Harlingen Country Club and Harlingen Board of Realtors.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Herbert and Olive Broman; brothers, Speedy, James, and Shorty Broman.
He is survived by his wife of 43 years, Ethel Woolam Broman; stepdaughter, Jannifer Jones; four grandchildren, Joan Santa Maria of Chicago, IL, Jeff McDonald of Chicago, IL, John McDonald of Dallas, TX, and Gina Soddy of Katy, TX; as well as ten great grandchildren; and numerous nieces and nephews.
Visitation hours will be held Thursday, July 1, 2004 from 12 p.m. to 9 p.m. at the funeral home.
Funeral services will be held July 2, 2004 at 10 a.m. at the Buck Ashcraft Funeral Home with Rev. Sam Hunnycutt officiating. Private graveside services will be held at Mont Meta Memorial Park.

Flossie B. McBride
HARLINGEN, TX — Flossie Beard McBride, born April 12, 1908 in Milano, Texas passed away in Harlingen on June 29, 2004. Flossie lived in Harlingen for approximately 70 years. In 2000, at the age of 92, Flossie sold her little Mustang Motel, which she managed for 40 years and relocated to McAllen with her son. She returned to the Harlingen area in 2004 after suffering from a stroke.
Flossie obtained her Bachelor of Science degree at Southwest Teachers College in San Marcos in 1935 and her Master’s in Education at Denver University in 1951. Flossie retired in 1976 after 51 years of teaching in the Rio Grande Valley. She was devoted to promoting excellence in Special Education. She served as President of Easter Seals in 1951; she served on the Texas Easter Seal Board from 1966-69; was President of the Association Council for Mentally Retarded Children and Adults from 1964-74, was Co-founder of the Rio Grande Council for Habilitation of Mentally Retarded and spent 50 years in Eastern Star. She was honored as Outstanding Teacher of the Year in 1975.
Flossie is survived by her two children Marian of Washington, D.C. and Arthur (Jimmy) of Harlingen, Texas. She leaves behind her granddaughter, Sharon Walsh-Cavazos (Harlingen) and husband, Art along with their sons, Christopher and Matthew. She is also survived by 3 grandsons; her eldest grandson is James Patrick Walsh III of McAllen, Sean Joseph Walsh of Austin and wife, Hanna along with their son, Brennon and daughter, Kyla; and her youngest grandson, Michael Leigh Walsh of Dallas and expectant wife, Carolyn along with their daughter, Caitlynn.
Our family wishes to express sincere gratitude to the staff at Angel Care Homes in Harlingen. The past few months brought great comfort to Flossie and her family with their excellent care and nurturing environment.
Funeral services will be held Friday, July 2, 2004 at the First Baptist Church in Harlingen at 2 p.m. with Dr. Don Higginbotham officiating.
