Marvel W. Hemphill
WESLACO, TX — Marvel W. Hemphill, 85, passed away August 19, 2003 at John Knox Medical Center in Weslaco.
He was born December 28, 1917 in Watertown, South Dakota. In 1935, he graduated from Ida Grove High School in Ida Grove, IA.
He then went to work as a clerk in a local grocery store. About 1940, he began working/instructing for McDonnell Douglas Aircraft in St. Louis, MO and Lake View, IA, as a Sheet Metal Fabricator.
On August 10, 1941, he married Helen B. Benzing in What Cheer, IA.
In 1943, he entered the United States Army Air Corps and was eventually stationed in England, France and Germany before his discharge in December of 1945. He then used the G.I. Bill to attend the American Institute of Business in Des Moines, IA, where he received a certificate in accounting. After graduating, he moved to Fort Dodge, IA, where he was an accountant and business owner until his retirement in 1979. During this time he introduced the first automated check sorter for banking operations in the state of Iowa. After his wife’s death, he moved to south Texas in 1993, where he met and married Beryl E. Hoyt.
He also joined First United Methodist Church in Weslaco and became active in many of its ministries and boards. After retirement, over several years, he built and donated thousand of wooden toys to under privileged children at Christmas, through many different charitable organizations.
He was preceded in death by his parents; two brothers; and his first wife, Helen B. Hemphill.
Survivors include his loving wife, Beryl E. Hoyt-Hemphill of Weslaco; his son, David Hemphill of Austin, TX; his daughter, Cheri Ann Grills and her husband, Guy of Washington, D.C.; three grandchildren and one great-granddaughter.
Services will be held today, Friday, August 22, 2003 at 5:30 p.m. at First United Methodist Church in Weslaco, with the Rev. Myron Ricketts, Pastor of First United Methodist Church, officiating. Family will be receiving friends at 4 p.m. at the church until the time of service. Interment will be held at a later date at North Lawn Cemetery in Fort Dodge, IA.
Serving as pallbearers will be Curtis Haley, Tom Shidler, Jay Madden, Chip Sparrow, Martin Hagne and Rodney Kaase.
Friends who wish may make memorial contributions to First United Methodist Church, 520 S. Illinois, Weslaco, TX 78596.

Daisy Cox Thomas
HARLINGEN, TX — The children of Daisy Cox Thomas, daughter of the late Ruben Q. and Emma White Cox invite you to attend the celebration of her homecoming, Saturday, September 6, 2003, at 2 p.m.
Viewing will be held from 12 p.m. to 2 p.m. at Mont Meta Restlawn Cox Funeral Home in Harlingen, Texas.
Officiating will be Pastor Sam Hunnicutt from the Westley United Methodist Church. Committal services will follow at the Combes Cemetery.
She went to join her loving husband, John Louis Thomas; father and mother, Ruben Q. and Emma White Cox; and beloved family and friends on September 3, 2003 at Mother Frances Hospital in Tyler, Texas.
Celebrating her reunion are her 3 children, Riley Laningham, Ray Laningham and wife, Candis; and daughter, Muriel Horton; brothers, Lawrence Cox, Allen Cox, Jerry Cox, Lem and Lee Cox; sister, Susie and Charlie Walker; 11 grandchildren and 17 great grandchildren.
Serving as pallbearers will be her grandsons.

Gloria Melissa Robles
SAN BENITO, TX — Gloria Melissa Robles passed away Thursday, September 4, 2003 at Valley Baptist Medical Center surrounded by her loving family.
Gloria graduated from San Benito High School and also graduated Suma Cum Laude from St. Edwards University in Austin, TX.
Gloria traveled all over the world as an airline stewardess for Pan American Airlines.
She was an Immigration Officer in Dallas for the past 11 years.
She was a very successful independent businesswoman and was a very giving person. Gloria was always the life of the party. She would always buy toys for the needy neighbor kids at Christmas. Gloria was awarded the National Hammer Award for her participation in the summer Olympics in Atlanta, Georgia in 1996. She insured that the athletes met the eligibility requirements to be admissible to participate in the United States in accordance with the immigration and nationality law.
Gloria is survived by her mother, Felisitas Robles; her four sisters, Santa (Jesse) Morales of Brownsville, Alma (Mario) Maldonado of Austin, Maggie Robles Aguirre of San Benito, Frances (Guz) Martinez of San Antonio; and one brother, Juan "Titi" Martinez of San Benito; and numerous nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her father, Eudelio Robles; grandmother, Pomposa Flores; and nephew, Mario Morales.
Visitation and Rosary were held on Friday, September 5, 2003 at San Benito Funeral Home.
Funeral services will be held Saturday, September 6, 2003 at St. Theresa Catholic Church at 11:30 a.m. with Father Alphonsus McChugh, SS, CC officiating. Entombment to follow at Mont Meta Memorial Park.
The Immigration Color Guard will honor her passing.
Pallbearers will be her nephews, Mario Eloy Maldonado, Bennie Maldonado, John Morales, Joel Morales, Adan Salgado and Trey Cavazos. Honorary pallbearers will be Mario Maldonado, Guz Martinez and Mauricio Florez.

Martina O. Vasquez
SAN BENITO, TX — Martina O. Vasquez, 94, entered into rest on Friday, September 5, 2003 at her residence. She was born January 1, 1909 to Cecilio Obregon and Ignacia Vasquez.
Survivors include her daughters, Eva, Elida, Irene, Maria and Genoveva; sons, Genaro Manuel, Alejandro, Javier; 51 grandchildren, 96 great grandchildren, and 35 great great grandchildren and 2 great great grandchildren.
She is preceded in death by her husband, Amancio Vasquez; sons, Pedro and Alfonso Vasquez; granddaughter, Maribel Vasquez; and her parents, Cecilio Obregon and Ignacia Hernandez.
Visitation will be held at the San Benito Funeral Home from 4 p.m. to 9 p.m. with a rosary at 7 p.m. on Saturday, September 6, 2003 and from 1 p.m. to 9 p.m. with a rosary at 7 p.m. on Sunday, September 7, 2003.
Funeral services will be held at the St. Benedict’s Catholic Church at 10:30 a.m., Monday, September 8, 2003. Interment will follow at the San Benito City Cemetery.

Maria M. Pineda
HARLINGEN, TX — Maria M. Pineda, 65, entered into eternal rest while at Valley Baptist Center on Thursday,September 4, 2003. She was a lifelong resident of Harlingen and worked at the William Carter Company for 14 years.
Maria is preceded in death by her mother, Agustina Alvarez; and her granddaughter, Mary Lara.
She is survived by her loving father, Refugio Pineda Hernandez from Reynosa, Mexico; sisters, Viviana Salazar Alvarez from Tampico and Victoria Pineda de Barrera from Reynosa; daughter, Maria Luisa Pineda Castro from Matamoros; son, Jose Ricardo Loredo from Harlingen; grandchildren, Antonia Mary Lara, Harlingen, Jacob Castro, Matamoros, Joe Adam and Richy Anthony Loredo, Harlingen; niece, Liza Ann Barrera, Edinburg, Pablo Sergio Barrera, Puebla; and daughter-in-law, Maria Loredo, Harlingen.
Visitation is scheduled from 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. on Sunday, September 7, 2003, with a rosary to be recited at 7 p.m.
Funeral Mass will be celebrated at 2 p.m. on Monday at Queen of Peace Catholic Church. Funeral services are under the direction of Garza-Elizondo Funeral Home.
Eufracia Limon Macias
SAN BENITO — Eufracia Limon Macias, 95, passed away Friday, September 12, 2003 at Harlingen Medical Center. She was born on January 1, 1908 in Caderieta, Nuevo Leon Mexico and was a resident of San Benito for 70 years.
Eufracia was preceded in death by her husband, Simon Macias and her sons, Gavino Macias and Estanislado Limon.
Surviving children are Petra Guardiola, Timotea Macias, Enedina Macias, Guadalupe Macias, Lucio Macias, Geronimo Macias and Marcelino Macias. Also surviving are 22 grandchildren, 45 great-grandchildren, and 15 great-great grandchildren.
Visitation will be held at San Benito Funeral Home on Sunday, September 14, 2003 from 1 p.m. to 9 p.m. with a rosary at 7 p.m.
Funeral services will be held at St. Benedict’s Catholic Church on Monday, September 15, 2003 at 10 a.m. Interment will follow at Mont Meta Memorial Park.
Pallbearers will be Gavino Macias Jr., Rene Leal, Marcelino Macias Jr., Eliazar Guardiola, Ernesto Guardiola and Michael Andrew Limon.

Oralia Solis
HARLINGEN — Oralia Solis, age 73, entered the Lord’s Kingdom early Friday morning September 12, 2003. She was a native of Sebastian, but had resided most of her lifetime in Harlingen. She worked for many years as a receptionist at Thomae-Garza Funeral Home-Harlingen in the 1980’s.
She is preceded in death by her sister Angelita Clark and nephew Homero De La Rosa.
She is survived by a son Xavier R. (Cynthia) Cepeda of Harlingen; 1 brother, Reynaldo Solis of Raymondville; and numerous nieces and nephews.
Visitation will be held Sunday September 14, 2003 from 1 p.m. to 9 p.m.
Funeral services will be Monday, September 15, 2003 at 10 a.m. at the Santa Rosa Funeral Home Chapel with Pastor Robert Rodriguez officiating. Burial will follow to Restlawn Memorial Park Cemetery.

Shirley Jean Moore
HARLINGEN, TX — Shirley Jean Moore departed her earthly home on Sunday, September 14, 2003 after a brief but brave battle with cancer.
Shirley was born to J.W. and Vada Barfield on August 13, 1936 in Houston, Texas.
Shirley was a lifelong homemaker and had lived in Harlingen all of her adult life.
Shriley was an accomplished and talented baker whose beautifully decorated cakes were enjoyed on special occasions by her family and friends.
Despite her recent illness, Shirley remained a devoted wife, mother-in-law and grandmother who was more concerned for her loved ones than she was for herself.
Shirley is survived by her beloved husband of 49 years, Carl (Cap) Moore; her sons, Kenny Moore and his wife, Missy, and Rick Moore and his wife, Diane.
Shirley is also survived by her grandchildren who were the "Light of Her Life", Jennifer, Dustin, Brandon, Kaitlyn and Kylie all of Harlingen.
Shirley’s grandchildren always knew they could depend on their "Nanny" to go the extra mile for them.
Other surviving family members include her mother-in-law, Gertha Moore of San Benito; sister-in-law, Mae Barfield of Harlingen; brother-in-law, Donnie Moore and his wife, Jeanette of Rio Hondo, Texas; sister-in-law, Betty Evans and her husband, Preston of Spring Branch, Texas; sister-in-law, Lee Wise of Spring Beach, Texas; sister-in-law, Toy Moore of Victoria, Texas and numerous nieces and nephews.
Shirley is preceded in death by her parents, J.W. and Vada Barfield; her beloved daughter, Patti; her brother, J.W. (Bill) Barfield; her father-in-law, Howard Moore; and her brothers-in-law, Dale Moore and Jimmy Wise.
Services will be held at Buck Ashcraft Funeral Home in Harlingen on Wednesday, September 17, 2003 at 10 a.m. Visitation will be held on Tuesday, September 16, 2003 from 12 p.m. to 9 p.m. Burial will follow at Mont Meta Memorial Park.
The following family members and close friends will serve as pallbearers, Mike Lingensjo, Jr. Pena, Mark Mehaffey, Randy Mehaffey, Danny Elder, and Todd Aune.
The family would like to express their appreciation to the Sandi Jo Funk Hospice Foundation, especially Amabelli and Scott who were of tremendous support during this difficult time in their lives.
Shirley was truly a beautiful woman who will be missed by everyone who was fotunate enough to have been a part of her world.

Patricia A. Deal
HARLINGEN, TX — Patricia A. Deal, 66, of Harlingen, died at her home Sunday morning after a several-months battle with cancer.
She was the beloved wife of Jerry Deal, and cherished mother of Dr. James L. Benoist (Kristen), Denver, CO; John Bryan Benoist, Harlingen; and Kimberly A. Marquez (Alex), Texas City; and her mother, Frances Logan, Harlingen.
She is also survived by her brothers, Gary Logan, Harlingen; and James Logan, of Moberly, MO; stepchildren, Jerry A. Deal, (Berry) Ventura, CA; James Deal (Debbie), Mesa, AZ, Jonathan Deal (Aimee), Fuqua, N.C., Joel Deal (Michelle), San Antonio, Jay Deal (Darla), San Antonio, Julia Vangroll (Allen), Killeen, Texas and Denee "Charley" Deal, Clear Lake, Texas; also 23 grandchildren.
She is preceded in death by her father, James Logan and a stepson, Jeffrey Deal.
Patricia was born on January 12, 1937, in St. Louis, MO, and had been a resident of the Rio Grande Valley for 35 years.
Patricia was a retired nurse from South Texas Hospital and was the business manager of the Leader Newspaper. Prior to her becoming a nurse, she worked as a hairdresser in St. Louis, MO and had worked at Richard’s Restaurant in Harlingen.
She was a member of Immaculate Heart of Mary Church, Harlingen.
A Memorial Mass will be held Thursday, September 18, 2003 at 10 a.m. with Deacon Johnny Valenzuela as celebrant. Private burial will be at Valley Memorial Gardens Cemetery in Mission.
In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the Sandi Jo Funk Hospice or the American Cancer Society.
