HARLINGEN, TX — Velma Sada Gonzalez 39, passed away on Tuesday afternoon at Valley Baptist Medical Center due to a sudden illness.
She is survived by her parents Roberto R. and Ofelia Sada Gonzalez; sister, Marivel Gonzalez of Harlingen; Uncles, Reynaldo R. (Odelia) Gonzalez of Harlingen, David (Isabel) Sada of Harlingen, Alfredo (Magdalena) Sada of Calif., Daniel (Mirtala) Sada, Gilbert (Tina) Sada, Baldemar Sada and Gabriel Sada also of Harlingen; Aunts, Sofia R. Gonzalez of Harlingen, Esperanza Perez of Mich., Eva Sada of California, Beatrice Dodson of Harlingen and numerous relatives.
Visitation today from 10:30 a.m. till 9:00 p.m. with a prayer service at 7:00 p.m. at Trinity Funeral Chapel.
Funeral services Friday at 11:00 a.m. at Segunda Iglesia Presbiteriana located at 901 W. Lincoln with Rev. Benito Lira Officiating.
Entombment will follow at Restlawn Memorial Park.
Pallbearers will be Gilbert Sada , Jr., Eddie Sada, Juan Gabriel Sada, Kenneth Dodson, Luis Quiroz and Jay Garcia.

Pedro V. Soto
Harlingen, TX — Pedro V. Soto, 72, entered into rest on Monday at his residence surrounded by his family.
Mr. Soto was a 46 year resident of Harlingen and was preceded in death by his parents and other family members.
He is survived by his loving wife of 46 years, Juana Maria Soto of Harlingen, TX, daughter Sandra S. (David) Gomez of Harlingen, TX, sons Pedro (Angelita) Soto, Jr., of Cibolo, TX, Francisco (Margarita R.) Soto of Bastrop, TX, Hugo (Ofelia) Soto of McAllen, TX, grandchildren Jonathan E. Soto, Andrew J. Soto, Ciara M. Soto, Cielo C. Soto, David L. Gomez, II, Daniel Jacob Gomez, brother Hipolito Soto of Mexico and sister Piedad Soto of Mexico.
Visitation will be held today, July 30, 2003 from 10 a.m. until 9 p.m. at the Rudy Garza Chapel of Peace with the Holy rosary to be prayed at 7 p.m.
The funeral procession will depart the Rudy Garza Funeral Home on Thursday, July 31, 2003 at 9:30 a.m. for a 10 a.m. Mass of Christian burial at Queen of Peace Catholic Church with Fr. Matt Shanley as the celebrant.
Entombment will follow at Restlawn Memorial Park Mausoleum in La Feria, TX.
Pallbearers will be Pedro Soto, Jr., Francisco Soto, Hugo Soto, David Gomez, Rogelio Salazar and Dionicio Castillo, and Salomon Maldonado.
Honorary pallbearer will be Marcos A. Barrientes and Ascencion O. Rodriguez.
Myrtis Beachum Moore
RAYMONDVILLE, TX — Myrtis Beachum Moore was born on May 26, 1917 in Smithville, Miss. At five years of age, her family moved to Raymondville, Texas.
She graduated from Raymondville High School in 1934. She attended college at Texas A & I in Kingsville, and Pan American in Edinburg, Texas where she earned her B. A. degree.
Myrtis taught school in Weslaco and Harlingen for a number of years. Myrtis was an active member of the First United Methodist Church in Harlingen.
She was a member of the Nine-Thirty Club and Teachers Retirement.
Myrtis was preceeded in death by her husband, Randolph Moore and her daughter Teresa Moore Walther.
She is survived by her daughter Margaret (Peter) Kerezman of Kingsville, Texas, sister Ruth Beachum of Raymondville, Texas, sister Syble (Weldon) Gilcrease of Weslaco, Texas, five grandchildren, Lisa Walther, of Ft. Scott, Kansas, Jim (Jennifer) Walther of Denton, Texas, Charles (Jeanette) Walther of Lawrence, Kansas, Tony Broadway and Andy Broadway, of Austin, Texas, three great-grandchildre, Claire and Adam Walther of Lawrence, Kansas, and Deven Walther of Denton, Texas, her son-in-law Tom (Jane) Walther of Pittsburgh, Kansas, and numerous nieces and nephews.
Visitation hours will be held from 12 p.m. to 9 p.m. with the family recieving friends from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m., Friday, August 1, 2003 at the funeral home.
Funeral services will be held at Buck Ashcraft Funeral Home, 10 a.m., Saturday, August 2, 2003 with the Rev. Steve Purdy officiating.
Burial will follow at Mont Meta Memorial Park.
Memorials may be made to the First United Methodist Church in Harlingen or to the American Cancer Society.

Thema Marie "Jacobs" Johnson
HARLINGEN, TX — Thelma Marie (Jacobs) Johnson, 83, a long time resident of Harlingen, passed away at the Valley Baptist Medical Center on Wednesday, July 30, 2003.
She left this world to be with her Lord following a lengthy illness. Thelma was born February 27, 1920, in Story City, Iowa to Martin and Ethel Jacobs.
She married Orland S. (Johnny) Johnson on May 24, 1939, in Ames, Iowa.
Thelma was born and spent most of her life in central Iowa. She was a devoted Christian, wife and mother and was actively involved in many church activities at Bethesda Lutheran Church in Ames.
She and Johnny moved to Harlingen in 1986 and made it their permanent home. One of her great joys in life was attending sporting events.
The Harlingen Cardinals and Hawks have lost one of their most avid supporters.
She is survived by her beloved husband, Orland; a daughter, Marie S. Strusky; and her son, Ronald D. Johnson, both of Colorado Springs, Colorado. She leaves behind two sisters: Emma Martinson of Ames and Wanda Rahto of Luther, Iowa. Thelma had three grandchildren: Caron Lynn Reilly of Colorado Springs, Michael James Strusky of Glen Allen, Virginia, and Holly Marie Stone of Manchester, New Hampshire; two great-grandsons, Dylan and Tyler Stone; four great-granddaughters, Brynn and Kyra Reilly, and Samantha and Logan Strusky; and numerous nieces and nephews. Thelma was particularly close to her daughter-in-law, Jan Johnson, of Colorado Springs.
She was preceded in death by her parents; three brothers, Henry, Frank and Martin Jr.; and two sisters, Dorothy Keltner of Ames and Norma Keltner of Story City, Iowa.
A memorial service will be held at Rudy Garza Funeral Home in Harlingen on Saturday, August 2nd at 9:00 AM with Pastor Bob Slade officiating. Interment will be in the Bethany Lutheran Church cemetery in Kelly, Iowa.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made to The Boys and Girls Club of Harlingen, 1209 W. Washington St., Harlingen, Texas 78550.

Matilde Navarro Garcia
Harlingen, TX — Matilde Navarro Garcia, 97, entered into eternal rest July 30, 2003 at Retama Manor Nursing Center.
She was born February 28, 1903 to Julian and Dolores Navarro. She was a lifelong resident of Harlingen.
She is survived by one sister, Julia Ramos and several nieces and nephews: Joe Mendoza, Bertha M. Tristan, Elena Mares, Elvita Lucio, Mary Davalos, Armando Davalos and Frances Ramos, all of Harlingen.
Funeral Mass will be held today, August 1, 2003 at 2 p.m. at Immaculate Heart of Mary Church with Fr. Pedro Briseno as celebrant.
Interment will follow at Harlingen City Cemetery, under the direction of Trinity Funeral Chapel.
Alcadio M. Galvan Sr.
SAN BENITO, TX — Alcadio M. Galvan Sr., 105, passed away at Harlingen Medical Center on August 3, 2003.
Mr. Galvan was a resident of San Benito, Texas for over 28 years; he also spent his life in farming agriculture, recognized in the Valley Morning Star on his 104th birthday, City Commissioner.
Joe Hernandez is greatly acknowledged for organizing his 104th birthday among those that attended were the mayor of San Benito then and state representative Jim Solis.
Survivors include his former wife, Tomasa Rodriguez of San Benito, TX; one daughter, Maria Guadalupe (Albert) Sanchez of San Benito, TX; five sons, Santos (Michelle) Galvan of Minnesota, Placido (Rafaela) of Houston, TX, Miguel Galvan of Harlingen, TX, Fernando (Dora) Galvan of Kansas, and Alcadio (Linda) Galvan Jr., of Laredo, TX; 16 grandchildren and 4 great grandchildren.
Visitation will be held Tuesday, August 5, 2003 from 12 noon to 9 p.m. with a prayer service to start 7 p.m. at the Thomae Garza Funeral Chapel.
Chapel services will be held at 2 p.m. on Wednesday, August 6, 2003 at Thomae Garza Funeral Chapel. Interment will follow to Mont Meta Memorial Park.

SAN BENITO, TX — Aurora Garcia Gonzales, 86, of San Benito, Texas passed away at her residence on August 2, 2003.
Survivors include her 10 daughters, Cecilia Puentes, Delia Gonzales, Josefina (Refugio) Guerra, Gloria Huerta, Raquel (Mere) Zuniga, Erminia (Pedro) Gonzalez, Jesusa (Baldo) Ramos, Estella Rangel, Anita Hernandez, and Elida Gonzales; 3 sons, David (Ninfa) Gonzales, Victor (Sylvia) Gonzales, and Jose Maria (Esmeralda) Gonzales, Jr.; 66 grandchildren; 104 great grandchildren; several great great grandchildren and several great great great grandchildren.
She is preceded in death by her husband, Jose Maria Gonzales; son, Gilberto Gonzales; and her parents, Agapito and Rumula Garcia.
Visitation will begin today, Tuesday, August 5, 2003 from 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. with a Holy Rosary to be recited at 7 p.m. at Thomae Garza Funeral Home Chapel. Funeral services will be held 10 a.m., Wednesday, August 6, 2003 at St. Helen’s Catholic Church in Rio Hondo.
Interment will follow to Las Yescas Cemetery.

Akintunde O. Popoola
HARLINGEN, TX — Akintunde Olatunji Popoola, 49, entered into rest on Sunday at Valley Baptist Medical Center. Akintunde was born in Nigeria on February 10, 1954 to Wilson and Ayoade Popoola.
He was employed as a Nutritionist for the State of Texas.
Akintunde is survived by his wife, Laura Alvarado Popoola of Harlingen, TX; father, Wilson Oyebowale Popoola of Nigeria; brothers, Olaoye Popoola of Georgia; Pastor Olawale Popoola of Nigeria; sisters, Olatoun Okunade of Tennessee, Mobola Fashola of Maryland, Abiola Shobanjo of Nigeria and numerous other family and friends.
Visitation will held today, Tuesday, August 5, 2003, from 10 a.m. until 9 p.m. at the Rudy Garza Chapel of Peace with a prayer service to be held at 7 p.m.
