Will Looney
EDINBURG, TX — Will Looney, age 28, born on August 25, 1974 in McAllen, Texas, passed away on Monday morning, July 21, 2003 in an automobile accident in Cadereyta, Mexico. He was traveling to Monterrey, Mexico where he was participating in an internship for the summer.
Will is survived by his mother and father, Carol Lynn and Cullen Looney of Edinburg; his sisters, Lorin Runnels and her husband Forrest, of McAllen, and Courtney Looney of Los Angeles; and by his fiancée, Margot Marsh of Austin; as well as by many family and friends that will greatly miss his presence.
Will was a natural leader, and while attending Edinburg High School, he was elected to serve as president of 4-H for the state of Texas. He went on to attend Texas A&M University where he became the president of Phi Gamma Delta Fraternity, his senior year. Upon graduating. Will moved to New York City where he worked in financial planning and, after a couple of years, transferred within his company to Boston, Massachusetts. Following this move, he returned to Texas, settling in Austin a few years ago. Currently, Will was enrolled in the McCombs School of Business MBA program at the University of Texas in Austin.
Visitation with family greeting friends will be today, Wednesday, July 23, 2003 from 4 p.m. to 6 p.m. at 506 East Canton Road, in Edinburg.
Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m., Thursday morning, July 24, 2003 at the Anacahuita Ranch with the Rev. Matthew Kessler and Rev. Kirby Smith officiating.

Janis Larue "Jan" Smith
CORPUS CHRISTI, TX — Janis Larue "Jan" Smith departed her earthly home peacefully and quietly on Monday, July 21, 2003. Her spiritual body began its heavenly journey where she will live in everlasting peace, comfort and love with our Lord and Savior.
She was born on October 13, 1934 in Harlingen, Texas to Earl and Vera White. Janis married Herbert Smith of Rio Hondo on October 19, 1951 and lived most of their married life in Harlingen, Texas and later relocating to Corpus Christi, Texas in 1977. She retired from Southwestern Bell Telephone Co. in 1989 with over 30 years of service. She was a member of Second Baptist Church in Corpus Christi. Janis was a loving wife, mother and grandmother who loved her family very much.
She is survived and remembered by her husband of 51 years, Bert Smith; one son, Kenneth Smith (Mary Ellen) of Corpus Christi, Texas; one grandson, Austin Smith and one granddaughter, Shannon Smith both of Corpus Christi, Texas.
Visitation will be held from 4 p.m. to 9 p.m., Wednesday, July 23, 2003 at Buck Ashcraft Funeral Home.
Funeral services will be held at 10 a.m., Thursday, July 24, 2003 at Buck Ashcraft Funeral Home with burial to follow at Mont Meta Memorial Park in San Benito, Texas.

Nelson O. Taylor
HARLINGEN, TX — Nelson O. Taylor, 86, of Farragut, TN, formerly of Harlingen, TX and Missouri Valley, IA, passed away early Tuesday morning, July 22, 2003 at NHC Cavett Hill in Farragut.
Nelson was a member of the Presbyterian Church in Missouri Valley and Harlingen.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Jean E. Taylor in 2001.
Survivors include his son and daughter-in-law, Jay N. and Charlotte Taylor; grandson, Ryan Taylor all of Farragut.
A Celebration of Life will be held at 2 p.m., Saturday at NHC Cavett Hill with Dr. Steve Sallee officiating.

Martha L. Moore
HARLINGEN, TX — Martha L. Moore, 76, passed away Tuesday, July 22, 2003 at Valley Baptist Medical Center after a short illness.
Martha was born on April 21, 1927 in Rio Hondo and had been a lifetime resident of Harlingen.
She was a Charter member of the First Assembly of God Church in Harlingen where she was always very active.
She is survived by sons, Terry F. Moore, Jr. of Freeport, TX, Mark D. Moore of Garland, TX, and David Moore of Katy, TX; brother, Buddy Jacobson of Houston, TX; grandchildren, Christina Moore, Carissa Moore, John Moore, Martha L. Moore, Trisha Moore, Brian Moore, and Elizabeth Moore.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Terry in 1991.
Visitation hours will be from 2 p.m. to 9 p.m., Friday, July 25, 2003 at the funeral home.
Funeral services will be held at the First Assembly of God Church, 10 a.m., Saturday, July 26, 2003 with the Rev. Wade Payton officiating. Entombment will follow at Mont Meta Memorial Park.

Micaela Alvarado
SAN BENITO, TX — Micaela Alvarado of San Benito passed away Wednesday at the Valley Baptist Medical Hospital.
She was born in San Luis Potosi, Mexico, May 1911 to Refugia and Pomposo Alvarado and came to the USA when she was 6 ½ years old.
Mrs. Alvarado is survived by three daughters, Esperanza Perez, Julia Alvarado, and Ernestina Torres; 15 grandchildren; 21 great-grandchildren; and 6 great-great-grandchildren.
Micaela became a citizen in 1998 and was very happy that she grew up in the U.S.A.
Rosary will be held Friday, July 25, 2003, at 7 p.m. at the Thomae Funeral Home Chapel, 701 N. Bowie St., San Benito.
Funeral Mass will be held on Saturday, July 26, 2003, at 10 a.m. at St. Joseph’s Catholic Church in San Benito.

HUMBLE, TX — Mary Elizabeth Bright, 82, passed away Wednesday, July 23, 2003.
She lived in the Rio Grande area for 27 years.
Mary is preceded in death by her parents, Ernest and Angeline Gilbert and husband, John VanZant.
She is survived by her daughter, Rusty Gregory and husband, Bob of Nacogdoches; grandchildren, John and Danny Gregory, and Cindy Hill; great-grandchildren, Makayla and Robert Hill, Hunter Gregory and the expectant, Gregory twins.

SAN BENITO, TX — Antonio Garcia, 33, passed away at Valley Baptist Medical Center on July 28, 2003.
Survivors include his parents, Ricardo and Guadalupe Garcia of San Benito, TX; former wife of 13 years, Irene Garcia of San Benito; 2 daughters, Amanda and Erica Garica of San Benito; step-daughter, Laura Casandra Gomez of San Benito; 3 brothers, Ricardo (Brenda) Garcia Jr., David Garcia and Martin Garica all of San Bentio, TX; sister, Patricia (Mario) Trevino of San Bentio; maternal grandmother, Olivia Rios of San Benito, Texas.
He is preceeded in death by his paternal grandparents, Samuel and Elisa Garica, maternal grandfather, Jose Rios.

Sylvia Ann Cabrera
HARLINGEN, TX — Sylvia Ann Cabrera, 51, entered into rest on July 27, 2003, after a 7 1/2 year battle with cancer. She was born on July 23, 1952 and was a lifelong resident of Harlingen.
Sylvia was a member of Queen of Peace Catholic Church. She worked as an office manager for Dr. Redmond and Houghston in Harlingen from 1987-2000.
She is survived by Samuel Cabrera, Sr. her husband of 34 years; one son, Samuel Cabrera, Jr. and his wife, Christy, of Harlingen; one daughter, Shannon Lopez, and her husband, Jorge, of Edinburg; grandchildren, Larissa Lanae Cabrera, Jorge Lopez, Jr., and Cody Christian Cabrera; mother, Carmen P. Atkinson, of Harlingen; one brother, Arturo Atkinson (Patricia) of Harlingen; three sisters, Diana Garcia (Alonso), Rosie Atkinson, and Edna Atkinson, all of Harlingen. She is preceded in death by her father, Sigifredo G. Atkinson. She is also survived by numerous nieces and nephews.
Visitation will be held, today, Tuesday, July 29, 2003, from 10 a.m. until 9 p.m. at the Rudy Garza Chapel of Peace with a prayer service to be prayed at 7 p.m.
The funeral procession will depart the Rudy Garza Funeral Home on Wednesday, July 30, 2003 at 10:30 AM for an 11 a.m. Mass of Christian burial at Queen of Peace Catholic Church in Harlingen with Fr Mathias Shanley as the celebrant.
Pallbearers will be Lee Alvarez, Pete Alvarez, Jr., Edward Castro, Edward Perkins, Jaime Alejandro, and Edward Garcia. Honorary pallbearer will be Richard Alvarez.
She will be entombed at the Mausoleum at Mont Meta Memorial Park in San Benito.
Isabel O. Sanchez
LOS FRESNOS, TX — Isabel O. Sanchez, 53, of Los Fresnos, Texas entered into the loving kingdom of Our Lord Jesus Christ on Sunday, July 27, 2003 at Valley Baptist Medical Center of Harlingen, Texas.
She was born in Los Fresnos, Texas on July 8, 1950.
She was a lifetime resident of Los Fresnos, Texas, and was married to her husband "Lolo" for 32 yrs.
She was a devoted mother, wife, friend, and grandmother. Her specialty was teaching with the Los Fresnos Independent School District in the Special Education Department, of which she dedicated 15 years of her life.
She will always be remembered by her family, and friends as a woman of strong will.
Survivors include her husband, Isidoro "Lolo" Sanchez, Sr. of Los Fresnos; daughter, Raquel Sanchez Rodriguez (Alex) of Los Fresnos; 3 sons, Isidoro Sanchez, Jr. (Sylvia) of Harlingen, TX, Ruben Sanchez, Sr. (Melissa) of Los Fresnos, Pablo "Paul" Sanchez of Los Fresnos; 3 sisters, Ninfa Pena of Los Laureles, TX, Ana Maria Sanchez (Jesus) of Los Fresnos, Diana Olivarez of Los Fresnos; 3 brothers, Roy Sotelo (Rosie) of So. Padre Island, David Olivarez of Los Fresnos, Miguel "Mike" Olivarez (Rebecca) of Los Fresnos; 5 grandchildren all of Los Fresnos; Parents, Miguel and Nicanora H. Olivarez of Los Fresnos and numerous nieces and nephews.
Pallbearers will be: Isidoro Sanchez, Jr., Ruben Sanchez, Sr., Paul Sanchez, Jesus Sanchez, Jr., James Sanchez, Mike Olivarez, Jr., Alex Rodriguez, and Alberto Munoz, Sr.
Visitation will begin on Tuesday, July 29, 2003 at 8 a.m. to 9 p.m. with a rosary scheduled to begin at 6 p.m. and a prayer service following immediately there after.
The funeral service is scheduled for Wednesday, July 30, 2003 at St. Benedict Catholic Church at 10 a.m. Interment will follow to Mont-Meta Memorial Park.

Maria Martinez
HARLINGEN, TX — Maria (Gonzales) Martinez departed this world to be with the Lord on Sunday, July 27, 2003. She was very much loved and will be missed by everyone who knew her.
She is survived by her loving husband, Juan Martinez; and children, Jose Garcia, Enedelia Ramirez, Ignacia Villasana, Enrique Gonzales, Israel Gonzales, Lucilla Munoz, Noemi England, Irma Bradshaw, Sylvia Vallejo, and Guadalupe Gonzales.
Maria is preceded in death by her first husband, the late Juan Gonzales and children, Romana Gil, Romulo Gonzlaes, and Diana Villarreal.
Visitation will be from 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. on Wednesday, July 30, 2003 at Garza-Elizondo Funeral Home with a prayer service to be held at 7 p.m. by Pastor Santos Valdez.
