Herndon Aderhold, Jr.

EDINBURG — Herndon Aderhold, Jr., age 84, a long time citrus grower and shipper of tangerines expired at Edinburg Regional Medical Center on Sunday morning, July 6, 2003.

He was born in Anniston, Alabama, on January 9, 1919 and moved to the Valley with his parents in 1924. He graduated from Edinburg High School in 1936 and attended U. T. Austin before enlisting in the Army Air Force in 1941. He served ten years in the Army Air Corp and Air Force, both active and in the reserves.

Aderhold served as President and Director of Magic Valley Electric Cooperative for 47 years, as chairman of the legislative committee of  Texas Electric Cooperatives for 20 years and served many years on the National Association’s legislative committee. He was Past President of the Edinburg Rotary Club, an Elder and a Trustee of the Edinburg First Presbyterian Church, and served for a number of years on the Presbytery’s Minister and his Work Committee.

He was preceded in death by his first wife of forty years, Ann Haralson Aderhold, his second wife, Cathryn Barnett Aderhold, and his father and mother, Herndon and Julia Aderhold.

He is survived by his son, Dr. Herndon Aderhold III and his wife, Dee, of Norman, OK; a daughter, Deborah Ann Aderhold of  Oklahoma City, OK; a step-daughter, Barbara Barnett of Karnes City, TX; two brothers, Dr. Wallace Aderhold and wife, Pat of Alexandria, LA, and S. T. Aderhold and his wife, Jody of Edinburg; a sister, Margaret Williams of Albuquerque, NM; and ten nieces and nephews.

Visitation will be held today, Monday, July 7, 2003 from 3 p.m. to 9 p.m. at Skinner-Silva Funeral Home Chapel on West Samano in Edinburg, with the family present from 4 p.m. to 6 p.m. Funeral services will be held at 4 p.m. on Tuesday, July 8, 2003 at the First Presbyterian Church in Edinburg with Dr. John Davenport officiating. Interment will follow at Hillcrest Memorial Park Cemetery in Edinburg. Graveside military honors will be under the direction of the VFW Post #8788 of McAllen.

For those who wish to give memorials, the family suggests they be made to the First Presbyterian Church, 300 West Cano, Edinburg, TX, or to the Presbyterian Children’s Home, PO Box 14088, Austin, TX. 78714.

Funeral arrangements are entrusted to the care of Skinner-Silva Funeral Home of Edinburg.

Jose A. Garcia

HARLINGEN, TX — Jose A. "Ham" Garcia, 38, entered into rest on Sunday at his residence.

Ham is preceded in death by his parents and grandparents.

He is survived by his longtime partner Rosaura Garza Martinez of Santa Rosa, TX; brother, Raul Garcia of Houston, TX; sisters, Margarita G. Perez of Harlingen, TX, Sue Ellen Garcia of Houston, TX, Alicia Garcia of Harlingen, TX; and numerous aunts, uncles, nieces, nephews and cousins.

Visitation will be held today, Tuesday, July 8, 2003 from 10 a.m. until 9 p.m. at the Rudy Garza Chapel of Angels with a Rosary to be prayed at 7 p.m.

The funeral procession will depart the Rudy Garza Funeral Home on Wednesday, July 9, 2003 for a 10 a.m. Mass of Christian burial at Queen of Peace Catholic Church with Fr. Matt Shanley as the celebrant.

Interment will follow at Ashland Memorial Park Cemetery in Harlingen, TX.

Pallbearers will be Hams’ family and friends.

Funeral arrangements are under the direction of Rudy Garza Funeral Home in Harlingen,  Texas.

Gudelia Flores Trevino

LYFORD/RAYMONDVILLE, TX — Gudelia Flores Trevino, 71, passed away Monday at Retama Manor Nursing Center in Raymondville.

She was preceded in death by her son, Juan Manuel Trevino in 1994, and is survived by two sons, Reynaldo Trevino of Collinsville, Alabama, Raul Trevino of Reynosa, Tamps. Mexico; two daughters, Rosalinda Rodriguez of Stathan, GA, Mirtha Garza of Lyford; four brothers, Jose Maria Flores, Guadalupe Flores, Ramiro Flores, Pablo Flores all of Mercedes; a sister, Ercilia Ramirez of Fredricksburg, OK; also surviving are sixteen grandchildren and twenty-one great-grandchildren.

Visitation will be Tuesday from 11 a.m. until 9 p.m. at the funeral home chapel. A rosary will be prayed at 7 p.m.

Funeral services will be Wednesday at 10 a.m. at Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Mercedes.

Interment will follow at Ebony Grove Cemetery also in Mercedes.

Arrangements have been entrusted to Garcia & Trevino Funeral Home of Mercedes.

Lila Faye Piggott

HARLINGEN, TX — Lila Faye Piggott, born July 19, 1925, in Dows, Iowa, to Fred and Ester Coburn, went to be with the Lord Sunday morning, July 6, 2003.

She is survived by: husband, Charles Piggott, Harlingen; sons, Jimmy Greier, McAllen, Timothy Piggott, Houston; and daughter, Valerie Bates, Port Isabel; brother, Alan Coburn of Houston; and sister, Marilyn Daniels of Corpus Christi; nephew, Alan Harley Coburn of Houston; and nieces, Pam Duke of Corpus Christi and Cindy Fleming of Houston.

Lila had five grandchildren, Rebecca Greier-Horton of Dallas, Steve Greier of Panama City, Florida, Amber Bates of Port Isabel, Seth Piggott of Naples, Florida and Trevor Piggott of Houston.

Lila is also survived by five great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her grandson, Christopher Greier.

Lila piggott was recognized in 2001 for 30 years of volunteer service to Retama Manor.

In 1997 she was awarded a plague for two decades of service for our children by the Darrel B. Hester Juvenile Justice Center.

She was a familiar face in the halls of the hospitals, Retama Manor, Golden Palms, Good Samaritan, Youth Boot Camp and the Women’s and Juvenile’s sections of the Cameron County Jail, where se faithfully and consistently spread the Gospel of Jesus Christ.

She will be greatly missed.

Funeral services were held Monday afternoon at Restlawn Memorial Park.

Pastor Steve Hyde of Lighthouse Assembly of God of Port Isabel officiated.

Funeral arrangements were under the direction of Trinity Funeral Chapel 1217 South F. Street Harlingen.

Jose Del Carmen Martinez (Carmelo)

SAN BENITO, TX — Jose Del Carmen Martinez (Carmelo) 59, passed away Saturday June 28, 2003, at V.B.M.C. Mr. Martinez was a native of San Benito.

He is survived by his brothers and sisters, Maria Luisa Martinez, Juan Martinez, Pedro G. Martinez, Daniel G. Martinez, Maria Guadalupe Molina, and Julia Martinez.

In his lifetime he touched so many lives. He will be missed and never forgotten, take time to remember him.

Private services will be held at a later date under the direction of Trinity Funeral Chapels, 1217 S. F Street, Harlingen,  Texas.

Margaret Flora Whitson Stephens

WESLACO, TX — Mrs. Margaret Flora Whitson Stephens, 85, widow of former Mayor John J. (Joe) Stephens, passed away Monday, July 7, 2003 at John Knox Medical Center in Weslaco after a lengthy illness.

She was the last living daughter of Mrs. Flora Ann Penick, who moved to Weslaco from Plainview and Cisco with her four daughters to join her husband in 1921.

Mrs. Stephens graduated from Weslaco High School, was a long time member of the First United Methodist Church and Chancel Choir. She was also a past member of the Garden Club, Home Demonstration Club and was a volunteer at the Knapp Memorial Hospital for many years. She was also a member of the Knapp Auxiliary where she served as President.

She was preceded in death by her husband, who was affectionately known as "Petunia Joe"; her mother, Flora Ann Penick; her son, Mr. Craig L. Stephens; her grandson, Scott A. Stephens; and her three sisters, Mrs. Mauren Valliant, Mrs. Lucille Barhart and Mrs. Dorothy Grasshoff.

Survivors include her son, Karl A. Stephens of Indianapolis, IN; five grandchildren, Ms. Erin H. Stephens, Mr. Jay J. Stephens, both of Dallas; Mr. Karl A. Stephens, Jr. of Lewisville, Mr. John C. Stephens of Pittsburgh, PA and Mr. Frank L. Stephens of Port Chester, NY. Also surviving are two great-grandchildren, Adam C. Stephens and Michael A. Stephens, both of Pittsburgh, PA.

A Memorial Service will be held Thursday, July 10, 2003 at 10 a.m. at the First United Methodist Church in Weslaco. Officiating the service will be Rev. Myron Ricketts, Pastor of the First United Methodist Church in Weslaco.

Friends who wish may make memorial contributions to the Chancel Choir c/o First United Methodist Church, 520 S. Illinois, Weslaco, TX 78596.

Funeral arrangements are under the direction of McCaleb Funeral Home in Weslaco.

Eleodoro Levrier

LA FERIA, TX — Eleodoro Levrier, was born in Brownsville, TX on August 23, 1914 to Fulgencio and Maria Otilia Levrier.

He was preceded in death by his parents Mr. and Mrs. Fulgencio Levrier; oldest son, Eleodoro Levrier, Jr. and a brother, Fulgencio Levrier, Jr.

He is survived by his loving wife of sixty years, Paula Tomelloso Levrier; brother, Alfredo Levrier of Corpus Christi; daughter-in-law, Olga Levrier of Huron, CA. Also surviving are his children, Guadalupe (Darlene) Levrier of Dixon, CA, Roberto (Oralia) Levrier, Luis (Eva) Levrier, Francisco (Mary) Levrier, Maria Otilia (Domingo) Castor all of La Feria,  Texas, Andres (Grace) Levrier of Austin, TX, Mary Jane Rivera of Angleton,  Texas, John (Belia) Levrier, George (Enedelia) Levrier and Maria (Ruben) Diaz of La Feria,  Texas.

Also surviving Mr. Levrier are his 36 grandchildren and 31 great-grandchildren.

The funeral procession will depart the Rudy Garza Palms Chapel today, 1:45 p.m. for a 2 p.m. Mass of Christian burial at St. Francis Xavier Catholic Church.

Interment will follow at Restlawn Memorial Park Cemetery in La Feria, TX.

Pallbearers will be his grandsons, Robert Levrier, Jr., Marcos Levrier, Steven James Levrier, Paul Anthony Castor, Raul E. Rivera, Jr., and Ruben Roel Zambrano. Honorary pallbearers will be Christopher Levrier of Huron, CA., Michael Levrier of Dixon, CA., Andres Levrier, Jr., of Austin, TX and John Gregory Levrier, Jr of Wichita Falls, TX.

Funeral arrangements are under the direction of Rudy Garza Funeral Home in La Feria,  Texas.

Maria Del Rosario Perez

RAYMONDVILLE, TX — Maria Del Rosario Perez passed away on July 8, 2003 at Retama Manor in Raymondville.

Maria Del Rosario Perez was born July 28, 1933 in Mexico City to Jesus and Juanita Perez and they preceded her in death.

She has gone to be with her God who she had great faith in even during her illness.

She is survived by her daughter, Olga (Tony) Fadely and son, Jose De Jesus Perez of Mission, TX.

She is also survived by her beloved grandchildren, Ricardo Cruz Jr., Raquel (Joe) Rojas, Tony II, Bryan, Bobby, Jennifer, Beth Fadely, Jesus Jr. (Wendy), Marco Antonio, Cesar Lorenzo Perez; great grandchildren, Ricardo III, Rochelle Rae Cruz, Cristian Alexander, Jennifer, Joe Michael Rojas, Nicolas, Viviana Perez, Emily, Mackenzie Haddon who always put a beautiful smile on her face; sisters, Dolores, Guadalupe, Angelina; and brother, Miguel Perez, Mr. and Mrs. Filomeno Galvan (aunt and uncle), numerous nieces and nephews.

A special thanks to the staff of Retama Manor who showed her care and love during her lengthy stay and her special friend, Maria Gutierrez.

Pallbearers will be her grandsons, Ricardo Cruz II, Chuey, Marco, Cesar Perez, Compadre Lolo Morales and Rosendo Rodriguez. Honorary pallbearers will be her great-grandsons, Rick Cruz III, Cristian Alexander Rojas, Nicoles Perez and Joe Michael Rojas.

Funeral service will be held Thursday 10 a.m., July 10, 2003 at Our Lady of Guadalupe Catholic Church. Burial will follow at the Raymondville Memorial Park Cemetery.

A rosary will be held today, Wednesday 7 p.m., at Duddlesten Chapel.

Funeral arrangements are under the direction of Duddlesten Funeral Home.

Soledad E. Velasquez

HARLINGEN, TX — Soledad E. Velasquez, 63, entered into rest on Monday at Valley Baptist Medical Center.

Mrs. Velasquez was a 43 year resident of Harlingen and is preceded in death by her parents, Miguel and Teodora Delgado Elizarraraz; and her son, Cruz Velasquez, Jr.

Mrs. Velasquez was employed for 18 years at the Sheraton Hotel and at the H.C.I.S.D. for four years.

She is survived by her loving husband of 43 years Cruz P. Velasquez of Harlingen, TX; sisters, Consuelo E. Perez of CA, Juanita Elizarraraz of MX; brother, Alfonso Elizarraraz of Harlingen; sons, Pete (Hilda) Velasquez, Martin Velasquez and David (Cindy) Velasquez all of Harlingen; daughters, Janie (Robert) Velasquez of Harlingen, Mary (Rene) Velasquez of La Feria, TX, Rosie (Orlando) Casanova of Harlingen, Ada Canales of Harlingen and Sandy V. Puga of Combes, TX. She is also survived by 19 grandchildren and 5 great-grandchildren.

Visitation will be held today, Wednesday, July 9, 2003 from 10 a.m. until 9 p.m. at the Rudy Garza Chapel of Peace with a Rosary to be prayed at 7 p.m.

The funeral procession will depart the Rudy Garza Funeral Home on, Thursday, July 10, 2003 at 9:30 a.m. for a 10 a.m. Mass of Christian burial at Immaculate Heart of Mary Catholic Church. Interment will follow at Restlawn Memorial Park Cemetery in La Feria, TX.

Pallbearers will be Pete Velasquez, Martin Velasquez, David Velasquez, Michael Lee Velasquez, Jose Martin Velasquez, Rene Sanchez and Christopher Rene Sanchez.

Funeral arrangements are under the direction of Rudy Garza Funeral Home in Harlingen.

Sabas Contreras

HARLINGEN, TX — Sabas Contreras, 80, entered into rest on July 6, 2003 in Harlingen,  Texas. Sabas was a loyal employee of Varmicon Industries from1956 until he retired in 1987.

He is preceded in death by his wife, Maria Para Contreras.

He is survived by one son, Jose Luis Contreras of Harlingen; three grandchildren, Juanita Contreras of Houston, Abraham Contreras and Joel Contreras of Harlingen. He is also survived by one great-grandson, Brandon Alsea Contreras; two brothers, Nicolas Contreras, Refugio Contreras; and a sister, Luz Maria Contreras.

On behalf of the family, no services will be held.

Arrangements are under the direction of Rudy Garza Funeral Home in Harlingen.
