Maria H. Ramirez
Dec. 7, 1937 – June 2, 2003
LOS FRESNOS, TX — The greatest gift God ever gave us, our mother Maria Hinojosa Ramirez has been returned to her author and creator. After a courageous and defiant battle against her diabetes complications Maria H. Ramirez is now free of physical pain and suffering. Mrs. Ramirez entered into the Kingdom of our Lord Jesus Christ on Monday, June 2, 2003 at St. Luke’s Episcopal Hospital of Houston, Texas. Maria Ramirez was born in Raymondville, Texas on December 7, 1937 and lived most of her life in Los Fresnos.
She is preceded in death by her parents, Vicente and Severa Hinojosa; and her sister, Cleotilde Hinojosa.
She is survived by her husband, Uvistano Ramirez; her daughter, Diana Maria Ramirez; and her son, Mario Alberto Ramirez; also by her sisters, Maria Guadalupe Ortiz and Ignacia Hinojosa; her two nephews, Jose Isabel Ortiz, Jr., and Adan Ortiz (Ann, Whitney and William) also survive her.
Maria’s life was simple: church, family and work. She was a member of St. Cecilia’s Catholic Church and attended mass in spite of her physical discomfort at times. How Maria loved the Holy Mass and how it lifted her spirits! Throughout her life, Maria worked at the Laureles Cotton Gin, the Brownsville Navigation District and at Water District No. 6. To her family, Maria was the backbone. She was giver of many gifts: nourishment, guidance, advice, and lots of love. She liked to cook and to have her loved ones sit at her table to eat with her.
As Maria touched our lives, there are those who touched hers. We thank all of the friends who called her on the telephone, greeted her at church, or played bingo with her. We wish to acknowledge Maria’s dialysis nurse, Odee Longoria of the Watson Wise Dialysis Clinic. Odee became her confidant and friend; they shared her illness and each others lives. We are forever grateful to Dr. Joseph Dougherty who always gave Maria comfort and hope; somehow he made her feel as if she was his only patient. We acknowledge the doctors and staff at St. Luke’s Episcopal Hospital who rallied around Maria in her final battle.
Mother we miss you dearly. Because of you we were born. Because of you we are.
Visitation will begin at 10 a.m. to 1:45 p.m. at St. Cecilia Catholic Church. The celebration of her life will begin at 2 p.m. on Wednesday, June 4, 2003, her interment will follow to Los Cuates Cemetery in Los Fresnos, Texas.
