Nolan Richard Flynn
MERCEDES, TX — Nolan Richard Flynn, 68, passed away May 20, 2003 at Knapp Medical Center in Weslaco.
Nolan moved from Corpus Christi to Mercedes in 1992 and married Sue Hanks in July 1993.
Nolan served in the U.S. Air Force. Nolan retired from John Deere Financing in 1994, after 25 years.
He was a member of the Weslaco Elks Lodge and was an avid fisherman who loved the outdoors.
Surviving Nolan are his wife, Sue Flynn of Mercedes; daughters, Pamela (John) Carlson of The Colony, TX, Amy (Frank) Ivy of Lewisville, TX; step-daughters, Patricia L. Stone of Mesa, AZ, Melissa Griffin of Houston, TX; step-son, Michael (April) Weaver of McAllen, TX and four grandchildren, Holly Carlson, John Carlson, Haley Ivy, and Parker Weaver. Also surviving are his brothers, Floyd (Winnie) of Jonesboro, AR, Jimmy (Carolyn) Flynn of Arab, AL; sisters, Shirley (Jerry) Guiltner of Oklahoma City, OK, Linda Kay (Phil) Bohn of Provo, Utah and Dorothy White of Florida.
Visitation will be held today, Friday, May 23, 2003 from 4 p.m. to 8 p.m. with the family present from 5 p.m. to 6:30 p.m.
Funeral services will be held Saturday, May 24, 2003 at 10 a.m. at McCaleb Funeral Home Chapel at 900 W. 4th St. in Weslaco with the Rev. Dr. Johnathan Becker, Pastor of the First Baptist Church in Weslaco as the officiant. Interment will follow at Ebony Grove Cemetery in Mercedes.
Serving as pallbearers will be Glenn Newby, Howard Bailey, Jerry Guiltner, Kevin Flynn, Jerry Chambers, and Ray Hyde.

Vicente Arredondo
LOS FRESNOS, TX — On Thursday, May 22, 2003, Vicente Arredondo, 76, a life time resident of the Los Fresnos area, passed away at the Brownsville Medical Center.
Mr. Arredondo, a loving husband, father, brother, and grandfather is survived by his wife, Juana R. Arredondo of Los Fresnos; 2 daughters, Criselda A. Reyes (Ernesto) of Dickinson and Armandina A. Cortinas (Antonio) of Houston; 6 sons, Juan Ramon Arredondo (Isabel) of League City, Alfredo Arredondo (Idolina) of Harlingen, Hector Arredondo (Sarah) of Baytown, Vicente Arredondo Jr. of Los Fresnos, Valentin Arredondo (Noemi) of Dickinson, and Eloy Arredondo (Valarie) of Los Fresnos; 1 sister, Viviana Leal of Brownsville; 3 brothers, Marcos Arredondo of Los Fresnos, Lazaro Arredondo of Los Fresnos and Esteban Arredondo, Jr. of Ft. Worth; 29 grandchildren and 36 great grandchildren.
Mr. Arredondo was a Veteran and a member of the American Legion 2410 and the V.F.W. Post 205. Rosary Services were held Friday evening at the Thomae Funeral Chapel on Bowie St. in San Benito and Funeral services will be Saturday, May 24, 2003 at 3 p.m. at St. Cecilia’s Catholic Church in Los Fresnos with burial at Los Cuates Cemetery in Los Fresnos with pallbearers being: Leonardo Cortinas, Leroy Arredondo, Eloy Arredondo, Jr., Ernie A. Reyes, Antonio Cortinas, III, and Edward Arredondo.

Valdemar G. Lira
HOUSTON, TX — Valdemar G. Lira, 72, died on Wednesday, May 21, 2003 at his residence.
He is preceded in death by his wife, Maria Magdalena Vechio Lira. Survivors include his son, Valdemar Lira Jr. of Houston; a daughter, Cecilia Adela Lira of Houston; one brother, Rogelio Lira of Nevasota, Texas; numerous nephews and nieces.
Visitation was held from 10 a.m. to 9 p.m. with Rosary held, Friday, May 23, 2003 at 7 p.m. at De Leon Funeral home of Pharr, Texas. Service will be held today, Saturday, May 24, 2003 at 10 a.m. at St. Margaret Catholic Church of Pharr. Burial will follow at La Puerta Cemetery at Rio Grande City under the direction of De Leon Funeral home of Pharr.
Arthur W. Monnig
HARLINGEN, TX — Arthur Winston Monnig of St. Louis and Harlingen, Texas passed away on Wednesday, April 23, 2003. Mr. Monnig was born November 6th, 1916. He died from complications from a stroke.
Arthur Winston Monnig was a long time business man, doing heating and air conditioning, radio and television repair. He was a charter member of the Allied Racing Association and the Crestwood Elks Club. In addition, he was a member of the Missouri Pilots Association, President of the Organ Guild and a member of the Commemorative Air Force (formerly the Confederate Air Force) in Harlingen, Texas where his accomplishments earned him the title of Chief Mechanic on the B-29 Bomber FIFI.
Among the survivors are his children, Arthur L. Monnig, Carol A. Baker, the late David W. Monnig, Patricia M. Kuehner, Diana L. Gerheauser and Michele I. Monnig; stepchildren, Linda Rhodes, Michael Arent and Helen Conlon; grandchildren and great grandchildren; and sister, Jeanette Lehn of California.
A Celebration of Life will be in an Open House at the Elks Club for Elk members and non-Elk friends and family. Celebration will be held on Tuesday, May 27, 2003 at 6 p.m. to 9 p.m. at 1426 South Commerce in Harlingen, Texas.
William A. Tilden
SAN BENITO, TX — William A. Tilden, 78, a resident of San Benito since 1951 passed away on Thursday, May 22, 2003 at the Valley Baptist Hospital.
Mr. Tilden is lovingly survived by his wife, Patricia of San Benito; and sons, Michael of San Benito and James Tilden of Ft. Worth; also 2 daughters, Ann Johnston of Ft. Worth and Mary Robinson of San Benito and 5 grandchildren and 9 great grandchildren.He had served his country in W W II as a member of the U.S. Marine Corps. Memorial services will be held on Sunday, May 25, 2003 at 7 p.m. at the Thomae Funeral Home Chapel at 701 N. Bowie St., San Benito, TX.
There will be a private interment at Mont Meta Memorial Park. The family has requested that in lieu of flowers those wishing to do so may make memorial gifts to the Catholic War Veterans or to a charity of ones choice. OLMITO, TX — Elida G. Atkinson, 61, of Olmito, Texas passed away on May 24, 2004 at Valley Baptist Medical Center in Harlingen.
She was born February 22, 1942 in San Benito, Texas to Santiago and Josefina Gloria Guajardo.
She is survived by her loving familly, husband, Ramiro G. Patricia C. Maston
HARLINGEN, TX — Patricia Maston, 81, passed away on Monday, May 26, 2003 at Valley Baptist Medical Center in Harlingen, Texas.
She was a retired Medical Secretary for the original Radiologist in Harlingen. She was president in 1976 of the Ladies Auxilary Texas Firearms Association.
Patricia Maston grew up in the First Methodist Church of Harlingen, then at the present time she was a member of the First United Methodist Church in San Benito.
She is survived by her husband, Lewis Maston of San Benito, Texas; three children, Frances Johnson (Norm) of Anchronage, Alaska, Louise Cooper (Selwyn) of San Antonio, Texas; Edward (Annete) of Shreeport, L.A.; nine grandchildren and twelve great great grandchildren; one brother, Gene Cockrill (Pat) of Harlingen, Texas.
Memorial services will be held Wednesday, May 28, 2003 at 4 p.m. at First United Methodist Church of San Benito.
In lieu of flowers donations may be made to the First United Methodist Church in San Benito.

SAN BENITO, TX — Maria Luisa Esparza Ramirez, 72, passed away at Valley Baptist Medical Center on Sunday, May 25, 2003.
She was born in El Ranchito, Texas and had been a lifetime resident of both El Ranchito and San Benito areas.
Mrs. Ramirez was a housewife and was very active and involved with Our Lady Queen of the Universe Catholic Church.
Survivors include her sons, Francisco (Felita) Ramirez of Grapevine, Texas, Reynaldo (Beatrice) Ramirez, of San Benito, Alberto Ramirez of Holly Lake, Texas, Leo (Leticia) Ramirez of San Benito, and Gustavo (Lupina) Ramirez of Brownsville, Texas; daughters, Leonor (Amin) Vaid of Coppell, Texas, Mickey (Bill) Corcoran of McAllen, Texas, Celeste Ramirez of Brownsville, Texas, and Mary Lou (Richard) Torres of Ft. Worth, Texas; special friend and care provider, Cora Gonzalez. She is also survived by her brothers and sister,Dionicio, Romeo, Guillermo, Overlin, Raul, Carlos, Roman, Celeste and Rafael; grandchildren, Rocky Ramirez, Lilliana and Eduardo Vidaurri, Ray Ramirez III, Andrea Ramirez, Leo Ramirez, Ismail Vaid, Laura Micaela and Erin Marie Corcoran, Gena Lisa Lowry and Walter Lowry, Carlos Benavides, Micael Jason Benavides, Vanessa Benavides, Willie Benavides, Mia Rae Torres, Daniel Duran, Taylor Torres, and Aliana Torres; great grandchildren, Darren and Dennis Lowry and Kennedy Leonor Benavides.
Mrs. Ramirez was preceded in death by her husband, Reynaldo O. Ramirez; mother, Maria Luisa Esparza and by brothers and sister, twin sister,Guillermina Escobar, Celeste, Alberto, Luis, Elfago and Anita.
Visitation will be held today, Tuesday, May 27, 2003 from 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. with a Holy Rosary being held at 7 p.m. at the San Benito Funeral Home Chapel.

HARLINGEN, TX — Joe W. Barton, 79, was born in Carter County, Oklahoma, January 1924.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Charles Lee and Iva Lee Barton; and brother, Ben.
He is survived by his wife, Helen of Port Isabel, TX; son, Jack Lee Barton; grandson, James Lee and his son, Charles Albert Barton and wife, Pamela Lynn; grandchildren, Cody Lee and Jayda Briann of Port La Vaca, Texas; his sister, Jean and husband, Paul of Las Cruces, New Mexico; and sister-in-law, Pauline Barton of Branson, MO.

Ofelia "Ofie" Furney
BAYTOWN, TX — Ofelia "Ofie" Furney, 70, passed away Sunday, May 25, 2003 at San Jacinto Methodist Hospital.
Ofie was a volunteer at San Jacinto Methodist Hospital, and a long time member of Westminster Presbyterian Church.
Ofie was preceded in death by her husband, William H. "Bill" Furney.
She is survived by her daugthers, Loretta Gardner and husband, Stan, Dianna Furney, and Brenda Schultz and husband, Eddie; grandsons, Christopher McCulloch, Gregory and Jeffrey Schultz; sister, Connie Garcia; brothers, Joe Valdez and Eddie Valdez; numerous nieces and nephews.
There will be a memorial service at Westminster Presbyterian Church, 7600 Bayway Drive, Baytown, TX on Wednesday, May 28, 2003, at 11 a.m., with Wendy Bailey officiating.

Maria Antonia Crisler
SAN BENITO — Maria Antonia "Toni" Arellano Crisler passed into the hands of our Lord on Sunday at Christus Spohn Hospital in Corpus Christi after a long and brave battle with cancer.
She was a loving and dedicated teacher, Mother, Grandmother, and friend, not only to her own children, but also to the countless other children whose lives she touched throughout her life.
She is survived by her children, James A. Crisler of Corpus Christi, Felix and Deborah Moreno of San Benito, Cathy L. Crisler of Corpus Christi, Roland and Janice Buitron of San Benito, Michael and Denise Woods of Houston; grandsons, Kevin Moreno, Bryan Moreno, Baby Boy Woods due in September, Moochie, her faithful companion and loyal pet; brothers and sisters, Ernestine Fincher and husband (Bobby) of Grand Praire, Jesus Arrellano of San Benito, Celia Gentry, PhD. of Weslaco, Aurora Mona Pelache and husband (Peter) of San Benito, Emeterio Arellano Jr. and wife (Yolanda) of San Benito, Rosie Arrellano Knight and husband (John) of Windfield, Ill., Gilbert Arellano and wife (Denise) of Fort Worth, and may nieces and nephews.
