SAN BENITO, TX — Tomas G. Salazar, 89, passed away Wednesday, April 7, 2004 at Harlingen Medical Center. He was born in San Benito, Tx. and resided there all his life.
He was a Veteran of World War II and felt very proud to have served his Country. He liked to work in his yard and grow plants to distribute among his nieces and nephews.
He is survived by many nieces and nephews.
Maria Caraveo Gonzales
LOZANO, TX — Maria Caraveo Gonzales, 87 of Lozano, Texas entered into the eternal kingdom of Our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ, after a lengthly illness, surrounded in the loving embrace of her family on April 6, 2004 at her residence in Lozano, Texas.
She was born on October 8, 1916 to Fernando, and Teodora Garza Caraveo in Las Yesca, TX. And is a lifetime resident of Lozano, Texas, a member of St. Helen’s Catholic Church of Rio Hondo, and St. Vincent De Pau in Lozano, TX.
She was a devoted wife, beloved mother, grandmother, and great grandmother, that will be deeply missed, but not forgotten.
Eddie Randall Akins
HARLINGEN, TX — Eddie Randall "Randy" Akins, 54, passed away Monday, April 5, 2004 at Brownsville Medical Center. Randy was born October 16, 1949 in Oklahoma City, OK to Melvin and Frankie Akins. He was an avid birder and raised many different types of birds.
Randy is survived by his wife, Maria D. Perales; sons, Johnny Akins, Sonny Akins and Justin Akins. Memorial services will be held Thursday, April 8, 2004 at 3:00 p.m. at Buck Ashcraft Funeral Home Chapel with Reverend David Mann officiating.

Patricia Stockwell
Patricia Cook (Dubuque) Stockwell, passed away on April 3, 2004, she was formerly of Brookline, and Leverett, MA and San Benito, TX.
Beloved wife of Donald M. Stockwell. Loving mother of George W. and Dorothy Cook of Scituate and Alison and Stephen Kyne of Shrewsbury. Former wife of the late George W. Cook. Loving daughter of the late Gilbert and Mary Rose Dubuque. Sisiter of Sylvia Tramonte of Woburn, Robert Dubuque of Walpole and the late Gilbert Dubuque of Billerica and Eugenia Burchill of Franklin. Dear grandmother of six, great-grandmother of three and leaves many nieces and nephews.
Interment will be private.
A memorial Mass will be held at a later date to celebrate Pat’s life. In lieu of flowers a donation in Pat’s name may be made to The Association of Marion Helpers in Stockbridge, MA 0126-0004.
Emma G. Rodriguez
MERCEDES — Emma G. Rodriguez, 79, passed away Saturday night at Knapp Medical Center in Weslaco.
She was preceded in death by her son, Jorge Rodriguez in 1992 and her husband, Adolfo Rodriguez in 1994 and is survived by a son, Adolfo Rodriguez, Jr. of Mercedes; four daughters, Maria Garza, Marta Gonzalez, Sylvia Garcia of Mercedes, Mine Castro of San Juan; two brothers, Alberto Garza of Mercedes, Noe Garza of Blissfield, Michigan; also surviving are 14 grandchildren, 28 great-grandchildren and 2 great-great-grandchildren.
Chapel services will be held Tuesday at 10 a.m. at Garcia & Trevino Funeral Home. Interment will follow at Ebony Grove Cemetery in Mercedes.
Arrangements have been entrusted to Garcia & Trevino Funeral Home of Mercedes.
Fannie Sue Hockaday
LA FERIA, TX — Fannie Sue Hockaday, 60, of La Feria entered into eternal rest at her home surrounded by family on Thursday, February 26, 2004 after a long battle with lung cancer. She was born on June 3, 1943 in Mercedes to Elmer M. and Faye Lorena Jones of Santa Rosa.
She grew up as Suzy Jones in Santa Rosa. Suzy lived in Santa Rosa for 52 years, and then moved to La Feria. Suzy spent many hours working on projects such as shell mirrors, canback chairs, or shelling pecans for her famous Pecan Pies.
Her recent passion was sewing handmade ornaments. Suzy as well as her mother and sisters have made Christmas ornaments for more than 40 years.
Suzy was a member of Santa Rosa Methodist Church and Order of Eastern Star Chapter #641. She received a Diploma from the American Society of Clinical Pathologist; she was a Certified Phlebotomy Technician. Suzy enjoyed working with friends from Sears and Roebuck, Rio Grande Savings and Loan, United Blood Service, and her last place of employment with Valley Baptist Medical Center.
Suzy’s compassion, caring, honesty, and respect for others is a shining example to others of how all of us should be as human beings.
Suzy’s greatest love was her grandson, Nicholas A. Hockaday, 5. Suzy wanted to show him all her large collection of Trains every Christmas. Suzy leaves all her warmth, love and strengths behind for all of us to feel in her new home above. She is loved by all and will be missed beyond belief.
She is survived by her loving, caring daughter, Martha S. Hockaday; her grandson, Nicholas A. Hockaday; two sisters, Bernice (Bert) Coleman of La Feria and Angie Hawley of Hondo, TX; and numerous nieces, nephews, and cousins.
Memorial services will be held Saturday, February 28, 2004 at 10 a.m., at the Santa Rosa Methodist Church with Reverend Jerry Parks officiating.
For those desiring to do so, memorials may be made to the Santa Rosa Methodist Church, Sandi Jo Funk Hospice, or Order of Eastern Star Chapter #641.

HARLINGEN, TX — Virgil V. Garcia 79, of Harlingen entered into rest Monday, February 23, 2004.
He is survived by his loving wife of 52 years, Octavia Garcia; 2 brothers, O.A. Garcia and Vel Garcia all of Harlingen. He is also survived by numerous nephews and nieces.
Mr. Garcia served United States Army/Air Force during WWII.

Funeral service will be held on Wednesday, February 25, 2004 at 9:30 a.m. at the church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints, 401 North Jackson in Edinburg with interment to follow at Hillcrest Memorial Park in Edinburg. La Feria — Leticia Z.G. Perez, 38, passed away on Thursday, February 19, 2004. Letty was a lifelong resident of La Feria.
She was preceded in death by her mother, Avelina; grandparents, Telesforo and Herlinda Rodriguez and grandmother Felipa Zavala.
She is survived by her husband of eight years Miguel Perez; her three wonderful children Cynthia Collen (Lloyd), Robert Anthony and Kassy Gonzalez; sisters, Sofia and Belinda (Maricela); brothers, Randy (Margaret) and George (Hermilia), and her father Guadalupe (Maria) Zavala.
Visitation will be held today, Sunday, February 22, 2004 from 1 p.m. until 9 p.m. at the Rudy Garza Palms Funeral Chapel. Funeral services will be held on Monday, February 23, 2004 at 10 a.m. at the Rudy Garza Palms Funeral Chapel. Interment will follow at La Capilla Cemetery in Santa Rosa, TX.
Pallbearers will be Robert A. Gonzalez, Randy Zavala, George Zavala, Gilbert Villanueva, Lloyd Warner and Alfredo Zavala, Jr.
Letty loved Life. She was spontaneous and carefree. She will be greatly missed and always remembered.

Helen Spicer
LA FERIA, TX — Helen Marie Petty Spicer of La Feria, Texas went to be with our Lord on February 18, 2004 at the age of 97. Helen was born in Sloan, Iowa on May 13, 1906.
She was preceded in death by her parents, E.F. Shannon and Florence Aleta Nelson Shannon; two brothers, Charles E. Shannon and Harold A. Shannon.
She is survived by one sister, Dorothy Bazar Gurley, Weslaco, Texas; one son, Charles Eugene (Annibell) Petty, Luling, Texas; two step daughters, Sharon Gail Faubion, Flower Buff, Texas, and Suzanne Marie (Ted) Vides, Miami, Florida; one step-son, John Anthony Spicer, Houston, Texas; one foster son, Raul Ramos Martinez, Albany Kentucky; 15 grandchildren, 23 great grandchildren, and 5 great-great grandchildren.
Grandma we love you and we miss you. We sit here today and long to hear your laughter and feel your touch. The last days we spent with you were the most wonderful days of our lives. They were the hardest but the most special. Grandma watch over us while we wait till the day we can be together again. Love Raul, Michael, Michelle, Jessica, Sharon, George, and Suzie.
Visitation will be held on Saturday, February 21, 2004 from 8:00 a.m. until 1:30 p.m. at the Rudy Garza Palms Chapel in La Feria.
Funeral services will be Saturday, February 21, 2004 at 3:00 p.m. at United Methodist Church of La Feria. Interment will follow at Restlawn Memorial Park in La Feria. Pallbearers will be Roger Petty, James Petty, Troy Petty, Michael Martinez, Shane Scammell, Ken Button, Raul Martinez and George Bonk. Honorary pallbearers will be Wayne Allen, Steven Ybanez, and Damian Vazquez.

Gabriel T. Silva
South Bend, IN — Gabriel T. Silva, 62 years old, residing on Clara Avenue, South Bend, passed away at 10:10 a.m. on Wednesday, February 18, 2004, at his residence after a courageous battle with cancer.
Mr. Silva was born on February 23, 1941, in La Feria, TX to the late Tomas and Petra (Trevino) Silva. He lived in South Bend for the past 38 years. On March 17, 1961, in La Feria, TX, he married the former Dominga Martinez who survives.
Along with his loving wife of 43 years, Dominga, survivors include: five daughters, Noelia (Kevin) Sanders of Lakeville, Mary (Kevin) Fuchs of Lakeville, Norma (Robert) Hennesey of South Bend, Sylvia (John) Horvath of South Bend, and Nelfa (Chad) Newport of South Bend; 13 grandchildren; four sisters, Lucia Leija, Tomasa Trevino, Rosa Jimenez, and Petra Garza, all of Texas; and one brother, Lupe Silva of Texas.
Mr. Silva retired from KoKoKu Wire Industries, South Bend where he was involved with the machine maintenance. Mr. Silva was extremely knowledgeable with machinery and was mechanically inclined. As a hobby, he enjoyed working on cars and helped many people in doing so.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Saturday, February 21, 2004 at the St. Jude Catholic Church, 19704 Johnson Road, South Bend. Rev. Derrick Sneyd will officiate. Graveside services and burial will follow at Southlawn Cemetery, South Bend.
Friends may visit with the family from 3-8 p.m., on Friday, February 20th, at the Palmer Funeral Home-Guisinger Chapel, 3718 S. Michigan Street, South Bend, where a rosary will be held at 7:30 p.m.

Gilberto Cavazos
MERCEDES, TX — Gilberto Cavazos, 61, passed away Tuesday at his residence in Mercedes.
He is survived by his wife, Irene Cavazos of Mercedes; four sons, Antonio Cavazos of Ft. Worth, Gilberto Cavazos, Jr. of Mercedes, Tomas Cavazos of Monett, MO and Juan Cavazos of Sinton, TX; three daughters, Emilia Paredes of Mercedes, Petra Carpenter of Ft. Worth and Maria Huerta of Mercedes; two brothers, Rafael Cavazos of La Mesa, TX and Leonardo Cavazos of Weslaco; one sister, Inez Ibarra of Mercedes.
Also surviving are 15 grandchildren.
Alejandro Cantu
HARLINGEN, TX — Alejandro (Alex) Cantu, 51, passed away on Sunday, February 15, 2004, at St. Luke Episcopal Hospital in Houston, TX. Our beloved brother, Alex went home to be with our Lord. He was born January 3, 1953 to Adelaido Olvera Cantu and Ramona Martinez Cantu.
Alex attended the Rio Hondo I.S.D. and graduated in 1972. He served in the U.S. Army for 14 years with tours in Fort Sam Houston, TX, Ft. Hood, TX and Germany. He lived in Harlingen most of his life.
He is preceded in death by both parents; a brother, Alberto Cantu in September 1997; and a nephew, Bobby Gomez in October 2002. Alex will be dearly missed by his family and friends.
