Consuelo Rios Cisneros
MCALLEN — Consuelo (Chelo) Cisneros, a beautiful and strong mother at 91 years of age, entered into the Kingdom of Heaven on November 26, 2003 surrounded by family and loved ones.
Grandma Chelo, as she was known to her 16 grandchildren, was born in General Teran, N.L., Mexico, on July 12, 1912 to Aurelio and Maria (Ayala) Rios. One of eighteen children, Consuelo learned the traits of an entrepreneur from her merchant father. Her brother, Abraham, moved to Raymondville and started a boot repair shop in the back of his house in 1925, and this small business became the world-famous Rios Boot Company. That Abraham was in Raymondville was the reason that Consuelo came up to visit frequently. There in Raymondville, she met Raul E. Cisneros, a native Texan whose merchant family (Calvillo and Cisneros) had been in South Texas for several generations and operated grocery stores. On October 27, 1935, history was made as Consuelo and Raul were married, and in 1943, Grandma Chelo opened up the Victory Store, a grocery store which was eventually renamed Raul Cisneros & Sons.
Throughout her entire life, Grandma Chelo was a great historian, offered up the best advice, and was an infinite well-spring of love, living to serve the Lord and her family. We will miss her dearly, but we will always cherish the memories and the family stories she passed on to the next generations.
Survivors include her sister, Manuela Rios Saucedo, Ofelia Rios Rodriguez, all from Raymondville; her youngest brother, Guillermo Rios, of San Marcos, TX; her sons, Raul (Coy) (Beatriz), Raymondville, Robert (Loida), Boerne, Rodolfo (Sandra), Weslaco; daughters, Rosalva (Juan) Gonzales, Harlingen, Rebecca (Homer) Jasso, McAllen, and Ruby (Bruce) Casteel, San Antonio; including 16 grandchildren, and 9 great-grandchildren.
A service will be held at 7 p.m. on Friday at Bethel Methodist Church in Raymondville and funeral services will be on Saturday at 4 p.m. at Bethel Methodist Church in Raymondville.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to La Santisima Trinidad Iglesia Metodista Unida in Weslaco or Bethel Methodist Church in Raymondville.
Duddlesten Funeral Home in Raymondville is in charge of arrangements.
