Doris Johnston
HARLINGEN, TX — Doris Allene Johnston, 83, passed away Wednesday, September 23, 2003 at her home in Harlingen.
A devoted wife and mother, Doris is survived by her husband of 65 years, Vernon C. Johnston; sons, Robert/Bob (Barbara) and Vernon C., Jr./Tip (Ann) all of Harlingen; daughter, Nancy (David) Long of Tyler; grandson, Brent Johnston of Austin; granddaughters, Rhonda (Steve) Carlin of Round Rock, Carrie Johnston of Harlingen, Melissa (Brian) South of Big Sandy; great grandson, Max Carlin; brother, Doyle (Wilma) Grice of Big Spring.
She was preceded in death by her parents, Walter and Icy Grice; infant son, Lonnie Allen Johnston and grandson, Glenn Austin Johnston.
Born January 9, 1920 in Idalou, Texas, Doris attended high school in Santa Rosa and Big Spring, Texas. Doris and Venon returned to Harlingen in 1945 where she actively served as PTA president/s at her children’s elementary, high school and for City Council PTA. A member of First Baptist Church in Harlingen, she sang in the choir, served as a greeter and participated in Sunday School and Women’s Bible Study. After raising a family, Doris returned to school, earned her LVN certificate and coordinated the Candy Stripers program for Valley Baptist Hospital. A member of the Harlingen Art Forum, Doris enjoyed oil painting, collecting antique jewelry, traveling, studying geology and genelogy and history.
Visitation hours will be held Sunday, September 28, 2003 from 12 p.m. to 9 p.m., with the family receiving friends from 4 p.m. to 6 p.m. at Buck Ashcraft Funeral Home.
Funeral services will be held Monday, September 29, 2003, 10 a.m., at the First Baptist Church in Harlingen with Dr. Don Higginbotham officiating. Interment will follow at Mont Meta Memorial Park.
Pallbearers will be Wallace Athley, Chris Hall, Jimmy Hough, Tom Lockhart, C.H. Hamilton, Bob Cole, Tom Coyle, and Dennis Mitchell.
Honorary pallbearers will be members of the Sandell Sunday School Class at First Baptist Church.

Ruby Maree Elmore
FORT WORTH, TX — Ruby Maree Elmore, 89, passed away September 24, 2003 at Stone Gate Nursing Center in Fort Worth, TX.
Mrs. Elmore was born in Waxahacie, Texas and was a housewife.
A Graveside Service will only be held at 2 p.m., Saturday, September 27, 2003 with Rev. David Mann and the Does Drove #90. Interment to follow at Restlawn Memorial Park.

Genaro Cano, Jr.
HARLINGEN, TX — Genaro Cano, Jr., went to be with his Lord and Savior on September 22, 20003 at the age of 92. He was born on January 21, 1911 to Genaro Cano, Sr. and Gertrudes Trevino Cano in Burgos Tamaulipas, Mexico.
He married Maria Antonia Cano on December 31, 1933 in Cerralvo, NL. He was a wonderful husband, father, father-in-law and grandfather. He was in the grocery business before retirement. He lived life to the fullest always enjoying the time he spent with his family. He was a member of Primera Iglesia Bautista in Harlingen.
He was preceded in death by his parents and beloved wife of 69 years Maria Antonia Cano; his daughter, Viola Cano Trevino; an infant son, Jose Cano; two brothers, Israel Cano and Rogelio Cano; two sisters, Maria T. Cano and Bricelda Martinez; and two sons-in-law, Richard Davila and Ramon Davila.
Survivors include his sons, Felix (Haydee) Cano, Noe (Lionor) Cano, Genaro (Maricela) Cano, III, and Josue (Enedelia) Cano all of Harlingen, TX; a son-in-law, George Trevino of Harlingen, TX; his daughters, Noelia Davila and Maria Antonia (Arturo) Juarez all of New Braunfels, TX, and Eloina Davila of Lubbock, TX; 25 grandchildren, 38 great-grandchildren and 2 great-great-granddaughters; one sister, Ninfa Salinas, and sisters-in-law, Rosita Cano and Ninfa Cano all of Harlingen, TX; and numerous nieces and nephews and numerous relatives in Mexico.
Visitation will be held today, September 25, 2003, from 10 a.m. until 2 p.m. at the Rudy Garza Chapel of Peace and then from 3 p.m. until 4 p.m. at the Primera Iglesia Bautista, at the corner of C St. and Filmore, with the funeral service to begin at 4 p.m., with Pastor Robert Rodriguez officiating. Interment will follow at Mont Meta Memorial Park Cemetery in San Benito, TX.
Pallbearers will be his grandsons, George Trevino, Jr., Noe Cano, Jr., Mike Torres, David Cano, Raymond Davila, Jr., Dr. Felix Cano, Jr., Rocky Davila, Richard Davila, II and Josue Cano, Jr.
Honorary pallbearers will be Lori Cano and Dina Cano Garcia.

Edith M. Miller
HARLINGEN, TX — Edith Marie Miller, 84, passed away Saturday, September 20, 2003 at Valley Baptist Medical Center in Harlingen, Texas.
Edith was born on May 8, 1919 and grew up as a Nebraska farm girl, eldest daughter of a Lutheran minister. At 18 in the midst of the country’s depression she struck out on her own. After 2 marriages and divorces, she found herself with her adopted son, Clifford Douglas living in Denver, Colorado with her friends Jack and Kay Roth. They introduced her to their friend Charles David Miller. Charles and Edith married on March 3, 1952. A year later "David" adopted Clifford and during the same time frame Billie was conceived. Edith had been told that she was medically unable to conceive, so this new life was precious surprise.
Edith went through many careers as she followed David around the world. During the war she was a welder. She graduated from Beauty College and was a hairdresser for many years. Her next career was 9 years as a telephone operator. Through all these she was a military wife, parent and homemaker. In the retirement years she became a very successful realtor.
Her enjoyments included her family, ceramics, re-upholstering, sewing, golf, quilting, painting, and her favorite was bridge.
As the years affected her health she was unable to do very much and the loss of Daivd on July 28, 2002 left her very lonely. They had been together in marriage 50 years and 2 months. She had survived through strokes and eventually passed from the respiratory side effects on Saturday, September 20, 2003.
She is survived by her son, Clifford; daughter and son-in-law, Bille and Jeff Leazenby; grandson, Daniel Leazenby; brother, Lloyd Haack and family; and sister, Ruth Godding and family.
Visitation and viewing will be on Tuesday, September 23, 2003 at Buck Ashcraft Funeral Home from 4 p.m. to 7 p.m.
On Wednesday, September 24, 2003, at 2 p.m., at Retzlaff Hall of Sunshine Country Club Estates in Harlingen, there will be a memorial service for both Edith and David (known as Charley by his friends.) The service will be officiated by chaplains David Mann and Cameron Gillette, of Valley Baptist Medical Center, assisted by Elder Jeff Leazenby and Deacon Billie Leazenby of the Community Christ Church of Bellevue, Nebraska.
Her cremated remains will remain with her daughter, Billie. In lieu of flowers the family makes these memorial suggestions: An improvement for the estates facilities, a regular contribution to your child or grandchild’s college fund, or the American Cancer Society.

Irene Faye Green Place
HARLINGEN — The good Lord called a precious soul home today, Saturday, November 29, 2003, with her 3 girls at her bedside. Irene was born the third of eight children on December 27, 1921, to Joe and Clara Rogers Green in Harlingen, Texas.
Irene was raised in Harlingen, except for a few years in Port Isabel where she graduated from high school.
Irene was a very special lady and was loved dearly by her family and friends who had the honor of knowing her. She had the memory of an elephant and could tell you who lived next door or down the street from her at every place she ever lived, even as far back as early childhood.
Irene worked at the Air Force base here in Harlingen in the 1950’s and later in the insurance business.
She and her husband, Doug, loved square dancing and had many happy years of dancing all over the country until Doug passed away in 1996.
Irene also loved Las Vegas and trying to beat those one-arm bandits with her nickels and quarters. Irene was always ready to go and have fun. Although she was battling some health problems, she never quit until August when her little body just started giving in.
After two stays in Valley Baptist Medical Center and Golden Palms Health Center she was taken home to be made as comfortable as possible with the help of Sandi Jo Funk Hospice. Her oldest daughter, Dawn stayed home 24/7 to take care of her mother with the help of her brother Bill, his wife Rece, Irene’s sister Fran and niece Jerry Kay Floyd.
Irene will be greatly missed by all who knew and loved her. She was preceded in death by her husband of 48 years, Douglas in 1996; her parents; brother James Green; sisters, Mildred Green and Lillian Floyd Muncy.
Surviving Irene are daughters, Dawn Langham of Harlingen, Carol (Myron) Lane of Bandera, Ann (Michael) Barrera of San Antonio; and son, Bill (Rece) Place of Harlingen.
She is also survived by sister, Fran (Howard) Engstrom of Goodrich, TX; brothers, Roy (Dean) Green of Manvel, TX, Doug (Ruby) Green of East Tawakoni, TX, and Bobby (Verla) Green of Harlingen, TX; grandchildren, Shannon, Shane and Summer Langham, Crystal Place (Dano) Jauregui, Zane and Sagan Gonzalez, Derek Polston, and Keith, Austin, and Jordan Barrera; three great-grandchildren and numerous nieces and nephews that loved their "Aunt Renie" very much.

Graveside Services will be held at Mont Meta Cemetery today, Tuesday, December 2, 2003 at 11 a.m. with Hospice Chaplain Jennifer Bordanet officiating.

Kay Marie Tigner
MERCEDES — Kay Marie Tigner, age 62, was called home to the Lord’s Heavenly Kingdom Friday November 28, 2003 at her residence. She was born July 6, 1941 in Fargo, North Dakota to her parents Ralph and Harriet Auringer. Kay resided in Mercedes since Sept. 2001 and was a retired educator from the Houston Independent School District. She was a gifted school teacher, she loved to dance and she will be missed by everyone she ever knew.
Survived by her life companion for 19 years Coral Ibarra; one daughter, Marina K. Whitacre and her husband Heath; four brothers, Ralph Jr. Auringer, Eugene Auringer, Duane Auringer and James Auringer; one sister, Beverly Nickens and a sister-in-law, Edythe Auringer; and numerous nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her parents and a brother Robert Auringer.
Private Services will be held at a later date.

William J. Wolf
HARLINGEN, TX — William Jospeh Wolf, age 93, died Wednesday, November 26, 2003 of Pneumonia at the Valley Baptist Medical Center.
He was a resident of Harlingen, Texas for 49 years. He was a Carpenter at the Harlingen Tuberculosis Hospital, previously he was a farmer residing near La Feria, Texas. He was a member of St. Anthony’s Catholic Church of Harlingen for 49 years.
He was married to Rae Eileen Wolf for 52 years until her death in 1995.
He is survived by his daughter, Marilyn Wolf of Galveston, Texas.
Funeral Mass will be held on Saturday, November 29, 2003 at Mont Meta Funeral Home Chapel at 9 a.m. with Deacon Margarito Briones officiating. Interment will follow at Restlawn Memorial Park in La Feria, Texas.
