Thomas "Tom" E. Cooper
HARLINGEN, TX — Thomas "Tom" E. Cooper, 82, passed away after a sudden illness, Sunday, June 8, 2003 at Valley Baptist Medical Center in Harlingen, Texas.
Mr. Cooper was born in Des Moines, Iowa on September 18, 1920.
Tom is survived by his loving wife of 57 years, Barbara Shreves Cooper; his daughter, Susan (James) Price of Aurora, Illinois; his grandchildren, Shannon Daugherty and Chad Daughterty; his four great grandchildren; and his sister, Sally (Mrs. Noah) Lacona are all in Iowa; and several nieces and nephews.
Tom was preceded in death by his parents, William Jennings Bryan Cooper and Catherine Maxwell Cooper; his brother, John R. Cooper.
Tom served his country in the Air Corp from September 1941 through October 1945 in Italy and North Africa. After returning stateside he worked at N.W. Bell until 1973, when he returned, he and Barbara retired to live in Harlingen, Texas. Tom and Barbara were active members at First Presbyterian Church; Tom belonged to the Harlingen Elks Lodge #1889 and was a fifty year member of the Masonic Lodge; and belonged to ZaGaZig Shrine in Iowa.
Memorial services will be held Wednesday, June 11, 2003 at 10 a.m. at First Presbyterian Church with Reverend Justin Jones officiating.
For those desiring to do so, memorials may be made to the First Presbyterian Church or charity of one’s choice.

Jennefer F. Bachelder
BATTLE CREEK, MI — Jennefer F. Bachelder, 50, of Battle Creek, Michigan died June 6, 2003 in Emmett Township, Michigan.
She was born August 30, 1952 to Earl and Lucy (Weatherford) Fortenberry in Mercedes. Her father died shortly after she was born and Jennefer was raised by Roy and Lucy Fortenberry.
She graduated from Weslaco High School, received a bachelors degree from Pan-American College in Edinburg and a masters degree from Western Michigan University.
Jennefer has been an educator for 27 years, beginning her career in Texas and most recently in Marshall, Michigan.
Her marriage to Philip Maddox ended in divorce. Jennefer married Pat Bachelder in 1991. He survives. Also surviving are daughter, Karyn Halverson and her daughter Kaitlyn, of Battle Creek; son Derek Maddox of Corpus Christi; stepsons Glenn (Kim) Bachelder and their son Alexander, of Fremont, Michigan; Jess Bachelder of Rocky River, Ohio; sister Jeanette (Herman) Comlekci of Toronto, Canada; and brother, Ivan (Sherry) Fortenberry of Donna.
Services took place today in Battle Creek. Interment , Oakridge Cemetery, Marshall.

Dr. Emilio Garcia, Jr. DDS
SAN ANTONIO/SAN BENITO — Dr. Emilio Garcia, Jr., DDS (formerly of San Benito, TX) passed away on Wednesday, June 4, 2003. Emilio was preceded in death by his loving parents, Emilio T. Garcia, Sr. and Georgia Ann B. Garcia.
He is survived by his one and only brother, Orlando Garcia, his sister-in-law, Iris D. Garcia, and his three loving nieces, Amanda Lee, Lori Ann, Samantha Georgia Garcia, all of San Benito, TX.
Emilio is a graduate of San Benito High School and attended Pan American University, Baylor University, and UTSA.
He received a Doctor’s Degree in Dentistry making a career of his education and established his dental practice in San Antonio, TX.
He also became a helicopter pilot with a certification for aviation ground and flight instruction, thus fulfilling his own personal goals.
He was a member of the St. George Maronite Catholic Church in San Antonio; member of the church choir, church usher, and Holy Name Society Member, designer of the church’s first website, winner of the Massabki Medal in 1997.
Emilio was a noble man who touched the lives of all those he met. He will be missed here on earth by many and welcomed into his new home in heaven.
Visitation and prayer service will be held on Tuesday, June 10, 2003 from 7 p.m. – 9 p.m. at Thomae Funeral Home. Funeral service will be at 2 p.m. at Our Lady Queen of the Universe in San Benito. Interment to follow at Mont Meta Cemetery in San Benito, TX.
Pallbearers will be Rick Aguirre, Juan R. Escamilla, Hector Garcia, Julian Garcia III, Nonito Plata III, and Roger Romero. Honorary pallbearer will be Richard Grimes.

Lois W. Schwebel
Oct. 30, 1912 – May 16, 2003
SANTA ROSA, TX — Former Santa Rosa resident Lois Wilson Schwebel died on May 16, 2003, at age 90. She was born in Okema, Oklahoma, in 1912.
She moved with her famlily to Santa Rosa at age 17. Mrs. Schwebel graduated from Santa Rosa High School in 1931 and lived in the Rio Grande Valley for many years. She also resided for extended periods in Tacoma, Washington, and in Big Sandy and Ingleside, Texas. A resident of the Ft. Worth area since 1998, she remained active and alert until succumbing to complications of congestive heart failure.
She was preceded in death by her husband of 59 years, Walter Schwebel; her sons, Walter Mervin, Robert, and Richard; her sisters, Elva Henniger, Leon Pickering, Letha Canon; and a brother, Flvavel Wilson.
Survivors include her daughter, Nancy Carol Carter of San Diego, California; four grandchildren; six great grandchildren; and one great great grandson. She is also survived by her sisters, Ruth Haugh, Marie Pattison, Nina Elliott; and a brother, Fred Wilson.
Her ashes will be interred in a graveside service at 4 p.m. on Sunday, June 15, 2003 at Restlawn Memorial Park, in La Feria.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the American Heart Association.

Sylvia Flores
BROWNSVILLE, TX — Sylvia Flores, 37, passed away Thursday, June 19, 2003 at Valley Baptist Hospital in Harlingen, TX.
Ms. Flores was a 1985 graduate of Porter High School and continued her education at TSTI in Harlingen. She was currently working at Harlingen Good Samaritan as Human Resource Director. Her hobbies included baking, fishing, reading, attending her nieces’ and nephews’ activities, and attending spiritual retreats.
She is preceded in death by her father, Jose Manuel Flores.
She is survived by her sons Steven Flores and Joel Hinojosa Jr., her mother, Aurora Flores, 2 sisters, Virginia Hamby and Janie Garcia, 3 brothers, Juan Manuel Flores, Reynaldo Flores, and Guadalupe Flores, nieces and nephews and a brother-in-law, Andres Garcia Jr., all of Brownsville, TX.
Visitation was held Friday, June 20, 2003 from 5:30 to 9 p.m. with a recitation of the holy rosary at 7 p.m. at Buena Vista Funeral Home.
Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 1 p.m. on Saturday, June 21, 2003 at St. Eugene de Mazenod with Deacon Bruno Cedillo as celebrant. Funeral procession will depart Buena Vista Funeral Home at 12:30 p.m.
Committal service will follow at Buena Vista Burial Park.

SAN BENITO, TX — Hector Edmundo Casas, 79, entered into rest on Wednesday, June 18, 2003 at Valley Baptist Medical Center.
Mr. Casas is survived by his wife, Berta T. Casas of San Benito, TX; daughters, Mary Cynthia (Marc) Cerrato of Las Vegas, Nevada, Norma Jeanne Casas of Austin and Linda Sue (Salvador Martinez) Casas of Austin; his son, Hector Anthony (Sonia) Casas of Harlingen; 2 grandchildren, Jose Francisco Casas of Austin and Abraham Martinez of Austin; his brothers, Adolfo Cordova, Sr. of San Benito and Joe Casas of Orange, California; and sisters, Enedelia (Adan) Sanchez of Delware, Ester (Joe) Garcia of Church Falls, Virginia, Olivia Gonzalez of Alice, TX and Juanita Casas of Alice, TX.

Luanne Favre
LONGVIEW, TX — Mass of Christian for "Luanne" Favre, 58, of Longview, TX, were held at 10 a.m., Monday, May 19, 2003 at Our Lady of the Gulf Catholic Church, Bay St. Louis, MS.
A Rosary was recited at 8 p.m., Sunday, May 20, 2003 at Edmund Fahey Funeral Home. Entombment was in Gulf Coast Memorial Mausoleum.
Luanne Favre died Wednesday, May 14, in a Dallas hospital. Mrs. Favre was born February 24, 1945 in Harlingen, TX to Edward O. and Cora Elizabeth Harmon. She was a Register Nurse in labor and delivery at Longview Regional Medical Center. She completed the diploma program in 1967 in Sacramento CA, and received her associates degree. She was an avid reader and had a passion for collecting any thing associated with Precious Moments. Also, she was a Christian.
She was preceded in death by her parents, and a brother, David F. Harmon.
Survivors include her husband, Byron P. Favre of Longview; brother, Jay Harmon of La Veta, CO; step-daughters, Michelle Favre and Marie Wicker; grandson, Dwayne Favre and granddaughter, Amanda Cooper; and numerous nieces and nephews.

Raymond Hinman
HARLINGEN, TX — Raymond (Sailor) E. Hinman, 50, Merchant Marine Born Dayton, Ohio on March 12, 1953. He died on Friday, June 6, 2003 at Valley Baptist Hospital.
Surviving from previous marriage, Virginia Murphey; two sons Jeremy (Lynda) Hinman, Jason Hinman; sisters Suzy Manning, Sandy Griesheyer, Sheri Hinman, Sena Dixon and present wife Tenna Felix, wife of 17 years.

Gloria Escobedo Alvarez
SAN BENITO — Gloria Escobedo Alvarez, 52, entered into rest on Saturday, June 14, 2003 at Harlingen Medical Center. Gloria was born September 6, 1950 in San Benito, Texas to Ernestina V. and Arturo R. Escobedo. She was a member of St. Theresa Catholic Church.
She is survived by her daughter Eva Teresa "Terry" Alvarez (Rene); her mother Ernestina V. Escobedo; her siblings, Santos E.A. (Ron) George of Harrisburg, PA, Emilia Escobedo of Denton, TX, Arturo Escobedo of San Benito, Norma A. (Leo) Longoria of La Feria, Rosalinda E. (Justin) Reaves of Houston, TX and Ida E. (David) Arellano of San Antonio, TX; nieces and nephews Ruth Ann Alicia, Rosita Alicia, Alfredo Escobedo, Cindy Escobedo, Jessica and Janis Escobedo, Tanya, Patricia and Elisa Longoria, Arturo and Samantha Jimenez, Stephanie Escobedo and Mindy Arellano.
Gloria was preceded in death by her father Arturo R. Escobedo, her daughter Ana Elisa Alvarez, and her brother Samuel Escobedo.
Visitation will be held on Monday, June 16, 2003 at San Benito Funeral Home from 4 p.m. to 9 p.m. and on Tuesday, June 17, 2003 from 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. with a rosary at 7 p.m. both nights.
Funeral Mass will be held on Wednesday, June 18, 2003 at St. Theresa Catholic Church at 10 a.m. Interment will follow at Mont Meta Memorial Park.

George Calvin Haynes
HARLINGEN — George Calvin Haynes, 82, was called by our Lord on June 13, 2003 at Valley Baptist Medical Center. He was born on July 8, 1920 in Stuart Place, TX and moved to Harlingen as a young man, living there most of his life.
George worked as a short wave tower technician; he retired to his hobbies. He was a charter member of Smash Remote Control Club, and a member of the Academy of Aeronautics Association.
George leaves behind numerous nieces, nephews and very close friends. He will be deeply missed.
Graveside services will be held on Monday June 16, 2003 at the Combes Cemetery.
