Abelina Garcia

BROWNSVILLE, TX — Abelina (Abby) Garcia, 86, entered into eternal rest with the Lord on Monday, February 3, 2003 in Brownsville, TX. She was born January 8, 1917 to the late Jose Saldana and Maria Dominguez Saldana.

She attended school in Olmito, TX. With her late husband, Domingo Garcia, they established Rancho Alegre Café and later opened Abby’s Lounge and after her retirement she opened Eagles Nest.

Abelina was preceded in death by her husband, Domingo Garcia; two brothers, Guilibaldo Saldana and Eliseo Saldana; one grandson, Emilio Pena, Jr.; one great grandson, Dominic Capuchino and her parents, Maria Dominguez and Jose Saldana.

She is survived by five daughters, Lupita (Tony, Sr.) Soto, Griselda (Esteban) Medina and Angie (Emilio) Pena all of Brownsville, Abelina (Alfredo) Recio of El Paso, Palmira (Macario) Baez of Corpus Christi and one son, Jorge Patricio Garcia of Houston; one sister, Juanita Falcon of Brownsville.

Also surviving are 23 grandchildren, 45 great grandchildren, 8 great great grandchildren and numerous nieces and nephews.

Visitation will be held today, Wednesday, February 5, 2003 at Guerra Funeral Home "Chapel of the Holy Spirit" from 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. with a holy rosary recited at 7 p.m. A funeral mass will be held on Thursday, February 6, 2003 at Christ the King Catholic Church, 2255 Southmost Rd. at 10 a.m.

Pallbearers will be Tony Soto, Jr., Ruben Medina, Jesse Pena, J.P. Garcia, Ruben Recio and Jesus Baez.

Honorary pallbearers will be Mark Recio, Joe Soto, Mark Garcia and Domingo Baez.

Funeral arrangements are under the direction of Guerra Funeral Home of Brownsville, 3955 Coffee Port Rd. (956) 544-1171.

Jose R. Quintero

SAN BENITO, TX — Jose R. Quintero, 92, of San Benito, passed away at Harlingen Nursing Center, on February 3, 2003. Mr. Quintero was a life time resident of San Benito, TX. He was a member of St. Benedicts Catholic Church, U.S. Army Veteran of W.W. II, had a passion for gardening and taking long walks.

Now he is in the presence of his beautiful wife, Eusebia N. Quintero and our Lord Jesus Christ. Survivors include his children, Mr. And Mrs. Hector (Yolanda) Quintero Sr. of San Benito, TX, Mr. And Mrs Gloria (Sergio) Q. Garcia of Pasadena, TX, and Mr. And Mrs. Maria Cristina (Aureliano) Q. Linares of Pasadena, TX; 8 grandchildren, Cynthia (Frank) Vasquez, Sandra (Juan Gabriel) Sifuentes, Brenda Lee (Lino Daniel) Gonzalez, Hector Quintero Jr., Sergio (Diane) Garcia Jr., JoAnn (Felix) Flores, Eloy Garcia and James (Melissa) Linares; 15 great grandchildren, numerous nieces and nephews.

Pallbearers will be Jaime Linares, Sergio Garcia Jr., Eloy Garcia, Frank Vasquez, Juan Gabriel Sifuentes, Lino Daniel Gonzalez and honorary pallbearer will be Hector Quintero Jr.

Visitation will be held at 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. Wednesday, February 5, 2003 with a rosary at 7 p.m. at Thomae Garza Funeral Chapel.

Funeral service will be held 10 a.m., Thursday, February 6, 2003 at St. Benedicts Catholic Church.

Interment will follow to Mont Meta Memorial Park. military Honors conducted at the graveside by American Legion Post #205 and V.F.W. Post #498 of Harlingen, TX.

Antonio Trevino Jr.

LA FERIA, TX — Antonio Trevino Jr., 58, a lifetime resident of La Feria passed away on Sunday, February 2, 2003 at his residence. He is survived by his loving family, wife, Martha B. Trevino of La Feria, TX; mother, Guadalupe Trevino of Santa Rosa, TX; 3 sons, Rocky (Patty) Trevino of Austin, TX, Joshua (Dora) Trevino of La Feria, TX, and Jason (Sarah) Trevino of La Feria, TX; 1 daughter, Martha (Eddie) Gonzalez of Baytown, TX; 10 grandchildren.

He is preceded in death by his father, Antonio Trevino.

Mr. Trevino was a loving and dedicated son, brother, husband, father and grandfather. He will be dearly loved and missed by all those who knew home.

A memorial service will be held at 10 a.m. today, Wednesday, February 5, 2003 at Primera Iglesia Bautista Church in La Feria, TX.

Funeral arrangements are under the direction of Rudy Garza Funeral Home of Mercedes,  Texas.

Adolfo Ochoa Sr.

HARLINGEN, TX — Funeral services for Adolfo Ochoa Sr. will be held today, February 5, 2003 at 1 p.m. at Primera Iglesia de la Assemblia de Dios 321 E. Lincoln Harlingen. Officiating will be Pastor Emilio Cortez.

Burial will follow to Restlawn Memorial Park Cemetery.

Psalm 23:4 Yes though I walk through the valley of the shadow of death I will fear no evil, for you are with me. Your rod and your staff they comfort me.

Services will be under the direction of Trinity Funeral Chapel 1217 South F. Street Harlingen 364-2444.

Lamberto "Tito" Davila

HARLINGEN, TX — Lamberto "Tito" Davila passed away Sunday, February 2, 2003.

He was born in San Benito on June the 16th, 1930 to the late Epigmenio and Adela Davila. He attended Harlingen Public Schools and received Specialized Mechanical and Technical Training funded by the G.I. Bill. He volunteered with the U.S. Air Corp and is a Veteran of W W II. He retired from United States Department of Agriculture after 31 years of service, which included 12 years of Foreign Service. He received numerous awards and certificates of merit for outstanding performance of duties with the USDA. He received a special award from the Director of USDA for An Innovative Modification of a Complex Piece of Mechanical Equipment, providing a substantial savings to the US Government. He was a member of the Catholic War Veterans and Committee President of Retired Government Employees. He was an Avid Golfer and was a Charter and Lifetime Member of the Pan American Golf Association. He enjoyed hunting and fishing with his family and friends.

He is preceded in death by his parents and brothers, Gilberto, Jose, Eriberto, and Roberto Davila; mother-in-law, Ysidra Silva and father-in-law, Guadalupe Garza.

He is survived by his wonderful and loving wife, of 53 years, Gloria; father-in-law, Abel T. Silva; sisters, Lucila Garza of Harlingen and Aminta Lopez from Houston; brother-in-law, Carlos "Chale" Garza of Harlingen; sons, Gilbert Davila from Hebbronville, Lamberto Jr., Alberto and Duke Davila from Harlingen; daughter, Debbie Loera from Humble; son-in-law, Louis Loera from Humble; daughters-in-law, Idalia Davila from Hebbronville, Gloria Davila and Lori Davila from Harlingen; grandchildren, Gilbert "Donny", Gina, Gisele, Tammy, Lamberto "Tito" III, Eloy, A.J., Jenny, D’Lisa, Larissa, Derek, Sammy and Marisa Ysidra; great-grandchildren, Brianna, Kameron, Emma Laura and Andrew Emil; and lots of Loved nieces and nephews.

Visitation will be held on Tuesday from 1 p.m. to 9 p.m. with a Rosary at 7 p.m. at San Benito Funeral Home.

Funeral service will be held on Wednesday at 10:30 a.m. at the Immaculate Heart of Mary Church in Harlingen with Father Briseno officiating. Interment will follow at the Mont Meta Memorial Park Cemetery in San Benito with Full military Services.

Pallbearers will be Danny Davila-Harlingen, Roberto Davila Jr.-McAllen, Danny Davila-Humble, Roberto Colunga-Houston, Carlos Garza IV-Harlingen and Javier Salazar-Harlingen.

Honorary pallbearers will be all of the Members of the Pan American Golf Association, Member of USDA Program of Tuxtla Gutierrez, Mexico, Santana Munoz and Ramiro Cano, all of his Beloved Compadres.

Special Thanks to Dr. T. Shenkenberg and staff, Dr. Hilmy and staff of The Harlingen Heart Clinic and Sandi Jo Funk Hospice.

Funeral arrangements are under the direction of San Benito Funeral Home, 1400 W. Hwy 77 in San Benito, TX.

Nola Kitamura

HARLINGEN, TX — Nola Kitamura, lived in Harlingen for 53 years. Nola’s life was dedicated to the care of her family, friends, church, and to the education of children both in elementary school and church Sunday school.

Nola’s life began in Houston,  Texas on November 13, 1926 and ended on Saturday, February 1, 2003, at the age of 76.

Her husband, John, and her eldest son, Douglas, preceded Nola in death.

Nola attended Mary Hardin Baylor College, where she earned a B.S. degree. Nola married John Mitsuo Kitamura in Houston on August 19, 1950. They moved to Harlingen and were married 31 years. Nola taught first grade at Dishman Elementary in Combes,  Texas and Travis Elementary in Harlingen,  Texas, a total of 27 years. She retired in 1986. Nola was a devout and active member of the First Baptist Church in Harlingen, where she taught Sunday School for 40 years. Nola was an avid Gardner and was twice honored by the City of Harlingen for having the yard of the month. The highlight of her retirement was her trip to Japan with her daughter, Natalie. She fulfilled her lifelong dream to visit her relatives and refreshed her knowledge of the Japanese language. All in all, Nola was a devoted mother and grandmother, a tireless friend, and an asset to her church and community. Nola was loved and will be missed.

Nola is survived by a son, Bryan Russell Kitamura of Harlingen, TX; daughter, Natalie Kitamura Alwitt; son-in-law, Philip Mayer Alwitt, and grandson, Kenzo Lawrence Alwitt, who knew her as his beloved Granola all of Sausalito, CA; sister, Tonia Kitamura of San Benito, TX; brothers, Eskridge and Shigeru Imai of Houston, TX.

Visitation hours will be held from 12 p.m. to 9 p.m. with the family receiving friends from 5 p.m. to 7 p.m., Tuesday, February 4, 2003 at the funeral home.

Funeral services will be held at the First Baptist Church in Harlingen, 10 a.m., Wednesday, February 5, 2003 with the Reverend Pat Graham officiating. Burial will follow at Restlawn Memorial Park.

Pallbearers will be Robert Binney, Doug Brown, George Kitamura, Nelson Kitamura, John Tucker, and Jim Woodall.

In lieu of flowers the family request that memorial contributions may be made to the Rio Grande Children’s Home, Rt. 11 Box 535, Mission,  Texas 78572.

Funeral arrangments are under the direction of Buck Ashcraft Funeral Home.

Adolfo Ochoa Sr.

HARLINGEN, TX — Adolfo Ochoa Sr., age 81, went to be with the Lord on Monday morning at his residence in Harlingen. He was a lifetime resident of Harlingen .

He had retired from the U.S.D.A. He was a veteran of W W II and a member of American Legion Post 205. He was a member of Primera Iglesia de la Assemblia de Dios. Mr. Ochoa was a loving husband, father, grandfather and brother.

He was prededed in death by his son David Ochoa in 1991.

Survivors include his wife of 54 years Eva Ochoa of Harlingen; 4 sons, Adolfo (Mary) Ochoa Jr. of Pasadena, Reynaldo Ochoa of Midwest City, OK, Roy Ochoa of Harlingen, and Ruben (Janie) Ochoa also of Harlingen; 1 daughter, Sandra (Adam) Rosales of Deer Park, TX; 15 grandchildren and 6 great grandchildren; also 1 sister, Tomasa Trevino of Harlingen.

Visitation will be held Tuesday, February 4, 2003 from 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. wilth a prayer service to be held at 7 p.m. with Rev. Tadeo Cano officiating.

Funeral service will be held 10 a.m., Wednesday, February 5, 2003, at Primera Iglesia de la Assamblea de Dios with the Pastor Emilio Cortez officiating. Burial will follow to Restlawn Memorial Park.

Pallbearers will be Adolfo Ochoa Jr., Reynaldo Ochoa, Roy Ochoa, Ruben Ochoa, Adolfo Ochoa III, and Carlos Daniel Ochoa. Honorary pallbearers will be Sandra Rosales and Tony Ochoa.

Tomas Cuellar Jr.

WESLACO, TX — Tomas Cuellar, Jr., 67, was born in Weslaco,  Texas on May 2, 1935 to Tomas, Sr. and Candelaria Cardenas Cuellar.

He worked as a Produce Buyer at Gulf de Bryan Produce in Weslaco for 40 years. For the past 8 years, he worked at Plantation Produce in Mission. He was the owner of Triple "C" Trucking in Wesalco. He was also a member of the Weslaco Lions Club and the Knights of Columbus. Tomas was a loving husband, father, brother and grandfather-and will be greatly missed by all who knew him.

He is survived by his wife, Maria Cuellar of Weslaco; his sons, Tomas (Selina) Cuellar, III of Progreso, Victor (Magda) Cuellar of McAllen and Tomas Javier "T.J." Cuellar of Weslaco; his daughters, Edna (Mike) McDaniel of Flour Mound, TX, Lisa (Roger) Ecke of Missouri City, TX, Myra Cuellar and Nina Garcia both of Weslaco; his sister, Oralia Hernandez of Weslaco; six grandchildren, Victor Paul Cuellar, Casandra Cuellar, Randy Ecke, Ryan Ecke, Ashley McDaniel and Michael McDaniel; the mother of his children, Dr. Odilia Leal, PhD; and numerous aunts, uncles, cousins, nieces and nephews.

Visitation will be held today, Tuesday, February 4, 2003 from 10 a.m. to 9 p.m. with a Rosary at 7 p.m. at McCaleb Funeral Home, 900 W. 4th St. in Weslaco.

Funeral services will be held Wednesday, February 5, 2003 at 10 a.m. at St. Pius Catholic Church in Weslaco. Interment will follow at Highland Memorial Park in Weslaco.

Serving as pallbearers will be Tomas Cuellar, III, Victor Cuellar, Tomas Javier "T.J." Cuellar, Randy Ecke, Mike McDaniel, Timmy Hernandez, David Hernandez and Michael McDaniel.

Funeral arrangements are under the direction of McCaleb Funeral Home in Weslaco.

Emily K. Anderson

HARLINGEN — Emily K. Anderson, 85, passed away while sleeping at home on January 28, 2003.

was born in Janesville, Wisconsin on November 18, 1917, and graduated from Janesville High School in 1933.

She attended the University of Wisconsin and earned a degree in political science in 1939. That September she married Howard E. Anderson and they began a happy marriage that lasted 63 years. While Howard was working for Sears during the 1950s and 1960s, becoming a store manager, Emily was involved in numerous civic organizations in the Minneapolis area while raising three sons: Stephen Kenneth, financial account manager, now of Tucson, Arizona; Terry Howard, history professor, of College Station,  Texas; and Jeffery Don, environmental scientist of Cedarburg, Wisconsin.

In 1976 Emily and Howard retired and moved to Palm Valley and built a home at Harlingen Country Club.

She was active in the Ladies Golf Association at the club and one year won the course title in her bracket.

After retiring from golf she spent memorable mornings with her exercise group and afternoons with her bridge friends in Harlingen and during the summer at Silver Bay, Minnesota.

She was a loving wife and marvelous mother and is survived by her sister, Better Gervais of Sequim,  Washington; three grandchildren; three sons; and her devoted husband, Howard.

Memorial services will be held Tuesday, February 4, 2003 at 3 p.m. at Buck Ashcraft Funeral Home Chapel.

Memorial donations may be made to the American Heart Association in lieu of flowers.

Arrangements are under the direction of Buck Ashcraft Funeral Home.

Robert E. Berry

KNOXVILLE, IL — Robert E. Berry, age 75, of Knoxville, Illinois died Monday, January 27, 2003 at his residence in Harlingen,  Texas of natural causes.

Born on June 23, 1927 in Galesburg, Illinois the son of Claude H. and Hazel Dee Berry. On April 17, 1981 he married Jean Self Benjamin in Knoxville, Illinois.

He is survived by his wife Jean; and son Bret Benjamin of Knoxville, Illinois.

A celebration of his life will be held on Sunday February 2, 2003 at 4 p.m. at the Hurd Hendricks Funeral Home in Knoxville, Illinois. Officiating at the service will be Rev. Jerry Hill.

Friends may call at the Hurd Hendricks Funeral Home in Knoxville, Illinois from 2 to 4 p.m. on Sunday, February 2, 2003. Masonic services will be held on Sunday, February 2, 2003 at 3:45 p.m. at the Hurd Hendricks Funeral Home in Knoxville, Illinois.

Memorials may be made to the First Christian Church in Knoxville, Illinois.
