HARLINGEN — Pedro Alvarez, 73, of Harlingen, entered into rest Saturday, October 5, 2002. He was a lifelong resident of Harlingen and was a self-employed truck driver for many years.
He served in the United States Army. He is survived by his loving wife of 46 years, Julia Alvarez; four daughters, Mary Lou Alvarez, Sylvia Alvarez Cortez, Irma A. (Jose) Torres, all of Harlingen, and Christina A. (Israel) Cantu of Edinburg; grandchildren, Marisa, Carlos, and Veronica (Roni) Cortez; Jonathan Andrew Cantu and Julia Renee Torres. Also surviving are his brothers, Lolo (Jesusa) Alvarez and Adolfo (Lupita) Alvarez; sisters, Genoveva Alvarez and Angela A. Garcia; numerous nieces and nephews and great-nieces and nephews. He is preceded in death by his parents, Genaro and Dominga Alvarez; brothers, Martin Y. Alvarez and Martin R. Alvarez; and sister, Elias Maria Flores.
Funeral services will be held today (Monday) departing the Rudy Garza Chapel of Peace at 1:30 p.m. for a Mass of Christian Burial at 2 p.m. at Queen of Peace Catholic Church and interment will follow at Restlawn Memorial Park Cemetery, under the auspices of American Legion Post #205 and VFW Post #2410.
Pallbearers will be Genaro Alvarez, Mateo Alvarez, Eddie Alvarez, Felipe Garcia, Sr., Arturo Alvarez, and Ceferino Garcia. Honorary pallbearers will be Felipe Garcia, Jr., Jose R. Torres, Israel Cantu, David Barrera and Daniel Barrera.
Raymond J. Wolf
HARLINGEN — Raymond J. Wolf, age 64, passed away on Saturday, October 5, 2002. He is survived by his wife of 33 years, Ida L. Wolf of La Feria, TX; four sisters, Evelyn Reidel, Laura Bauer, both of La Feria, Julia Rauschuber of San Antonio and Mildred Ketterer of Midland Park, New Jersey; one brother, Joe Wolf of La Feria; mother-in-law, Consuelo Rubio of Santa Rosa, TX; also by numerous nieces and nephews. Mr. Wolf was preceded in death by his parents, Ben and Teresa Wolf; and one brother, Edward J. Wolf.
Visitation will be held Monday from 10 a.m. to 9 p.m. Recitation of the Holy Rosary will be at 7 p.m. Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated on Tuesday, October 8, 2002 at 2 p.m. at St. Francis Xavier Catholic Church in La Feria. Interment will follow at Rio Grande Valley Memorial Park in La Feria. Henry Clay Stokes, Sr.
RIO HONDO— Henry Clay Stokes, Sr. passed into eternity at his residence on Thursday evening, October 3, 2002. Born on September 30, 1919 in Livingston, Texas, he had just celebrated his 83rd birthday.
He served honorably in World War II from January 9, 1941 to July 8, 1945 in the European campaign. Assigned to the 2nd Battalion, 2nd Infantry Division, 38th Field Artillery as a forward observer, he was decorated with a Purple Heart after fighting in the Battle of the Bulge. His love for God and country was evident by all who knew him.
He loved hunting and fishing with his wife, and spent his life farming in the Rio Hondo area.
He is survived by his wife of 52 years, Mary Alice; three children, Ida Hagg (Michael) of Rio Hondo, Norman McNelly (Bobby) of Portland, Henry Clay, Jr. (Brenda) of Rio Hondo; sister Lucy (Emanuel) of Donna; grandchildren, Michael Ronnie (Heather), Chauncey Walter (Angela), Crystal Bethany, Tammy Lynn, Tommy Lee, Jennifer Clay; and numerous nieces and nephews.
Funeral services for Mr. Stokes will be at 10 a.m., Monday, October 7, 2002 at the First United Methodist Church in San Benito on N. Sam Houston St. with burial to follow at Mont Meta Memorial Park under the direction of Thomae Funeral Home of 701 N. Bowie St., San Benito.

Simona S. Martinez
SAN BENITO — Simona S. Martinez, 63, passed away on Friday, October 4, 2002 at Dolly Vinsant Memorial Hospital. She was born in Sequin, Texas and has lived in San Benito for all her life.
She was a housewife and a member of Primera Iglesia Apostolica Church of San Benito.
She is survived by her children; sons Julian Martinez and Jose Martinez, both of San Benito; daughters, Emma M. Rodriguez of Harlingen and Gloria Martinez of San Benito; 15 grandchildren and 17 great-grandchildren; 3 brothers and 3 sisters.
Mrs. Martinez was preceded in death by her parents, Sabino and Cira Sanchez; 1 daughter, Elena Martinez; and 2 brothers and 1 sister.
Visitation will begin, at the church, Sunday at 1 p.m. Prayer services will also be conducted on Sunday at Primera Iglesia Apostolica, 443 Julian St. in San Benito.
Mrs. Martinez will remain at the church until service time on Monday.
Funeral services will begin at 11 a.m. on Monday October 7, 2002 with Pastor Jonas Banuelos officiating. Interment will follow at Mont Meta Memorial Park.
Pallbearers will be her son and grandchildren, Joe Flores, Enrique Martinez, Samuel Rojas, Jody Macias, Chris Rojas, Joe Martinez.

Ramiro Cavazos
WESLACO, TX — Ramiro Cavazos, 72, entered into eternal rest with the Lord Thursday, October 3, 2002 at Knapp Medical Center in Weslaco, Texas.
He was a fifth generation Texan, born July 31, 1930 to a Weslaco pioneer family; Filiberto Cavazos, Sr. and Herlinda Garza Cavazos and was a lifetime Weslaco resident.
He was a direct decendant of "Jose Narciso Cavazos" who was a recipient of the Spanish Land Grant that today is part of the King Ranch and his father, Filiberto, helped survey the city of Weslaco in 1919.
He graduated from Weslaco High School, attended Pan American College, served with the National Guard Reserve and was a dedicated public servant in Hidalgo County having served as a Justice of the Peace for 11 years and a Hidalgo County Commissioner for 12 years. He was also a teacher, rancher and businessman.
He was preceded in death by his parents, three brothers, Emilio Cavazos, Filiberto Cavazos, Jr., and Luciano Cavazos.
He is survived by his loving wife of 44 years of marriage, Emma Cavazos of Weslaco; four children, Ramiro A. Cavazos of San Antonio, Aizar Cavazos of Weslaco, Victor H. Cavazos of San Antonio and Melissa R. Cavazos of Weslaco; three grandchildren, Alyssa, Brandie and Aizar; two brothers, Daniel Cavazos of McAllen and Noe Cavazos of Weslaco; sisters, Oralia Karam of McAllen and Lucila Cavazos of Weslaco; also surviving are many nephews and nieces.
Mr. Cavazos was a simple man with a great sense of humor, had a love for music and his charismatic smile will be dearly missed by his family members and friends.
Visitation was held Friday, October 4, 2002 at Guerra Funeral Home of Weslaco, "Chapel of The Angels" from 4 p.m. to 9 p.m. with a rosary recited at 7 p.m.
Funeral mass of Christian Burial will be held at 10 a.m., today, October 5, 2002 at St. Joan of Arc Catholic Church. Celebrant will be Reverend Lee D’Acosta.
Interment will follow at Highland Memorial Park.
Pallbearers will be Noe Cavazos Jr., Aizar Cavazos, Tony Cavazos, Victor Cavazos, Ramiro A. Cavazos and Joe Karam.

Joe G. Franco Sr.
EDINBURG, TX — Joe G. Franco Sr. passed away October 1, 2002 at Edinburg Regional Hospital Center.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Emilia Chapa Franco; his mother, Elena Franco; and two brothers, Rudy Franco and Robert Franco.
He is survived by eight children, Joe (Rita) Franco Jr. of Monterrey, Mexico, Elida (Armando) Elizondo of McAllen, Henry (Mary) Franco of Denver, CO, Mary (Robert) Villa of San Antonio, Benito (Velma) Franco of Roundrock, Texas, Yolanda (Moses) Garcia of San Antonio, Victor (Patricia) Franco of El Paso and Belia (Richard) Hinojosa of McAllen; three sisters, Guadalupe Esparza of Rockford, IL, Lydia Silva of Harlingen and Olga Wood also of Harlingen; brother, Ruben Franco; 30 grandchildren; and nine great grandchildren.
Visitation was held from 3 p.m. to 9 p.m., Thursday, October 3, 2002 followed by a 7 p.m. Rosary at Ceballos Funeral Home in McAllen.
There will be a 1 p.m. chapel service today, Friday, October 4, 2002 followed by burial at Valley Memorial Gardens at 2 p.m.

Donald L. Koenig
DONNA, TX — Donald L. Koenig, 60, passed away peacefully at his residence in Donna on October 1, 2002.
He was a native of Houston but had lived in Donna for the past 24 years. He was the owner and operator of Koenig Winter Resort of Donna.
He is survived by his mother, Mary E. Koenig of Donna; a brother, David P. Koenig of Las Vegas and a sister, Judith K. Koenig Hardy of Dallas.
Family will welcome friends at the family residence in Donna.

Guadalupe Ramirez
RAYMONDVILLE, TX — Guadalupe Trevino Ramirez, 81, formerly of Raymondville, went to be with her Lord October 2, 2002. She was a member of Manchester Baptist Church-Houston, a kind, caring and giving individual.
Her husband, Samuel Ramirez, Sr., and her son, Samuel Ramirez Jr., preceded her in death.
She is survived by her son, Reverend Oscar Ramirez and his wife, Julia; sisters, Adela Solis, Delia Uresti; brother, George Trevino; grandchildren, Jennifer Ramirez, Matthew A. Ramirez; great grandson, Kevin Tyler Ramirez.
Funeral services will be held at 6 p.m., Friday, October 4h, Forest Park Lawndale Family Chapel in Houston and again at 3 p.m., Saturday, October 5th, at Duddlesten Funeral Home in Raymondville followed by interment in Raymondville Memorial Park Cemtery.

Octavio C. Barrera
SANTA ROSA, TX — Octavio Clemente Barrera, 72, entered into rest on October 3, 2002 in Harlingen, Texas.
He is preceded in death by his parents, Gustavo Clemente Barrera and Lilia De La Rosa.
He is survived by his loving wife of 52 years, Adelaida Benavides Barrera of Santa Rosa; five children, Msgr. Gustavo Barrera of Brownsville, Luis Rodolfo Barrera of Plano, Aracelli Merla of Plano, Ocatvio Derly Barrera (Belia) of Santa Rosa, Mario Alfonso Barrera (Delyla) of Austin; 11 grandchildren and one great-grandchild. He is also survived by two brothers, Gustavo Barrera of Harlingen, Rodolfo Barrera of Falfurrias; two sisters, Norma Idalia Ramirez of Converse, and Anita Guerra of Falfurrias.
Visitation will be held today, October 4, 2002 from 10:00 a.m. until 5:00 p.m. at the Rudy Garza Chapel of Peace in Harlingen. Visitation will continue from 6:00 p.m. until 9:00 p.m. with a rosary to be prayed at 7:00 p.m. at St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Santa Rosa.
The funeral Mass of Christian burial will be held on Saturday, October 5, 2002 at 10:00 a.m. at St. Mary’s Catholic Church with Msgr. Father Gustavo Barrera as celebrant. Interment will follow at Sacred Heart Cemetery in Falfurrias, Texas.

Herman L. Mangum
HARLINGEN — Herman L. (Bill) Mangum was born February 19, 1915 in Ditto, TX. In 1932 at the age of 17, Bill joined the Mounted Calvary and road horseback from San Antonio to El Paso. Then joined the Air Force in 1938. In 1945, Bill met and married Jo Dean Davis. After retiring from the Air Force in 1959, Bill and his family returned to Harlingen.
Bill became one of the pioneer Aloe Vera farmers in the Rio Grande Valley. He and Jo Dean owned and operated Mangum’s Aloe Nursery in Harlingen. Bill was a well-known nurseryman throughout the valley. After selling Mangum’s Aloe Nursery in 1980. Bill turned his love of plants toward the raising of Sago Palms. Bill was a member of the First Assembly of God Church in Harlingen since the 1960’s.
Herman L. (Bill) Mangum, at the age of 87, entered into eternal rest with his Lord and Savior Thanksgiving Day November 28, 2002 at Valley Baptist Medical Center.
Bill was preceded in death by Jo Dean (Davis) Mangum his wife of 46 years. His parents Andy Babe Mangum and Dolly (Holder) Mangum and several brothers and sisters.
He is survived by his daughter Colleen (Richard) Mitchell of Harlingen. His three granddaughters, Shawn (Frank) Cazares, Dorinda (Billy) Pool and Tammy Brown all of Harlingen. One grandson Bo (Mandy) Mitchell of Pascagoula, MS. His six great-grandchildren, Cheyenne and Ryan Haley Cazares, Dylan and Caitlyn Pool, Brooklyn Brown and Blake Mitchell. He is survived by one brother LB Mangum of Pleasanton, TX and numerous nieces and nephews.
Serving as pallbearers wil be Richard (Bo) Mitchell, Frank Cazares, Billy Pool, Curt Akin, Paul Riley and Erin Coker. Honorary pallbearers will be Dylan Pool and Blake Mitchell.
Visitation will be held Sunday, December 1 from 12 noon till 9 p.m. Family will be in attendance to receive friends from 4 p.m. to 6 p.m. at Buck Ashcraft Funeral Home.
Chapel services will be held at Buck Ashcraft Funeral Home on Monday, December 2, 2002 at 11:30 a.m. with Rodney Herring and Rev. Wade Peyton officiating. Committal services will follow at Mont Meta Memorial Park. military honors will be performed by American Legion Post #205 and V. F. W. Post 2410.
