Joe Albert Garza

BROWNSVILLE, TX — Joe Albert Garza, 57, passed away on November 27, 2001 at Valley Regional Medical Center.

Mr. Garza attended  Texas Southmost College where he received his Associate Arts Degree in 1980. He also attended Pan American University and received a Bachelor of Business Administration.

He was a member of Alpha Kappa PSI and a life member of Kappa RHO Chapter. He was in the Who’s Who in 1982 and had the highest grade point average (Management).

He was employed at San Benito Consolidate Independent School District as a High School Teacher for 18 years. He was a member of St. Luke Catholic Church. He and his wife started Angeles Home Health, Inc. and acted as Financial Director from 1999 to present.

He was preceded in death by his mother, Juanita C. Garza; Father, Juan Jose Garza and brother, Antonio Ayala.

He is survived by his wife, Nora M. Garza of Brownsville; sons and daughters, Albert Anthony Garza (Norma) of Brownsville, Lisa Jo Coronado (Ron) of McAllen, Joe Albert Garza, Jr., and Monique Danae Garza both of Brownsville; sister, Domitila Bennett (William) of Houston; brothers, John Joe Garza (Lupita) of San Antonio, TX and Mario P. Garza (Perla) of Houston and 6 grandchildren.

Visitation will be held on Friday, November 30, 2001 from 11 a.m. to 9 p.m. with a rosary to be recited at 7 p.m. at the funeral home.

Mass will be celebrated on Saturday, December 1, 2001 at 10 a.m. at St. Luke Catholic Church (2800 Rockwell Dr.). Interment will follow at Roselawn Memorial Gardens.

Funeral services are under the direction of Buena Vista Funeral Home and Roselawn Memorial Gardens, 541-5400.

Israel Castillo, Sr.

SAN BENITO, TX — Israel Castillo, Sr. went to be with the Lord on Monday, November 26, 2001 at Twinbrooke Nursing Home in San Benito,  Texas.

Born on September 26, 1911 in San Carlos Tamps. Mexico, to Epifanio and Estefana Castillo.

Survivors include his wife, Luisa P. Castillo; daughters, Maria Luisa (Guadalupe) Garcia, Ofelia (Rogelio) Rocha, Gloria (Stephen) Henderson, and his sons, Israel "Kookie" (Maria Elena) Castillo, Reynaldo (Kristine) Castillo, and Antonio (Dolia) Castillo. Also surviving are his grandchildren, Liz Burns, Rodolfo Garcia, Rogelio Jr., and Rolando Rocha, Joel and Michael Castillo, Pilar, Jason, and Diana Castillo, Alana and Julian Henderson, Damon Castillo, and numerous great grandchildren, numerous nieces and nephews and many good friends. Also surviving are two brothers, Jesus Castillo from Harlingen, and Epifanio Castillo Jr., from Illinois, and five sisters, Anita Lopez, Josefina Romero, Juanita Gonzalez, and Emma Castillo all of Harlingen, and Francisca Romero of Lubbock,  Texas.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Epifanio and Estefana Castillo, and by his two brothers, Ramon and Luis Castillo, and one sister, Maria Castillo.

A Rosary will be officiated on Thursday, November 29, 2001 at 7 p.m. at the Chapel of Thomae Funeral Home located at 701 North Bowie, in San Benito.

Funeral services will be officiated on Friday, November 30, 2001 at 10 a.m. at St. Benedict’s Catholic Church, with burial to follow to San Benito City Cemetery.

Father Nacho Luna will be officiating the service.

Active pallbearers will be Rudy Garcia, Joey and Michael Castillo, Rogie and Rolando Rocha, and Pilar Castillo.

Funeral arrangements are under the direction of Thomae Funeral Home.

Ignacia G. Flores

HARLINGEN, TX — Lifetime resident of Rio Hondo, Ignacia G. Flores, 84, entered the Lord’s Kingdom on Wednesday, November 28, 2001 at Valley Baptist Medical Center.

She was born on October 23, 1917 in Brownsville,  Texas to Reyes Garza and Maria Villarreal.

Ignacia was greatly loved and will be missed dearly by all who knew her.

She is survived by her loving daughter, Rosalinda (Jesus) Garcia of Harlingen; four brothers and two sisters, Jose (Juanita) Campos of Rio Hondo, Aurora (Luis) Flores, Cuillermo Campos, Josefina (Ambrocio) Galvez all of Harlingen, Antonio (Teresa) Campos, Frank (Gabriella) Campos all of Viselia, California, and numerous nieces and nephews.

Visitation will be held today, in the Chapel of the Holy Spirit at Trinity Funeral Chapel, November 30, 2001 from 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. with a rosary to be recited at 7 p.m.

The funeral mass is tentatively set for Saturday, December 1, 2001 at 10 a.m. at St. Helen’s Church in Rio Hondo.

Interment will follow at Mont Meta Memorial Park Cemetery.

Funeral arrangements are under the direction of Trinity Funeral Chapel, 1217 South F. Street, Harlingen,  Texas 78550.

Hortencia C. Cano

MERCEDES— Hortencia C. Cano, 86, a lifetime resident of Mercedes, passed away on Tuesday, November 27, 2001 at her residence.

She was born on August 9, 1915 to Ignacio and Luz Gomez Champion. She is survived by 2 brothers, Raul (Selina) Champion of Mercedes, Ignacio Champion of Mercedes; 1 sister, Consuelo Champion of Mercedes; 7 nephews and nieces that loved her like a mother and will miss her very much.

She was a World War II Woman’s Army Corp Veteran.

She was preceded in death by her husband of 45 years, Bruno Cano and parents, Mr. and Mrs. Ignacio Champion.

With gratitude and many thanks to her caretakers, Rosa Rivas, San Juanita Buenrostro and Janie Martinez.

Funeral services will be conducted today, Friday, November 30, 2001.

We will depart Rudy Garza Funeral Home at 10:30 a.m. for an 11 a.m. Mass at Our Lady of Mercy Catholic Church. Interment will follow at Highland Memorial Park Cemetery in Weslaco. Pallbearers are: David C. Champion, M.D., Jorge Cortez, Juan J. Gonzalez, Sr., & Juan J. Gonzalez, Jr., J.D. Cortez, and Miguel Martinez.

military services are under the auspices of American Legion Post #205 and VFW Post #2410.

Funeral arrangements are under the direction of Rudy Garza Funeral Home of Mercedes.

Henry Talbert Mabry

HARLINGEN, TX — Henry Talbert Mabry was born July 5, 1910 in Cotulla,  Texas. He passed away on November 25, 2001 to be with God.

He moved to the Valley 61 years ago as a "Rough Neck" near Rio Hondo. He retired as Engineer Maintenance Man at Valley Baptist Medical Center after 18 years.

He was married to Dorothy Breazeale in San Benito in 1936 and was a member of Our Lady Queen of the Universe Catholic Church.

He was preceded in death by his parents, J.H. and Georgia Mabry of San Antonio; a brother, A. N. Mabry; two sisters, Henrietta Morrison of San Antonio and Winnie Ghenault of Catarina,  Texas.

He is survived by two great nephews, Bob Mabry of San Antonio and Grady Light of Rockport; two great nieces, Debbie Raskamp and Beverly Parrish; three great great nephews and three great great nieces.

Funeral arrangements are under the direction of Buck Ashcraft Funeral Home.

Carmen L. Carpio

SAN BENITO, TX — Carmen L. Carpio, 86, a lifetime resident of San Benito entered in God’s Kingdom on Wednesday, November 28, 2001.

She was born on July 14, 1915 in Mexico City D.F. to Isidoro and Micaela Leandro.

She worked 15 years for Dr. C.F. Lyle and 20 years with Cameron County Health Department in San Benito. Carmen was a devout Catholic and very devoted to St. Jude and the Blessed Virgin.

She was a loving wife, mother, grandmother and aunt. She is survived by her two sons, Julio L. (Josie) Carpio and Javier L. (Anita) Carpio and her two daughters, Estella Carpio and Graciela Carpio Rivera; her grandchildren, James P. (Nancy) Carpio, Jessica Carpio, Eric Rivera, Allison R. (Luis) Solorio, Julio (Celeste) Carpio IV, Steven Rivera, Jason Carpio and Christopher Carpio; her great grandchildren, Adriana Carpio, Anyssa Solorio, James Michael Carpio, Lindsey Carpio; two sisters-in-law, Dolores Kline Leandro and Lillian Murphy Leandro and numerous nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband, Julio M. Carpio; sisters, Guadalupe L. Garcia, Isabel L. Lerma; two brothers, Edmundo Leandro and Alfonso Leandro and a great grandson, Zachary N. Solorio.

Visitation will be held on Friday, November 30, 2001 at San Benito Funeral Home from 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. with a rosary to be prayed at 7 p.m.

Funeral mass will be held on Saturday, December 1, 2001 at St. Benedicts Catholic Church at 11 a.m. with burial to follow at Mont Meta Memorial Park.

Pallbearers will be Eddie Leandro, James Carpio, Steven Rivera, Eric Rivera, Julio Carpio IV and Jason Carpio.

Juana C. Aguilar

RAYMONDVILLE, TX — Juana C. Aguilar, 94, passed away to her heavenly reward on Tuesday, November 27, 2001. Juana Aguilar was born on February 8, 1907, in Victoria Tamps., Mexico. Juana was preceded in death by her husband, Catarino R. Aguilar and son, Faustino T. Aguilar, and grandson, Marcus Aguilar.

She is survived by five grandchildren, Martha Alcantar, Juanita A. Garcia, Amuel Aguilar, Abram Aguilar all from Big Spring, and Faustino G. Aguilar of San Angelo.

She was a lifetime resident of Raymondville and a member of the Mormon Church. The family wishes to thank Lupe Andrade; longtime friend and caretaker, Anna Vento for her support during our grandmother’s last days, and the Valley Baptist Medical Center doctors and nursing staff.

Fuenral services for Mrs. Aguilar, will be at 10 a.m. Friday, November 30, 2001 at Garcia & Trevino Funeral Home, 439 South Vermont, Mercedes, President Ellis Hemsley will be officiating. Burial will follow in Our Lady of Mercy Cemetery under the direction of Garcia & Trevino Funeral Home.
