George Lewis (Pinky) Schulgen
PORT ISABEL — George Lewis (Pinky) Schulgen, Sr., 79, was born on January 3, 1922 in Crossville, Tennessee and went to his Lord on Thursday, April 19, 2001 in Kerrville, Texas. George was a longtime resident of Santa Rosa and Port Isabel.
George is survived by his beloved wife of 55 years, Lometa V. Schulgen; three sons, Larry and wife, Connie of Sugarland, TX, George, Jr. and wife, Florence of Kerrville, Ron and wife, Linda of Kerrville; daughter, Marcia Usher and husband, Joe of Katy, TX; devoted "Poppa" to Cheryl Davidson and husband, Keith of Fulshear, TX; Greg Schulgen and wife, Alana of Katy; Rusty Schulgen of Costa Rica; Kelly Metzger and husband, Jake of Missouri City, TX; Sean and Shannon Schulgen of Dallas; Leah Schulgen, Brandy and Brooke Usher of Katy; Seth Schulgen of Boise, Idaho; J.J. Usher of Austin; Beau Schulgen of Kerrville; and great grand children, Brian, Bailey and Chase Davidson of Fulshear, TX and Jack Metzger of Missouri City, TX He is also survived by sisters, Alice Wiseman of Harlingen, Edna Baker of Raymondville, Catheryn Anderson of Harlingen, and Elizabeth Dueler of Houston. He was preceded in death by parents, J.A. and Edna Schulgen; brothers, James, Joe, William, Grady, Walter, Frank and Parker; and sisters, Mary Ellen and Francis.
George moved to Santa Rosa at age 8 from Tennessee. He graduated from Santa Rosa High School in 1942. He immediately enlisted in the Army Air Corps, serving as a flight engineer on the P-38’s in the 48th Fighter Squadron during WW II. He married Lometa V. Hill of Greenville, TX in 1945. George owned and operated Santa Rosa Iron Works, then founded Bilt-Rite Construction Co. George was a respected builder and businessman who, with his son, Ron, built many memorable landmarks throughout the Rio Grande Valley, specializing in commercial properties and United States Post Offices. Two projects that George was particularly proud of were the First United Methodist Church in Santa Rosa (whose chapel cross he forged by hand) and the nondenominational Chapel by the Sea on South Padre Island. A devoted family man, George spent many hours hunting and fishing with his family, who loved him dearly. George was a past president of the Rio Grande Valley Association of General Contractors and served on several state level committees for the construction industry. George was also a 32nd degree Mason and the best storyteller you ever met…"Never let the truth get in the way of a great story," he’d always say. George was a giving, caring man who loved his family and was a hard and honest worker and expected the same from his children. He had a special place in his heart for underprivileged children and would truly rather give than receive. George was a Christian who served his lord in so many ways. Heaven is a happier place now that "Poppa" has arrived. He will be missed by his family and by all of his many friends and former squadron members throughout the United States.
Funeral services will be held at the First United Methodist Church in Santa Rosa at 11 a.m. today with Pastor Jack Bush officiating. Interment will follow at Restlawn Memorial Park under the direction of Buck Ashcraft Funeral Home in Harlingen.
Pallbearers will be grandsons, Seth, Greg, Rusty, Sean, J.J., Beau, Keith, Jake and great-grandson, Brian. Honorary pallbearers will be former employees of Bilt-Rite Construction Co.
In lieu of flowers, the family respectfully requests that donations be made to the Alzheimer’s Association, RGV Chapter, 902 Morgan Blvd., Suite #2, Harlingen, TX 78550.

HARLINGEN — Daniel Hernandez, 83, passed away Friday, April 20, 2001 at Retama Manor Nursing Home. He was preceded in death by his wife Amelia Hernandez in 1980.
Survivors include sons, Hector (Lupita) Hernandez and Julian (Elena) Hernandez both of Harlingen also Ousbaldo (Ofelia) Hernandez of Brownsville; daughters, Yolanda Chavez and Elsa Hernandez both of Harlingen; 16 grandchildren; and eight great grandchildren.
Visitation was held on Friday with a rosary recited at 7 p.m. Funeral services will be on Saturday, April 21, 2001 at 2 p.m. at the Immaculate Heart of Mary with father Craig as celebrant. Buril will then follow to Ashland Cemetery.
Pallbearers will be Hector Hernandez, Julian Hernandez, Julian Hernandez Jr., Daniel Hernandez, Ronnie Hernandez, and Javier Gonzalez.
We loved him so much and he loved us. And we will miss him greatly.

Genaro Garza
DONNA — Genaro Garza, 66, passed away on Thursday, April 19, 2001 at his residence in Donna. Genaro was born August 5, 1934 in Guadalupe, Zacatecas Mexico.
Mr. Garza is survived by his six children; four sisters, four nieces, and two nephews.
A Funeral Mass will be celebrated at St. Joseph Catholic Church at 11 a.m., today, Saturday, April 21, 2001. Interment will follow at Val Verde Memorial Cemetery in Donna.

Aurelio Moreno, Sr.
RAYMONDVILLE — Aurelio Moreno, Sr., 86, passed away at his residence Friday, April 20, 2001. He was born Dec. 6, 1914 at San Luis, Potosi Mexico and had been a life long resident of Raymondville.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Herlinda De La Serna Moreno; one brother, Domingo Moreno; and one sister, Apollinia Sierra. He is survived by five sons, Pete (Mercedes) Moreno of Harlingen, George (Alberta) Moreno of Victoria, Aurelio Moreno, Jr. of Harlingen, Benito (Petra) Moreno of Lyford and Raul Moreno of Raymondville; five daughters, Mary Wilbanks of Hereford, Gloria (Hilario) Mireles of Victoria, Melba (Manuel) Zaragoza of Raymondville, Rose (Danny) Garcia of Raymondville and Guadalupe (Santos) Olvera of Victoria. Also surviving are two brothers, Tiburcio and Juan Moreno; 15 grandchildren and 16 great-grandchildren.
Pallbearers will be Robert Moreno, Hilario Mireles, Jr., Santos Olvera, Sr., Benjamin Moreno, Pedro Moreno, Jr. and Omar Alexis Moreno. A rosary will be recited Sunday at 7:30 p.m. at the Duddlesten Funeral Home Chapel. Funeral services will be on Monday at 11 a.m. at Our Lady of Guadalupe Catholic Church in Raymondville with burial in the Raymondville Memorial Cemetery. Arrangements are under the direction of Duddlesten Funeral Home of Raymondville.
Ferdinand C. Moench
HARLINGEN — Ferdinand C. Moench, Jr., 87, passed away Friday, April 20, 2001 at Valley Baptist Medical Center. Ferd was born on October 4, 1913 in Chicago, IL to Ferdinand C. and Laura M. (Dax) Moench.
Ferd moved with his parents to Valparaiso, IN in the late 1920’s. He served his country during World War II as a Crew Chief in the USAF and was honorably discharged in 1946. On August 2, 1969, he married M. Mae Steinway Ulsh, who survives him, in Valparaiso. Upon retiring in 1977, Ferd and Mae moved to San Benito, TX and moved to Camelot Retirement Village Independent Living Apartments in Harlingen after Ferd’s health began to decline. In mid-March of this year, they moved to Camelot Assisted Living in Harlingen. Ferd was a longtime member of the First United Methodist Church in San Benito and served on the Board of Trustees.
Also surviving Ferd are his loving family, Lynne Ulsh Taylor and her husband Doug of Richmond, VA, Gordon A. Ulsh and wife Laurie of The Woodlands, TX, Patricia Ulsh Fry and husband Ben of San Benito and Pamela Ulsh Sievers of Hooksett, NH; grandchildren, Lt. Scott Masterson, USCG, Jason Sievers and wife Amy, Aaron M. Sievers, Abbey M. Ulsh, Gordon A. Ulsh II and Beth Fry; great-grandson, Cameron Nathan Sievers; brother, John O. Moench and wife Mary; and three nephews and a niece in Florida.
Memorial services will be held at First United Methodist Church in San Benito at 2 p.m. Friday, April 27, 2001 with the Rev. Brad DeHaven officiating. Burial of Ferd’s ashes will be in Graceland Cemetery in Valaparaiso, IN at a later date.
The family requests that memorial donations may be made to the First United Methodist Church in San Benito or to the charity of choice.
Cipriana V. Gause
MISSION — Cipriana V. Gause, 96, passed away April 19, 2001 at Retama Manor Nursing Home in Raymondville, Texas.
Born in Matamoros, Mexico on November 18, 1904, Cipriana grew up in Brownsville and also lived in San Antonio as a young lady. She lived in Mission from 1953 to 1993. Cipriana was a housewife and loved a beautiful garden and could grow almost anything. She was very active in church work for many years.
Survivors include four daughters, Jean and (John) Macrini of La Marque, TX, Anna and (Gene) Smith of Raymondville, TX, Helen and (Clark) Spikes of Mission, TX and Rosalind and (Frank) McCormick of Raymondville, TX; 10 grandchildren and 23 great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Francis Leroy Gause in 1981; and two sons, David Arnold Gause and Richard Roy Gause.
Visitation will be held from 1 p.m. to 9 p.m. today, April 22, 2001 at Ric Brown Family Funeral Home in Mission. Funeral service will be held at 10 a.m. Monday, April 23, 2001 at Ric Brown Family Funeral Home in Mission. Officiating will be Father Roy Snipes of Our Lady of Guadalupe Catholic Church.
Pallbearers will be John Edward Macrini, Walter Smith, Jr., Ricky Gause, Robert Gause, Clifton Smith, Brian Rush, Steve Stites and Eric Vaello. Arrangements are under the direction of Ric Brown Funeral Home in Mission.
Alamar Lugo Solorio
RAYMONDVILLE — Alamar Lugo Solorio, 91, passed away at her residence Thursday, April 19, 2001. She was born Feb. 28, 1910 in Rio Grande City to Ramon and Lupe (Garcia) Lugo.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Octaviano Solorio; one daughter, Odulia Lopez; and one son, Rodrigo Solorio. She is survived by two sons, Oscar and Jesus Solorio, both of Raymondville; three daughters, Aurora (Zack) Gonzales, Gloria (Caesar) Rodriguez and Maria Viola Taylor, all of Raymondville; one son-in-law, Nestor Lopez of Arizona; and one daughter-in-law, Celia Solorio. She is also survived by numerous grandchildren and great-grandchildren.
A rosary will be recited Sunday at 7 p.m. at the Duddlesten Funeral Home Chapel. Funeral services will be Monday at 3 p.m. at Our Lady of Guadalupe Catholic Church in Raymondville with burial in the Raymondville Memorial Park Cemetery. Washington Lee, Sr.
HARLINGEN — Washington Lee, Sr. slipped into sweet repose at Valley Baptist Medical Center in Harlingen, Texas on the evening of April 17, 2001.
Brother Washington Lee was born on November 19, 1938 to Willie and Betsey Lee of Cottageville, SC. He attended Jericho Elementary School and Cotton High School of Walterboro, SC. Washington joined the U.S. Marine Corps and served honorably for over 28 years. Throughout his tenure in the Marine Corps, he received numerous awards, including Rifle Expert Badge (13th award), Presidential Unit Citation, Vietnam Service Medal (3rd Award), Combat Action Ribbon and the Republic of Vietnam Armed Forces Meritorious Unit Cross of Gallantry W/P & F. While serving in the Marine Corps, he was a Combat Engineer, Drill Instructor and Infantry Unit Leader. After retiring as a Master Sergeant from the Marine Corps, he moved to Harlingen, Texas; thus continuing his stellar career at the Marine military Academy. Washington received two Associates Degrees from Texas State Technical Institute. To help him pass the time after completely retiring, Washington started shining shoes at Coastal Bank in San Benito, Texas. He truly enjoyed life as a father, husband, brother, uncle, friend and soldier. Washington had a "heart" as big as Texas. Early in life, he professed Jesus Christ as his savior and joined Bethel Baptist Church in San Diego, CA. He was an active member of the Corinth Missionary Baptist Church and the Brotherhood.
He is survived by his wife, Beatrice Lee of Harlingen; one daughter, Marilyn D. Lee of Taegu, Korea; granddaughter, Yazmine Lee-Lungs of Taegu, Korea; son-in-law, Antoine Robinson of Killeen, TX; grandson, Marcelis Robinson of Killeen, TX; sister, Mrs. Eliza (James) Sanders of Cottageville, SC; brother, David (Sally) Lee of Spiro, OK; two sisters-in-law, Nora Y. (Bishop J.V.) Porter of Fayetteville, NC and Isabella Wilson of Harlingen, TX; three brothers-in-law, Collin (Frankie) Yarbrough of San Diego, CA, S.T. (Martha) Yarbrough of Town Creek, AL and John A. Yarbrough of Harlingen, TX. He is also survived by a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, other relatives and friends. He was preceded in death by his son, Washington Lee, Jr. and daughter, Lakecia Lee-Robinson.
Visitation hours will be held from 1 p.m. to 9 p.m. Monday, April 23, 22001 at Buck Ashcraft Funeral Home.
Funeral services will be held at Corinth Missionary Baptist Church in Harlingen at 5 p.m. Tuesday, April 24, 2001 with the Rev. Riley Rice and Rev. N.L. Washington officiating. Interment services will be held in Walterboro, SC at the Heavenly Rest Cemetery on Saturday, April 28, 2001. Arrangements are under the direction of Buck Ashcraft Funeral Home.

HARLINGEN — Daniel Hernandez, 83, passed away Friday, April 20, 2001 at Retama Manor Nursing Home. He was preceded in death by his wife Amelia Hernandez in 1980.

Frank Romo Sr.
SAN BENITO, TX — Frank Romo, Sr. passed away on Wednesday, April 18, 2001 in Harlingen. Frank was born December 5, 1948 in Waco, Texas to Baldomero and Julia Romo. He married Rosie Olvera Romo on April 20, 1991.
He was preceded in death by his father Baldomero Romo Sr. in 1999.
Survivors left to cherish his memory include his beloved wife, Rosie O. Romo; sons, Sergio Romo of San Benito, Frank Romo Jr. of Waco, Francisco, Anthony, and Johnny Romo all of San Benito; his daughter, Christie of San Benito, and Yvette Fierro of Belton and his mother, Julia Romo of Waco; a sister, Rose Torres and her husband, Edward Torres of Waco; brothers, Baldomero Romo Jr. of Nogales, Arizona, Johnny Romo of Waco, Raul R. Romo of Sunnyvale, California, and Daniel Romo of Waco. Five grandchildren, and numerous nieces and nephews; aunts and uncles; cousins, and his many good friends.
Frank was dearly loved, his memories are forever etched in our hearts.
A Holy Rosary will be held Friday at 7 p.m. at the Thomae Funeral Chapel on 701 N. Bowie St., San Benito
Funeral Mass will be officiated Saturday, April 21, 2001 at 10 a.m., St. Joseph Catholic Church with burial to follow at Mont Meta Memorial Park, San Benito, Texas.
Serving as pallbearers will be Joe Mesa, Johnny Romo, Joe Mendoza, Edward Torres, David Olvera, and Daniel Romo.
military Honors are under the direction of American Legion Post #205 V.F.W. Post #2410 of Harlingen, Texas.
