Doris Pauline Faggard
HARLINGEN, TX — Doris Pauline Faggard, 80, passed away Saturday, February 3, 2001 in Valley Baptist Medical Center. Doris was born on April 28, 1920 in Deming New Mexico.
Doris was a member of the B.P.O. Does, and attended the 8th & Harrison Church of Christ Church in Harlingen. Doris was a longtime resident of Harlingen.
Doris was preceded in death by her husband, D.J. Faggard and is survived by her daughter, Karen Babington of Springfield, Virginia; son, Dan Faggard of Kansas City, Missouri; sister, Norma Lawrence of Oklahoma City, Oklahoma; brother, Coy Cutright of Oklahoma City, OK; and Cat, Sissy.
Memorial services will be held Wednesday, February 7, 2001 in Sunshine Country Club Estates Lounge at 1 p.m. with Jake Vinsant officiating. In lieu of flowers the family request memorials be made to the American Heart Association.
Funeral arrangements are under the direction of Buck Ashcraft Funeral Home.
Inez Brulay White
BROWNSVILLE ,TX — Inez (Tita) Brulay White, born on August 7, 1918 in Brownsville, passed away February 4, 2001 at Valley Regional Hospital.
She was preceded in death by her husband of 53 years, Milton J. (Mike) White. Her parents, Louis and Inez Brulay, her sister, Lucie B. Scroggins, and her nephew, Richard L. Scroggins.
She was a life time member of Church of the Advent. She served as president of the Women of the Church several times, and painted casscarones for the church. She was instrumental in forming many social organizations in Brownsville for adults as well as teenagers. She started the Gay Nighters Dance Club and the Seraka Club. She was a member of the Brownsville Junior Service League.
Survivors include her four children and their spouses, Mickey and Janet White, Bob and Charlotte White, Ginger and Walter Pawkett, and Marilyn and Steve Labuda all of Brownsville; seven grandchildren, several cousins and nephews.
Honorary pallbearers will be Jimmy Brittian, Rufus Stewart, David Duncan, Lester Buck, Barry Putegnat, Roy Winans, Henry Havre.
Pallbearers will be John Williamson, Norberto Perez, Robert Swantner, Buddy Fischer, Sherman Lee, Jerry Adams, and Larry Jokl.
Funeral services will be held at 3:30 p.m., Tuesday, February 6, 2001 at the Church of the Advent, Episcopal, 104 W. Elizabeth Street, with Rt. Rev. James E. Folts and Rev. Art Bevins officiating. Burial will be at Buena Vista Burial Park.
Contributions can be made in her name to the Church of The Advent, 104 W Elizabeth St., or the Episcopal Day School, 34 Coria Street, Brownsville, Texas 78520.

Petra Garza Martinez
MERCEDES, TX — Petra Garza Martinez, 67, passed away Sunday at her residence.
She was preceded in death by her husband Alfredo Martinez, Sr., four children, Concepcion Garza, Maria Luisa Martinez, Domingo Martinez, Nora Islas, her mother, Maria Trinidad Garcia, her father, Alfonso Garza, and a sister, Dora G. Garza.
Mrs. Martinez is survived by nine sons, Alfredo Martinez, Jr., Roberto Martinez, Jose Cermenio, Erasmo Garza, Lino Martinez, Francisco Martinez, Jose Angel Martinez all of Mercedes, Adolfo Garza of Fort Worth, Juan Navor Garza of North Carolina; four daughters, Oralia Cantu, Mary Alamar Garza, Irene Garza all of Mercedes, Maria Guadalupe Vela of Brownsville; a brother, Salvador Garza of Mercedes; two sisters, Martina Delia Rodriguez and Julia G. Garza both of Mercedes; also surviving are thirty-six grandchildren and twenty great grandchildren.
Funeral services will be at 2 p.m. Tuesday at Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Mercedes, interment will follow at Mercedes Memorial Restlawn also in Mercedes.

Matilde Alfaro Betancourt
RIO HONDO — Matilde Alfaro Betancourt, 91, most beloved "Ama" and "Wuela" as she was known by all, went to be with the Lord at Valley Baptist Medical Center on Saturday, Feb. 3, 2001.
"Ama" was born on June 8, 1909 in Sinton, Texas to Fidela Alfaro and Tomas Betancourt. She is preceded in death by her parents, Fidela and Tomas. Also by one daughter, Guadalupe Rodriguez.
She is survived by three sons, Ignacio (Raquel) Rodriguez of Abilene, Texas, Francisco (Rosie) Garcia Jr. of Rio Hondo and Jesus Garcia of Harlingen; four daughters, Maria Carmona, Santos Guajardo, Fidela Rodriguez and Alicia (Gary) Scarborough all of Rio Hondo. Also surviving are 28 grandchildren, 38 great grandchildren and two great great grandchildren. She is also survived by her extended family and many many good friends. "Ama" will be greatly missed by all those who surrounded her with so much love and attention.
Visitation will be held on Monday, Feb. 5, 2001 at San Benito Funeral Home from 10 a.m. to 9 p.m. with a prayer service at 7 p.m.
Funeral services will be held on Tuesday, Feb. 6, 2001 at First Baptist Church in Rio Hondo at 2 p.m. with burial to follow at Mont Meta Memorial Park.

Irene C. Gonzalez
SANTA ROSA — Irene C. Gonzalez, 48, entered into rest on Feb. 2, 2001 at her residence in Santa Rosa.
She is survived by her husband, George Gonzalez of Santa Rosa; three sons, Alejandro Olivarez Jr. of Santa Rosa, Sammy (Hilda) Olivarez of Harlingen, and Noel Olivarez of Santa Rosa; two daughters, Maria Guadalupe Martinez of Missouri and Monica Martinez of Santa Rosa. She is also survived by one granddaughter, Amanda Olivarez of Harlingen; two brothers, Arturo Canales of Harlingen and Ruben Canales of Santa Rosa and one sister Esmeralda Jimenez of Santa Rosa.
The funeral procession will depart the Rudy Garza Funeral Home today, Monday, Feb. 5, 2001 at 1:30 for a 2 p.m. mass of Christian burial at St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Santa Rosa with Deacon Genaro Ibarra officiating. Interment will follow at Santo Nombre Cemetery.
Pallbearers will be family members and friends.

Professor Bruce Underwood
BROWNSVILLE — Professor Bruce Underwood, 86, a native of Brownsville and one of the most distinguished educators in Texas, died Thursday, February 1, 2001, at Valley Regional Medical Center.
Born in Tulia, Texas, in 1914, he was the son of Alta Bruce Underwood, a piano teacher, and Walter West Underwood, a banker and the owner of the Underwood Cafeteria in Brownsville. The Underwood family came to Brownsville from Madisonville, Texas, in 1927.
After being graduated in 1930 as Salutatorian of Brownsville’s El Jardin High School, Underwood earned a B.S. in Journalism from Southern Methodist University in 1934, a master’s in Education Administration from Stanford University in 1954, and a Ph.D. in Journalism from the University of Missouri in 1965. A Lyndon B. Johnson Research Fellow in Mexico between 1962 and 1964, he was awarded one of the first Fulbright-Hays Lectureships, which brought him to the Universidad de Navarra, Spain. Over three decades, he held appointments at numerous universities, including the University of Houston, Cornell, Temple, Pan American, Pace, and Iona. From 1993 until 2000, he was an adjunct professor at the University of Texas-Brownsville. He also served in the United States Air Force, receiving his commission in 1944 and retiring from the reserve as a Lieutenant Colonel in 1974.
Underwood’s professional contributions to the Rio Grande Valley were varied. In the mid 1930s, he served as a reporter for the Dallas Daily Dispatch and as publisher of the Mercedes News-Tribune. Upon returning from Stanford, he became principal of the Lyford, Texas, elementary schools and then the Sam Houston Elementary School in Harlingen. In 1938, he was appointed Superintendent of the El Jardin Independent School District in Brownsville. Returning to Brownsville in 1983 with his wife, Carol, who died in 1996, Underwood, who received awards from the Rio Grande Valley Press Club and the Rio Grande Valley Writers’ Guild, wrote and edited for numerous Valley publications, including the Brownsville Weekly Times and the Rio Grande Valley Business Journal. Bilingual, Underwood also taught E.S.L. at Pace High School.
He is survived by three children: Elizabeth, a graduate of Stanford University; Dr. Thomas A. Underwood, a tutor in the Department of History at Harvard University, and Walter, a recent graduate of the University of Texas at Austin.
Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Monday, February fifth, at the Church of the Advent, Episcopal, 104 W. Elizabeth Street, with the Rev. Art Bevins officiating. Burial will follow at Buena Vista Burial Park.
Pallbearers will include Jack Yonge, Rev. George W. Graydon, Carolyn Kizer, and Linda Forse.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests that memorial donations be mailed to the Bruce Underwood Communications Scholarship, c/o Dr. Tony Zavaleta, University of Texas-Brownsville, Brownsville, Texas.
Emilia F. Salinas
SAN BENITO — Emilia F. Salinas, 75, entered into rest on Sunday, February 04, 2001. She was born in Villanueva, Texas on March 4, 1925 to Manuel Flores and Teodora Herrera.
Ms. Salinas is survived by three daughters, Esmeralda Rodriguez of Dallas, Eustolia Trevino of Grande Prairie, Texas and Guillermina (Minnie) Salinas of San Benito; son, Hernan Salinas of Arlington, Texas; two brothers, three sisters, nine grandchildren and 17 grandchildren. She is preceded in death by her parents, Manuel Flores and Teodora Herrera, husband, Pedro Salinas and son, Pedro Salinas Jr.
Visitation will be on Monday, Feb. 05, 2001, from noon to 9 p.m. with a rosary at 7 p.m.
Funeral service will be held on Tuesday, Feb. 06, 2001, 10 a.m. at St. Theresa Catholic Church. Burial will then follow at Mont Meta Memorial Park.

SAN BENITO, TX — Funeral services for Francisco Hernandez Govea, 59, passed away to eternal rest on Saturday, April 21, 2001 at his residence, will be officiated on Tuesday, April 24, 2001 at 10 a.m. at St. Benedict’s Catholic Church. Burial will follow to San Benito City Cemetery.

Maria Guadalupe (Lupita) Reyes
RIO HONDO, TX — Maria Guadalupe (Lupita) Reyes, life-long resident of Rio Hondo, entered into eternal rest on Saturday, April 21, 2001. She was born on June 29, 1932. She worked as a caring and dedicated nurse at Dolly Vinsant Hospital for 15 years. She was an active member of Iglesia Presbiteriana Getsemani.
She is survived by her loving husband, Esequiel; daughters, Maria Galvan of Rio Hondo, Gloria Magana (Juan) of Weslaco, Celia Reyes (Eliseo) of Rio Hondo; step-children, Esequiel Reyes, Jr. of San Antonio, Esther Leal of San Benito, Ismael Reyes of Brownsville, Eliseo Reyes of Rio Hondo and Jose Reyes of Connecticut; brothers, Jose and Roberto Perez of California, Juan and Ramon Perez of Rio Hondo, Agustin and Jesus Perez of Mercedes; sisters, Antonia Perez of Rio Hondo and Ana Galvan of San Benito; 13 grandchildren and 9 great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her father, Agustin Perez, mother, Remedios Perez and sister, Jovita Rangel.

Rolando Espinosa
HARLINGEN, TX — Rolando Espinosa, 61, entered into eternal rest on April 21, 2001 in Houston, TX. He was a native of Harlingen, Texas. He had resided in Corpus Christi, Texas for 3 years where he had graduated from Roy Miller High School in 1959 and had resided in Reno, Nevada for 20 years. He was a U.S. Navy Vietnam Era veteran serving from 1959 to 1968.
He is survived by his son, David and Jill Espinosa from Virginia Beach, Virginia; brother, Rodolfo and Pat Espinosa from Houston, Texas; 3 sisters, Maurine and Robert Garza of Houston, Texas, Mary Inez Garza and Adalia Espinosa both of Corpus Christi, Texas; and numerous nephews and nieces.
A Rosary was recited on Monday, April 23, 2001, at 7 p.m. at Mont Meta Restlawn Cox Funeral Home Chapel "A".
Mass will be celebrated today, April 24, 2001 at 10 a.m. at Immaculate Heart of Mary Catholic Church, Harlingen, Texas.
Entombment will follow at Restlawn Memorial Park Mausoleum in La Feria, Texas. military graveside service will be under the auspices of the V.F.W. Post 2410 and American Legion Post 205.

RAYMONDVILLE — Gloria Hernandez Cruz, 56, passed away at McAllen Comfort House Sunday morning on April 22, 2001. She was born Aug. 29, 1947 in Raymondville to Guadalupe L. and Nicolasa (Perez) Hernandez. Gloria is survived by her husband, Doroteo Cruz of Raymondville; three sons, Luis H. and Cruz H. Cruz both of Raymondville and Victor H. Cruz; daughter, Corina C. Capatillo of Brownsville; brother, Daniel Hernandez of Harlingen; and 12 grandchildren.
