RAYMONDVILLE — Pablo Garcia, 33, passed away on August 5, 2000, at his residence in Raymondville. He was born on September 7, 1966, in La Harpe, ILL to Mr. and Mrs. Pedro Garcia.

He is survived by his parents Pedro Garcia, Maria Leija; and stepfather, Raul Perez; wife, Guadalupe Gomez Garcia of Raymondville; sisters, Maria (Orfael ) Rosas of Houston, Melissa (Joe) Muniz of Raymondville; brothers, Pedro Garcia Jr., of Raymondville, Miguel Garcia of Houston, Joe (Brenda) Leija of Raymondville, Julian and Felipe Beserra of Raymondville; 12 nieces and nephews and numerous other relatives.

Pallbearers will be Domingo Reyna III, Pedro Garcia Jr., Miguel Garcia, Felipe Beserra, Joe Leija, and Joe Muniz.

Visitation was held on Monday, August 7, 2000, and Tuesday August 8, 2000, from 10:00 a.m. until 9:00 p.m. with a holy rosary recited both evenings at 7:30 p.m. Visitation today will be from 8:00 a.m. until 9:30 a.m. at which time the funeral procession will depart Hernandez Funeral Home for a 10:00 a.m. funeral mass at Our Lady of Guadalupe Catholic Church in Raymondville.

Funeral arrangements are under the direction of Hernandez Funeral Home in Raymondville, 689-2402.

Robert Garza

HARLINGEN — Robert Garza Sr., 68, went to be with the Lord on Monday, August 7, 2000. Robert was born on January 4, 1932. He was a lifelong resident of Harlingen; he attended Harlingen Schools and graduated from Harlingen High School in 1952. Robert was a well-known car salesman in the Harlingen area, most recently having worked at L. T. Boswell Ford in San Benito. He was an avid sportsman, participating as a coach for several years in Pony League baseball. He was a Harlingen Cardinal fan as well as a fan of many NFL teams. Robert also enjoyed going hunting and fishing. His enthusiasm for these sports was past on to his sons, grandsons and sons-in-law.

Robert was preceded in death by his parents, Matias and Lillie Garza.

He is survived by his loving wife of forty-six years Enriqueta Garza of Harlingen; his five children, Cynthia (Rolando) Mendiondo, Alma (Fred) Rodriguez, and Margaret (Eloy) Alvarez all of Harlingen, Robert ( Anna) Garza Jr., of McAllen and Matt Garza from Austin, TX. He is also survived by nine grandchildren, Marc, Michael, Randall, Bobbie Jean, Tracey, Leslie, Andy and Eric and by one sister Daisy Jane (Eward) Muniz of Harlingen.

Visitation will be held today, August 9, 2000, from 10:00 a.m. until 9:00 p.m. at the Rudy Garza Chapel of Peace with a Christian service to be held at 7:00 p.m. Funeral services will be held on Thursday, August 10, 2000, at 9:00 a.m. at the Rudy Garza Funeral Home with Juan Salinas, Minster officiating. Interment will follow at Restlawn Memorial Park Cemetery in La Feria.

Pallbearers will be Rolando Mendiondo, Fred Rodriguez, Eloy Alvarez, Marc Mendiondo, Andy Alvarez and L. A. Guzman.

Robert will be remembered by his family and friends as an honest and hard working man. Dad we love you, forever.

Carlos Ortiz

SAN BENITO — Pastor Carlos Ortiz, went to be with his Lord Jesus on August 5, 2000, at the age of 56. Pastor Ortiz was born in Aguadilla, Puerto Rico and was raised in New York City where he fought in a rival gang to that of Nicki Cruz. God dramatically saved him and called him into the ministry when he was a long-haul trucker in 1973. He was an Evangelist for 15 years before he began pastoring Faith Pleases God Church in 1988. This growing church of over 1000 families now reached the entire Spanish speaking world through its La Familia Television Network. The FPG program is heard over a growing network of television stations, satellites and numerous cable systems, covering the US Canada, the Carribean, Mexico, Central America, parts of South America and 101 nations of Europe and West Africa.

Pastor Ortiz’ vision to reach the 650 million Hispanics worldwide with the gospel of Jesus Christ Continues on as a living legacy. He is survived by his wife, Pastor Aracelis Ortiz of San Benito,  Texas; four sons, Carlos Jr., of Harlingen, Pastor Clark Ortiz of San Antonio; Kevin Ortiz of San Benito and Mark Eleven twenty three Antonio Ortiz, currently a student are Rhema Bible School in Tulsa  Oklahoma; one daughter, Julie Bridge of San Antonio; four brothers, Juan Raymond Ortiz (Florida), Hector (Puerto Rico), Anibel (Florida) and Alberto (New York); one sister, Martha Pena (NewYork); 10 grandchildren; mother-in-law, Julia Torres (Rio Hondo); sister-in-law, Juana McCavera (Dunnellon, Florida); sister-in-law, Minnie Jacobson (Harlingen); brother-in-law, Angel Louis Torres (Rio Hondo).

Funeral home visitation will start Tuesday, August 8, 2000, at 11:00 a.m. with a Christian service at 7:00 p.m. at the San Benito Funeral Home, 1400 W. Hwy 77, San Benito. Services will be held on Wednesday, August 8, 2000, at 9:00 a.m. at Faith Pleases God Church 4501 W. Expressway 83, in Harlingen with a graveside service immediately following at Mont Meta Cemetery in San Benito. Pallbearers will be Sam Juarez, Juan Salinas, Raymond Ortiz, Fred Rodriguez, Bond Crosby, Joey Gonzalez, Michael Tellez and Eddie Chavez.

Magdalena R. Rivera

MERCEDES — Magdalena R. Rivera, born on July 22, 1909, passed away on Sunday, August 06, 2000, at her residence surrounded by family members at her bedside. She was a lifelong resident of Mercedes. She was a homemaker and member of Our Lady of Mercy Catholic Church in Mercedes.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Jose L. Rivera; a daughter, Sylvia (Henry) Guajardo and a son, Carlos Rivera.

Ms. Rivera is survived by four daughters, Zoila Rodriguez, Raquel Guajardo of Weslaco, Mary (Judge Homer) Salinas and Yolanda (Albert) Guajardo all of Mercedes; 23 grandchildren, 49 great grandchildren, nine great great grandchildren and Mari Tavarez, a very close member of the family.

Mrs. Rivera was a loving mother and grandmother and will be greatly missed.

Pallbearers are Carlos Guajardo, Richard Rodriguez, Samuel Rodriguez, Angel Pina, Michael Kelley and Jorge Manzano.

Honorary pallbearers are Joel Guajardo, Enrique Guajardo Jr., Paul Michael Kelley, Hilario Pena and Ronald Peynado.

Funeral services are under the direction of Mont Meta Restlawn Cox Funeral Home of Harlingen. Visitation will be held on Monday, Aug. 7, 2000, at McCaleb Funeral Home Chapel in Weslaco from 10 a.m. until 9 p.m. with a rosary to follow at 7 p.m.

Church services and burial will be on Tuesday, Aug. 8, 2000, at 2 p.m. at Our Lady of Mercy with interment to follow at Highland Memorial Park.

Floral donations to be delivered at McCaleb Funeral Home on Monday.

Joe M. Chapa

LA SARA — Joe M. Chapa, 79, a lifetime resident of La Sara, passed away Saturday, Aug. 5, 2000, at his home. He was born Sept. 26, 1920 in Donna to Gregorio and Ygnacia (Flores) Chapa. Joe M. was a WW II Veteran who served in the Pacific. He is survived by four nephews, Eddie R. (Christela) Chapa Sr. of Raymondville, Gregorio (Juanita) Chapa of Elsa, Bobby (Eloisa) Chapa and Jesus (Cindy) Chapa both of La Sara; two nieces, Olga C. (Jose M.) Chavez of La Sara and Maria Ignacia C. (Nick) Munguia.

He was preceded in death by his wife Julia T. Chapa and two brothers, Gregorio Chapa Jr. and Joe E. Chapa.

Visitation will be at the Duddlesten Funeral Home Chapel today, Monday, Aug. 7, 2000, from 10 a.m. to 9 p.m. with a holy rosary at 7 p.m. Funeral services will be on Tuesday, Aug. 8, 2000, at 4 p.m. at St. Patrick Catholic Church in La Sara. Burial will follow at the La Sara Cemetery under the Auspices of American Legion Post #205 and 390 and VFW Post #2410 and 6719 of Harlingen and Raymondville.

Pallbearers will be Eddie R. Chapa Jr., Max R. Chapa, Noel Chavez, Luis Chavez, Jason Chapa, Joshua Chapa and Romero Munguia.

Funeral arrangements are under the direction of Duddlesten Funeral Home.

Ruth S. Rios

RAYMONDVILLE — Ruth S. Rios, 89, passed away Saturday, August 05, 2000, at her residence. She was born March 25, 1911 at El Paso,  Texas to Daniel and Luz (Ramos) Sierra. Ruth was preceded in death by her husband Benjamin Rios and is survived by one brother, Jaime (Estella) Sierra of Monterey, N.L., three sister, Minerva S. Olivares of Puebla, Mexico, Olgha (Robert) Sandman of Chicago, ILL., and Martha S. Trevino of Mexico City, Mexico; one daughter, Laura Epple and one son Benjamin Rios Jr., both of Raymondville; five grandchildren; and three great grandchildren.

A prayer service will be held Sunday evening at 7:30 p.m. and funeral service will be held on Monday, Aug. 7, 2000, 10:30 a.m. at Duddlesten Funeral Home Chapel with burial to follow at Raymondville Memorial Cemetery.

Funeral arrangements are under the direction of Duddlesten Funeral Home.

Elodia Balli

HARLINGEN — Elodia Balli, 76, went home to be with the Lord Aug. 5, 2000. She was born Aug. 31, 1923 in Donna,  Texas to Apolinio and Gregoria Balli whom have preceded her in death in 1970 and 1989 and also by a brother Jaime Balli in 1951.

She is survived by four daughters, Carlos and Bertha Rosales, Gerd and Rosalinda Owens both of Harlingen, Javier and Ana Escamilla of Irving, TX and Carl and Amanda Smith of LA. Also survived by nine grandchildren and three great grandchildren.

Visitations will be held today beginning at 1 p.m. until 9 p.m. with recitation of the Holy Rosary to be prayed at 7 p.m. in the Chapel of the Holy Spirit at Trinity Funeral Chapel.

Funeral arrangements are under the direction of Trinity Funeral Chapel.

Agapito "Pete" Rodriguez

OHIO — Agapito "Pete" Rodriguez, 91, passed away Wednesday, Aug. 2, 2000 at Wood County Hospital in Bowling Green, Ohio.

He was born September 16, 1908 in Paso Real,  Texas to Guadalupe Rodriguez and Dionicia (Peralez) Rodriguez. Pete retired from Claude Sintz in Deshler, OH.

He is preceded in death by a brother, Pedro Rodriguez.

He is survived by special caregiver Jesse Rodriguez of Deshler, OH; five sisters, Isabel Hinojosa of Royce City, Rita Garza, Rosa Rodriguez, and Mary Lou Benavidez all of Rio Hondo, Lupe Ferreira of Wauseon, OH; five brothers, Gregorio Rodriguez of Brownsville, Gonzalo Rodriguez of Rio Hondo, Juan Rodriguez of San Benito, Seferino Rodriguez of Rio Hondo and Jesus Rodriguez of Baytown.

Services at Immaculate Conception Catholic Church in Deshler, OH. Friends are invited to call Friday from 2 p.m. to 4 p.m. and 7 p.m. to 9 p.m. at Rodenberger Funeral Home, Inc. Deshler, OH.

Rosary services were held Friday at Rodenberger Funeral Home, Inc. A mass of Christian burial was celebrated at Immaculate Conception Catholic Church on Saturday with Fr. Paul A. Fahrbach officiating.

Francisca (Quica) Guerra Carbajo

LOS ANGELES,  Calif. — Francisca (Frances/Quica) G. Carbajo, 55, entered into eternal rest July 29, 2000, at City of Hope, in Durate,  Calif., after a lengthy battle with Cancer.

She was born Oct. 4, 1944, and was a resident of Los Angeles, CA. for the past 27 years. She is survived by her husband, Miguel Carbajo, her son, Stewart (Sylvia) Carbajo; her daughter, Myrna Elizabeth (Jose) Barahona, and a granddaughter, Karen Elizabeth Barahona, all of Los Angeles, CA.

She is also survived by her mother, Juanita D. Guerra, and her brothers and sisters, Homero (Elena) Guerra, Ruben (Rosie) Guerra, Ramiro (Adela) Guerra, all of Harlingen, Beva (Juan) Valdez of Irving, TX; Connie (Arturo) Palacios of Irving, Raul (Gloria) Guerra of San Antonio and Nellie (Pablo) Bejaran of Harlingen, and several nieces and nephews.

She is preceded in death by her father, Raul Guerra.

Funeral mass was celebrated Tuesday, Aug. 1, 2000 at 11 a.m. at St. Alphonsus Catholic Church in Los Angeles, CA. Burial followed at the Resurrection Cemetery in Montevello, CA.

Pallbearers were members of her family.

Lidia M. Cavazos

PRIMERA — Lidia M. Cavazos, 45, born on April 2, 1955 in Valle Hermoso, Tamaulipas, Mexico entered into eternal rest on Aug. 5, 2000 at Valley Baptist Medical Center. She had worked with McDonald Restaurant for 3 years.

Preceded in death by her father Toribio Martinez in 1998, and by one sister Alicia Martinez in 1975.

She is survived by her mother Librada Martinez of Harlingen; husband, Rafael Cavazos of Primera; three sons, Carlos De La Rosa, Rafael Cavazos III, and Santana Cavazos all of Primera; one daughter, Patricia De La Rosa of Irving,  Texas; four brothers, Jesus Martinez and Juan Jose Martinez both of Valle Hermoso, Tamaulipas, Mexico, Toribio Martinez of Driscoll and Abelardo Martinez of Harlingen; one sister, Rosa Elia Vega of Abilene; and four grandchildren.

Funeral visitation will be held today at 10 a.m. until 9 p.m. at Mont Meta / Restlawn / Cox Funeral Home Chapel "A" with prayer service at 7 p.m.

Funeral services will be held on Monday at 2 p.m. at Mont Meta / Restlawn / Cox Funeral Home with Hilario Longoria officiating.

Interment will follow to Mont Meta Memorial Park.

Pallbearers will be Rafael Cavazos, Rafael Cavazos III, Carlos De La Rosa, Jesus Martinez, Toribio Martinez, and Abelardo Martinez.

Funeral services are under the direction of Mont Meta/Restlawn/Cox Funeral Home.

Bernice F. Metzger

ARLINTON — Bernice F. Metzger, 82, passed away at her daughters residence in Arlington on August 2, 2000. She was born April 7, 1918 in Independence, Kansas. She lived in the Rio Grande Valley since 1928, living in Harlingen for many years.

She is survived by her son, David W. Metzger, Jr. of Harlingen; a daughter, Melody Metzger Keller of Arlington; a grandson, Maxwell Metzger of Salt Lake City, Utah; and a granddaughter, Nicole Holland of Arlington.

No local services will be held. In lieu of flowers memorials may be made to the Alzheimer’s Association, Rio Grande Valley Chapter, P.O. Box 533493, Harlingen, TX 78553-3493.

Funeral arrangements are under the direction of Heritage Funeral Home in Grapevine,  Texas.
