Robea Fletcher
Services for Robea Fletcher, 84, of Jacksonville, and formerly of Palestine, will be at 2 p.m. Saturday in First Church on the Hill in Rusk with the Rev. Jan Pats officiating. Burial will be in Pleasant Grove Cemetery under the direction of Wallace-Thompson Funeral Home in Jacksonville.
Mrs. Fletcher died Thursday at her home.
She was a resident of Jacksonville for 20 years. She was a homemaker and member of First Church on the Hill in Rusk.
Mrs. Fletcher was preceded in death by her husband, Roy Fletcher; and a daughter, Judy Gruetzner.
She is survived by sons, Raymond Fletcher of Waco, Ben Fletcher of Lindale, Royce Fletcher and Joe Fletcher, both of Jacksonville; daughters, Jean Thomas of Palestine, Mary Fletcher and Kathy Fletcher, both of Jacksonville; brothers, Dee Coslett of Delta, Colo., Clint Coslett and Bill Coslett, both of Alabama, Bob Coslett of Jacksonville, Jim Coslett of Hillsboro and A.C. Coslet Jr. of Delta, Colo.; sister, Ruth Fowler of Jacksonville; 17 grandchildren; and 24 great-grandchildren.
Pallbearers will be grandsons.
Visitation will be from 6 to 8 p.m. today at the funeral home.
Cynthia Skinner
Funeral arrangements for Cynthia Ann Hutchins Skinner, 52, formerly of Palestine, are pending at Herrington/Land of Memory.
Mrs. Skinner died this morning at Hospice Home Place in Tyler.
Charles Stuart Kendrick
Services for Charles Stuart Kendrick, 75, of Athens will be at 2 p.m. Tuesday in the chapel of Foster & Brown Funeral Home of Athens. Burial will follow in Oaklawn Memorial Park.
Mr. Kendrick died Friday in Athens.
He was born Feb. 17, 1927, in Palestine to Stuart and Ardell Montgomery Kendrick.
Mr. Kendrick was a member of Grace United Methodist Church of Palestine. He served in the U.S. Navy and was retired from Lone Star Gas Co., after 47 years.
He was preceded in death by his son, Charles Michael Kendrick, in 1998; and his wife, Rosemary Calcote Kendrick, in 2000.
Mr. Kendrick is survived by his mother of Palestine; daughter, Carol Holder of Athens; four grandchildren and one great-grandson.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the American Cancer Society or the American Heart Association.
Glenda Mitchell Saunders
Services for Glenda Mitchell Saunders, 62, of Frankston, will be at 10 a.m. Tuesday at Thompson Funeral Home Chapel in Frankston.
Mrs. Saunders died Saturday at Frankston Health Care Nursing Home.
She was born Sept. 25, 1939 in Palestine.
Mrs. Saunders was a homemaker and a Presbyterian.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Brady Saunders; and a sister, Clara Jean Mitchell.
Mrs. Saunders is survived by a son, Kelly Saunders of Frankston; daughter, Staci Smith of Frankston; mother, Clara Mitchell of Palestine; sister, Patricia Walker of Fincastle; and five grandchildren.
Visitation will be from 6 to 8 p.m. today.
James O. Lindsey
Services for James O. “Jimmy” Lindsey, 42, of Guy, and formerly of Alto, were held Saturday at Brookside Memorial Park in Guy with the Rev. Jack Bell officiating.
Mr. Lindsey died March 30.
He was born April 24, 1959 in Alto to L.T. and Ester Lindsey.
Mr. Lindsey was a lifelong resident of Alto until he moved to Guy three years ago. He was a carpenter.
He was preceded in death by his parents; and a sister, Becky.
Mr. Lindsey is survived by his wife, Janis Sue Lindsey of Guy; stepsons, Darrell W. Beard Jr. and Christopher A. Beard, both of Guy; and two grandchildren.
James Turner Allen
Funeral arrangements for James Turner Allen, 72, of Grapeland, are pending at Bailey & Foster, Grapeland.
Mr. Allen died Sunday at his home.
Rev. John Lunsford Hobson
Services for the Rev. John Lunsford Hobson, 94, of the Denson Springs community, will be at 2 p.m. Thursday at Muse Baptist Church with the Revs. Davy Hobson and Danny Watkins officiating.
Burial will follow in Providence Cemetery under the direction of Bailey & Foster.
The Rev. Hobson died at 12:30 p.m. Tuesday at his residence after a lengthy battle with cancer.
He was a member of Muse Baptist Church.
The Rev. Hobson was preceded in death by his wife, Gladys Collins Hobson; father, John Thomas Hobson; mother, Susie Hill Hobson; brothers, Pearson Hobson and Wesley Hobson; sisters, Ruby Hobson, Della Hobson Easley and Louise Hobson Treadway; and granddaughter, Carrie Hobson.
He is survived by daughter, Mildred Posey of Harlington; sons, Anderson County Sheriff John Hobson and Jim Hobson of Houston; brother, Granville Hobson of Rusk; sisters, Emma Lou Huddleston of Elkhart and Avis Hobson Starkey of Victoria; seven grandchildren; and numerous great-grandchildren and great-great-grandchildren.
Pallbearers will be Bill Hobson, Don Hobson, Jimmy Corbin, Jerry Don Simms, Charles Abernathy and Preston Lively.
Honorary pallbearers will be the Revs. Davy Joe Hobson and John Lockler.
Condolence calls will be received from 5:30 to 7 p.m. today at the funeral home.
Benjamin Lusk Sr.
Services for Benjamin Lusk Sr., 87, of Berkley, Calif., and formerly of Oakwood, will be at 11 a.m. Friday at Mount Pilgrim Baptist Church in Oakwood with the Rev. James Johnson officiating.
Burial will follow in Shiloh-Mount Pilgrim Community Cemetery in Oakwood under the direction of McCoy Funeral Home.
Mr. Lusk died July 29 in Berkley, Calif.
He was born Feb. 16, 1915 in Oakwood to Oliver and Hattie Johnson Lusk.
Mr. Lusk was a member of Shiloh AME Church and was educated at St. Paul Shiloh School and Prairie View A&M University. He moved to California in 1941 and was employed by the ILWU Local No. 10 Longshoreman’s Union in San Francisco.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Eula Echols Lusk; brothers, Abner, Oliver Jr., Freddy and Charlie; sisters, Jimmy Lee Gilmore and Charity Lee Gipson; and a grandson, Kenneth D. Lusk.
Mr. Lusk is survived by sons, Benjamin Lusk Jr., Thomas Lusk, Gregory Lusk, David Lusk and Billy Brown; daughters, Evelyn Godfrey, Judy Lusk, Sandra Washington, Susan Johnson, Joan Crawley, Mary Jones, Alicia Wesley and Carmelia Ervin-Robinson; brother, Thomas Lusk; 30 grandchildren; 32 great-grandchildren; and one great-great-grandson.
Pallbearers will be James Earl Gilmore, James Gilmore Jr., Robert Gilmore, Paul Lusk, Phillip Lusk and Phillip Williams.
Honorary pallbearers will be Eric Bailey, Sean Lusk, Thomas L. Lusk, LaMarr McNeal, James Washington Jr. and Terrance Williams.
The body will lie in state from 10 a.m. to 8 p.m. Thursday at the funeral home.
Billy Howard Churchman
Services for Billy Howard Churchman, 70, of Oakwood, were set for 2 p.m. Thursday at Taylor Funeral Home Chapel in Timpson with Jimmy Nix officiating. Burial followed in Corinth Cemetery in Timpson.
Mr. Churchman died Monday.
He was born Oct. 16, 1931 in Spiro, Okla to Guy William and Eva Kelsey Churchman.
Mr. Churchman was a retired master gunnery sergeant for the U.S. Marines. He served in the Marine Corps from 1953 to 1978 with a tour of duty during the Korean War and three tours during the Vietnam War. He was a member of the Assembly of God Church.
He was preceded in death by a brother, Kelsey Max Churchman; and a sister, Merle Denton.
Mr. Churchman is survived by his wife, Virginia Acrey Churchman of Oakwood; sons, Wayne Churchman of Mesa, Ariz., Michael Churchman of Vista, Calif., Arlin Churchman, Max Churchman and Joe Churchman, all of Oakwood; daughter, Regena Frazier of Raleigh, N.C.; sisters, Mary Ann Scott of Brazoria and Sherry Frazier of Center; seven grandchildren; and one great-grandchild.
Pallbearers were Max Churchman Jr., Kyle Churchman, Bobby Tinkle, Joe Acrey, David Garrison and Andy Hudman.
Mary Ballard Locke
Memorial services for Mary Ballard Locke, 97, of Beaufort, S.C., and formerly of Palestine, will be held at a later date.
Mrs. Locke died Tuesday at her residence.
She was born July 15, 1905, in Vernon, Ind. to Olive and John Ballard.
Mrs. Locke was an executive secretary for the vice president of Tenneco and retired at age 65. In April 1979 she went to work for the Houston Post. She retired from there at age 90. She was a member and treasurer of Beta Sigma Phi in Houston for 30 years.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Clyde F. Locke, on Oct. 31, 1959.
Mrs. Locke is survived by two grandchildren, Mary Kay Howe and Michael Locke, both of Beaufort; six great-grandchildren; and three great-great-grandchildren.
If desired, memorials may be sent to Hospice of the Low Country in Beaufort.
Robert E. Jordan
Services for Robert E. Jordan, 85, of Palestine, were at 3 p.m. today at Bailey & Foster Chapel with the Rev. Fred Neal officiating. Burial followed in Roselawn Park.
Mr. Jordan died Monday at Palestine Regional Medical Center.
He was born March 28, 1917 in Palestine to Ben F. and Rosa Pettit Jordan.
Mr. Jordan was a member of the First Methodist Church. He retired from TP&L with 45 years of service as a district engineer. He served in the U.S. Air Force during World War II.
He was preceded in death by four sisters, Evelyn Dupree, Beatrice Scarbrough, Clarice Ward and Jennie Selden; and a brother, W.B. Jordan.
Mr. Jordan is survived by his wife, Margaret Jordan of Palestine.
L.D. Funderburk
Services for L.D. Funderburk, 88, of Shady Acres, Lake Palestine East, were at 1 p.m. today at the County Line Baptist Church in Bullard with the Rev. Tom Pesnell officiating. Burial was in the Funderburk Family Cemetery near Palestine under the direction of Thompson Funeral Home, Jacksonville.
Mr. Funderburk died Sunday at a Tyler hospital.
He was born March 22, 1914 in Anderson County.
Mr. Funderburk was a process operator for Tenneco for 21 years. He was a Baptist.
He is survived by his wife of 65 years, Lois England Funderburk of Shady Acres, Lake Palestine East; sons, Victor Funderburk of Sunnyvale, Calif., Stanley Funderburk of Lufkin, and Terry England of Bullard; daughters, Jeanne Melendez of San Antonio, Janita Perkins of Bullard and Dixie Rutledge Perkins of Brenham; brother, Carlton “Jack” Funderburk of Palestine; sister, Mildred Young of Palestine; 15 grandchildren; and 10 great-grandchildren.
Pallbearers were Mike Melendez, Bryan Perkins, Scott LaRoe, Perry Gibson, Jade Rutledge and Troy Dancer.
J.Q. “Bub” Walston
Services for J.Q. “Bub” Walston, 55, of Palestine, were at 10 a.m. today at Bailey & Foster Chapel with the Rev. Fred Neal officiating.
Mr. Walston died Monday at his home.
He was born Oct. 8, 1946 in Anderson County to J.W. and Lillian Modine Knight Walston.
Mr. Walston was a brakeman with the railroad for 26 years.
He was preceded in death by his parents; and a sister, Virginia Nash.
Mr. Walston is survived by his wife of 36 years, Linda Walston of Palestine; daughters, Denice Rutledge of Elkhart and Donna Blythe of Palestine; sisters, Sue Yorgensen of Jewett, Linda Kay Manning of Fort Worth, Nelia Lewis of Trinidad, and Dorothy Jean Lankster of Wildwood, Ga.; and four grandchildren.
Honorary pallbearers will be Delbert Cavender, Lanny Collett, James Young, R.E. McDonald, Butch Travis and Clay Shugart.
