GILMER - Graveside services for Kate McClendon, 80, of Gilmer will be held at 10 a.m. Friday at Rose Hill cemetery in Fort Worth with Dr. Robert H. Cupps officiating. Mrs. McClendon, who was born Aug. 24, 1917, in Gilmer, died Tuesday in Tyler. Survivors include a sister and brother-in-law, Janet and Kenneth Baker of Gilmer. Visitation is 5:30-7:30 p.m. today at Croley Funeral Home.

Elizabeth McLaughlin
KILGORE - Mrs. Elizabeth Howard James McLaughlin died recently at her residence in the Danville community near Kilgore, Texas. Mrs. McLaughlin was born on April 27, 1908, the daughter of David James Sr. and Mary Hawthorne Davidson James of Ruston, La. She was the granddaughter of Benjamin and Elizabeth Lewis James of Junction City, La., and Professor John Hawthorne and Mary Howard Davidson of Homer, La. On June 19, 1931, she and James McLaughlin Sr. married
in Homer. Mrs. McLaughlin is survived by a son and daughter-in-law, James McLaughlin Jr. and Dr. Darlene Warrick McLaughlin of Austin and Elgin, Texas; a daughter, Mary McLaughlin Aikman of Kilgore; a brother and sister-in-law, David James Jr. and Jane Bogart James of Minden, La.; two grandsons and their wives, James Patrick and Kelly McLaughlin of Conroe, Texas, and Timothy David and Valerie McLaughlin of San Rafael, Calif.; two great-grandchildren, Bailey Jean McLaughlin and Boone James McLaughlin, both of Conroe; a nephew and his wife, David James III and Barbara James of Humble, Texas; and a niece and her husband, Ruth Margaret James Washburn and Walt Washburn. Preceding her in death were her husband; three sisters, Mary James of Ruston and Ruth James and Sara James Correll, both of Shreveport, La.; and a granddaughter, Dora Ann Aikman of Kilgore. Mrs. McLaughlin, a member of the First Presbyterian Church of Kilgore, had resided in the Kilgore area since 1931. She was also a member and had served as an officer of the Civic Garden Club, the Kilgore Council of Garden Clubs, the New England Chapter of the Colonial Dames of the XVII Century and the Samuel Paul Dinkins Chapter of the National Society of the Daughters of the American Revolution. A memorial service for Mrs. McLaughlin will be held at 11 a.m. on Saturday, March 7, 1998, at the First Presbyterian Church in Kilgore. Memorials may be made to the First Presbyterian Church of Kilgore.

N.R. 'Ray' Purvis
KILGORE - Services for N.R. "Ray" Purvis, 92, of Kilgore will be held at 2 p.m. Friday, March 6, 1998, at the Chapel of the First Baptist Church in Kilgore with the Rev. David Hampton officiating. Burial will follow in the Kilgore Memorial Gardens. Arrangements are under the direction of Rader Funeral Home of Kilgore. Mr. Purvis died Wednesday, March 4, 1998, at his residence. He was born March 17, 1905, in Purvis, Miss., the eldest of six children. He was a 1932 graduate of Mississippi State University. Mr. Purvis served in the U.S. Coast Guard in World War II and returned to employment with Gulf Oil Corp. as an operator, retiring after 27 years of service. He was a member of the First Baptist Church of Kilgore, where he was in the Masters Class. Mr. Purvis was also a member of the Masonic Lodge and the American Legion. Mr. Purvis is survived by his son and daughter-in-law, Nathan W. and Judith Purvis of Kilgore; three grandchildren, Mary Nixon of Irving, Texas, Jennifer Purvis of Waco, Texas, and Jeri Ellen Largent of Nacogdoches, Texas; four great-grandchildren, Lauren Blankenship, Justin Largent, Tiffani Nixon and Cristen Nixon; a sister, Mabel Johnson of Crossett, Ark.; and several nieces and nephews. Mr. Purvis was preceded in death by his wife, Lois Purvis. Memorial contributions may be made to the American Cancer Society, Hospice of Longview and Mission Funds at the First Baptist Church in Kilgore.

GILMER - Services for Gustine Hill Shaw, 85, of Gilmer will be held at 2 p.m. Friday, March 6, at Croley Funeral Home Chapel with Brother Glen Dunaway and Brother Wilton Jones officiating. Burial will be in Sand Hill cemetery. Mrs. Shaw died Wednesday, March 4, 1998, in Gilmer. She was born Sept. 16, 1912, in Upshur County, where she lived all her life. She was a homemaker and a member of Sand Hill Baptist Church. Mrs. Shaw was preceded in death by her husband, Lorenza Shaw, on March 13, 1997; two sisters, Felice Jones and O'Bera Jenkins; and two brothers, G.C. Hill Jr. and Alene Hill. Survivors include two daughters and sons-in-law, Peggy and Jim Gatlin of Bastrop and Angie and David Elwood of White Oak; five grandchildren; and 13 great- grandchildren. Pallbearers will be Jerry Putnam, Eddie Shaw, David Humblin, Max Hill, Pete Williams and Bobby Royce Jones. Honorary pallbearers will be Danny Berry, Leroy Guest, Glen Parson, Forest Nugent, Mitch Archer, Hugh Hamilton, Curtis Shaw, Vernon Tevebaugh, David Tevebaugh, Ronald Tevebaugh, Ellis Hagler, Verl Hagler, Berle D. Shaw, Ben Bane, Truman Johnson, J.B. Hill and Buddy Hill. Visitation is 6-8 p.m. today, March 5, at the funeral home.

Edmund 'Joe' Stewart
HUGHES SPRINGS - Services for Edmund "Joe" Stewart, 67, of Avinger will be held at 3 p.m. today, March 5, at the Avinger United Methodist Church with the Rev. Walter Magouyrk, the Rev. Loyd Holt and the Rev. Dale Carter officiating. Interment will follow at Avinger cemetery under the direction of Reeder-Davis Funeral Home of Hughes Springs. Mr. Stewart died Tuesday, March 3, 1998, in Hughes Springs. He was born July 24, 1930, in Avinger. In 1947, he was named all-state and was a member of the Avinger state championship basketball team. He will be remembered as an avid fan and supporter of the game of basketball. Mr. Stewart served in the U.S. Air Force during the Korean War and was a member of the Avinger United Methodist Church. He is survived by his wife, Barbara Stewart of Avinger; five daughters, Phyllis Brickley of Austin, Patty Kelly of Austin, Pam Bates of Houston, Angel Stewart of Ore City and Renee Colbert of Longview; one son, Larry Dunn of Hughes Springs; and 12 grand- children.

Richard E. Williamson Jr.
DALLAS - Richard E. "Big Daddy" Williamson Jr. of Longview passed away March 3, 1998. He was retired from the Water Department of the City of Dallas and a member of the First Church of Christ Scientist 2nd Church of Dallas. Mr. Williamson was preceded in death by his wife, Dorothy A. Williamson. He is survived by a daughter, Ann Lloyd Brown of Longview; his grandsons, George A. Lloyd and Keith E. Lloyd, both of Longview; a granddaughter, Janice Lloyd Tucker of Longview; six great-grandchildren; and four stepgrandchildren. Graveside services will be held at 11 a.m. Friday, March 6, at Restland Memorial Park. Arrangements are by Restland Funeral Home on Greenville Avenue.

GLADEWATER - Services for Rodgers Edwards Cannon, 46, of Gladewater are set for 11 a.m. Saturday in St. James Baptist Church in the Red Rock community with the Rev. Tommy Austin officiating. Burial will follow in Red Rock Community cemetery under the direction of Dearion & Davis Funeral Parlor of Gladewater. Born Sept. 2, 1951, Rodgers was a 1971 graduate of Gladewater High School. He served in the Air Force for 15 years and was a member of St. James Baptist Church. He died March 4, 1998, in an automobile accident in White Oak. The body will lie in state at the funeral parlor noon-8:30 p.m. today. The family will receive friends at the home of Rodgers' sister, Alice Timmons, 501 Eddie St., in Gladewater, phone 845-3251. Survivors include his daughters, Shay Cannon of Nacogdoches and Nicole Sheaths of Dallas; his sisters, Helen Crain of White Oak, Bobbie Thompson and Alice Timmons of Gladewater, Winnie Foster and Janice Cannon of Dallas, Linda Poole of Alabama, Eva Austin of Desoto and Lawynett Tennison of Gilmer; his brother, Charles and Kenneth Cannon of Dallas; his grandchildren; and a number of aunts, uncles, nieces, nephews and cousins.

Mrs. McCracken was born July 8, 1925, in Coleman County, Texas, and had been a resident of Longview since 1982, coming from Odessa. She had retired as a sales- lady at Dillard's department store and was a member of Macedonia Baptist Church. Mrs. McCracken was preceded in death by her husband, Paul W. McCracken, and a granddaughter, Emily McCracken. Survivors include her daughter, Paula J. McCracken Tullos of Longview; two sons, Don McCracken of Hallsville and Tommy McCracken of Ben Wheeler, Texas; a brother, E.B. "Blue" Templeton of Bandera, Texas; two sisters, Gloria Yelek of Pagosa Springs, Colo., and Jewell Thomason of Temple, Texas; three grandchildren; and one great-grandchild.
