Powledge

Robert Vernice Powledge was born on September 21, 1914 in Grimes County Texas, and died on May 10, 2008, at the age of 93.

The third of four sons born to Charles Robert and Sallie Mae Marsh Powledge in Grimes County, he married Rosa Wells in 1932. He was preceded in death by his parents and brothers, Barnes, Earl, and Grady Powledge, and “Rose”, who passed away in 1996. He was also predeceased by his two son-in-laws, Robert Robinson, and James Mouton, and one daughter-in-law, Dalene Powledge. He is survived by their six children, James R. Powledge of Matagorda, Robbie Mouton of Houston, Bud (V.R.) and Frances Powledge of Houston, Jerry and Jennifer Powledge of Liberty, Janice and Ronnie Cochran of Pearland, and Joe and Mary Powledge of Highlands. Six grandchildren: Jimmy Mouton, Jr., Becky Powledge, Barbara and Ricky Stevens, Kathy Mouton, Linda and David McKay, Jeff Powledge, and Melissa and Darren Hunt. Eight great- grandchildren: Bryan and Brent Stevens, Meghan, Amber, Lindsey, and Ryan McKay, and Payton and Meredith Roberts. He is also survived by numerous cousins, nieces and nephews.

“Pete” as he was known to many, was a 60-yr. member of Gus A. Brandt Masonic Lodge No. 1296, and member of the Houston Scottish Rite. He was a member of the First Baptist Church of Liberty for 20 years. He was also one of the founding members of Woodforest Baptist Church in Houston. “Pappaw”, as his grandchildren and great-grandchildren called him, worked as a millwright at the Port of Houston during WWII. He was drafted four times by Uncle Sam, but due to his skills, received four deferments. His employer personally appealed to the draft board each time he received a notice. He was a highly skilled cabinet maker and millwright, and was co-owner of MacDougal and Powledge Millworks. Some of his work included installing block paneling, window sashes, etc. in several law offices in downtown Houston. He also built his own house on Halifax Street in Houston. When pre-fabricated particleboard cabinets became popular, he and his partner were forced to close their shop, which they had opened after WWII. He also worked for, and retired from, the Port of Houston, and was a member of the Clerks and Checkers Local #1351, of the International Longshoremen’s Association.

After retirement, he and Rose moved to their lake house (another house he built) on Lake Granada in Moss Bluff for a year or two, before settling in Liberty in the 1980’s. They enjoyed traveling, and were able to visit most of the 50 states, as well as eastern and western Canada. Their main love, though, was spending time with their family and friends.

Pete was a devout Christian, very intelligent, full of “common sense”, and of impeccable character. He was a man of his word, whose ethics and high moral standards earned him the admiration and respect of all who knew him. He was slow to anger and quick to forgive, and never criticized another person. He was an avid sportsman, and enjoyed fishing and hunting, but loved quail hunting most of all. He owned, bred, and trained pointers, and always had good bird dogs to hunt behind. He had a great sense of humor, and enjoyed playing practical jokes on an unsuspecting family member or friend. A big baseball fan, he especially loved the Astros, and enjoyed traveling to the games when Ron Davis would take a group to see them.

Visitation will be from 5:00 to 8:00 PM on Monday, May 12th, at Allison Funeral Home in Liberty, Texas, with graveside services officiated by Ron Davis, and Masonic services conducted by Harry Stark at Concord cemetery, outside of Iola, in Grimes County on Tuesday, May 13th, at 2:00 PM. Honorary pallbearers are: Jimmy Mouton, Jeff Powledge, Tim Cochran, Troy Cochran, Ricky Stevens, Darren Hunt, and David McKay.
