Matthews
Lula Mae (Smith) Matthews, 83, of Anahuac, Texas died peacefully surrounded by her family Tuesday, July 29, 2008 after a long courageous battle with cancer.
She was born on October 26, 1924 to Don and Ada Smith in Kaufman, Texas. Lula was known for her love of flowers, especially her beautiful azaleas. She was the first female member of the Anahuac Lions Club. She held many offices of Anahuac Chapter 649 Eastern Star, including District Deputy. She retired as Post Master of Monroe City after 26 years of service. Lula was a member for 60 years and taught Sunday School at First Baptist Church of Anahuac.
Lula was preceded in death by her parents; sisters, Roxie Moulder, Okalena Prescott and Verlan White; and brother, Harvey Smith. She is survived by her loving husband of 65 years, W.M. (Billy) Matthews, Jr.; sons, W.M. (Bill) Matthews III and wife Nell of Longview, Texas and Robert L. (Bob) Matthews and wife Amber of Houston, Texas; grandchildren, David and Karen Matthews of Baytown, Texas, Susan Boudreaux of Crosby, Texas; Sandra and Rick Ysassi of Baytown, Texas; W.M. (Matt) Matthews of Dallas, Texas; Amy and Corbin Amman of Houston, Texas; and Dennis Warren of New Diana, Texas; great-grandchildren, Brittany, Justin, Chris, Cody, Emily, Braden, Leah, Kaylee, Seth, and Kyle; sisters, Celeste Hyde and Ada V. Culpepper; brothers, James Smith and Sam Smith; and numerous other relatives and friends.
A visitation for family and friends will be from 6:00 until 8:00 o’clock in the evening Thursday, July 31st at Sterling Funeral Home in Anahuac. A service of remembrance will be held at 11:00 o’clock in the morning Friday, August 1st at First Baptist Church of Anahuac with interment to follow in Anahuac cemetery. Funeral Service for Pearlie B. Edwards Chambers, 85, of Liberty, will be held Saturday, August 2, 2008 at St. Miles Baptist Church, at 11 A.M with the Reverend Hurley Hampton, officiating with burial in Wells Memorial cemetery.
A native of Liberty, she was a domestic worker, student of Liberty Training High School, a member of the Lily of the Valley Baptist Church, she died Saturday, July 26, 2008 at Liberty Health Care Center, Liberty, Texas.
Visitation will be held from 9 A.M. until time of service at the church.
She is survived by two daughters: Bernadine Dials of Raywood and Beatrice Wallace of Lafayette, Louisiana; one brother: Earnest “Brew” Edwards of Liberty and a host of other relatives and friends.
Cadoree
Funeral Service for Barbara Sue Cadoree, 61, of Hankamer, Texas will be held Saturday, August 2, 2008 at St. Mary’s Baptist Church, at 11 A.M, with burial in Wells Memorial cemetery under the direction of Wells Funeral Service, Liberty, Texas.
A native of Devers Texas, she was a domestic worker.
She died July 27, 2008 at Memorial Hermann Hospital Houston after an illness.
Visitation will be held from 9 A.M. until time of service at the church.
She is survived by her husband, Clifford L. Hardy of Hankamer, one son: Martin C. Cadoree of Baytown, Texas; three daughters: Shelley M. Cadoree and Shawndra Cadoree, both of Baytown and Letha E. Owens of Channelview, five sisters: Judy Shadowens-Walker and Alice Owens both of Houston, Texas, Mary J, Smith and Patricia Smith, both of Baytown, Betty Thidbodeaux of Beaumont, Texas and a host of other relatives and friends.
Daves
Harry G. Daves, Jr., 84, of Old River-Winfree, died on Monday, July 28, 2008 at his home.
He was born on September 17, 1923 in San Bernardino, California, a son of Sallie Robertson (Shannon) and Harry Grady Daves, Sr.
He grew up in Baytown, where he attended Robert E. Lee High School. Following his graduation, he volunteered for the U.S. Navy during World War II and served in their amphibious division. He made five major beachhead landings during the war, earning a Purple Heart, a Silver Star, a Navy & Marine Corps Commendation Medal and numerous other medals for his service.
After his return from the Navy, he was married
in 1946 to Jeffie Herron of Highlands, and they made their home in Old River-Winfree, where they raised their two daughters, Louise and Bess Ann. He went to work that same year at Exxon’s Baytown Refinery working as a machinist in the mechanical division.
After 31 years with the Baytown Refinery, Harry retired in 1977 to work on his farm and ranch. He also became a volunteer to many historic preservation groups in the area. These included the Wallisville Heritage Park, where he served faithfully on the board of directors; the Chambers County Historical Commission, where he most recently served as chair of the historical cemeteries committee; the Liberty County Historical Commission, where he oversaw the ringing of the Liberty Bell on special occasions; and as chaplain of Spaight’s Battalion Camp #858, Sons of Confederate Veterans. He was also an ordained Southern Baptist minister.
He was extremely proud of his service as president of the Jacob Shannon Evergreen cemetery in Dobbin, Texas, a burial ground established by his great-grandfather in 1840. He was a great-great-grandson of American Revolutionary War Veteran Owen Shannon and his wife Margaret Montgomery, pioneer settlers of the old Lake Creek Settlement in Montgomery County.
He was preceded in death his parents; his daughter Louise Daves; and his brother Rev. John M. Daves.
Survivors include his wife, Jeffie; his daughter, Bessie Ann; his sisters, Kay Mitchell and BeBe Armstrong; and by his granddaughters, Louise’s daughter Heather Frazier and Bess Ann’s daughter Candace Cherry.
The family wishes to thank Dr. Luis E. Gonzalez-Fraga and his staff, Faith Community Hospice, and caregiver Belinda Blair for their many kind deeds over the course of Harry’s illness.
The family will receive friends Thursday, July 31, 2008 from 5:30 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. at Navarre Funeral Home.
Funeral services will be Friday, August 1, 2008 at 10:00 a.m. at Navarre Funeral Home with Rev. Danny Biddy officiating. A Graveside services will follow at 2 p.m. at the Jacob Shannon Evergreen cemetery in Dobbin.

Joshua Wayne Brewer 36, of Dayton died Monday July 28, 2008 in Kenefick due to an automobile accident.
He was preceded in death by his Father; Clovis Brewer, Stepfather; Augustus Wilson and nephew; Shannon Brewer.
Survivors are his Mother; Nettie Wilson of Dayton, Wife; Alicia Brewer of Dayton, Son; Clovis Wayne Brewer of Dayton. Daughter; Haylie Michelle Brewer of Dayton, Brothers; Calvin ”BO” Brewer of Cut-N-Shoot, John Brewer of Dayton, Sisters; Susie Williams and husband Nelson of Dayton, Roxie Vandver and husband James of Tarkington Prairie. Funeral service will be held Thursday July 31, 2008 at 3:00 P.M. At Kenefick Southern Baptist Church, the family will be receiving friends also Thursday beginning at 10:00A.M. Until time of service. Interment will follow at Greenville cemetery of Kenefick.

Adams
Sherral E. Adams, age 55, died Friday, July 25, 2008 at her home in Dayton, TX.
A memorial service will be held at a later date. Sherral was born on July 7, 1953 in Dayton, TX., to Amos Irvin Moore and Clara Bell Batchelor Moore. She attended schools in Dayton, and was a member of the Baptist Church. Sherral enjoyed dancing, camping, visiting with her friends and family to tell stories, cooking and watching TV.
Sherral is preceded in death by her father: Amos I. Moore, and is survived by her mother: Clara Simmons, a brother: Luther Moore, of Dayton, a sister: Shelia Eileen Neale of Navasota, TX., and a son: Cecil Ray Mitchell Jr.

Dorothy Jane Long, age 82, of Dayton, TX., died in Liberty Healthcare Center, Saturday, July 26, 2008.
Funeral services will be held on Wednesday, July 30, 2008 at 10:00 A.M., at the Allison Funeral Service Chapel 1101 North Travis Street, Liberty, TX., with David Castle officiating. Dorothy was born on December 1, 1925, in Lamesa, Dawson County, Texas, to Andrew Jackson Richardson and Lena Mae McClenny. She graduated from Liberty High School in 1943, Business College in Odessa, Texas and later attended Lee College. Dorothy was an Elder, a Sunday school teacher and a youth leader in the First Presbyterian Church of Liberty. She was a floral designer and owner of Colonial Flower Shop for years. Dorothy was a bookkeeper and licensed Bonds Woman. She used her talents to help the community through the years. She was a member of the Beta Sigma Pi, the American Business Women, the Liberty Art League, the Liberty-Dayton Chamber of Commerce, and she taught in the Adult Literacy Reading Program. She enjoyed painting, sewing, gardening, and writing.
Dorothy is preceded in death by her parents, a husband: Jack Loftis, and a sister: Joyce Jones Hines. The survivors are a husband: Valry Newton Long of Dayton, TX., Children: Glenda and Jerold Williams of Dayton, TX., Roy and Dianna Loftis of Fort Stockton, TX., Don and Donna Loftis of Albuquerque NM., Rhonda Kaye Loftis and partner, Kris York of Medford OR., a sister: LaNelle Townley of Arlington, TX., seven grandchildren: Amy Kirchoff, Beau Mitchell, Robert Loftis, Jason Loftis, Greg Williams, Kevin Williams, and Brandon Williams, six great grandchildren, and a host of other family members and friends.

Carolyn Faye Reeves 57, of Dayton died Thursday July 24, 2008 at her residence.
A native of Liberty TX she had lived in Dayton and was a homemaker.

Jena S. Crites Patterson, 37, of Coldspring, died Friday, July 25, 2008, at her residence.
Funeral services will be held at 2:00 p.m., Monday, July 28, 2008, at the Pace-Stancil Funeral Home Chapel with burial following at Ryan cemetery in Tarkington Prairie. Visitation will be held from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m., Sunday, at the funeral home. Services are under the direction of Pace-Stancil Funeral Home in Dayton.
Jena was born May 4, 1971 in Houston, to parents; Jimmy Crites and Cora Sue Howarter, was a former resident of Crosby, and has resided in the Coldspring area for the past eight years. She was a homemaker, a high school graduate from Houston, and enjoyed her children, the outdoors, and going to the beach.
Mrs. Patterson was preceded in death by her father: Jimmy Crites. She is survived by her daughter: Jenay Patterson of Mt. Stelly
John Thomas Stelly, 58, died on Friday, July 18, 2008 in his residence.
He was born in Lafayette and resided in Hayes. He was an avid hunter and fisherman.
Survivors include his wife, Lola Irene Stelly; parents, Summa Lee Stelly and Pansy Susan Stelly; sons, John Stelly Jr. and wife, Tonya, of Hardin, TX, Summa Stelly and wife, Jennifer, of New Orleans, LA, Eric Stelly and wife, Christina, of Grand Chenier, LA; step daughters, Charla Richards of Oregon and Karen Barker and husband, Don, of West Virginia; brothers, Stephen Stelly and Dee Stelly, of Winnie, TX, Marc Stelly and Judi Moore of Mauriceville, TX, David Stelly and wife, Candy, of Baton Rouge, LA; and 6 grandchildren.
His funeral will be 2:00 p.m. on Sunday, July 21 at Hixson Funeral Home in Lake Charles. Burial will be in Hayes cemetery under the direction of Hixson Funeral Home of Lake Charles. Visitation will be Saturday evening from 5-9 p.m. and again on Sunday from 8 a.m. until the time of service.

John D. “Monkey” Henry, 33, of Dayton, died Friday July 18, 2008 in Pasadena.
Memorial Services to be held 4:00 p.m., Saturday, August 2, 2008, at Hot Rods and Hogg’s Club located at 706 N. Watson Road Arlington, Texas. Arrangements for Mr. Henry are under the direction of Pace-Stancil Funeral Home in Dayton, Texas.
John was born August 13, 1974 in Friona, to parents, John and Barbara J Burdick Henry. A former resident of Mesquite, he had resided in the Dayton area for the past six weeks. He was a crane operator for Deep South Crane and Rigging of Louisiana, a member of the local 450, the Hot Rods and Hogg’s Club and enjoyed riding motorcycles.
Mr. Henry was preceded by his parents. He is survived by his wife Bonnie A. Shortt-Henry of Dayton, his dogs, Buddy and Xena, numerous other relatives and friends. A Memorial Service will also be held in Batesville, Arkansas at 2:00 p.m. on August 17, 2008 at Qualis Batesville Funeral Service. Interment will follow where his final resting place will be beside his mother.

Blackmon
Joseph Joshua Blackmon, 64, of Liberty, died on July 21, 2008 at the Liberty/Dayton Community Hospital.
There will be a visitation at the Allison Funeral Service, 1101 North Travis in Liberty on Wednesday, July 23, 2008 from 5p-8p. Funeral services will be held on Thursday, July 24, 2008 at 1 P.M. at the funeral home with Roger Blackburn officiating. Burial will follow in Cooke Memorial cemetery in Liberty.
Joseph was born on August 10, 1943, in Silsbee, Texas, to parents, Henry Mark Blackmon and Jessie Lillie Hall Blackmon. He graduated from Silsbee High School and attended Blinn College. He married
Judy Darnell Reeves in 1965. Joseph was a fireman in Houston, Texas for twenty years. He then held the office of Emergency Management Coordinator for Hardin County for eight years. He recently owned and operated Smokey Joe’s BarBQ in Liberty and Silsbee. He enjoyed hunting, fishing, camping and most of all spending time with his friends and family.
Joseph was preceded in death by his parents, two brothers, Ray Blackmon and Edward Blackmon, two sisters, Marie Thomas and Dorothy Faye Moody.
He is survived by his wife Judy Blackmon, son, Mark Blackmon, daughter, Kendra Blackmon, grandchildren, Zach and Hannah Blackmon, brothers, Nathaniel Blackmon, Paul Blackmon, sisters, Ruth Ward, Rachel Mansfield, Lois Durham, Mary Ellen Sirmons and Lyndal Blackmon.
