Smith
On Sunday morning, July 10, 2016, Terry Allen (Rusty) Smith died at Memorial Hospital in Lufkin, TX after an eighteen year battle with cancer while being watched over and comforted by his sister and brother-in-law.
He was sixty-two years old. Terry was born in Liberty, TX on October 14, 1954 to Emmitt and Lucille Smith.
Terry was the third child and second son.
He graduated from Liberty High School and went on to the University of Houston to earn a Bachelor of Science Degree in Technology Computer Engineering in 1994.
Terry’s many interest included photography, forestry, music, history, movies and reading.
Most importantly, Terry was a Christian and kept his faith in God. He kept his sense of humor and with only a few well-chosen words at precisely the correct time would produce an uproar of laughter.
It didn’t really matter to him where or when he chose to do so. When he agreed with you he always used his favorite saying “You got that right”.
We were never sure if he liked to be called Rusty as he always introduced himself as Terry Smith.
The reason we never really knew is he never complained about anything, no matter how bad it was.
Terry was an engineer at Schlumberger. He was a dedicated and hard worker with a positive attitude and worked until his illness made it impossible to continue.
His friends at Schlumberger were just as sad as he was when this time came.
Still wanting to have some independence he chose to live at the Gardens of Livingston, an assisted living facility, for fifteen years.
Terry was preceded in death by his parents; Emmitt and Lucile Smith.
He leaves behind to cherish his memory, sister; Sandra Jackson and husband H.D. of Liberty, TX, brother; Larry Smith and wife Lillian of Rogers, AR and numerous aunts, uncles, cousins, nieces and nephews.
In lieu of flowers, the family respectfully request donations may be made to MD Anderson Cancer Research.
Special thank you to the Gardens Assisted Living in Livingston, TX for their dedicated care to Rusty.
Also an appreciation to Hospice in the Pines in Lufkin, TX for their care of Rusty. With a special note of dedicated appreciation to the staff at Hospice In the Pines for their gentle care of Rusty.
