Smikal
Jerry George Smikal, 77, of Eastgate, died Friday, December 18, 2016, at his residence.
Visitation will be held from 5 p.m. to 8 p.m., Tuesday, at the funeral home. Funeral services will be held at 2:00 p.m., Wednesday, December 21, 2016, at the Pace-Stancil Funeral Home Chapel with burial following at St. Anne’s Catholic cemetery in Eastgate. Services are under the direction of Pace-Stancil Funeral Home in Dayton.
Jerry was born July 2, 1939 in Dayton, to parents; Antone and Bessie Vyoral Smikal, and has been a lifelong resident of Eastgate. He was a cherry picker operator for Brown and Root and had also been employed by the Liberty County Water District as a dragline operator before retiring. He also enjoyed hunting, fishing, his cattle, tractor work, and his dogs.
Mr. Smikal was preceded in death by his parents, wife of 39 years: Erlene B. McCarter Smikal, and all of his siblings: Steve, Bill, Emil, Albert, Marion, and Jessie Smikal, Frances Young, Agnes Kowis, Mary Symoheyl, Mildred Brannan, and Toni Janik. He is survived by his daughter: Amy Wallette and husband Everett of Kenefick, son: Terry Graham and wife Debbie of Eastgate, grandchildren: Candice Piffer and Brandi Pope, great-granddaughter: Zoey Grace, nephew: David Smikal and wife Mandy, numerous other relatives, and friends.

McManus
Mr. Dennis Gayle McManus, 62, a lifetime resident of Wallisville, Texas, died Wednesday, December 14, 2016 in Winnie, Texas.
He was born on September 13, 1954 in Woodville, Texas to John “Baby” and Marcell Davis McManus. Dennis graduated from Anahuac High School class of 1973, where he played football, basketball and ran track. Dennis was also the Area IX president of the FFA and was on the debate team. After graduating, he attended Lee College. He worked for Chambers County in the maintenance department for many years, among other things. Dennis was a worker.
Dennis was a member of Middleton Memorial United Methodist Church in Wallisville. Dennis loved nature and enjoyed being outdoors. He would volunteer at the National Wildlife Refuge, He enjoyed gardening and riding his bicycle. Dennis loved people and never met a stranger. He enjoyed joking and making people smile. He was compassionate and cared for his fellow man, never wanting anyone to be sad. He didn’t want others to struggle with enjoying the good this in life. If you were struggling to feed your family, he would give you what he could. It might have been the lemons and oranges or even the grapefruit from the trees that surround his family home. If that wasn’t enough he would bring you several buckets of cumcuats, but most of the time a big hug and a smile made everything better. If you met Dennis once, you would never forget him. He left an everlasting mark on your heart. Dennis was loved by all whom crossed his path.
Dennis was preceded in death by his parents. He leaves behind to cherish his memory, his siblings Carol McManus of Wallisville, David McManus and wife Jennifer of Wallisville, Daniel McManus and his fiancée Janeen Vargas of Wallisville, Rebecca McManus Thornton and husband Bill of Crosby and George McManus of Wallisville; his three nieces and a nephew; and other loving relatives and friends. He will be deeply missed by all who knew him.
Honoring the family and serving as pallbearers will be Jon McManus, Alan Hall, Wade Ballinger, Robbie McManus, Charles McManus and Greg Edwards.
Visitation with the family will be held from 5pm until 7pm on Sunday, December 17, 2016 in the chapel of Sterling Funeral Home, 1201 S. Main Street, Anahuac, Texas. A funeral service will be held at 10am on Monday, December 18, 2016 at Middleton Memorial United Methodist Church in Wallisville, Texas. A graveside service and committal will immediately follow in Worthy cemetery in Liberty, Texas.
Curtis
Yvonnede Kay Curtis, 66, of Liberty, died on Thursday December 15, 2016 at Liberty Dayton Regional Medical Center.
Yvonnede was born Feburary 03, 1950 in Fort Worth, Texas to her parents James Sewell and Lila Tubbee Sewell. She had lived in Liberty since 1990 and was homemaker and had attended First Baptist Church of Daisetta when she was able.
She was preceded in death by her parents, brothers, Lonnie Sewell, Michael Sewell, and Carlos Sewell.
Survivors left to cherish her memory includes her husband of 43 years, Jerry D. Curtis of Liberty. Daughter, Amanda Hawkins of Liberty, brothers, Richard James Sewell and wife Brenda of Amarillo, and Edward Sewell of Oklahoma.
Sisters include Michelle Stickies and husband Tom of Amarillo, Carla Varela and husband Jose of Lubbock. Grandchildren are Cody, Jeremiah, Hannah, and Isabella. She is also survived by many nieces nephews and other family members who loved her and will miss her dearly.
Honorary pallbearers are Oscar Pichardo, Joseph Hawkins, Justin McMillen, Cecile Walker, Derrick Tanner, Randall George and Jimmy Beamer.
A service of remembrance will be held Sunday December 18, 2016 at 2:00 p.m. at Faith & Family Funeral Services Chapel. There will be a gathering of family and friends also on Sunday from 1:00 p.m. till time of service at Faith & Family Funeral Services, Inc.
Franklin
Linda Kaye Franklin, 61, of Katy, formerly of Cleveland, died on Tuesday December 13, 2016 at Houston Methodist West Hospital in Katy.
Linda was born September 08, 1955 in Liberty, to her parents Lewis D. Graham and Tressie L. Bailey Graham. She had lived in Cleveland, for many years before moving to Katy and was a homemaker.
She is preceded in death by her parents.
Survivors left to cherish her memory include her daughter, Tressie Franklin and husband Dyllan of Katy, and her grandchildren Rikki and Samuel, and a host of other relatives and friends who loved her and will miss her very much.

Price
Gladys Mildred Price, 90, a longtime resident of Baytown, Texas died on Thursday, December 15, 2016 at home in Dayton.
Service for Mildred will be 3:00 p.m., Monday, December 19, 2016 at Pace-Stancil Funeral Home Chapel in Dayton. The family will receive friends 1:00 p.m. until service time on Monday.
Mildred was born February 9, 1926 to Waldo Marcus Mason and Virginia Edith Boykin Mason in Quitman, Mississippi. Mildred went to school in a one room school house in the Piney Woods of the Community of Elwood. After leaving school, prior to WWII she worked as a welder at the Mobile, Alabama shipyard until the end of the war. She spent her formative years in Mississippi and her adult life in Texas.
Mildred enjoyed gardening, sewing, making baby blankets, fishing, dancing and trail rides. She loved her family always putting them first and cooking wonderful meals.
She was preceded in death by her parents, sister, Opal Lucas, brother, Marcus Waldo Mason, daughters, JoAnn Williams and Janice Pileski, sons-in-law, Gene Addington and Roy Byrne, daughter-in-law, Kathy Price and great-grandsons, Chase Siebert and John Addington. She is survived by sons, Charlie Ed Price, Jr. and wife Christy, Rodney Wayne Price, Sr.; daughters, Leta Fain Addington, and Kenya Renee Byrne; 15 grandchildren; 25 great-grandchildren; 4 great great-grandchildren and many more to come; also numerous nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.
Clapper
Russel W. Clapper, age 94, of Anahuac, Texas died Saturday, December 10, 2016 at San Jacinto Hospital, Baytown, Texas.
His wife Jeanne of 67 years predeceased him on July 3, 2012. Russel Clapper, known better as Russ, was employed by the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service for 42 years. Russ and Jeanne’s contributions to the community of Anahuac are found in the prolific wildlife of the Anahuac, McFaddin, Texas Point and Moody refuges and the beautiful artwork found in homes and businesses of this area and across the country.
Funeral services will be held at 2:00 p.m. on Saturday, December 17, 2016 in First Baptist Church, Anahuac, Texas. Interment will follow in the Anahuac cemetery. Visitation of family and friends will be at the church on Saturday from 12 noon to 2:00 p.m.
Russ is survived by his sons Rob Clapper and wife Georgia of Anahuac, and Doug Clapper and wife Lena of Aztec, NM; grandchildren Rob R and wife Melissa, Tom and wife Amy, Matt and wife Darleen, Stephanie, and Chris and wife Heather; and great grandchildren: Kade, Gunner, William, Ryann, Jacob, Caitlyn, and Lila and a host of other family and friends.
Russ moved to Anahuac in 1963 to be the first Manager of the Anahuac National Wildlife Refuge where he guided the refuge through its first quarter century. The federal government established the refuge in 1963 with 9, 853 acres of coastal prairie marshland in southern Chambers County on land obtained from the Guy Cade Jackson family. During Russ’ management, land acquisitions including a major one from the Barrow ranch expanded the refuge to 24, 293 acres. When he retired in 1987, Russ was overseeing 79, 711 acres and was Manager of the Anahuac refuge, the McFaddin and Texas Point refuges along the Texas coast near Beaumont, and the Moody National Wildlife Refuge at Smith Point.
Russ’ major emphasis during his management was to preserve the marshlands and wetlands along the upper Texas coast, which are critical to the many species of waterfowl and shorebirds in the nation’s central flyway. The Anahuac National Wildlife Refuge now attracts thousands of visitors each year including bird-watchers, photographers, students, hunters, fishermen and nature lovers of all sorts and has to many put Anahuac on the map.
Russ is preceded in death by his parents, Chelsea and Edith Clapper, brothers and sisters: Donald Clapper, Dorothy Mabry, Mary Jo Clark, and sister-in-law- Marjorie Clapper, his mother-in-law, Frances Monroe Briggs.
Lasyone
Roy Clarence Lasyone, Jr., 69, of Dayton, died Wednesday, 14, 2016, in Dayton.
Funeral services will be held at 10:00 a.m., Monday, December 19, 2016, at the Pace-Stancil Funeral Home with services concluding thereafter. Services are under the direction of Pace-Stancil Funeral Home in Dayton.
Roy was born November 17, 1947 in Pineville, Louisiana, to parents; Roy C., Sr. and Dorothy Grey Lasyone, a former resident of Houston, and has resided in Dayton for the past 20 years. He was a graduate of the Montgomery High School, a veteran of the US Army with service during Vietnam, and a heavy equipment operator for Republic Services for over 44 years. He also enjoyed his grandchildren sports activities, his work, and spending time with family and friends.
Mr. Lasyone was preceded in death by his parents, brother: Dwain “Willie” Lasyone, and niece: Tanisha Roberts. He is survived by his son: Jeremiah Lasyone and wife Katie of Georgetown, daughters: Jessica Lasyone of Illinois, Nicole Prasek and husband Leon of Rosanky, Hope Lasyone of Dayton, Jordan Lasyone of Dayton, and Danielle Lasyone, sister: Darlene Johnson of Louisiana, grandchildren: Hayden and Kamryn Lasyone, Bradyn, Ethan, and Colton Prasek, numerous other relatives, and friends.
Cooper
Lynton “Bobo” Sparkman Cooper Jr. age 58 of Liberty, Texas died Sunday December 11, 2016 at his home.
Lynton was born March 28, 1958 in Mansfield, Ohio the son of the late Rev. Lynton Sparkman Cooper Sr. and Rev. Thelma Blair Cooper. Lynton worked for years doing remodeling and forms of construction with his brother. He also worked for Dragon as a sandblaster and painter and Syntex Agriculture Business as a Chemical Engineer. He will be remembered for his love of family especially his nieces and nephews. He was a kind, gentle, and patient man, who never got upset. He took great care of his parents as they aged, he would drive them all over the country so that they could continue to minister and spread the good word throughout numerous churches for the Church of God. Lynton served in the US Navy from 1979 to 1981 where he served aboard the USS Plunger.
He was preceded in death by his parents as well as a sister Katherine Majors.
He leaves behind to cherish his memory his siblings: Thomas Cooper and wife Irene; Walter Cooper and wife Elizabeth; Joseph Cooper; Evelyn Dean and husband Steve; and Kevin Cooper. In addition he leaves a host of beloved nieces and nephews.
A graveside service will be held at noon Friday December 16, 2016 at Palms Memorial Park, Dayton, Texas.
Petters
Evelyn Annie Kovalcik Petters, 83, of Eastgate, died Wednesday, December 14, 2016, in Conroe.
Visitation will be held from 5 p.m. to 8 p.m., with rosary services at 7 p.m., Monday, at the Pace-Stancil Funeral Home Chapel. Mass of Christian burial will be held at 10:00 a.m., Tuesday, December 20, 2016, at the St. Anne’s Mission Catholic Church in Eastgate. Services are under the direction of Pace-Stancil Funeral Home in Dayton.
Evelyn was born December 19, 1932 in Eastgate, to parents; Adolph Kovalcik and Stephie Dlouhy, a former resident of Crosby, and has resided in Eastgate for the past 42 years. She was a member of St. Anne Mission Catholic Church. She also enjoyed puzzles, fishing, gardening, quilting, shopping, and making kolaches.
Mrs. Petters was preceded in death by her husband: Jimmy G. Petters, grandson: Devin Anderson, father: Adolph Kovalcik, and mother: Stephie Dlouhy Skarpa. She is survived by her sons: Vincent Petters and wife Donna of Eastgate and Jeffrey Petters and wife Deleta of Crosby, daughter: Katrina McNeely and husband David of Kingwood, brother: Felix Skarpa and wife Marie of Dayton, sisters: Stephie Kolek and husband Charles of Eastgate, Albina Ubnoskye of Eastgate, Annie Mae Marek and husband Frank of Spring, Martha Pollock and husband Edward of Eastgate, and Doris Stark of Eastgate, grandchildren: Paul Petters and fiancé Taylor Webb, Sarah Petters, Brice Petters, Savannah Petters, and Eric McNeely, numerous nieces, nephews, other relatives, and friends.
Gilbert
James Clayton “Curly” Gilbert, 85, was born on May 18th, 1931 in Baytown, Texas to Martin and Ruby Bell Gilbert.
He went to meet The Master Carpenter on Sunday, December 11th, 206 with his family by his side.
James (Pawpaw) was best known for his love of fishing, his amazing carpentry work, his lack of words and the amount of love he had for all his grands and greats. He was everyone’s Pawpaw James.
James served in the United States Army for 15 years. He fought in the Vietnam and Korean Wars before he was honorably discharged, working up from being a cook to becoming a Sergeant.
James was preceded in death by his anchor in life, Edna Hisler; daughter-in-law Mary Gilbert; son Kenneth “Puppy” Lawson Gilbert; brother John Norman Gilbert; sister Luther Faye; and his parents Martin and Ruby Bell Gilbert.
He leaves behind to cherish his memory his daughters Margaret Timbs and husband Dan, Nadja Woody and husband Jay; Patricia Hisler and Yvette Hisler; his sons John Gilbert, Robby Hisler and wife Linda, Bill Hisler and wife Anita and Randy Hisler; as well as COUNTLESS grandbabies and great-grandbabies. James is also survived by his brother Kenneth M. Gilbert and wife Sue; his sister Sylvia Owens; and many other loving family members and friends. He will be greatly missed by all who knew him.

Funeral services will begin at 11am at Sterling Funeral Home. A graveside service and committal will follow at 2pm in White Oak cemetery in New Caney, Texas.

Jordan
Charles Benjamin Jordan, 78, of Liberty, Texas, died Friday, December 9, 2016 at his home in Liberty.
He was born on May 6, 1938 in Peace Dale, Rhode Island to William and Mary Banning Jordan. Charles joined the United States Army and proudly served his country. He worked as a Biomedical Technician for the Michael E. DeBakey Veterans Affair Medical Center in Houston. Charles retired from the VA hospital in 2002 after 23 years of employment.
Charles had several hobbies, some of which included fishing, gambling on the slot machines and playing music on his guitar or keyboards. He also liked to throw out quotes in general conversations.
Charles was preceded in death by his parents; his brothers Norman and Jim Jordan; his sisters Helen Powell, Patricia Walker, Betty Corley and Linda Fagan; and his stepson Dennis Johnson. He leaves behind to cherish his memory, loving wife of 48 years, Inez Ebarb Jordan; his children Charlie Jordan and wife Stephanie of Carrollton, TX and Lori Taylor and husband Donny of Raywood; his stepdaughters Pamela Bradley of Deer Park and Bonnie Conway and husband Pete of Kennesaw, Georgia; his 9 grandchildren and his 4 great-grandchildren; and numerous other loving relatives and friends. Charles will be deeply missed by all who knew him.
