William C. Charlton
William Conde Charlton was a gifted Texas trial attorney and corporate counsel for almost half a century. In the middle of his life, he left a small town practice that he had joined out of college and, relocating his family, began a new career as legal counsel for a US multinational corporation. A Houstonian for twenty-seven years, he retired in 1994. William was born the eldest son of Dallas lawyer Sidney Allan Charlton and Mildred Katharine Volk, both from Dallas families. He was educated in the city's schools and became an avid sportsmen, winning distinction in tennis, and track and field. He tried his hand at business and attended UT Austin until volunteering to fight in WWII. Just nineteen, he served as a navigator in the air war in southern Italy, guiding B-24s on bombing missions out and back over northern Italy, Hungary, Austria and Germany. In later years, he talked little of these grim missions--dealing with "the shakes" was important, he would say--but spoke volubly of Italy, his friends and gambling. He loved poker. With the war over he returned to Texas, and SMU law school where he met and married
Barbara Bushnell. Once admitted to the bar, he chose to make his way independent of his father and grandfather, both eminent Dallas attorneys, and joined a small firm in Abilene. Here those who directed utilities, railroads and oil industries sought his counsel and common sense: his firm flourished for almost two decades. But as the oil business slumped in the 1960s, he left Abilene and trial law to become an attorney for Cabot Corporation of Boston, at its operations in Texas, West Virginia and Illinois. He ended his career as its senior attorney here in Houston. A loving father and husband, he helped with the Boy Scouts and coached Little League baseball. But golf and tennis were his great loves after dancing and the songs of Nat King Cole to which he had courted his wife. Barbara's illness and death in 2002 darkened the later years of his life. But he was to fall in love again. He met the retired realtor, Julia Taylor, another alumni of Dallas High, at the Seekers Sunday school class at St. Martin's Episcopal Church. They married
December 31, 2006. He died quietly amongst family on Thursday morning. He is survived by his wife, Julia, his brother, George, three children--Allen and Michael Charlton and Sallie Ross--and five grandchildren--William and Adele Charlton, and Susannah, Mary, and Samuel Ross. A remembrance service will be held at St. Martins Episcopal Church, 717 Sage Road, Houston on 19 December at 2pm with a reception to follow. The funeral is set provisionally for Saturday 5 January 2008, at Grove Hill Memorial Park cemetery, Dallas, Texas. Contact Grove Hill at tel. 214-388-8887 for details.
