VIRGINIA MCCRAY MURPHY devoted wife, mother, grandmother, sister, and friend died peacefully at home on July 23, 2009. Ralph, her loving husband of 57 years, preceded her in death in March 2008. Ginger leaves a legacy of strength and determination both of which were vividly displayed as she faced her most recent challenges. She is survived by her daughters Kay Goodrich and husband Tommy, and Karen Jensen and husband Greg; grandchildren Katy and Matthew Goodrich and Elizabeth and Parker Jensen; her sister Jane Freitag and husband Forrest and their family. Ginger was born on January 21, 1929 in Beaumont, Texas, to Jo and George McCray and lived all of her adult life in Houston where she devoted herself to her family, her friends, and her community. She was a member of Chapelwood United Methodist Church, The Blue Bird Circle, Lakeside Country Club, and The Daughters of the American Revolution. She and Ralph were additionally blessed by many special friends with whom they shared years of wonderful adventures and happy memories. The family appreciates the special care shown by the entire staff of Odyssey Healthcare and especially the skillful dedication and loving support of Sheryl Turner, Mildred Hill, Jerlean Black, and Brenda Washington. Graveside services will be held at 1:30 p.m. on Tuesday, July 28, at Forest Park Westheimer with a service to celebrate her life following at 3:00 p.m. in the chapel of Chapelwood United Methodist Church. Rev. Mopsy Andrews will officiate. A reception will be held immediately after. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to the Ralph B. Jesse Barnhardt, Jr., born on February 22, 1920 in Honey Grove, TX, passed away in Simi Valley, California on July 17, 2009. Interment was held at Houston National cemetery, and Jesse will be missed by his buddies of the military.

Virginia Paty Ellison
Death came to VIRGINIA PATY ELLISON July 16, 2009. She is survived by her son and his wife, Keith and Kathleen Ellison of Houston, and her daughter, Jeannie, and grandson, Blake, of Salt Lake City. Her husband of 59 years, Jack K. Ellison, preceded her in death on November 19, 2007. The Ellisons moved to Austin in 1987 after Mr. Ellison's retirement, having resided earlier in New Orleans, Denver, and the San Francisco area. Mrs. Ellison was born in Paris Tx. in 1920, the daughter of W.B. and Jean Jackson Paty. She graduated from Paris Junior College and received a bachelor's degree from North Texas State University, where she subsequently taught journalism and served as publicity director before attending the Columbia University Graduate School of Journalism. In 1945, she received a master of science degree from Columbia and was awarded a Pulitzer Traveling Fellowship. She joined the news staff of the Baltimore Evening Sun and served in the Sunpapers' London Bureau. Following her marriage in 1948, she was a reporter for the New Orleans Times-Picayune and later served as a journalism instructor at Tulane University. During her active years, her interests in Austin included volunteering at the LBJ Presidential Library and membership in AAUW, the English-Speaking Union, Austin Newcomers, and the Austin Woman's Club, as well as book-discussion groups and swim club at Crenshaw's. She was a member of Covenant Presbyterian Church. She moved to Houston in March of 2008 following the death of her husband and resided there with her son and his wife. The family is planning a memorial service at a later date. "Which can say more Than this rich praise That you alone are you."

Diane Lamerne Laverty Dicks
DIANE LAMERNE LAVERTY DICKS passed away July 13, 2009 with her family at her side, after an extended illness. She was born April 29, 1946 in Houston. She earned B.A. degree in 1968 from Houston Baptist University in Piano Performance and a Masters in Biochemistry from the University of Houston in 1971. Upon graduation, she joined the lab of Dr. Arthur Beaudet at Baylor College of Medicine as a researcher, where she worked for over 37 years, rising to the position of Lab Manager. Per Dr. Beaudet, she was an enormous contributor to the growth and accomplishments of medical genetics at Baylor College of Medicine and he relied on her help and advice on every aspect of running the lab. She helped to train over 70 postdoctoral physicians and scientists and numerous graduate students during her time at Baylor. She was counted on daily for her knowledge and advice by members of the lab and by faculty members. She was a contributor to many research discoveries in genetics and was acknowledged for her assistance in many medical publications throughout the years. Diane is preceded in death by her mother Hazel Dickinson Laverty. Diane is survived by her husband of 33 years Richard Burton Dicks; son William Burton Dicks and wife Jill; daughter Anne Louise Dicks Heyden and husband Thomas; grandchildren Coralee Diane Dicks and Madison Elizabeth Dicks; brother Paul Hazen Laverty; sister Dona Laverty Nussbaum; and father Harold Hazen Laverty; as well as numerous nieces, nephews, and friends. Diane was an active member of the United Daughters of the Confederacy, the Daughters of the American Revolution and the Texas Triumph Register and was a life-long member and Bible teacher at ChristChurch Presbyterian, where services will be held Friday afternoon, July 17, 2009 at 2:00 p.m. In lieu of flowers, donations can be sent to the Mo-Ranch Presbyterian Conference Center Greenhouse Fund in Hunt, Texas.

IRENE FAULK RODEN Nov. 23, 1919 - July 8, 2009 An earthly angel has joined her heavenly Father. She was preceded in death by her mother Alice Lea Harper Faulk, her father James Monroe Faulk, her sisters Catherine Faulk Gay, Lucy Faulk Berkman and her brother James Monroe Faulk, Jr. She is survived by her loving husband of 69 years, Sam Roden, and her children: Betsy Roden Scheffe and her husband, Steve Scheffe; Tommy Roden; Cathy Roden Houston and grandchildren: Michael and Trish Scheffe; Aden and Amy Lasseter; Brian and Lucy Scheffe; Andrew Roden and Laura and Miles Roden; Sam Houston and great grandchildren: Will and Lee Scheffe; Haley, Luke, Harper and Henley Lasseter; Jack and Ellie Roden. She was born in Austin, Texas on November 24, 1919. She grew up in Austin, graduated from Austin High School and attended the University of Texas. It was at UT where she met and married
her Chemistry tutor, Sam Roden. Irene and Sam settled in Houston where they reared their three children. She was very active with her church, St. Andrews Presbyterian, where she served as Director of Children's Ministries among many other activities, and in her later years, with Hospitality Apartments serving families of cancer patients. Irene loved to laugh. She spent her life unselfishly tending to the needs of others. Irene intensely loved her vast network of friends and family with whom she stayed in continuous communication. Memorial Service will be held at St. Andrew's Presbyterian Church, Saturday, July 11, 2:00 p.m., 5308 Buffalo Speedway, Houston, Texas. Brett Anthony Harper, born on April 12, 1970 in St. Paul, Minnesota, passed away on Monday, July 6, 2009 in Houston at the age of 39. He leaves behind two young daughters, and his family who is heartbroken at their loss.

BOBBY GENE ASKEW was called home to eternal rest on July 5th, 2009 at age 79 after years of fighting cancer. He is survived by his loving wife of fifty one years, Ann, his sons, John Britton of Atlanta, GA and Robert Lee of Houston, TX, his daughter, Elizabeth Carter of Houston, TX, and his sisters, Helen A Smitley and Virginia A Young of Shenandoah, TX. He is preceded in death by his parents, his two brothers, J.B. and Morris Edward of Dekalb, TX, and his sister, Billie Bond of Houston, TX. Bobby was born on August 25, 1929 in McCamey, TX to Joseph Britton and LeElla Askew Wright. He grew up in San Benito, TX and attended San Benito High School. Bobby joined the Marine Corps, and later attended Texas Southmost College in Brownsville, TX, where he was a cheerleader and elected most popular student. He went on to The University of Texas at Austin where he met his wife-to-be. He graduated with a Bachelor of Arts and was recalled into the United States Air Force as a Second Lieutenant. Bobby's career took him and his family to many places. He lived and worked in Houston, TX, Wichita, KS, Atlanta, GA, and Dallas, TX, among other cities. He retired from the Honeywell Corporation, as a Senior Contract Analyst / Regional Business Manager in Dallas, Texas. In 2005, he and his wife moved to the Holly Hall Retirement Community in Houston. Funeral services will be held at Palmer Memorial Episcopal Church at 6221 Main Street in Houston, TX on Thursday, July 9th at 10am. The Rev John W. Price will officiate. RUSSELL W. VAUGHN went to be with our Lord and Savior on July 4, 2009. He was born in Providence, RI on September 22, 1928 to Ethel and Earl Vaughn. Russell is preceded in death by his son, Mark; brother, David; and sisters, Doris Smith and Norma Woodson. He is survived by his wife of 53 years, Nancy Vaughn; daughter, Leslie and husband Jim Beam, grandchildren, Brandon, Reagan, and Caden; brother, Robert; and sister, Muriel Robley. A 27 year member of Westbury Baptist Church where he served as a deacon, Russ also loved to travel with his family and spent many summers in Maine. A Celebration of Russ's life will be held Tuesday, July 7, 2009, 2:00 pm, at Westbury Baptist Church, 10426 Hillcroft, Houston, TX 77096. GREG JUNGEBLUT left peacefully for Heaven on July 3, 2009. He was at home, surrounded by his wife and three sons after an inspirational 29 month battle with brain cancer. Greg was born on Nov. 2, 1950 in New Orleans. Left to cherish his memory are Laura, his wife and best friend of 36 years, his sons Adam (and his wife Robyn), Neal, Grant and the littlest joys of his life, his grandchildren William, Avery and due in Oct., Lilly. He is also survived by his parents, Jules and Evelyn Jungeblut and siblings David (Betty), Judy Frentz (Dennis) and Diane Luminais (Tommy). Also mourning his loss are his mother-in-law Alice Sanders and brother-in-law Pat Sanders (Brenda) as well as numerous nieces and nephews. Greg's happiest moments were spent with his family. He also devoted countless hours to St. John Vianney, Boy Scouts of America, Strake Jesuit, and most recently MDAnderson as a volunteer. The family would like to thank the heroes at MD Anderson especially Drs. Vinay Puduvalli and Jeff Weinberg, as well as Debbie and Angie for their devotion to Greg. To celebrate Greg's life there will be a Memorial Mass at 2PM on Friday, July 17 at St. John Vianney, 625 Nottingham Oaks Trail, Houston 77079. A reception will follow. Alice Constance Carlson Axelson, 100, born in Brooklyn, NY on January 18, 1911, went Home to be with the Lord on April 4, 2011. She was a loving and supportive wife, mo the r, grandmo the r, and great-grandmother. She was predeceased by her beloved husband of over 70 years, The Rev. Lawrence R. Axelson, and by her sisters E the l Johnson and Lillian Bent. She is survived by her children, Kenneth and Erma Axelson of Houston, Janet and Dale Imig of Houston, and Roland and Anita Riggio Axelson of We the rsfield, Connecticut . She is also survived by sisters-in-law Helen Axelson of Houston and Avis Axelson of Santa Rosa, California . She has six grandchildren: Anne Hochfelder (Adam) [Flower Mound, TX); David Axelson (Laura) [Atlanta, GA]; Daniel Imig (Julia)[Alexandria, VA]; Steven Imig [Austin, TX]; Cloe Axelson Hanson (Sam) [Boston, MA]; Lucas Axelson (engaged to Elizabeth Brogan) [Boston, MA]. She is also survived by six great-grandchildren: Jacob and Sarah Hochfelder; Emma, Mary, Margaret and Rachel Axelson. Two nieces and a nephew also survive, as well as a number of other members of her extended family. She was a graduate of Maxwell Teacher Training College in Brooklyn, New York . As a pastor's wife, she was the number one supporter of her beloved husband as she joined him in ministry. She spent a life time reaching out and supporting others. She loved visiting shut-ins and those in need. She was a letter and note writer well into her nineties, and must have written thousands of letters, notes and cards. She possessed the gift of hospitality, entertaining countless groups for meals in the ir home, as well as preparing food for others in their time of need. Through the years, she taught innumerable classes, both for adults and for children. A Memorial Service will be held on Friday, April 8, 2011 at 2:00 p.m. in the Chapel at Clarewood House Retirement Community, 7400 Clarewood Drive, Houston, TX 77036, with the Rev. Thomas Hill, Chaplain, officiating. JAMES BERNARD BYRNE, 65, passed away on July 2nd, 2009 at Memorial Herman Hospital in Houston, TX after complications due to a severe illness. Born and raised in the Bronx, NY, he moved to Houston, TX in 1978. Recently retired after 39 years in the Oil and Gas industry as an Electrical Engineer, he received his degrees from Belmont Abbey College and North Carolina State at Raleigh, NC as well as a Masters in Electrical Engineering from the Univ. of New Hampshire. Beloved husband of 32 years he is survived by his wife Nancy Moran Byrne, daughters Jennifer and Colleen, and sons Bryan and James. Other survivors include his brother, Rev. John Francis Byrne and cherished sister Helen Marie Byrne Dooley as well as many relatives and friends. Born Feb. 11, 1974, in Dallas, Brian was the youngest of three children. He grew up in Mansfield and graduated from Stephen F. Austin State University with a B.A. degree.
He was preceded in death by his biological father, Pete Torres.
Survivors: His mother and father, B.J. and Mary Ann Littleton; his partner, David Pierce; his siblings, Joni and Mark; many aunts, uncles, nieces, nephews and other relatives; and numerous friends who loved him dearly.
