KARL GAUTSCHI
KARL GAUTSCHI, born in 1920, died peacefully in his sleep Saturday morning, June 28, 2008. "Mr. Carl" as he was called, was a true pioneer in the Houston fashion scene and he was largely responsible for bringing European hairstyles to Houston. Houstonians will remember Mr. Carl as the man who created beauty in the 60's, 70's and into the 80's, first as the owner of Carl Coiffure and, later, at the Beauty Pavilion. Karl Gautschi's story is part of the history of Houston's expansion. Born in Switzerland, he grew-up when war was exploding on both sides. As a young man in the Swiss Army, he patrolled the border, during World War II. where he could see bombs falling in the distance. He enrolled in beauty school in Switzerland and then moved to France to work in an upscale beauty salon at the height of Paris' Fashion explosion. It wasn't long before he became a favorite with the Paris fashionables and international visitors, as well. In fact, prominent Houstonians so enjoyed their visits with Mr. Carl that they eventually convinced him to bring his talents to Houston. The Beauty Pavilion, which opened in 1963, was considered Houston's finest, most exclusive salon for many years. Interestingly, Mr. Carl opened his business on the corner of Westheimer and Loop 610 at a time when the land, where the The Galleria is now located, was merely a cow pasture surrounded by barbed wire fences. Mr. Gautschi is survived by his wife, Lotty, as well as his sister and nephews. The Gautschi's are grateful for the kind support they have received throughout the years from our friends, loyal employees and fellow Houstonians. The family has chosen to mourn his occasion in private. Friends wishing to make a donation can contribute to: Yahweh Children's Foundation, 5442 Teague, Houston, TX 77041 or a charity of their choice.
