Esteban Cavazos

Esteban Cavazos passed into eternal rest Saturday, Nov. 15, 2003, at the age of 88. He was a loving and devoted father, grandfather, great-grandfather and friend who will be greatly missed.

Mr. Cavazos was a hard working family man who believed in his family and did not believe in being a stranger, always helping those in need; no matter if it was a neighbor or someone he just met.
He was reared on the Pierce Estate and lived in Wharton for a number of years. Mr. Cavazos worked for Texas Gulf Sulphur for 46 years.

His beloved wife of 64 years, Celia G. Cavazos; children, Alice Montalvo, Minnie Rodriguez and Stephen Cavazos Jr. preceded him in death.

Survivors include daughters and sons-in-law, Sister Celia Ann Cavazos MCDP, Alma C. and Joseph C. Diaz, Mary and Luis Madrid, Celia and Mark Weiss and Annie and Eleazar Morales; sister, Josefa Marquez; grandchildren, Domingo, Margaret, Elizabeth, Joseph Anthony, Virginia, Christopher, Steven Anthony, Rudy, Brian, Kathrin, Mark and Jason; and 10 great-grandchildren.

Visitation was held in Alamo Funeral Chapels at 4 p.m. Sunday, Nov. 16, followed by a rosary at 5:30 p.m. A funeral mass was celebrated at 5:30 p.m. Monday, Nov. 17, at San Fernando Cathedral Monday. Burial followed at Mission Burial Park North.

Eula Ganske

Funeral services for Eula Grace Howell Ganske, 73, of Sugar Land, and a longtime resident of Wharton County, will be held at 10 a.m. Monday at First Baptist Church. Burial will follow in Greenlawn Memorial Park Cemetery in Rosenberg. Visitation will be from 6-9 p.m. Sunday at Wharton Funeral Home.

Mrs. Ganske died Nov. 20, 2003. at her residence following an extended illness.

Ervin Muegge

Ervin Charles Muegge, loving husband, father and PaPa, born April 15, 1928, in Kennedy, went home to his heavenly father on Tuesday, Nov. 18, 2003, surrounded by his loving family in Glen Flora.

After graduating from high school in MacGregor, Mr. Muegge attended Texas A&M University on a football scholarship for 18 months. In 1948 he joined Johnnie Frankie’s bunch at Wharton County Junior College, where he became a Junior College All-American football player. While there, he met and married Betty Parr Irvin. Mr. Muegge then accepted a football scholarship to the University of Houston, graduating in 1951. He remained a loyal and enthusiastic supporter of the Houston Cougars until his death. Upon graduating from the University of Houston, he accepted a farm management position from the Bank of the Southwest, managing the G.C.P. Gifford properties in Wharton County.

In addition to serving on many boards and committees, Mr. Muegge also supported numerous civic projects in Wharton and Wharton County. In 1976, he joined his son Eric at C.E. Muegge Real Estate in the farm and ranch brokerage business, remaining an active associate until his death.

Mr. Muegge was preceded in death by his parents, Louis and Doris Muegge; mother-in-law and-father-in-law, Nellie and I.J. Irvin; his brothers-in-law, I.J. Irvin Jr. and Melvin Jacobs; and sister-in-law, Ellen Hood Eldridge.

Survivors include his loving wife of 54 years, Betty Parr; son and daughter-in-law, Eric and Cheri Muegge of Wharton; daughter, Karen Rees of Garwood; grandchildren, Lyle, Mason, and Layne Muegge of College Station and Houston; Dyana and Bryan Rees of Huntsville and Garwood; brothers and sisters-in-law, Lonnie and Elsie Muegge of McGregor, Eldon and Dorothy Muegge and sister, Lorene Jacobs, all of Gatesville.

Funeral services were held at St. Paul’s Lutheran Church in Wharton on Thursday, Nov. 20, at 4 p.m. with Rev. Paul Kersten officiating. Internment followed at Evergreen Memorial Park Cemetery in Wharton.

Pallbearers were Clarence Cerny, Harold Bickley, John Wynn, Harold Graf, John Connor, Curtis Wilkins, Bill Kincer, Walter Jones, Bill Morrow, Bryan Rees, Lyle Muegge, Mason Muegge and Layne Muegge.

Honorary pallbearers were Joe Rhodes, Tim Barker, Bill Yeoman, Michael Crabb, Johnny Laitkep, Dr. Gregg Dimmick, members of the Glen Flora Volunteer Fire Department, the WCJC “Frankie Boys,” members of the University of Houston Varsity H Association and all of his many friends.

If desiring, memorials may be made to the Johnnie Frankie/Tom Pickett Scholarship Fund, c/o Wharton County Junior College, 911 E. Boling Hwy., Wharton, TX 77488 or to St. Paul’s Lutheran Church, 325 N. East Avenue, Wharton, TX 77488.

Michael Perkins

Funeral services for Michael Ray Perkins, 21, of El Campo, will be held at 11 a.m. Tuesday at Bible Truth Apostolic Church with Rev. T. Perkins Jr. officiating. Burial will follow in Paradise Cemetery in Pin Oak community.

Mr. Perkins died Nov. 18, 2003, in Gonzales. He was born Nov. 16, 1982, in El Campo to Rev. Thelton and Jane Mishall Perkins Jr.
He worked as a truck driver.

Survivors inlcude parents, Rev. Thelton and Jane Perkins; son, Patrick Michael Perkins; sisters and brother-in-law, La Keisha and Marcus Jackson of Gardena, Calif., Elisabeth and Constance Perkins, both of El Campo.

Fred Beener

Memorial services for Fred Charles Beener, 66, of Bremerton, Wash., were held at Lewis Funeral Chapel in Bremerton, Wash.

Mr. died Dec. 20, 2003, at Harrison Hospital in Bremerton, Wash., after a heart attack. He was born Jan. 18, 1937, in Des Moines, Iowa, to Fred and Lillian Price Beener.

On July 17, 1967, he married Jo Ann Pearce Bruhn in Des Moines, Iowa. Mr. Beener served in the U.S. Army as a supply clerk for three years. He achieved the rank of private first class and was awarded the National Defense Service Medal. Mr. Beener worked for many years with Safeway stores in Iowa and Texas. After his retirement from Safeway he was employed by Evans Oil Company in Texas. In June 1997, Mr. Beener underwent a heart transplant and moved to Washington state.

Survivors include his wife, Jo Ann Beener of Bremerton, Wash.; children, Karen King of Wharton, Rebecca and Ashley Beener, both of Bremerton, Wash., Robin Neal of Lodi, Calif., Tracy Macias and Joseph Beener, both of El Campo, Dana Massie and Kevin Beener, both of Indianola, Iowa, Eric Beener of La Mesa, Calif., Michael Beener of Des Moines, Iowa, and Dennis Beener of Kent, Wash; father, Fred Beener, now of Bremerton, Wash.; brother, David Beener of Des Moines, Iowa; 25 grandchildren and 4 great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his mother; a grandson, Kevin Bruce Beener; and a granddaughter, Kim Bradford.

The family requests that his memory be honored by remembering his favorite slogan — “Save a life; be an organ donor.”

Lydia Hundl

Funeral services for Lydia Hundl, 85, of Wharton, are pending at Wharton Funeral Home.
Mrs. Hundl died Dec. 30, 2003, in a Wharton hospital after a brief illness.

Vilas Muirhead

Funeral services for Vias Muirhead, 71, of Needville, were held Sunday. Burial followed in Hansen Park Cemetery.

Mr. Muirhead died Dec. 26, 2003, at Gulf Coast Medical Center. He was born Nov. 9, 1932, in Oilton, Okla., to Vilas Franklin and Nellie McNichols Muirhead.

He had been a resident of Needville for five years. Mr. Muirhead worked as a laborer and was Baptist by faith. He was a veteran of World War II and a member of the VFW.

Survivors include daughters, Jo Marie Rameriz and Dianne Johnson; sons, Larry Muirhead, Barry Muirhead and Ronnie Muirhead; 16 grandchildren and 17 great-grandchildren.

Charles Stanley

Charles Estelle “Charlie” Stanley was born on July 4, 1917, in Oakland, Okla., to Chas and Gustavia Pratt Shaw. She passed away on Sunday, Dec. 28, 2003 in a Houston hospital at the age of 86 years.

She is survived by her children, Sue C. Hill, James and Marti Jo Stanley and Katy and Chris Davison; grandchildren, Kris Stow, Tiffany Horton, Dee Hill, Sukie Turner, Mike Stanley and Jon Stanley; great-grandchildren, Cameron Stow, Dillon Smith, Cortnee Stow and Skyler Turner; step-grandchildren, Cody Davison and Jaron Davison; special friend, Betty Houston; as well as other loving family members and friends.

A graveside service will be held at 2 p.m. Friday at the Fulshear Cemetery in Fulshear.

Adolph Vecera

Funeral services for Adolph Vit Vecera, 83, of Eagle Lake, will be held at 2 p.m. Friday at Nativity’s Our Lady of Perpetual Help Sanctuary with Rev. Eddie Winkler officiating. Burial will follow in Lakeside Cemetery in Eagle Lake with military honors. A vigil service will be held at 7 p.m. Thursday at Dulany Funeral Home in Eagle Lake.

Mr. Vecera died Dec. 28, 2003, at River Oaks Health Care Center in Columbus following an extended illness. He was born June 15, 1920, in East Bernard to Klement and Anna Marik Vecera.

He had been a resident of Eagle Lake almost 50 years. Mr. Vecera had a career in carpentry and played drums and performed with bands in the area. He was a Seaman First Class in the U.S. Navy during World War II. Mr. Vecera served aboard the USS Columbia (CL-56) in the Pacific eight months at sea and was awarded the American Campaign Medal, Asiatic-Pacific Campaign Medal and World War II Victory Medal. He married Isabel Augusta Finney in Columbus on July 28, 1951.

Survivors include wife, Isabel Augusta Vecera of Eagle Lake; daughter, Mary Ethel Gertson of Eagle Lake; sisters and brothers-in-law, Beatrice and Edwin Stelzel, Lillian Talafuse of Flatonia, Edith and Bill Zapalac of Sealy, Maryann and Keith Light of Pine Bluff, Ark., Judy and Ben Rosentreter of Yoakum and brother, Victor Vecera of Flatonia; one granddaughter and four great-grandchildren.

In lieu of flowers the family requests memorials be to the Parish of the Nativity Building Fund, P.O. Box 307, Eagle Lake, TX 77434.

Alice Baylor

Funeral services for Alice Mae Baylor, 54, of El Campo will he held at 11 a.m. Saturday at St. James Baptist Church. with Rev. D. Johnson officiating. Burial will follow in Rowden Cemetery. Visitation will be from 6 to 9 p.m. Friday. Friends may call after 1 p.m. Friday.

Mrs. Baylor died May 31, 2004, at Gulf Coast Medical Center. She was born Jan. 19, 1950, in Pierce to Robert Louis and Marie Henderson Thompson Sr.

Survivors include her husband Jerry L. Baylor of El Campo; mother, Marie Henderson Thompson of El Campo; daughters and sons-in-law, Sandra and Elton Simmons of Houston. Eileen and Eli Griffin of El Campo, Lavern and Michael Gooden of Houston, Desiree Baylor of El Campo, Erica Baylor of Houston and Kei’ Anna Wilkerson of El Campo; sons and daughters-in-law, Joshua Baylor of Houston, Ervin Wilkerson, Frankie and Jennifer Wilkerson and Erie Baylor, all of El Campo; brothers, Robert Louis Thompson Jr. and Thomas A. Thompson, both of Houston, and Ivory Thompson of Kansas City, Mo.; sisters, Edna Coleman, Ruth Bluntson, Eloise Thompson and Zula Thompson, all of El Campo; 18 grandchildren and one great-grandchild.

Betty Dernehl

Funeral services for Betty Jo Dernehl, 73, of Orchard, will be held at 10 a.m. today, Wednesday, at Guardian Angel Catholic Church in Wallis with Rev. Johnsten officiating. Burial will follow in Guardian Angel Cemetery in Wallis.

Mrs. Dernehl died Aug. 1, 2004, in Wallis. She was born in Orchard to Joseph and Josie Krenek Farkas.

Reared in Orchard, she graduated from Orchard High School. Mrs. Dernehl married Wilbert Dernehl on Feb. 2, 1947, at Guardian Angel Church and he preceded her in death. She and her husband owned and operated their own construction business and raised cattle. Mrs. Dernehl was a member of Guardian Angel Catholic Church and served on its Cemetery Board and was a member of Catholic Daughters, Altar Society and American Legion Auxiliary.

Survivors include son Wilbert Dernehl Jr. of Orchard; daughter and son-in-law, Bonnie and Daniel Orsak of Orchard; three grandchildren and three great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her parents; husband; and sisters, Margaret King and Irene Boldt.

Arrangements were under the direction of Knesek Family Funeral Chapels in Wallis.

Robert Koym

Funeral services from Robert “Bob” Koym, 87, of Orchard, will be held at 10 a.m. Friday at Orchard Methodist Church with Rev. Cheryl Smith and Dr. Tom Bain officiating.

Mr. Koym died Aug. 3, 2004, in Richmond. He was born in East Bernard to the late Robert Paul Koym and Tonie Klein Koym.

He was reared in the East Bernard area and graduated from East Bernard High School. Mr. Koym worked at Duvall Sulphur as a heavy equipment operator. He married Evelyn Hensch on March 8, 1941, in East Bernard.

Survivors include his wife of 63 years, Evelyn Koym; daughters and sons-in-law, Bev and Vernon Ekarius, Sherry Mersmann, Debby and Jim Oliver and Lori Koym; six grandchildren and two great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents and sister, Ora Lange.

Funeral services are under the direction of Knesek and Sons Funeral Home in Wallis.
