Wilbur Breedlove

Wilbur Fate Breedlove Sr. was born on Aug. 8, 1934 in Vinson, Okla., to parents Marion Frank and Annie Jane Manney Breedlove. He died Wednesday, April 26, 2006, at his favorite place, his farm, in Beeville.
He was reared in the Arnett, Okla., area and graduated from Arnett High School in 1953. While in high school, he enjoyed playing basketball and was the catcher for the baseball team when he received an offer to play for the St. Louis Cardinals in 1954. Mr. Breedlove decided to pursue a degree from college instead, attending Wayland Baptist College in Texas, and then went to Clarendon, where he also played basketball and was a pitcher on a semi-pro team in the Cap Rock League. It was in Clarendon that he met Virginia Wallek, they were married on June 29, 1956, in Beeville. Mr. Breedlove served his country in the United States Army in 1957. From 1958 to 1965 they lived in Corpus Christi, where he boxed in the Golden Gloves from 1958 to 1960. Fate Jr. was born in 1959, while Fate was attending the University of Corpus Christi. After graduating from Corpus Christi with a B.S. degree in 1961, he taught high school history and math in Mathis from 1961 to 1964. In 1963, he bought a “Learn to Fly” book and taught himself how to fly. Mr. Breedlove obtained his private pilots license and purchased a Cessna 140 drag tail airplane which he restored. For two years, 1964 and 1965, he worked for Texaco in the Corpus area. In 1965, the family moved to Bellaire and Mr. Breedlove started to work for Ford Motor Company as a zone manager. In 1971 they moved to Sharpstown and finally to Wharton in 1978. In 1980, he designed, built and operated the Breedlove Steakhouse in Wharton. After obtaining his cattle herd in 1992, he and Virginia made numerous trips to Beeville. August of 2002 was a happy time, due to his retirement and opportunity to watch his grandchildren play sports and to take time to hunt in Colorado.

Local funeral services will be held 5 p.m. Monday, May 1, 2006, from the First Baptist Church in East Bernard with Reverend Duane Mayberry officiating. Friends may call at the Wharton Funeral Home from 6 to 9 p.m. Sunday, April 30. Out of town funeral services will be held 5 p.m. Tuesday, May 2, 2006, at the Methodist Church in Skidmore, with reverends Duane Mayberry and Jason Calvert officiating. Burial will follow in the Evergreen Cemetery in Skidmore. Friends may call at the Galloway Funeral Home in Beeville from 9 a.m. until 3 p.m. on Tuesday, May 2.

Serving as pallbearers will be Steve Elliott, Gordon Wallek, Randall Arnold, Randy Richmond, Ronnie Bollom, Ricky Scherler, Larry Wallek and Edwin Wallek Jr.

Honorary pallbearers are Ashley Breedlove, Justin Breedlove and Boscoe the dog.

Survivors include his wife, Virginia Breedlove of Wharton; son, Wilbur Fate Breedlove Jr. and wife, Sharon, of East Bernard; grandchildren, Ashley and Justin Breedlove of East Bernard; sisters, Wilma Lea Fox and husband, Carroll, of Houston, and Edwina Smith and husband, Jimmie, of San Angelo; brothers, Norvell Breedlove and wife, Betty, of College Station, Guy Breedlove and wife, Eileen, of Quitman and Van Breedlove of Silverton.

Margaret Curlee

Margaret Ann Curlee, age 73, of Wharton, died Wednesday, April 26, 2006, in Wharton. She was born on Sept. 18, 1932, in Bryan, daughter of the late John Cicherski and Stella Bomnskie Cicherski.
Mrs. Curlee was a homemaker and a resident of Wharton for more than 50 years. She married Maurice Gary Curlee on Oct. 28, 1961 in Stafford. He preceded her in death on May 6, 2003.

She was a former Avon representative for 20 years and was a President’s Club recipient. Mrs. Curlee was a former Wharton High School Band Booster member and officer, and Wharton Girls Softball volunteer for many years. She was a member of St. John’s Catholic Church in Hungerford.

Funeral mass services will be held at 10 a.m. Saturday, April 29, 2006, at St. John’s Catholic Church with Rev. Henry Rachunek officiating. Interment follows in St. John’s Cemetery. Rosary services were held Friday evening at Wharton Funeral Home.

She is survived by her daughters, Sharon Jedlicka and husband, Patrick, of Wharton, Catherine Willett of Pflugerville, and Marlise Curlee-Young and husband, Bradley, of Wharton; sisters, Helen Valigura of El Campo, Elizabeth Watson of Wharton and Evelyn Kocurek of Alvin; grandchildren, Christopher Curlee-Hintz, Colin Curlee, Chloe Curlee-Young, Cole Curlee-Young, Larry Otradovsky Jr., Chad Otradovsky and Amy Otradovsky.

She was preceded in death by sisters, Dorothy Duncan and Natalie Nelson; brothers, Fred, Kie and John Cicherski and by her son-in-law, Jerome Willett.

Pallbearers were Larry Otradovsky Jr., Chad Otradovsky, Christopher Curlee-Hintz, Colin Curlee, Dustin Popp and Wayne Hacker.

Gary Curlee

Maurice Gary Curlee, age 81, of Wharton, died Tuesday, May 6, 2003, in a San Antonio hospital following an extended illness. He was born on Jan. 4, 1922, in Searcy, Ark., the son of the late Albert Joseph Curlee and Martha Tamer Snyder Curlee.

Mr. Curlee had been a resident of Wharton since 1948. He was the former owner of the Colorado Valley Milling Company from 1952 until 1965. He was the current owner of Rice and Grain Equipment Company. Mr. Curlee was a veteran of World War II having served in the U.S. Coast Guard and was a member of American Legion Post 87 in Wharton. He married Margaret Cicherski on Oct. 28, 1961, in Stafford. Mr. Curlee was a former member of the Wharton Lions Club and the Wharton Rotary Club and worked with young people in the Wharton County Youth Fair for many years. He was a member of St. John’s Catholic Church in Hungerford. Four sisters, two brothers and a son-in-law, Jerome Willett, preceded Mr. Curlee in death.

A rosary was recited at 7 p.m. Thursday at the Chapel of the Wharton Funeral Home and a funeral mass was held at 11 a.m. Friday, May 9, at St. John’s Catholic Church in Hungerford with Rev. Henry Rachunek officiating. Burial followed in St. John’s Church Cemetery in Hungerford.
Survivors include his wife, Margaret Curlee of Wharton; daughters and sons-in-law, Sharon and Patrick Jedlicka and Catherine Willett, all of Wharton, and Marlise Curlee-Young and husband, Bradley Young of Schertz; seven grandchildren, Christopher Curlee-Hintz, Colin Curlee, Chloe Curlee-Young, Cole Curlee-Young, Larry Otradovsky Jr., Chad Otradovsky and Amy Otradovsky; and four great-grandchildren, Caleb Popp, Cale Otradovsky, Landon Otradovsky and McKinzey Otradovsky.

Pallbearers were Larry Otradovsky Sr., Larry Otradovsky Jr., Chad Otradovsky, Patrick Jedlicka, Dustin Popp, Bradley Young, Christopher Curlee-Hintz and Colin Curlee.

If desiring, memorials may be sent to the Bell Tower Fund, c/o St. John’s Catholic Church, P.O. Box 121, Hungerford, Texas 77448.

Funeral services were under the direction of Wharton Funeral Home.

Funeral services for Sledann West, 81, of Kendleton, are pending at Pierce Boone Funeral Home.

Donald Guess

Donald Albert Guess, 71, of Odessa, formerly of Wharton, passed away on April 18, 2006 in a hospital in Odessa.

He preceded in death by his wife, Connie; parents; Lynn and Leona Guess; brother, Lindsey Guess.
Mr. Guess was born Aug. 18, 1934, in Wharton. He graduated from Wharton High School and Sam Houston State University. Mr. Guess taught math at Wharton High School. He served in the U.S. Army. Mr. Guess was a finance man, a salesman and was very active in the Ector County Sheriff’s Posse and held many different offices in that organization. He was an avid horseman and rodeo fan.

Survivors are two children, step-children, Jerry and Kirk Riley and families; sister-in-law, Joyce Guess; nieces and husbands, Donna and Toot Hendry, DeAnne and J.C. Cooper, Debbie Guess, Denise and Chris Bebee; and nephew and wife, Lynn and Bernice Guess; cousins, Heyne and Shirley Dromgoole, Jack and Elaine Dromgoole and Rita and Melvin Sunderman. He is also survived by dear friends Perry and Cathie Harden of Odessa.

Graveside service will be held at Wharton City Cemetery, May 1, 2006 at 11 a.m. under the direction of Wharton Funeral Home.

Eunice Valenta

Diann Valenta, age 48, of Needville, died Monday, April 24, 2006, in Wharton following a sudden illness. She was born on Dec. 1, 1957, in Fort Devins, Mass., daughter of Thomas James Sparkman Sr. and Wanda Lou Grisham Sparkman, and was baptized at Jones Creek Baptist Church.
Mrs. Valenta was a former longtime resident of Houston before moving to Needville in 1987. She married Robert Dale “R.D.” Valenta on Sept. 9, 1994 in Needville. Mrs. Valenta worked as a finance director for various car dealerships for over 20 years and had worked with Don Elliott Autoworld in Wharton for the last three years.

Funeral services were held at 10 a.m. today, Friday, April 28, 2006, at Wharton Funeral Home with Mickey Reynolds officiating. Interment followed in Evergreen Memorial Park Cemetery in Wharton.
She is survived by her husband, Robert Dale Valenta of Needville; daughters, Karen Arnt and husband, Jeff Nixon, of Needville, Sheila Kowalewski and husband, Jason, of Needville, Amberly Valenta of Seguin and Amber Houge and husband, Jonathan, of Sweetwater; son, Johnathan Bairrington of Needville, stationed in Germany with the U.S. Army; parents, James and Wanda Sparkman of Houston; sister, Darlynn Horn and husband, Jerry, of Goliad; brothers, T.J. Sparkman and wife, Dana of Boling and Scotty Jackson Sparkman of Houston; grandchildren, Garrett Richardson, Jason “Bubba” Kowalewski Jr., Thomas Kowalewski, Clint, Candace and Crystal Nixon, Tristan and Sandra Houge.
She was preceded in death by a daughter, Jaime Carol Bairrington.

Brenda Woods

Funeral services for Brenda Annette Woods, 52, of Wharton, will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday, at Mount Calvary Baptist Church with Rev. A.J. Jones officiating. Burial will follow in Sand Ridge Cemetery. Visitation will be from 6 to 9 p.m. today, Friday. Friends may call after 1 p.m. today.
Ms. Woods died April 24, 2006, at Memorial Hermann Hospital Southwest. She was born Oct. 1, 1953, in Wharton to Jimmy Bluntson Sr. and Lillie Pearl Woods.

Survivors include son, Caladrive Hayes of Wharton; daughters, Tamyrah Parker of Indiana, Erica Smith and Teketria Hayes, both of Wharton; brothers, Deloyd Baines of Sugar Land, Jerry Bluntson of Bellville, Tommy Bluntson of Egypt and Jimmie Bluntson of Elm Grove; sisters, Jeanette Armstead of Richmond, Norma Wright of Atlanta, Ga., Peggy Johnson, Wanda Watkins and Sadie Bluntson, all of Elm Grove.

Helen Matula
Funeral services for Helen Valigura Matula, 73, of East Bernard, will be held at 2 p.m. today, Saturday, at Holy Cross Catholic Church in East Bernard with entombment following in Holy Cross Catholic Cemetery in East Bernard. Father Don Ruppert will officiate the services.
Mrs. Matula died Aug. 14, 2002, at her residence. She was born June 3, 1929, in East Bernard to Paul P. Valigura and Marie Hajdusek Valigura.
She was a member of Holy Cross Catholic Church, Catholic Daughters, K.J.Z.T. and Christian Mothers.
Mrs. Matula is preceded in death by her husband, Ernest F. Matula; parents, Paul and Marie Valigura; and sister, Mary David.
Survivors include brother and sister-in-law, Joe and Alma Valigura of Anahuac; brothers-in-law, Sylvester Matula and wife, Marian of Brazoria and Felix Matula of West Texas; sisters-in-law, Henrietta Forrest of Houston, Vicky Holley and husband, Dwayne, of Pearland and Molly Matula Wallace of East Bernard; numerous nieces, nephews, grand-nieces, grand-nephews, great-grandnieces and great-grandnephews.

Barney Morris
Funeral services for Barney W. Morris, 89, of East Bernard will be held at 2 p.m. Monday, Aug. 19, 2002, at Holy Cross Catholic Church in East Bernard. Interment will follow at Holy Cross Catholic Cemetery in East Bernard. Visitation will be from 5-9 p.m. Sunday, Aug. 18, 2002, at Holy Cross Catholic Church in East Bernard, with a rosary to be held at 7 p.m.
Mr. Morris was born on Oct. 25, 1912, in East Bernard, and passed away on Aug. 15, 2002, in Conroe. He is preceded in death by his wife, Antonia Morris; and grandson, Troy Janicek.
He is survived by sons and daughter-in-law, Richard and Patricia Morris of Conroe and Henry Morris of Beaumont; daughter and son-in-law, Bernadette and Gary Janicek of Wallis; grandchildren, Kevin Morris and wife Cheryl, Kelley Quail and husband Jeremiah, Kimberly Morris, Kyle Morris, Michelle McMillan and Brandi Janicek; and great-grandchildren, Lauren Morris, Logan Morris, Taeyler Northington and Cori McMillan.

Bessie Risinger
Mrs. Bessie West Risinger, age 94, passed from this life into eternal rest and peace in the loving arms of her Lord and Savior Jesus Christ on Aug. 13, 2002. Bessie and her late husband, T.J. Risinger, moved to Wharton from Orange in 1947 where she resided until 1999 when she moved to Clarewood House in Houston. She married T.J. Risinger on Oct. 20, 1934, in Woodville and he preceded her in death on Jan. 26, 1977.
A lifelong educator, Mrs. Risinger’s teaching career spanned 48 years, the last 20 of which were with Wharton Independent School District where she taught English and Latin. She received her undergraduate degree and teaching credentials from Stephen F. Austin University and a master’s of education degree from the University of Houston.
Among her many professional and civic activities were charter memberships in the Wharton County Retired Teachers Association, Community Concert and the Texas Association of Hospital Auxiliaries. She was also an active member of the First United Methodist Church of Wharton.
Mrs. Risinger and her twin sister, the late Hessie McElroy MacCanon, also of Wharton, were children numbers 11 and 12 born to Sam and Mary West near Lufkin. She is survived by son, Thomas Jackson Risinger Jr. and wife, Dianne of Crockett; daughter, Mary Ella Anderson and husband, Guy of Houston; granddaughters, Tracy Smith and husband, Bruce of Easton, Kan., Whitney Swanner and husband, Keith of Wiley, and Mary Grace Anderson of Houston. She also leaves numerous relatives in the West and Risinger families. All who knew Mrs. Risinger were blessed by their association with her and rejoice at her heavenly homecoming.
Services in her honor were held at 11 a.m. Friday, Aug. 16, 2002, at the First United Methodist Church in Wharton with Reverend Richard Burnham, Reverend Paul Thomasson and Clarewood House Chaplain Rick Walters officiating. Interment followed in the Wharton City Cemetery.
Pallbearers were Doc Blakely, Dr. Dwight King, Marion Hunt, Keith Swanner, Bruce Smith and Robert McElroy.
Honorary pallbearers were L.D. Gassett, Dr. David Samuelson, John Roades, Ludwig Matula Jr., Dr. Lowell Miller and Roger Spring.
In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to the First United Methodist Church, 1717 Pioneer, Wharton, Texas 77488; or Clarewood House, 7400 Clarewood, Houston, Texas 77036.

William Raitt

William Charles Raitt Sr., age 59, of Wharton died Wednesday, March 16, 2005, in a Wharton hospital following an extended illness. He was born on Oct. 12, 1945, in Baltimore, Md., the son of the late Herman Jacob Raitt and Anna Minnie Bodine Raitt.

Mr. Raitt had been a resident of Wharton for the past nine years and was a former resident of Houston and Baltimore, Md. He worked as an iron worker in construction until his retirement in 1990. He married Adelina Rivera on Feb. 5, 1988, in Wharton. He was a member of Our Lady of Mount Carmel Catholic Church in Wharton and enjoyed fishing, water skiing and boating.

A rosary will be recited at 7 p.m. today, Friday, at the chapel of Wharton Funeral Home and a funeral mass will be held at 10 a.m. Saturday, March 19, 2005, at Our Lady of Mount Carmel Catholic Church in Wharton with Rev. Raymond Jackson officiating. Burial will follow in the Evergreen Memorial Park Cemetery in Wharton.

Survivors include his wife, Adelina Raitt of Wharton; daughter, Tina Raitt; sons, Scott Lewis Raitt and William Charles Raitt Jr.; sister, Gladys Perry; and brothers, Herman Raitt and Theodore Raitt, all of Baltimore, Md. Four Grandchildren and one great-grandchild also survive along with numerous nieces and nephews.

Pallbearers will be Herman Raitt, Theodore Raitt, Allan Kollman, Jason Munos, John Rivera Sr. and Robert Rivera.

In lieu of usual remembrances the family requests memorials to Our Lady of Mount Carmel Catholic Church Building Fund, 506 S. East Avenue, Wharton, TX 77488.

Funeral services are under the direction of Wharton Funeral Home.

Clarence Golden

Clarence Otis Golden, 46, of Huntsville, Ala., and formerly of Iago, died Jan. 12, 2006, in Huntsville after a brief battle with acute myelogenous leukemia. He dedicated is body for medical research.

Mr. Golden was born Oct. 13, 1959, to Margaret Gary Ezell and Thomas Ezell.
He attended Boling High School for a couple of years and later returned to Alabama.

Mr. Golden was preceded in death by his grandparents, Clarence B. and Vernie Golden; and father, Thomas Ezell.
Survivors include mother, Margaret Cosetti of San Francisco, Calif.; brother, Thomas Golden of Huntsville, Ala.; sister, Giovanni Hutchinson and husband Sean of San Francisco; daughter, Latisha Golden Marek and husband, Toby, of Van Vleck; a granddaughter, uncle, niece, nephew and many cousins.

Lottie Kocian

Lottie Lee Bucek Kocian, age 84, of Bay City and a former resident of Hungerford, died Tuesday, Jan. 24, 2006, in a Bay City nursing home following an extended illness. She was born on Feb. 8, 1921, in Hungerford, the daughter of the late William Bucek and Liddie Wasek Bucek.

Mrs. Kocian was a longtime resident of Hungerford until moving to Bay City in 1979 to live with her sister, Georgie. She married William A. “Willie” Kocian on April 4, 1946, in Wharton and he preceded her in death on July 17, 1975. She was also preceded in death by two brothers, Wilton J. Bucek and Leonard J. Bucek. Mrs. Kocian was Protestant by faith. She was a homemaker all of her life and a member of the S.P.J.S.T. Lodge No. 148 in El Maton. She enjoyed hunting and fishing with her husband and she had a deep appreciation for her pets.

Funeral services were held at 2 p.m. Friday, Jan. 27, 2006, at the chapel of Wharton Funeral Home with Paul Jones officiating. Burial followed in Wharton City Cemetery.

Survivors include two sisters; Georgie B. Dornak of El Campo and Evelyn Smith of Houston. Numerous nieces and nephews also survive.

Pallbearers were her nephews, J.W. Bucek, Ken Bucek, Dennis Dornak, Dr. Douglas Dornak, Craig Fendley and Laddis Kocian.

If desiring the family request memorials may be made to a charity of personal choice.

Funeral services are under the direction of Wharton Funeral Home.
